This book has alot of good information to do with elimination diets/antibiotic use and the development of candida albicans problems that cause food allergies. It is an excellent book to read and follow if you suffer from allergies or asthma.

This book has saved my life! Since moving to Austin, Texas (allergy capital of the world)from Chicago not only have my allergies and asthma gotten extremely bad, but I've also been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, chronic sinus infections, panic disorder, agoraphobia and chronic fatigue. I have gone off of my antihistamines, Flonase, antidepressants, birth control pills and lowered my Flovent dosage by 75%! Tapering off that while I start Intal again. I can't tell you how this has saved my life! You do the program to the tee - you'll feel better in days. Within one week I felt like a million bucks! It's not easy, but to feel this good is really worth it! To top it off, I lost 8 pounds in two weeks (now 126)! Please get this book for people that are suffering. A lot of people are getting this for Christmas this year!

The book is based on changing your eating habits to improve asthma. It has alot of good information on allergies, food intolerance, and asthma, as well as allergy tests. It also talks about asthma medications and their side effects, and has a chapter on nutritional supplements. The author used to work for Atkins and is his philosophies are less extreme than Atkins but he does incorperate alot of meat into his program. His basic program is to identify food sensitivities, and avoid foods that you are sensitive to, as well as things that contribute to candidiasis and leaky gut. If you aren't ready to make big changes in your diet you may be wasting your money. The diet cuts out sugar and fruit for a limited time, and he advises you to leave the sugar out. One of the issues in this book is it is really based around identifying your food intolerances. He recommends tests which will run you $400 and up. These are not often covered by insurance. I did take the test and found out my intolerances. He also states you can do an elimination diet if you can't afford the tests but it sounds very confusing and hard to implement. While he recommends most meats, much research shows that antiinflammatory diets work best with asthma, as well as vegan diets, which would contridict this method. I'm not a vegetarian but I have tried to keep my meat consumption down based on my own research and I have tried to stay on an antiinflammatory diet that is more plant based. Also, his recommendation for fish oil, while great, is contridicted in alot of lietrature as it can make symptoms worse for some asthmatics. So do your own research on fish oil and see if it gives you any problems if you do implement this part of his program.
I think his book is good in the sense that it focuses on positive diet changes and would be beneficial to someone who is eating alot of junk food and it may well help their asthma. It also is a decent reference book for allergy tests, medications, and supplements. If someone is on a healthy diet and takes good care of their health and is savy to nutrition it may not be a big help. Also not recommended for vegetarians, except that the tests may uncover food allergies if you are willing to pay for them. To some it may be worth a try, it does have some good information.

I previously purchased this book, used it successfully, and then lent it(much marked up) to someone (don't remember who)and now I need it again. I didn't follow the program 100%, but it did work. I was on allergy shots, and had asthma symptoms at certain times of the year depending on what was blooming. This book worked for me, and I have tried a lot of them.

Missing the point

Another book that I felt had very little to offer that was not already out there. For the past fifteen years, I coughed every morning and night with disrupted sleeping and resulting fatigue. It was a breathing method called Buteyko that changed this.

That is whre this book falls - it does not explore overbreathing which is a significant part of asthma. If you have allergies or asthma- look at Buteyko. Many books exist that offer self help. These are the only ones I feel will help asthma.

My point is unless a book addresses breathing volume, it will never solve asthma.

Do your own research.

Bobbie did a great job of putting together this guide. I have been on a low sodium diet for several years. I became quite knowledgable on low sodium products, in fact I operate a website called eatlowsodium.com listing various low sodium foods (all under 200mg of sodium per serving). Bobbie's guide is one of the most comprehensive sources I have even seen. So I highly recommend it.

I bought this book for my mom who recently was put on a low salt diet due to going on warfen. She has found it to be very helpful in planning her meals and was able to use it also for helping plan meals for my father who is diabetic. She can find not only salt amounts, but also fat, sugar, and other information. She calls it her food Bible.

This book is pretty simple to follow and fairly easy to use in general, but I have never heard of over 90% of the Brand Names for food items listed. I mean never. I do a ton of internet shopping and do my grocery shopping in multiple stores, and yet the vast majority of these "Name Brands" are totally foreign to me. Just for research, I tried looking for some of the brands on the internet, and couldn't find them. How is that going to help me shop for low-sodium foods in my local grocery stores? I don't feel I can use the Generic nutritional info, as there is really no way to know just how realistic those may be, as prepared food recipes can vary quite a bit from brand to brand and store to store.

I do find the listings for popular National chain restaurants and fast food places to be very informative, and have pretty much decided that I can never ever eat at any of those places ever ever again.

I guess I will just have to continue reading the nutritional labels of every single last grocery product I pick up in the supermarket, and resign to the fact that it's unhealthy to eat any entrée at any chain restaurant.

I haven't ever used this book as a detox program per se; I choose instead to use it as a reference book in daily life. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a true book of wisdom on purifying your life.

When I interviewed the author of this book for my podcast show recently, I was pleased to hear that he understands the critical importance of implementing a low-carb strategy for people who are dealing with obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and the like because it is the only way to "crack the code" to restore your body to maximum health. Far too often the medical community would rather choose to put someone with these conditions on a risky and oftentimes dangerous prescription pill rather than implementing a natural dietary routine to bring the condition under control. Thankfully, Dr. LaValle is NOT the kind of physician who thinks this way and instead uses specific supplements and low-carb foods to produce the necessary changes in health that patients are desperately seeking. There's no more fighting with your body to get it well when you unlock these keys to optimal health that Dr. LaValle shares.

Great Book For Understanding How Your Body Functions
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-02
I originally bought this book because of the title thinking that it would help with my metabolism and give me answers to how to speed it up. In that regard the title was misleading but as I later learned while reading this book that metabolism refers to much more than how fast your body burns calories. Anyone serious about making their body the #1 priority and giving it what it needs to function properly and increase health longevity should read this book. Excellent, excellent, excellent. I could never be in the medical field but I understood enough to learn about the interactions of the body system as it refers to your health. The supplement list is great (I would love to know if there is an updated version in case new products are available). Also the test guide to learn where your problem areas are is very useful.

All in all 5 star, I only wish there were more doctors like Dr. LaValle to assist people in there quest for optimal health.

I have a previous version of this book science 1992. Its been the foundation for my practice. I have dwelled into other schools of YOGA like ashtanga, but this practice is always from where I start every time I come from a break. The book also covers the basics of pranayama, meditation, nutrition and other things that go hand in hand with Hatha Yoga. The Sivananda School of though is concentrated on holding an asana and relaxing, controlling the breathing and meditating while holding it.

The proper way

Despite the ridiculous advice in the review "Approach traditional hatha yoga like Sivananda Yoga with extreme caution. In only a little time, you too can develop a degree of flexibility that can directly cause a loss of stability in your spine, in turn causing long lasting health issues. Strength and flexibility are not incompatible, but it is very easy and tempting to pursue yoga as your only fitness program, at the expense of strength, stability, muscular, and cardiovascular endurance. This is not a good health and fitness strategy for most folks. " -this book is just fabulous. If you're performing the asanas properly, as this book clearly details, then there is no risk of your back getting so flexible you will loose stability in your spine. In fact, if your doing the asanas in the proper fashion, in the order this book detail, then the strength of your spine will increase dramatically, not loose stability. That is simply ridiculous. It sounds like a weight trainer/strength trainer loosing clients to a yoga class. Yes, it's true there are plenty of weekend trained yoga instructors that don't know what they are doing, but this book is not one of them. It is simply the best methodical approach to Yoga I have yet read, and tells you why one posture follows another in a particular order, increasing strength and flexibility. Also, the "cardiovascular" benefit mentioned in the review, or supposed lack thereof, is simply not true if these asanas are performed with the proper breathing techniques and meditation. Whatever "study" the reviewer is supposedly sighting is clearly flawed. My own experience, verified by my doctor and several cardiologists, is to keep doing what I'm doing for such overall excellent cardiovascular health (which I have not always had). That would be Yoga, derived not from a class, but at home, from this fine volume. Read it thoroughly to understand the underlying principles, then do it, every day. You will not be disappointed.

I'm a yoga teacher and I love this book!I got this book for my Yoga Teacher Training as a book we had to have. This book goes over everything you need for a yoga lifestyle. It's really informative about alot of different points. It has lots of pictures for reference. The instructions on how to get into the poses are very easy. The only thing I don't like is how much emphasis they put on the headstand. First, in the sequence that they reccomend the headstand is one of the few first poses you should do. I was taught to do it towards the end of practice. Plus constantly doing the headstand is actually not good for you. It has it's benefits but you can over do the headstand pose. Overall it's a really great book and everyone who practices yoga should have this.

Brilliant for Beginners and the Experienced

Overall this book gives its user an excellent beginning into the world of yoga. It provides a step by step introduction into the breathing techniques and asanas that allows the total beginner to ease him or herself into the complex world of yoga. Once you have mastered all of the basics the book also goes on to more advanced techniques and variations as well as a comprehensive look at how to live a life in the tradition of the original yogis. Specifically dealt with are diet, meditation, and the meaning behind all of the asanas, breathing techniques, and the philosophy of it all. The pictures and drawings a very helpful, as they show the full body, instead of stick figures, in addition to step-by-step instruction on how to get into (and out of) the asanas. Overall great value for money for beginning and experienced yogis alike.

I have been interested in yoga since my teen years, I do the asanas, but wanted more. This book is part of my "more".
I am going slowly with this book and instructions are not always easy or to me, at least, complete. I lead a contmeplative lifestyle and realize that body, mind and spirit are all connected. I am not interested in public displays of fashionable yoga clothing, hot new teachers, going to yoga spas. I choose to do with less, since I need less, my wants are losing appeal for me. I am vegan for the health of animals, and attempt to live a "do no harm" life, part of "do no harm" includes taking care of myself at a deeper level and respecting my body, mind and spirit.
If you want an exercise book, this is not it. If you want the begining of a lifestyle change, go with this path....promises to be quite the journey.

Health, finances, relationships, career, social, and more are looked at in this book.

The authors recommend 10 servings of protein a day; and that makes this a high protein diet: not overly high but high. Check with your MD to see how many servings are safe for you if you are a woman as wrist fractures increase for women consuming over 8 ounces of protein a day, according to a major female nurse study--however, you may be able to consume more, safely, if you are obese. The foods recommended are proven to improve mood. The high protein helps promote satiety so you won't feel hungry. It's nice to have proven combinations of foods spelled out and placed into daily menus. Great little book!

This diet may be good for families with stay-at-home parents, but as a practical diet it completely fails for working professionals.

First the Good:
The diet is definitely healthy for you (after all, you are supposed to eat salmon 5 times a week), and I am not doubting that it will put you in a good mood.

The Ugly:
You have to undergo a video-game like quest every week to assemble all of the items: gather 3 ounces of herb #1, 5 ounces of herb #2, 5 fish with no mercury, etc.. This "good mood" diet puts me in a bad mood before it is even started because I am stressing to collect all of the items. Am I assembling a bomb or on a diet? Also, some of the items I just flat out have no idea where to get. I don't live in some yuppie land where flaxseed and mercury-free fish vendors are on every corner.

If you have the time (and the money) to follow this diet you are probably already in a good mood, for everyone else I cannot recommend this.

The Good Mood Diet really does help to balance your moods - it was as if eating the recommended foods simply erased my tendency toward irritability and anxiety. I was a little concerned when my weight did not go down right away, as that was also what I was looking for, but it just took a few weeks for my metabolism to speed up and then everything was good. The book is quite detailed. Very much to learn, but it WORKS! Also, there is a website with a chat group to get support and ask questions which is very helpful. Also, if it seems overwhelming at first, it'll get much easier to do without checking off a list in just a couple of weeks. Definitely recommend this book. May not be the fastest weight loss plan, but the healthiest physically and emotionally. Go buy it!

I found this book at the perfect time in my life, and I am forever thankful for it. For whatever reasons, I experience a physiological response to certain foods that make me crave more and more. This book helped me to see that if I avoid putting certain foods in my body, I won't experience those cravings that drive me into shame, compulsion, and eventually weight gain. It's not a temporary weight loss trick, it's a life long change to stop eating certain foods in order to keep my sanity. I had already been exposed to Overeaters Anonymous a couple years ago, which definately helped me see that I wasn't alone, that I do have an addiction, and that letting God into that area of my life is absolutely necessary in order to overcome it. This book helped me make changes to be free from the cravings.

In regards to the strict food plans the book presents, I don't take the portions too seriously, but I can see they could be helpful for someone who is just starting the recovery process. I think the general principals are more important for me - cutting out the foods that cause you problems, period. Why would you recommend that an alcoholic only drink a little bit? The point is, for whatever reason, they are unable to so they need to avoid ever putting it in their body.

I definately recommend this book to anyone who is ready to make a lifelong change.

I was really disappointed when I read this book. If you've read the 12 steps of compulsive overeating, then you've pretty much read this book. It tells you the same thing. It takes forever to get you to the place where you can create your own meal plan...and what a joke! There's no way I can stick to something like that. I would starve too death!

In conclusion, I do NOT recommend buying this book. It did not help me at all.

What a disappointment! The authors’ answer to binge-eating is simply eliminating all sugar, flour, fat, caffeine, or whatever your “trigger” foods are from your diet. Not only that, but they insist you must weigh and measure your food all the time for the rest of your life. That’s hardly what I consider freeing yourself from obsessing about food. They actually recommend keeping an emergency food kit in your car to be sure you always have measuring cups, a food scale, and several cans of “safe” food available to you at all times. Perhaps this is wise advice for people who are morbidly obese, but for those of us who are at a normal weight, or only slightly over, and are looking for some insight and realistic advice on dealing with compulsive/binge eating, this book is NOT the answer!

After I read the book and was very disappointed, I went on-line to write this review. I find myself agreeing completely with the reviews that gave this book a low rating. It is yet another attempt to espouse the virtues of the 12 step Overeaters Anonymous program. While I think there are good aspects of the 12 step program and that it may help some, there are many that the program simply wouldn't work for, including myself. Mainly, I think, because it mandates that you cut flour, sugar, and other foods completely from your diet. I feel that this sets a person up to fail because one ends up feeling deprived, which leads to binging. In fact there is a whole chapter in the book that talks about case studies and nearly every person mentioned has relapsed and is valiantly trying to get back to abstinence and lose the weight yet again. I would suggest that instead of working a program that obviously isn't working, they should perhaps seek another solution, maybe in the form of professional counseling. I would recommend "The Solution" by Laurel Mellin, which is a comprehensive support solution with groups and pyschologists around the country practicing the methods given in the book. I have found this method much more helpful than Overeaters Anonymous ever was. If OA is working for you, then I think that is great, but if you are like me and do not find that it fits you, I encourage you to look elsewhere. The Solution is a great place to start, and if you want to check out the website go to WWW.Sweetestfruit.com.

Bold, highly entertaining and thought-provoking. This book will change the way you think about heart disease forever. This description is on the front of the book and is absolutely spot-on. And it has probably saved lives.

For example, after taking statins for several years, my mother-in-law suddenly became very forgetful - repeating the same question four times in less than 15 minutes, forgetting that she had gone shopping or to the doctor that morning, etc. It was quite frightening for all of us.

The battle to persuade my parents-in-law that she needed to stop taking the statins went on for months until, with the help of this book and "Lipitor: Thief of Memory" by Duane Graveline, they agreed that she should stop - just for a few days, mind you - this so-called "medication" (it's clearly just a poison by another name). Within 10 days of coming off simvastatin (aka Zocor), she was noticeably better, but we're still not sure she will recover completely.

I believe these two books helped to save her life - and certainly the quality of her life.

Yawn Yawn

Another author jumping on the cholesterol band wagon. You know things are getting a bit much when you have two books with the same name.

Yes hardly eating any fat is bad for you. Yes lets write a book about it and earn a few bob. Yes lets include a rendition of terrible humour.

Aaaargh !! Please stop or do some peer reviewed research rather than preaching "pub chat" to the masses

Is it me or does every alternative half baked book on health receive rave reviews ? Is it all a corporation conspiracy

As an internist/epidemiologist I was thrilled by this well written book (as good as Gary Taube's, and much more fun to read). I hope to be around when the pillars collapse around the fifty year old specious theory of cholesterol's role in CVD.However, like the erroneous theories of gastric ulcer causation, Big Pharma and the medical establishment are unlikely to give up on this money-making enterprise soon. The theory is now orthodoxy, and like any threat to a religion, people like Kendrick will be considered heretics for years to come. Think of Helicobacter pylori.

A lucky find.....

Dr. Kendrick, with razor sharp British wit, provides an understandable, but fact and research supported explanation of the truly unforgivable self-interested leadership provided by our National health organizations, and the Pharmaceutical industry, as they promote a profit driven statin drug scam on our world populations. It becomes clear how our willingness to take the word of doctors as fact and in our best interest, does not serve us well.

Kendrick, using the gentleness of wit, delivers a healthy dose of reality on the fallibility of doctors. Hey, they are human! They are busy and fall victim of taking the word of other "experts" that they should be able to count on. It is apparent that those sources are influenced by forces not acting in our best interest!! Naively, they probably do think there is little harm in statins. Hey, remember Thalidomide?

You owe it to yourself to get the facts before exposing yourself to expensive, and, tragically, very unnecessary and potentially very very harmful medication sold to fix a "cholesterol problem" that in no way is the problem, based on the most elementary scientific method and unbiased interpretation of their own research results.

Dr. Kendrick has done us all a huge favor taking the risk, and putting in the effort to expose this fraud. This sham is on a scale that could truly land corporations in huge lawsuits, as with tobacco. But, as you will see, they are most cleaver and innocent in their methods......

Best of all, you will sleep better getting some real answers to this baffling barrage of media and MD rhetoric. Like, "what is cholesterol anyway?"

Lets be reasonable

So it turns out that Big pharma, and your doctor are conspiring to worsen your health so that they can make money.

Can I ask How???

If big pharma is fabricating research about cholesterol to convince doctors to prescribe statins to improve your health...how are they in conspiracy??

Do you really think that all the drugs are bad and you are better off with natural remedies...then let me ask you this ....do you think if any of these natural remedies was as wonderful as it is claimed to be, do you really think that a drug company would not snatch it and sell it to you as a pharma grade expensive product and make a fortune out of it.

Let me enlighten you:

if you read the book for entertainment ..I can see that

but if you read it for info and even worse if you believed it...then you are saying that all these legitimate people and organization such as the American heart association, American college of physicians are conspiring against you....as you would have concluded here from reading this book by somebody who claims he knows (why would you believe that he is trying to help you)

It is hard to come up with great medical discoveries but it is very easy to fabricate some cure it all sell on the internet miracle cure and get rich doing it

So who do you really think is after your money????conspiring against you????

This book is a great resource for a first time faster. I like the fact that it was published in 2007, so all the information given in this book should be pretty up to date. It tells you everything you need to know about the benefits of juice fasting, what to expect during the detoxing process, what fruits and vegetables are best for juice fasting and their health benefits, juice fasting safety and preparation, what to expect psychologically during fasting, and I absolutely love the juice recipes. What this book is lacking are clear step-by-step instructions to take you through the fasting preparation, the fasting itself, and the breaking of fasting. It's all a bit vague and leaves you slightly confused. For this reason, I suggest this book in combination with Dr. Paavo Airola's "Juice Fasting: The Age-old way to a New you!", a great book with step-by-step instructions, and you should have all the resources you need for a successful fast.

Here is the table of contents:

1. Benefits of a Juice Fast
2. Detoxing for Greater Health
3. Best Fruits and Vegetables for Juicing
4. Juice Fasting Safety and Preparation
5. Choose a Program for Your Fast
6. Handling Your Fast Well
7. Glorious Juice Recipes
8. Ending Your Fast Properly
9. Testimonials

Good book for reviewing reasons to fast including health benefits and side effects. Good recipes to follow, and if you are not going to juice, just eat the ingrediants in the recipes: carrots, apples, oranges, ginger, spinach. All great foods for your body. Good reference book.
