Good idea if you love to keep detailed records. My son had surgery and it was a great place to keep all the info but didn't use it much for routine care
Handy, especially for new moms!

We found this to be so handy at doctor's appointments and also at looking back to see how big our son has gotten from one month to two, and so on. It's a great way to keep track of his immunizations also.
This is AWESOME.

I purchased this healthtracks book/binder when my daughter was about 9 months old. I was so frustrated with trying to keep all my things in one folder, and it was already getting messy. There is a place to mark each tooth, when it comes in.... each illness... each prescription.... each physician visit, immunizations, and it goes all the way up to the teenage years. There is even a space to record menstrual cycles in girls! Holy COW! I wish I had this earlier, but I was happy to spend the time copying all my daughter's information into one place. It fits easily into the diaper bag for all my physician visits, and also has pockets inside to store shot records and other things that you may get from the physician office. It has areas for physician contact info, insurance information, etc. I feel like if anything ever happened to me, my husband or family would know what they needed to about my child's health. I am pregnant again and will be buying one for my second child as well. I hope they never discontinue this!

I gave this as a baby shower gift. It was a hit & she certainly didn't get two of them. New moms would be surprised how often you need to remember the stuff this book is designed to organize. My friend plans to by it for her sister who has a special needs child who has a lot of doctor appointments.

I bought this item for my daughter after her baby was born. With all of the stuff she needs to keep up with, organizing is a must. So, at least all of the items can be filed together for reference later when needed. It is easier to start out with an organizer than try to catch up later-so do it now.

This book is amazing, not only suggests what to eat, but also tells one how much to eat, and the reasons why he recommends it, taking into account that everybody is different all at the same time.
Again great source of information.

I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone interested in knowing how the body works. As someone who is interested simply in cutting my body fat level and staying in shape, rather than body building, I found it to be extremely valuable. I lost several pounds in a week or so after reading the book simply by following some of the general ideas alone.
Worst nutrition book I have ever read.

This book is the worst book on nutrition that I have ever read. Imagine recommending 3 large meals accompanied by beer or wine as an appropriate nutritional regieme for a modern athlete. The only value this book has as is an historical document which demonstrates how ignorant we were about nutrition not all that long ago. If you follow the advice in this book you had better be on steroids if you think you are going to get big. Absolute rubbish.

My wife and I used this diet years ago and lost weight. We needed to loose a few pounds again (Holiday gains) so, after trying several other diets that didn't seem to work, we decided to do this diet again. It works! I lost eleven pounds in two weeks and my wife has lost weight also. The book is easy to follow with menus for each meal, every day. I found the meals to be very healthy and most are very tasty. If you follow the plan it will work but I suggest using some Hoodia to curb the appetite.

I love this diet! No! I adore this diet!
It helps me kickstart my healthy eating.
It helps me break my food addiction.
It helps me with all my ridiculous cravings.
It helps me with all my aches and pains due to unrevealed food allergies.
It's the easiest diet I've been on (after the first 2 days). It gives you choice, freedom to eat as much spinach and as many cucumbers as you want... freedom to stop after 3 weeks... freedom to choose.
This is such an American diet.
3 weeks on... as much time as you want off and then when you feel overwhelmed by how much you're eating due to stress, boredom, addiction, whatever your thing is, you go on it again for 3 weeks...
3 weeks of self-control and boosting your self-confidence b/c you get results.
This diet fits me and my lifestyle perfectly... I'm now clinically the correct weight for my height. I hope you find success with it.
From my friends and I with food issues... THANK YOU.
PS: I cheat a bit and do free weights every other day instead of aerobic every day... but I also lead a hectic lifestyle and make an effort to be even more active. Not medical advice... just MY thing... but they say if you're muscles are sore you're burning calories.

I used this diet to lose about 30 pounds eight years ago and it worked. I kept that weight off, through using the information I learned in the book, for about six years - until I went back to school, became broke, stressed, and busy, and my good eating habits went out the window. Now, finished with school for the second time, I am back on it and so far so good. As has been explained, you follow "rotations" of calorie limits per day (3 days on 600, 4 on 900, then 7 on 1200, then back to another 3 on 600, 4 on 900). There is a menu for every day - something I like because I can just follow it and helps me to be less tempted to cheat - and I can look ahead and see what I am going to eat later on.
The thing to know about this diet is that you will be hungry on the low calorie rotations - but it will work, if you follow it closely (and are careful and reasonable with your substitutions). The good part is you only have to follow it so closely and strictly for three weeks - then work on maintaining until you try again.
Yeah, this is an old diet, but it is the only one that has worked for me...I believe in it. If you can do it - and you can if you buckle down for 21 days and put your mind to it - this will work!

I've been on many diets over the last 18 years and none of them compares to this diet on any level. I have been successful on this diet whenever I do it. I am a size 12 5'4" woman who has trouble losing weight and I just lost 15 pounds in one round (including 2 weeks maintenance)on this diet. That is diet amazing. You have to have the right mindset going into it and you have to stick with it even when it seems impossible, but you will achieve results. I don't follow the food plans of the diet at all.. I just do the calories.
I have found a few foods that have really, really helped so I want to share them. For breakfast I have one package of Quaker cinnamon roll oatmeal with 1/2 cup of applesauce stirred into it after it's cooked. I usually use those pre-portioned applesauces (50 calories) so it's really easy. Also, the thing that I just found this week is snack-sized cottage cheese. It's 90 calories and it keeps me from being hungry better than anything else for 90 calories. They are perfect. I buy yogurt (100 calories-key lime is the best), slim fast shakes (180 calories-cappucino flavor is delicious!!), 30 calorie fake cheese and 40 calorie bread (I toast the bread in the toaster, put cheese between 2 pieces and microwave the sandwich for *5* seconds to form a 110 calorie grilled cheese which is not that bad); wheat thins and tuna; and I fry eggs in no-cal butter spray and put them on 40 calorie toast with a little ketchup, salt and lot of pepper and it is very satisfying for 200-300 calories. I eat a 15 calorie popsicle when I want to eats something sweet. When I am starving and feeling like I might go off the diet, I eat as many dill pickles as my little heart desires with the caveat that I vow not to weigh myself the next day. Dill pickles are my go-to desperation food that I haul out when I can't do it otherwise. You will retain water, but you will have kept on your diet and that is the most important thing. Just don't weigh yourself the next day or your might lose motivation.
I eat the grand majority of my calories during the day before working out so I can actually focus at work. Then, I go home at night and eat at least a cup of sugar-free jello with a few tablespoons of lite cool whip on it. Then, I go to bed. Throughout the day I am prepared at all times with low calorie foods to eat. I don't find myself tempted to go get something because I have all my food with me all the time. I carry food in the trunk of my car, my refrigerator is never out of anything and I have food in my desk at work.
I've cut out caffeine for the most part except my 1 big cup of coffee in the morning. It's best not to drink soda, but if I do, I drink caffeine free diet soda. I've recently read that caffeine increases cortisol stress hormones in the body, which makes it hard to lose weight. Who knows if it's true, but I'm decreasing my caffeine anyway.
When you are hungry, go to bed. Get as much rest as possible. Between all the added rest you are getting (which also decreases your stress and cortisol levels) and the time that you are using exercising (I exercise medium intensity for at least an hour 5 days a week), then you only have less than 14 hours in a day to eat anything. Do as many non-food related activities as possible.
I hope this review is helpful. These are all the dieting tips I've got.

This is the third edition of the Nutrition Almanac that I have purchased over the years.
I find it an extremely valuable reference guide that I consult frequently. It has extensive information on vitamins, minerals, nutritional content of all the basic foods, health issues etc. It now also includes information on homeopathic remedies for a number of medical conditions...a welcome addition!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in health and nutrition.

When I ordered this book, I was anticipating giving away my old 4th edition for a new one with improved information. NOT SO!
The tables, the heart and soul of the book, have fewer foods and not more than the 4th edition. In a display of ignorant cost cutting, Carb counts for grains such as rice are given per cup of RAW not cooked product - same for macaroni whereas the 4th edition gives raw and cooked values. This alone makes it not worth the money but scattered throughout are foods that were there for 4th edition but are now gone.
The publisher probably saved money by eliminating pages but I can no longer recommend this book to friends; I advise them to not buy it but get a copy of the 4th edition instead.

While I do admit that the idea is nothing new (calorie and portion control equals weight loss), the thing that makes this book work is how this idea is laid out for the real world--where temptations and comfort foods abound and meals sometimes have to be as simple as a frozen dinner nuked in the microwave. Knowing that giving in to a slice of pizza or a bag of M&Ms isn't going to blow your entire diet can be motivation enough to actually make the changes many people need to do something about their weight.
For those who do have trouble limiting portions of "fun foods," the same calorie allowance can be distributed throughout your day in healthy choices, like an extra bit of spaghetti at dinner.
One gripe I do have is that I don't necessarily think her regular food choices are the healthiest, but once you have the hang of how many calories are in a meal you can definitely substitute your own choices for hers (I for one typically add at least one more serving of fruit and make sure I eat at least one HUGE salad a day while staying within her guidelines). Overall though, I think this is a great starting point for those who aren't ready to make radical changes to lose weight and a great guide for eating sensibly in the real world.

I have tried everything: WW, Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig, Atkins, Biggest Loser, etc. I own every diet book out there. I even tried the oil or sugar in the water diet. I usually couldn't even make it through one meal on a diet nevermind a day.
Finally I realized I just didn't want to lose weight.
Well of course I wanted to lose weight I just didn't know how to convince my head.
My mind set wasn't there. So I set out to find out how to get there.
I was watching The Joy Fit Club one morning which profiles people who lost 100 or more pounds & saw Joy Bauer. It was so inspirational to see so many women who lost 100+ lbs. I thought if they can do it so can I. I found Joy's book 90/10 & have been using it with The Beck Weight Loss Workbook which helps you change your behaviors for long-term results.
I love this diet. It is so satisfying! In the past anytime I ate "bad" or cheated, etc I would just throw in the towel. That day was gone so I could eat whatever I wanted & started another day..another Monday & it was a viscious cycle that made me start to hate who I now was.
You are never hungry. You can pick from a 1600, a 1400 or a 1200 calorie plan.
It really helps that you are allowed a fun food each day around 250 calories which can be ice cream, 4 milano cookies, etc. in the past when I had something like that the diet was over for me. Knowing that I can have that each day makes it so I never need to "cheat"
In the first week I lost 4 1/2 lbs & the results have been steady since. I am well on my way.
And for those who said it was confusing it makes me wonder if we read the same book. I can't even hook my dvd player to my tv & had no problems with this diet.
I was 1 week away from my surgical lap band surgery consult & this was the answer to my prayers.
If I can do it trust me YOU can do it!

I really like Joy Bauer. She is personable and tolls out sensible and realistic advice on the Today Show, however her book is very dissapointing. The menus provided are dull and without imagination. The "fun" foods as she calls them (the 10% part of her diet) are simply the saved calories from a spartan menu. Spend your money on Dr. Weil's first book(s). You'll actually enjoy the menus and learn about how to change your lifestyle to be healthier.

Don't waste your time or money on this one. "Scientifically designed" should imply the following: documented case studies, control groups, statistical analysis of the data (to support the 90/10 theory) followed by peer review in scientific journals. There is no evidence of "scientific design" present in this book. Unfortunately, this becomes one of the fad diets the author warns us about. In fact, she even cautions the reader about trans fats, only to condone eating foods that are notoriously loaded with trans fats (not all of us live in New York where trans fat are prohibited in restaurants). I will probably regret giving this book even one star because, although obviously an intelligent lady, the author is nevertheless naive and irresponsible with her unsubstantiated diet advice. "Fun Foods"? Give me a break! This means that it's okay to intermittently eat nutritionally deficient "junk foods" for well over a month throughout your year (10% of the time).

I have both this book and the other(Pres. for Nutritional Healing). I have found this book to be a great resource. I recommend it to all my friends and family whom I am trying to turn on to nutrition. It is a great "starter book" for people just into diet and nutrition and want to be educated about the things they put into their bodies. It is very informative and an easy read. It is a must for everybody out there wanting to learn about food, their bodies, and how they interact. A wonderful book.

I have searched long and hard for a reference book and this was a let down. I felt the content was mediocre at best and the details behind their "research" and claims were missing. I found a better resource on Inner Health that was very impressive at librarydepot.com It contained a Nutrition Benefits Chart that is unlike anything on the market.

I was greatly impressed with "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" and when buying this book had that in mind. Both Ms. Balch and Dr. Balch (husband?) produced a very informative work with that title and I'm very thankful for it, regardless of my thoughts toward "...Dietary Wellness".
I picked up a copy of this book today and have been reading it. I was struck by the counsel for total avoidance Ms. Balch gave to all forms of Capsicum (pepper), and the advice that one should avoid both black and white pepper, as well as rice.
I found no remarks as to why this should be the case (which would seem a no-brainer considering the obvious health benefits of Capsicum, assorted Piperaceae and rice in ones diet). 'Leaves me somewhat mystified.

I did not read this book; however, I took a look at the example diet, and I knew not to waste my money.
If you have gained weight because of elevated cortisol levels, you are most likely hypoglycemic. In other words, your body over-reacts to sugar and pumps out tons of insulin. When it does this, your body receives the message to store more fat. In his sample diet, he instructs the reader to eat fruit alone for a snack. That is the last thing you want to do. The fruit will drive up insulin and cortisol levels.
Also, it is common knowledge that all forms of coffee, even decaf raise insulin and cortisol levels. So why in the world would he list that on his diet????
Please, if you are having problems with your cortisol, get it checked first, don't assume. http://www.diagnostechs.com/main.htm
Also, a GREAT book on this subject is Adrenal Fatigue by Dr. Wilson.
I suspect the people who have given him the 5-star ratings know this author personally, or have not followed through with the outcome.

I picked up The Cortisol Connection on a business trip a year ago and read it cover to cover on the flight home to Boston. It was an easy read that provided lots of information about the science behind stress and its affect on the body. As a salesperson doing lots of travel it really was an eye opener on what stress was doing to my body.
My wife (mother to 3 kids under 5 at the time) also found Dr. Talbott's book to be extremely informative. Having tried different diets and weight loss supplements, she appreciated finally having information about how stress was affecting her ability to "shed the pounds".
In his second book, The Cortisol Connection Diet, Dr. Talbott provides more useful information and concrete examples of how to use his "SENSE" program to lead to an overall healthier lifestyle. Both my wife and I enjoyed this book as much as the first (it was an even easier read!!!)and look forward to putting some of the additional "tidbits" on reducing stress and proper diet to use.
If you've read the first book, you'll find this an excellent follow up. If you haven't read the first book, this one definitely stands on its own, although I'd recommend both.

If you have read any "diet" books from the past 10 years, and then attempted in vain to follow the advice in those books, you will really enjoy and appreciate reading the Cortisol Connection Diet. For starters, it's a very "easy read". It's as though you are listening to a casual conversation from a friend. The information is presented in a logical and easy to follow manner. I read the book cover to cover on a short plane ride. There were two particular aspects of the book that I thought were very unique and extremely helpful. First are the highlights at the end of each chapter. I have found myself on numerous occasions, going back to the book, reviewing the chapter highlights and quickly getting the information I was looking for. Secondly, the sample menu plans and daily logs at the end of the book were great! I would put this on anyone's "must read list"!
At last! The correct diet for stress symptoms!

I don't do stress well at all! After years as a first grade teacher and a stressful personal life, stress almost hospitalized me. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. I was running on a pure histamine. My adrenals were shot-no emergency energy! I was covered with rash, depressed when I could come down enough. My muscles were wasting away. Then my thyroid crashed and I could barely drag my legs around to walk. After the thyroid started up again, the doctors "blood type diet" didn't do much. Then I saw an article on Dr. Talbott in a magazine and followed the advice while I waited for the book to arrive. I've only been on the plan for 10 days and the depression is gone and, oh, yes the brain fog. I can do 30 minutes a day on my crosstrainer. I am sleeping better and feel more positive. All this after I had to quit work five years ago because this syndrome is so debilitating. Great book! Read it! Use it! It's for everyone since we're all living under stress. I'm into The Cortison Connection now. I fell like I'm giving myself a second chance at life and loving it.
If you're tired of starving to loose weight and want to eat to achieve a healthy body and spirit, this is the best. I don't have those awful sugar cravings anymore. Did I mention I was on heavy Prednisone for five years and had drug-induced hypoglycemia? Anyway, this food plan (it's not a diet because you're never hungry) is perfect. I was never able to get the weight to drop off and now it's coming off.
Thanks, Dr. Talbott. People like you come along far too infrequently. Penecillin and the polio vaccines for the 20th century. Obesity for the 21st! If anyone should question this books importance, open your eyes to how few fit people you see. We've been "digging our own graves with a spoon"! Examine the statistics. It makes perfect SENSE. It's soooo simple!

In a world where every "nutritionist" seems out to make a quick buck ("Lose 20 lbs in 20 days!!"), Barry Groves REALLY knows his stuff, biologically and practically speaking. It's clear that this man has spent most of his life studying nutrition and biology. He can produce study after study after study and explain its what they mean. The guy even goes back to studying prehistoric man and archaeological finds re: nutrition. This book is nothing if not THOROUGH. I've made nutrition a hobby (studying it, as well as practical application of course!!) and read many books and textbooks on biology and nutrition, and this book is one few that I would actually recommend to anyone. You won't just learn about how to lose weight, but about how your body really works, and how to be healthy for life. I'm not interested in Atkins or Southbeach or some other commercialized "diet".... and this really isn't like that at all. You'll learn a lot, and the truth shall set you free.

First of all, this is a must-read for anyone who is interested in healthy living the lowcarb way.
I have many friends who are following this plan and just love it. Not only is it easy to follow, it provides a good healthy weight loss that is easy to sustain.
This book is very clear in explaining the benefits of lowcarb eating and explains the healthy aspects of this plan for people who have chronic diseases, i,e., diabetes.
He is very insightful in providing a way to get our children eating in a healthy way from the start and not waiting until they are in jr. high and obese. Eating patterns are learned early.
I can't recommend this book enough..It's great!!

I was highly impressed with this book, and no doubt it is compelling reading. Above all, it is very accessible to the average reader who wants to dig deep into the "whys" and "wherefores" of low carb eating, all while absorbing an amazing array of detail. Mr. Groves appears to be under ratings attack on the net, and like Atkins and other revolutionary thinkers in the arena of low carb/high fat eating, the medical community still shuns these concepts. But medical credentials don't mean everything, and I'd say Barry Groves with his 40 years of study and personal experimentation and observation knows more on this subject than a hundred doctors collectively know. (Read: most doctors know virtually nothing about nutrition). While reading this book you can't help but be convinced by his very sound arguments for this way of eating. It all makes sense when you look at the data and examples he presents. I myself haven't yet implemented his precise recommendations, but I can say that my previous experience doing Atkins for about 6 weeks was amazing: I felt better than I'd ever felt (no grains, no dairy, no sugar) and I dropped weight effortlessly. There is something to this, no doubt about it. The only thing that still frightens me is the idea of possibly raising cholesterol etc. to higher levels. I guess I have a bit of trouble banishing my final degree of skepticism which I hold for all books on weight loss....Mr. Groves' ideas really do fly against the current thinking of most of the medical community, most of whom are sadly "in the dark" about nutritional issues beyond a very rudimentary level. Why should I believe anything they say? Look at the food pyramid! In any case, this really is one of the most fascinating books I have yet read in this subject area and I will be reading it more than once to absorb everything. Particularly if you are already committed to the idea of low carb eating as a way of life, this book greatly adds to your knowledge on the subject and will definitely strengthen your resolve to continue with this sort of diet for a lifetime of maintaining a healthy weight.

Another of the very few loud voices speaking out on behalf of a high-fat, low-carb diet in the UK is Dr. Barry Groves. With Dr. Atkins no longer with us, Dr. Groves has taken up the torch and carried it boldly and proudly for all the world to see. He's convinced that fat is not the source of our weight and health troubles--CARBOHYDRATES ARE! That's the underlying conclusion he shares in his book Natural Health & Weight Loss.
After years of researching, studying, writing, lecturing, and, most importantly, LIVING the low-carb lifestyle, Dr. Groves has a lifetime of experiences to share about how eating fat to replace carbohydrate in our diet will keep your body healthy, fit, and lean when a high-carb, low-fat diet fails you. He says people should eat more real food if they want to ward off the diseases that afflict so many people these days, namely obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
Of course, all of his claims are backed up by the research and his more than four decades of personal and professional experience. In fact, you can even check out a thread at my LowCarbDiscussion.com forum dedicated to people following Dr. Barry Groves for lots of support and assistance as you implement these principles into your life. Dr. Groves has even been known to pop in to make comments and answer questions from time to time, too. Natural Health & Weight Loss is a book that you'll be proud to own and I cannot encourage you enough to get it, love it, and then LIVE IT!

Even though fast food gets a bad rap, there are ways of eating healthier when having to eat out and this book shows you how. Sometimes foods may look better or worse than they seem because of hidden ingredients or factors you may not think of. This book helps you find the real numbers for a large variety of chain restaurants/fast food and takes the guesswork out of carb counting. I have my favorites marked with paper clips. I don't eat out without it.

I consider this book to be a completely indespensible resource for a diabetic. I've found this book to be useful in two different ways: #1 for just browsing through some of the restaurants and menu items to give you an idea about nutritional information in general. For example, you can peruse through a listing like "Starbucks" and learn how many carbs are in their various beverages, and then common things like bagels. Maybe you don't even like going to Starbucks, but such information is essential to know wherever you do go.
The second way this book is useful is to just pop in your suitcase or in your car when you travel. That way it just takes all the guesswork or awkwardness out of situations where you need to eat out, perhaps at restaurants you are not so familiar with. Just a quick glance at this book will tell you what will work for you and what won't.

Follow up..This is a very very expensive way to do a healthy detox and unreasonable I think...such a pretty box and well put together but just too much work and too expensive to purchase everything...sorry but there are so many other ways to do this that will not cost a fortune and with the same results so I am lowering this to 2 stars.

I loved the Detox Box! I am on my third week, and I have lost 7 pounds so far. I feel great, my skin feels wonderful, and I have energy to last me throughout the day. As a chocolate junkie, my biggest fear was that I would give into a craving, but surprisingly I did not crave any chocolate or carbs. The food in the program is designed to keep you full and often times, I was too full to eat everything. Many of the supplements don't taste great, but once you understand how it works with your body, it makes it all worth it. The shakes are delicious and the menu can be very varied if you try to make it so. Be prepared to dedicate time to make the broth and really follow through with everything on the cards, it is worth it. I have a full time job, a boyfriend, and a toddler, and I was able to do it. It is quite an investment, even after you buy the supplements, weekly trips to Wild Oats don't come cheap, but it really pays off.

I found this program because I was dealing with feelings of extreme mental and physical stagnation. I wanted to give myself a chance to pause and reconnect with my body. I opted to do the full three weeks; which went by much faster than expected. I kept a journal through the the whole experience which was a wonderful way to keep track of my progress. At the end I felt more grounded, much happier, and very proud of my ability to persevere.
Right now I am one week into my three week cleanse and I feel excellent. Spring is taking hold outdoors and I feel the same sense of newness and rejuvenation occurring within myself. It is important to not think of this process as a punishment. It is a great reward.
Don't listen to the skeptics. If you are considering doing this detox I recommend it wholeheartedly. Instead of spending money on material possessions or dinners out at restaurants; invest it in your health. Tailor the program to your needs and what feels best for you. And most importantly, take some time to really listen to yourself. You will feel empowered and happy that you did.

I am glad I spent the money and time on this book. It really opened up my eyes to a lot of things I never really thought about. I am now more conscious of what I do with my body. I have been recommending this book to all my friends around. Most of us really don't understand what we need to do to be healthy, or we think we are doing the right things while we aren't. This book really helps you to become as healthy as you can be. Are there more thorough detoxifications available? Probably, but few of us have the luxury of following them. The only other book that I can recommend with Detox Box is "Can We Live 150" with many cleansing recipes for the entire body. Check also Cure the Incurable
