The book was in excellent condition and has been used extensively by my
daughter who was recently diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. It is an inflamma-
tory disease driven by the immune system and diet is very important to
counter and manage inflammation. So, thanks, for getting the book to us
in a very timely manner. It will be well used. Mary Moore

Very interesting take on diet and metabolism that I have not seen anywhere else. I recommend the book for that reason. Even so, it has a couple of shortcomings. Firstly, Chilton is a researcher and he mentions conducting six research studies on AA. But he gives no details (although one paper is attached as an appendix) - no high-level overview of how the pieces came together, how the studies proceeded, how many participants, nature of the results in each study. Secondly as other people have noted, his plan of action is rather vague. He is absolutely clear about two foods to avoid - farmed salmon and eggs. He then gives a table of every food that has been measured by the USDA for its AA content and lists them in order, but it's less useful than you might think, with weird listings like chitterlings and pork skins. And the main text is also vague - at one point (p.95) he mentions beef and lamb as being low in AA. But his food pyramid shows beef and pork, no lamb. No mention of whether industrially farmed meat/eggs are worse than naturally raised. Worth it for the info about AA though, speculative as it is at the moment.

What the authors say about inflammation and arachidonic acid is true and significant, but the lask of mention of other causes of inflammation is hard to forgive. Not a word is said about toxins, homocysteine, infections, oxidants, or inflammatory vegetable oils. among many causes of inflammation. YOu might try THE INFLAMMATION SYNDROME, or HONEST NUTRITION.

It works if you follow it...

The program in the book works. I noticed a marked improvement in my fatigue, inflammation, and joint pain after only being on it for a few days. Like the old saw goes, "Don't knock it if you haven't tried it."

Funny thing... all the bad reviews I've seen of this book are from people who aren't sick and haven't actually tried the program. I've had health issues for years, and have tried lots of approaches to diet, lifestyle changes, and nutrition to help me feel better. The only thing that ever worked was a strict vegetarian diet and juice fasting.

Now, I know why the vegan diet and juice fasting worked, and I can follow a much more reasonable nutritional program (the one outlined in the book) and still enjoy the benefits thereof.

Bottom line: if you are suffering from fatigue, joint and muscle pains due to RA, lupus, FMS, CFIDS, etc., then it may be worth it to give this book a read and follow the program.

He's right about inflammation, you know.

I just finished this book. It was a light and interesting read. I gave it five stars because I believe that despite how the material was delivered -- it is an extremely important subject that is, overall, quite esoteric. Thus, for his field one can't criticize too harshly.

The book itself I felt like it could, as other reviewers have said, had a little more emphasis on an actual plan. Instead of giving a plan he demonstrated it with *ideas* for meals. I really wanted some more specific nutritional content instead of an overall "index." But hey, maybe I'm just a little bit of a science geek at heart. (Give me real numbers, not made up units!) Though, clearly, this book was intended for the common man -- for the nation -- not for a scientist at heart.

One thing that surprised me is how little supplementation of omega 3 EPA he recommended. Perhaps this was because he expected us to be getting it from the better meals we would be eating? Some studies on depression/bipolar, among other things recommend supplementing as much as 2 GRAMS of EPA per day, many of which have impressive outcomes! (Can this amount be achieved simply by eating "right?" Perhaps this high ammount is therapeautic)

But the important things that were introduced to me in this book that despite all of my reading of scientific studies, and prowling around on the net for information on inflammatory disease, I had never run across comes from the insightful review of the effects of arachidonic acid -- an insidious omega 6 fatty acid in our diet responsible for much of our immune problems as a nation, and the effects of an important supplement I'd entirely neglected to ever look into: borage oil.

Over all, this book had great information in it that even an otherwise well-informed guy like me could use! For all of it's shortcomings it offers something that's great, and I think, could stop a LOT of misery in this world! If I have any criticism, it is that it felt geared a little too much towards the average joe! But this isn't a bad thing... it just serves a bigger purpose and that is helping the common man, instead of being simply of academic appeal.

Highly recommended.

Powerful Ideas for Getting Healthy!

Syndrome X is High Cholesterol, Obesity, High Triglycerides, High Blood Pressure and the centerpiece: Insulin Resistance. The book provides the reasons for many people's poor heath and practical solutions to improve it greatly. It is also applicable to those who are already healthy and want to stay that way.

The authors clearly explain that Glucose is our biological gasoline and insulin is escorts the glucose from the blood into cells where it is burned as energy. As with the carburetor of a car, when this isn't working right, we are not going to be at our best!

Knowing what to eat is crucial in good health today. With our fast paced, fast food society this is no easy task. Syndrome X addresses the wide array of good foods, vitamins and nutrients to return to good health. It explains in layman's terms but never talks down to the reader about the benefits of eating right and the terrible effects of eating poorly.

Powerful topics include: The importance of diet, Glucose, the body's fuel and the secrets of living to age 100. Other subjects include, individualizing your Anti-X program, what to buy at supermarkets and more.

Vitamins C, D, E and more are explained in excellent detail. Minerals such as chromium, Zinc, Magnesium, are also addressed as well as nutrients such as antioxidants, good and bad fats and more.

The easy to understand explanations of how the body processes food and supplements is some of the best I have read. Overall Jack Challem, Dr Burton Berkson, and Melissa Diane Smith have done an exceptional job at providing a common sense guide to healthy living through good diet, vitamins and supplements!

Syndrome X was a breakthrough book when it first came out in 2000. Of course Syndrome X is a form of prediabetes, which increases the risk of full-blown diabetes and heart disease. Jack Challem (the lead author of Syndrome X) has outdone himself with his latest book along these lines: Stop Prediabetes Now, which came out in October. The description of the problem, his dietary recommendations, and his supplement recommendations are all much clearer and easier to follow. The recipes are superb -- I love the curry chicken salad, in particular. Jack addresses the bigger picture of prediabetes, of which Syndrome X is only one part.

the menu plan was too low carb and the supplement suggestions were worse!
it claims that folks 20 pounds overweight and over should take a supplement called L-Carnitine, Alpha Lipoic acid etc.
Well when I took the Carnitine, I swear the first time I took it, my heart was beating too fast and the second time, I felt a heaviness in my chest and I had dry mouth! When I did further research on these supplements, it had said that we really don't need the Lipoic acid and the Carnitine because it is already present in our systems!
So the authors owe me $$$ back for those supplements that got me sick! Heck they should give me $$$ back for buying this dumb book lol

I have only got about 1/2 of the book read but it is excellent. I have been diabetic for 25 years and I have learned alot so far. I always was one to take supplements but I found out there are more that would help me even more. As people know Diabetes and heart disease work hand in hand and I did have to have open heart surgery 3 years ago but I recouped very fast and the Doctor said he had never seen a diabetic heart in such good condition it was just the chloresterol in the arteries. My Doctor says I do not have syndrome X but he said is good that I am reading on it so if I ever do start experiencing any of the symptoms it will make me question it. I do believe the author was great in putting this down and explaining how important supplements are for the diabetic as two weeks after the heart surgery I underwent a brain tumor operation and I am glad my heart was in great enought shape to get me thru 2 major surgeries in 2 weeks time. Hence my review name of Miracle Mom. Great Book!

This should be required reading for all senior citizens on medicare/medicaid...all high school students...all college students and everyone else not on this list. As a nation, with the world close behind us, we are in deep trouble ALREADY and running faster down a slippery slope towards diabetes , type 1, 2 and will probably require a number 3 lable soon!!!

When a huge entity like the Federal Food & Drug Administration bows to the wishes of food product manufacturers, we are like sheep heading to the slaughter. You get a creepy feeling that some unknown, unseen persons are slowly killing you. Honestly? The Bible says that THE LOVE OF money is the root of all evil. And our grocery stores are a brightly colored, attractivly marketed example.

This book doesn't preach on the political aspect of our eating....that's me. But it teaches what your body is doing and will continue to do (and worse) if YOU don't take another path. Garbage in...garbage out.
Healthy eating...healthy body.

You've just been diagnosed with type II diabetes. You're scared, confused, etc. This is the book to buy to help you through it. It goes through all the technical, medical jargon and makes it understandable to you, then gives you clear cut ways to improve your situation. Is changing your lifestyle easy? Nope, but then again, nothing worth having/doing is easy. I can tell you, though, that if you follow the directions in this book, not only will you not be hungry, but you will feel healthier than you ever have in your life. At least I do...and so do many of my co-workers, friends, etc, who follow Atkins. You really have nothing to lose.

Atkins Diabetic Diet Does Work

My friend and I have been on this diet for about five weeks, and in that time I have lost 13 pounds and she has lost nine pounds. Be prepared to spend at least $400.00 the first month, then after the first month, it does not cost as much, as some things will be deleted from the menu, items that you may not care that much for and you can still stay in range of the amount of carb intake. The only problem we found is that the portion size for the meat is not mentioned, but we just used four ounces when meat was involved. We are on the 20 carb a day diet and at first you think that that is not enough, but after a few days, we found that we do not get hungry when we were not on this diet, and mostly the craving for food has disappeared. I would highly recommend this diet, and I am planning to follow it until I lose at least 40 pounds, then just eat sensibly from then on. I have already stopped taking Glucotrol, which one of the side effects is weight gain, and every week my sugars are dropping, and within the next four months I plan on not even being a diabetic any more, that is my goal.

I have found that the Atkins low carb diet is able to control my blood sugars and has allowed me to decrease my medications. I Think Dr. Atkins ideas are perfect for anyone with pre-diabetes or diabetes type 1 or type 2. Along with this, I also recommend Dr. Bernsteins books, The Diabetes Diet, and The Diabetes Solution. All are geared to us learning to monitor our sugars and eat accordingly. I have felt healthier, and my blood sugars are within a normal range since following the recommendations in the book. I highly recommend it, and wish the medical community would open their eyes to the results of following a low carb diet! After putting up with an awful cycle of being told to eat complex carbs, and watching my blood sugar increase from even oatmeal, and having my medications increased so I could eat the carbs the medical profession was telling me I needed, I finally found these books and learned. My blood sugars are almost normal now and my energy is great! Again, I cannot recommend these books enough to anyone who has pre-diabetes or diabetes.

I found this book to be well written and clear. As someone who is new to Ayurveda with a healing need, I have been looking for several books dealing with the same topics...in this case, how to modify one's diet to reach better balance physically, emotionally and spiritually. The content expanded and re-inforced principles I found in other Ayurvedic cookbooks. I felt I have gotten a better sense of how to use various types of foods and seasonings through this book. Highly recommended!

I was so impressed by Vasant Lad's "Complete Ayurvedic Home Remedies" book, I wanted to check out this book to incorporate Ayurvedic cooking. I was disappointed after I received and reviewed the book. This is a standard south Indian vegetarian cook book with an introduction to Ayurveda. So, if you are an Indian you might know most if not all of the recipes already. Even if you are not from India and want to learn ayurvedic style Indian vegetarian cooking, there are a dozen other cooking books which might be better than this. The recipes are not in detail, they are all very short. You have to go through some trial and error to perfect these recipes in my opinion.

Me and my 3 daughters have really suffered with systemic candida, as a result of intensive and long antibiotic therapy for treating Lyme Disease. My Candida was so bad it was in my lungs, as one doctor said well be grateful it is'nt in your brain!!! After combing websites for 8 weeks, Dr. Jeff's plan seemed to be the most thorough and comprehensive. I bought the book and the suypplements and followed the diet to the letter and did not stray once and the four of us have had complete success!!! We have been symptom and candida free since June. My youngest daughter, had some difficulty with returning yeast after the diet and I contacted Dr. Jeff and we backed her up on the plan and she stayed on for 3 more weeks and is doing well.

[...]. If you e-mail you through that forum he will respond with in 24 hours. I emailed throughout the entire diet and he always got right back to me.

God Bless

An Overview of Nutritional Medicine for Brain/Behavioral Illness
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-24
Some of the reviewers below apparently have not done much homework, but are willing to shoot from the hip. Who cares if the former Brain-Bio Center was only near Princeton and now has a new name? Life goes on and Ignorance is Bliss, but millions of Americans and many more worldwide are finding out that nutrients are medicine: fundamental, curative, and supportive/restorative in nature, far superior treatments to antagonistic prescription meds in most cases. It's case dependent.

I have been taking a megavitamin/mineral/fatty acid and very good nutritional regimen for 2 1/2 years. Basically, I'm a different person: much healthier, more energetic, confident, more productive, creative, enthused, and able to help others, and loving it~! This field of orthomolecular medicine and psychiatry is the preeminent methodology for effectively, naturally, and inexpensively improving body, brain, and behavioral health.

Overall, it is the safest and most cost-effective therapeutic regime by far. It needs to be taught, learned, applied, researched, and ramified throughout our failing health care system to revitalize it with life-giving elements that are in our food to begin with!

The results of orthomolecular doctors such as Hoffer, Cass, Holford, Gambee, Riordan, and dozens of others are in a different category than conventional medical providers. It is like trying to compare a natural orange and some strange orange-flavored candy (orthomolecular medicine vs. drug-based therapy).

Most doctors recognize the strategic limits and theoretical & practical problems with their trade--it is allopathic, relying on powerful unnatural agents to suppress, stimulate, or knock out disease, while other problems break out elsewhere from the effects of the same drug. Orthomolecular treatment is fundamental and curative in nature since it uses natural elements in our diets, our bodies, and natural environment which are ordinarily very easily and naturally processed by it. It uses innate and already functioning processes to build cellular metabolism, healthier tissues, enhanced organ function, a balanced endocrine system, and our neurotransmitter complex.

Compare that to destroying neuroreceptors to reduce someone's mental energy, while the brain tries to produce more neurotransmitters to compensate, and then we continue 'needing the drug' which destroys more neuroreceptors until significant brain damage may occur. Even the theory of the drug paradigm is riddled with obvious problems and faults, not to mention the side-effects of unhealthy thinking, constricted science, and and degenerative physical theories and their agents.

On the other side, nutritional medicine and psychiatry allow our body and brain to build themselves back normally and naturally by providing the building blocks for good intracellular health and fighting disease. In 10 or 15 years, as more and more people find out about NUTRITIONAL MEDICINE AND PSYCHIATRY, OUR ENTIRE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM COULD BE TRANSFORMED INTO A FUNDAMENTALLY HEALTHIER AND CURATIVE MODEL.

I would encourage you to read this book and some of the many other phenomenal books on this subject (1), Naturopathic Nutrition by A. Hoffer, M.D.; (2), Nutrients Quiet the Unquiet Brain, A Four-Generational Bipolar Odyssey, by D. Moyer; (3) What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You, by Ray Strand, M.D.; (4) Natural Healing for Schizophrenia and Other Common Mental Disorders, by Eva Edelman (an extremely well-written, insightful, and ground-breaking resource--look for her similar and much larger book on Natural Healing for Bipolar Disorder, due out sometime this Fall), (5) Optimum Nutrition for the Mind, by P. Holford; (6)Brain Allergies: the Psychonutrient and Magnetic Connections by William Philpott, M.D., or (6) The Natural Medicine Guide to...(A Series of Guide Books) by Stephanie Marohn, inc. The Natural Medicine Guide to Anxiety; Depression; etc. (5 books in her series on the various major 'mental disorders')--I could go on and on about the very good, scientifically-sound, and high level knowledge in these and other books that will advance your natural understanding of bio-behavioral illnesses by light years (exaggeration? I think not.) they also help you by showing some good ways to deal with these conditions nutritionally.

This (have I said it before?) is the preeminent, clinically proven, and most potent field in health care, pure and simple. Doctors such as Abram Hoffer and others also use medications in their practices, but only as tools, not the entire tool bag. Does a plumber come to work only with a powersaw, some caustic acids, and a sledge? Any honest and intelligent doctor will tell you that their trade is being controlled substantially by the pharmaceutical companies and that medical school education, research, and application are all under the pall of these mega-profit driven entities.

That's not to discredit all drugs, but the field must be opened up to the light of day, new knowledge, and scientific scrutiny not wedded with Big Pharma's big deception, big influence, and big need for our money and approval.

If you have time, read this book by Orthomolecular Pioneer Carl Pfeiffer, a good basic work in the field. Have a Nice Year!

Free Your Mind and Feed Your Brain! Healthy Inputs, Healthy Outputs (the underlying principle that the more commonly quoted "Garbage In, Garbage Out" is twisted out of). Interesting how hogs and other farm animals get more advanced, better-balanced nutrition that most of us.

Dr. Carl Pfeiffer is deceased (probably why the clinic is no more) but his research lives on. I believe a colleague took over and started a new center with a different name. Dr. Pfeiffer called the condition pyroluria, however, I believe his successors call it zinc and magnesium deficiency. A neighbor sought treatment for her daughter from the Pfeiffer Treatment Center, (when it existed) which at that time also offered temporary satellite facilities so people didn't need to travel to NJ. Her daughter improved so drastically it was amazing. Diagnosed with mental illness, as long as she stayed on the supplements, she was functional. Pfeiffer took hair samples from all the serial killers on death row and found one unifying trait - these vitamin deficiencies. I first saw Dr. Pfeiffer on the Phil Donohoe years ago. I wrote down his name and the term for the condition and then in college did a research paper on the Biochemistry of Crime, using Dr Pfeiffer's research as part of my assertion. All I can say, is don't knock it unless you've tried it. I have seen living proof that his research premise is sound.

After all, we already know that the food we eat does not actually provide the nutrients that the FDA claims they do since 40 years ago an orange offered more vitamin C than it has in it today. The beef today is more marbled with fat than 40 years ago since cattle used to be free range and so had more muscle and less fat in their tissue. And how does every living mammal (including humans) deal with toxins? They are stored in the fat cells. So if you eat beef marbled with more fat than 40 years ago, you are consuming more toxins (from the cattle) too. With digestive problems fast becoming an explosive problem in the U.S., is it any wonder that whatever is consumed may not be absorbed even if it provided the nutrients it was supposed to?

Carl Pfeiffer's work was done quite a few decades ago as he passed away. Following up on his work and furthering his work is Abraham Hoffer and Patrick Holford. This foundational work on orthomolecular was first coined by 2 time Nobel Prize winner Linnus Pauling. Pfeiffer's work was foundational to the advance of orthomolecular treatment for mental illness and schiophrenia. International Foundation of Schiophrenia furthers his work. I would definitely recommend Carl Pfeiffers work with Hoffers and Holford's. The Pfeiffer Treatment Center in Chicago also furthers his work. His clinic in NJ closed down some years ago. But his partner continues in Chicago.

This book seems to be full of formulae for curing mental illnesses. After I finished reading it, I tried to look up "pyroluria" in the Merck Manual and several reputable nutrition books...it wasn't listed. Then I checked the internet and found plenty of listings, but only circular information, as though the writers relied on this book rather than doing original research. Another case of "let the buyer beware"! If you must read this book, try to find it in the library, I wish I had!

The book was interesting, made a lot of sense. The person doing the program with me had great results and I just felt awful the whole time. So it's good, just not for everyone......

Very impressed with this detox diet. Easy to do. More than just a detox, it is also a great nutritional and diet guide. Much more reasonable and realistic as a detox, cleansing plan than most.

After drinking soy milk for 8 years, I found out that I was severely allergic to soy. At 27 years old, I had no energy, could barely walk four short city blocks without feeling dizzy and fatigued, was depressed and lethargic, and became a social recluse. After, of course, eliminating soy from my diet and taking vitamin supplements, I felt slightly better. But this detox program was the only thing that gave me a boost in energy, vitality, and my life back. I did the 2-day fast and hydrotherapy and followed the food and supplement guidelines. I highly recommend this thorough yet concise detox program to anyone and everyone. You will feel so much better in every way for doing it. To health, happiness, and vitality!

It worked for me.

I wasn't really feeling a need for a full detox, my concern was my cholesterol. My doctor was referring me to a stroke and heart attack prevention clinic. I knew I had to do something and taking prescription medication (poison) was not a desirable "solution".

I had previously heard of this book from a hiking friend who recommended it whole heartedly, so I figured it was worth a try. I did not do the fasting nor the hydro therepy (I think the Geneva conventions and ASPCA would frown on the latter).

I did faithfully follow the diet plan. This included eating 100% vegan and consuming no coffee, black tea, chocolate or alchohol for 12 days. Since then I have included fish and lesser amounts of coffee and alchohol than I consumed in the past.

The good news is my Dr. called today with my cholesterol results and CANCELLED my appointment with the stroke and heart attack clinic because the results were so profoundly improved!

The book has sample meal plans and easy to follow recipes. The meals taste good and you don't go hungry (unless you do the two day fast). An added benefit was getting my weight down about 7 lbs (5%) and reducing my bmi a couple percent.

This book is just what I was looking for- a guide to managing my Lupus-like disease naturally. I only started the diet 2 days ago, so I cannot yet vouch for its efficacy, but a vegan diet is mentioned in numerous places elsewhere in terms of its benefit to those with autoimmunity. Ms. Harrington lays out a plan and justification, offering information as well as support. It can be overwhelming and confusing to look at all the health information out there on managing these illnesses, but this plan is where I choose to start.

Outstanding very helpful book!

Jill's book was outstanding and very helpful. I bought 4 copies to give to other relatives who are caretaking and preparing food for my 4th grader who has a Lupus diagnosis. It was such an easy-read that he read and understood Jill's book as well and is now active in his own caretaking! I highly recommend this book to everyone who has or knows of someone with a Lupus diagnosis. It's a godsend.

When I got the book I was rather skeptical and simply put it away after my initial reading. I took my meds and did everything I could to better how I felt with lupus. After resisting over 1 1/2 years, I finally tried some of Jill Harrington's suggestions. The results have been great and I am now much more comfortable and mobile. I have been able to garden daily for the first time in over four years. The author's attitude is very supportive and she makes it easy.

Be cautious about how you approach healing your Lupus.

I bought this book perhaps three years ago when I was first diagnosed with Lupus. I read it extensively. I have had Lupus for more than a decade now, although I was only diagnosed just before I purchased this book. I am 45 years old, and I can honestly say that good nutrition is pivotal for any healthy body, but that Jill's proposed diet should be viewed with caution. There are indeed some lovely ideas about using whole foods, but here I was, a vegetarian for most of my life, eating a whole foods based diet, as slim as can be, and still searching for ways to amend my already sound eating habits to hopefully embrace remission. I too have Celiac disease and many people with Lupus have other comorbidities. My advice is not to look at this book as the only way to heal. Far more helpful to me (and I was a practicing pharmacist for many years) was to discover a wonderful naturopath. With no Lupus medications, my approach to healing is all about stress control, rest, diet, exercise and supplements. Most importantly, get an allergy screen. The night shades are not good for anyone with Lupus and this is not made clear in the book. After working with my naturopath, and after 30 years, I began to eat wild fish and use fish oil supplements. Last week, after 40 years, and following the Type O diet as elaborated by Dr. Dr D'Adamo, I began to eat grass fed meat. That was the most difficult thing to do and not something that Jill would ever advocate. I avoid the fruits and veggies that are toxic to my blood type and I honesly can say that for the first time in years, I am feeling so much better. My thoughts about Jill's work is that diet is important in helping people with Lupus feel better, but her diet is certainly not for everyone. In fact, eating raw produce even though organic, can be quite dangerous if you are immune-compromized. There are times when people with Lupus need to eat softer cooked foods so as not to stress the gut and avoid possible infections. I would strongly suggest eating according to your blood type, while avoiding allergens after allergy testing. Stay away from alfala and nightshades all together. I know Jill uses nightshades but they are pro-inflammatory. Gluten containing foods are also pro-inflammatory and should be avoided regardless of sensitivities. Certain gluten-free grains are wonderful like quinoa and buckwheat and I do not think Jill favors the use of grains. I think too often in life we grapple with the illusion that one plan fits all. Would it not be so lovely if that held true. I certainly think that Jill has devoted so much of her life's work to helping people with Lupus, but from my own journey, I have begun to understand immunology a whole lot more. Eating foods that do not awaken those auto-anti-bodies might just be another logical approach.

I had high expectations of this book. I expected it to be backed up by science, considering the blub and credentials of the author. I followed its recommendations for a while. Result? I got fatter and more slothful, rather than fit and more healthy. The author, for all her Ph.D.'s and R.D.'s seems utterly incapable of doing anything but regurgitating the ultra high carbohydrate party line.

Her dietary recommendations might work for a heavily muscled teenager who does a lot of aerobic exercise. I wouldn't say it would do such people any good, but it might not hurt them too much. For anyone else: anyone interested in changing their body composition for the better, this is actively harmful stuff. Her recommendations on protein intake for example are absurd. She recommends bodybuilders use 1.6 gram of protein per kilogram, despite quoting research which says that people who eat more protein than this gain more muscle! Presumably, this value is some kind of compromise from the USRDA of 0.8 g/kilogram. Why not just tell people to eat the right amount of protein? She does, to her credit, recognize that people need more protein when they're trying to cut fat, but even then, I have to wonder at her logic. Only 2g/kg? And you're supposed to eat high glycemic foods like toast while dieting? Are you insane?

There is some decent advice buried here. Don't drink booze. Drink water. Take vitamins. Eat carbs after you work out. Soft drinks are dumb. But really, there's so much basic nonsense here, the book has no practical value. Other obvious pieces of advice: use whey protein, take fish oil, eat a LOT of protein; the entire concept of glycemic index, food allergies: missing in action.

I have been looking at all sorts of eating books, and this one really worked.
In "Body for Life" book, he won't let you eat enough carbs, imagine living without eating bread. Plus, if you eat an apple, thats a serving of carb, which means you can either eat a piece of bread or an apple, not both. We all know both bread and apple are healthy, but he won't let you eat that. plus, he had no considerations for vegetarians like me. So, I was looking for something that will help me eat fruits and vegetables and cut fat, and was very skeptical about buying this, and then I thought, "what the hell!"
A great thing about the plans given in this book are they really work. It will take a little while to grab a calculator and figure out your calorie needs and breakdown, but its worthwhile. You will also be surprised what constitutes a portion, for eg 1/2 cup pasta is 1 serving. I thought it was much more. Knowing the size of portions and sticking to them is the key point. I bought a measurement cup and almost bought a weighing scale, these would be very valuable. You will need to constantly modify calories as you lose weight. But wait! its not about just losing weight, it has 3 distinct plans for both men and women for (a) cutting fat (b) maintaining muscle and (c) building muscle. Now I know while I was training at the gym, I wasn't eating right. If I follow her plans, I would certainly pack on muscle.
Another thing is that you can customise this plan as per your needs. I am a total vegetarian, no eggs, meat, fish, meat etc. So, I had to see the calories on a meat packet and go round the supermarket to find a vegetarian packet with similar calorie profile. For eg: I could substitute 1 slice of cheese for a slice of sandwhich meat. You will have to do a little research, and you'll be fine. you can also try authors "the be healthier feel stronger vegetarian cookbook", in which author gives tons of vege recipes to keep you going. [...]
finally, the moment of truth: did i cut fat? yes!!! I came down from 84 kg (33% BF) to 62.5 kg (13% BF) in about 9 months. But I stuck to the plan! Don't expect to eat whatever you want and still expect this to work. I did 3-4 times of morning cardio for 45 mins. 3 months later, I will switch to "building muscle" plan to gain muscle.
So, get this book, if you are a vegetarian, this is probably your only choice, it works.
