I have recently gotten into some newer health movements like yoga and raw food eating, but enzymes and enzyme therapy are another great new wave that is coming up in the nutrition world. I especially like Bohanger's book because he puts the complex scientific ideas of how enzymes work into language that is simple enough for normal people to understand. I feel much more empowered about my own health and wellness, and the future of my health, now that I have read this book. If you are interested in maintaining your health in the long run, which all of us should be, you should definitely pick up a copy of this book and start practicing what Bohager teaches.
Can't put the book down.

At my local health food store I picked up 3 Enzymedica Product CDs. Two CDs were about all the Enzyme products and the 3rd was about their Probitic. While listening to one CD, Tom talked about his book a little. I was impressed listening to the CDs and couldn't wait to read the book.
The book goes into enough detail for someone who is a non medical type to learn and understand all about enzymes. The book doesn't specify to use Enzymedica products and lists several brands with web sites for further exploration. I plan on reading the book another 2 times for my comprehensive knowledge. My wife and I are currently using Enzymedica's Muco Stop, Digest and Virus Stop. The Muco Stop is the fastest acting product. When I get a runny nose, I take two capsules on an empty stomach and in half and hour no more sniffles. After taking Digest, I no longer am tired after meals.

As I reflect back on pages 7 through 116 some portions read like a health book. Examples being the chapters on the Importance of PH Balance and another chapter on Microflora (Bacteria) connection. Pages 119 through 240 are protocols for "specific aliments... that consist of enzyme therapy." "The protocols recommended is based on 8 years of practical applications with thousands of individuals."
Appendix I includes a simple enzyme deficiency test, which offers results along with the definition of deficient enzymes. Appendix II is how I expected the flow of this book to be . . "Dr Hiroyuki Sumi and his research of blood clot busting and the enzyme Nattokinase." Another example "cause of Glutin Intolerances." Nevertheless, I am suprised that there isn't an About the Author in the book given that the book discusses enzyme supplementations. Overall, this book is a good start on learning about enzymes.
No, I did not Google the author before or after I have read this book.

"Happiness is the pursuit of worthwhile goals."
The Pleasure Trap explains, in a readable and entertaining way, the physiological difference between pleasure and happiness. Just to illustrate, Elvis Presley probably had the most pleasure of any human being on Earth, but he was not happy.
The Pleasure Trap is a unique and valuable book on several levels, concerning happiness, health, and food, to name a few.
It shows us where happiness comes from, and that pursuing worthwile goals is the way to achieve it.
The book also explains the concept of Pleasure Traps, which we were not confronted with before modern times. Our natural instincts, which directed us perfectly in ancient times, are not tuned to deal with the Pleasure Traps of unnaturally plentiful sweet and fatty foods, drugs, and many more modern temptations. These Pleasure Traps give us pleasure, but do not give us happiness, and often rob us of our health.
This book equips a person to take control of their health by recognizing the Pleasure Traps of unhealthful food.
I loved the book, and benefited greatly from it.

This book shows a solution for me to get out of all food-traps I am in or might get in in the future. But what's more: it shows a way to live a healthy, free and happy life - if only you're willing to open your eyes to some truths and adapt your behaviour - I definitely am willing to do so. MUST READ - wish I had found it earlier.

This book was obviously written by a ivory towery PhD and an aspirant doctor. One major issues I had with the book was the authors comparing human behavior and congnition with an animal, namely a bird. We as humans share the perceptional(using senses) level of thinking with the animal kingdom. The authors failed to take into account; the cognitive level of thinking. This was more than likely from the pathetic mind (a PhD nonetheless) of Douglas Lisle who seems to be a huge follower of B.F. Skinner. Skinner basically believed that people were zombies who can't think for themselves and human's behaviors are only a series of neurons firing and hormones. Put this irrational line of reasoning with a chiropractor with an agenda to slam modern medicine and you have this book. Is what some of the authors say about addiction true? Yes. They stated the truth when they talked about what happens physiologically in regards to addiction, but completely left out the most important piece of the addiction puzzle; the poor philosophy behind the human behavior(addiction). They also state that cancer is caused by poor diet and genetics has nothing to do with cancer rate. Yes, poor diet can cause cancer but it is quite a leap in the arguement to state that genetics has nothing to do with it. There are multiple people, like Lance Armstrong, who were in incredible shape and ate a very strict, healthly diet and still got cancer at a very early age.
There are many other fallacies in this poor excuse for a book on addiction, but this would be too long to explain. Don't waste your money on this book.

This text is much more than a book on proper nutrition, diets, and eating habits as I originally thought. It takes you step by step with examples of why people live the way we do, including eating, sleeping, the use of drugs, and many other examples are included in the pleasure trap of modern day society.
I think it is well done despite one or two so so reviews.
The Pleasure Trap presents keen insights of our modern day society which are, in my view, critical to understand for anyone that wants to break free of the modern day pleasure trap. Without this understanding, (which I did not have before reading the book), one wonders aimlessly and frequently falls into the many traps that are not good for your overall health. Some people, I suppose, do not want to escape the traps and are content to indulge. But if you want to take ownership of your own health, and not rely on modern medicine to 'save you', read the book.

This is similar to other classics in the area of nutrition. The secret is out, obvious and will anyone follow it. Easy to read and easy to understand, what you eat determines your destiny in terms of health. eating nothing is better than eating poisonous food or a standard American diet.

My biggest problem with this book is that the treatment contained therein claims to help a host of broad problems. It seemed like another gimmick and there is no point to finishing the book if you already know about the food pyramid and proper common sense in taking care of yourself.
The suggestions in eating right, etc, are wonderful suggestions. Eat natural foods, (not the bread from the store that can contain up to 500% of the amount of yeast found in home made breads), etc. Too much yeast is not good for you but you don't need a book to tell you so.

I walked around with a bloated painful stomach for a year. The fatigue was debilitating, and and I was always in a fog. I did the phase one diet for five days and it was as if the fatigue and fog just washed out of my body. The greatest feeling was the clarity of thinking returning. Even if you don't read anything in the book, the diet is more than helpful; I think that understanding of this diet is essential if you have this problem. It will make a difference; for me the difference felt life-saving.

It is very convenient to come up with a vague diagnosis for vague symptoms. There is very little hard evidence to support this diagnsosis. I am sure that there are people who are sensitive or allergic to yeast who feel much better when they avoid it. I think the problem is that anyone who doesn't feel good has symptoms that fit into those attributed to this problem. Testimonial benefits are worthless. Watch late night TV for diet products, hair growth products, etc... if you doubt that. I do agree that if we all ate a natural preservative free diet, exercised, etc.. that we'd all feel better. I am just not ready to attribute that all to yeast hypersensitivity and the authors have very little real evidence that this condition exists or is the cause of problems for so many.

My doctor suggested this book, and this non-diet approach and I am grateful that he did. This book changed my life. It has not only helped me improve my relationship with food, it's improved my relationship with myself and with others. It has improved the over-all quality of my life. I will never diet again. This book easily explains the reasons why diets don't work from real-life perspectives. I was able to relate so well to the people who shared their experiences. The journey has been amazing. If you have struggled with food or eating disorders this book can change your life as well. It's probably the best purchase I have ever made.

Okay, sorry, maybe the title of my review was a little extreme but that was how I was starting to feel last year. For the last 23 years of my life I had been in a never ending battle with my weight and food. Every extra ounce of energy went into planning my next meal, wondering when I could eat again, dreaming and longing for the foods I wasn't "allowed" to eat and worrying about how many calories I'd consumed.
After losing and gaining the same 80 pounds twice, I lost 80 pounds again and was well on my way to gaining them all back for the third time. The thought of having to go on another diet filled me with despair and dread; I just knew I couldn't do it again. And, then by some small (or maybe big) miracle, Dr Michelle May and the "Am I Hungry?" program was introduced into my life.
Have you ever watched a baby eat? When they are done eating there is no way, no how you can make them eat without forcing them and in a similar manner, they will let you know EXACTLY when they are hungry and need to eat. As adults, we still have that inner wisdom in us - the little voice that tells us when to eat and when to stop when we've had enough. But, for me, years of dieting had beat that out of me. I could no longer tell when I was hungry and I sure as heck could not tell when I was full.
Let me tell you, when you can't feel or hear your own body's hunger and satiety signals, it sure makes it hard to stop eating when you've had enough!! As a result, I was constantly starving myself to lose weight and then overeating my way (because I couldn't hear my body tell me when to stop) back into weight gain. Am I Hungry? explained why diets never have and never will work as a long term solution. Am I Hungry? helped me get back in touch with my internal hunger cues and helped me learn how to tune back into that inner wisdom my body has about how much, what and when to eat. When you listen to your body, it will tell you EXACTLY what it needs!
So far I've lost a little weight and it continues to come off slowly. But, that is okay with me because I have found a way to eat and a way to live that I know will last me for a lifetime!

I have been waiting my entire life for this book! I have been on many diets and read many diet and nutrution books. This book teaches you what all those thin people naturally do. It explains why diets don't work and how they set us up to flucuate between restrictive eating and over eating by depriving us and how that messes up our metabolism setting us up for failure. It teaches that All Foods Fit and how to live an Active Lifestyle with out punishing ourselves with food and exercise. It even touches on how to cope with Emotional Eating however, I do still believe that there are deeper psychological reasons why we emotionally overeat and some may need further work in this area with a professional. I did find the nuturitional and exercise information news that I already knew, but she helps clarify some misconceptions around some of the diets out there. I highly recommend taking the 8 week teleclass on their website - It helps incorporate all of the tools in this book and is definately worth the money -(After all aren't you worth it?). I highly recommend this book over any other diet/nutrition book out there! I will be getting rid of all of my other diet books on my shelf and incorporating all of the tools for life.
This IS the last "diet" book I'll need...

I found this gem of a book while searching for another title. I read the positive reviews and thought that I should order the book. Why was I searching for a "diet" book? I lost about 55 pounds with an international (points driven) weight-loss plan and promptly begin gaining the weight back (about 25lbs to be exact). Wanting to avoid the lose-weight/gain weight back cycle, I realized that the program I was on did not really teach me how to eat. I could easily count points but the program did not teach me how to resolve my emotional eating issues. I needed a better solution. Hence my search and subsequent purchase of this wonderful book.
The book is easy to read and I will have it finished within a week. I applied the skills as I learned about them and have already lost 5lbs during my first reading. The book explains how to eat and each chapter focuses also on eating healthy (without telling you what to eat) and exercise. It is a comprehensive program that is different than any other "diet" book I have read prior.
While waiting for the book to be delivered to my home, I thought about returning to the "points" program but decided to wait until I receive this book in the mail. I am glad I did because now I feel asthough I can begin to live my life to the fullest because food no longer controls me because "Am I Hungry" puts ME in charge and not a set of rules from an outside authority.
What I hated most about overeating is that the habit caused me to be "out of myself" because my mind was occupied with thoughts about feeling uncomfortable in my clothes, guilt over what I just eat, thinking about what I was going to eat next and mentally beating myself up because I hadn't exercised in weeks. The "real me" couldn't shine forth because of my pre-occupation with eating, losing weight and hoping that no one was noticing the pounds I was packing back on. What a waste of time and energy !! Chapter 8 of the book, "Where Does My Energy Go?" resonated with me and is worth the price of the book alone. Consequently, my thoughts are freed-up because I am longer thinking about food all the time and I am able to devote my "full self" to other areas of my life. This IS freedom!!!
I have been blessed to find this book and also work with someone that is a Instinctive Eater. I often wondered how my co-worker could eat only part of the company paid lunch and leave the rest while I has devouring everything in sight. As I read, "Am I Hungry", I totally understand how and WHY he does it!!!
This book as been very liberating for me and I have read other diet books that claim to be the "only diet book you'll need", well "Am I Hungry" truely is the last "diet" book that any overeater or restrictive eater will need. In fact, it really isn't a diet book at all. Purchasing "Am I Hungry" is money well spent!
This book is one of those best kept secrets. I was amazed at the amount of info in this book. For anyone who has ever dieted and lost, this book is for you -- I mean it really is. I have battled weight gain for many years, and this is the first book that told me to master my hunger cravings. I am one of those people who often goes all day without eating, because as soon as I do, I cannot stop. Something kicks in and then I become a eating machine. This book stops that cycle permanently, and frees oneself of the curse.

At first blush this thick paperback made me think every food in the world must be in it! And a lot of food is (after all, where could you find the nutrition count of muskrat?!). I love the listings of chicken, for example, by the part or by the weight. And there is nutrition information for a lot of fast food and other dining places, too, which is great. I also love that the nutrition counts just don't focus on protein, but give other nutrients, and also calories.
But just the day after I got the book I discovered two omissions that I think are rather significant: only one or two Boca products are listed (this is a textured soy protein). I wanted to make chili with Boca crumbles and to see what the protein counts were on other Boca products and most were not available. (Yes, I know I can look at the label after I purchase the product. Or stand in the store and compare.)
Another omission was anything from Red Lobster. It seems like it would be easy to obtain the information (from any major restaurant chain) and include it. I wanted to be prepared before I dined there, so I would know what some good choices were. Again, I can obtain the information by going to their website (I hope), but that defeats the purpose of having the book!

My husband needs to control the amount of protein he eats a day. This book is excellent for this purpose. It's easy to use and very complete. It also includes the calories and fat grams for all the items listed as well as brand name items and restaurant chain foods.

After recently having wt. loss surgery, it has become necessary to learn foods that were high in protein. This book was very helpful in finding the protein count I needed.

Where I work the cafeteria is incorporating more healthy recipes as part of their menu, and listing points! I had the Steak a la Russe and warm spinach salad, and it won me over. The cafeteria substituted Tri-tip for the bison in the recipe and it was the BEST. I am ordering the book because of these two recipes and I look forward to more. Congrats to our cafeteria for taking an interest in the health & well being of their employees!

I have recently bought eight (!) Weight Watchers cookbooks from Amazon, and this is the first one I have been disappointed with. I have found it easy to buy or substitute ingredients called for in the other books, but less so with this one (elk steaks, anyone?) OK, it is an "All-American" cookbook, so perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. But this is a word of warning for would-be purchasers living outside the States. And it's puzzling that a few of the recipes call for vegetable shortening (copha). The last time I checked, this was a very unhealthy saturated fat, and definitely not recommend for anyone who is weight - or health - conscious. But my biggest gripe is that the few recipes I have tried so far have been bland or pretty ordinary - which has cetainly not been the case for the other Weight Watchers cookbooks. All up, not really recommended.

This is an excellent cookbook. Meals are healthy versions of homecooked food from the main regions of the U.S. I have already cooked several recipes and my family has loved them all. I have served dinner guests with "untested in my kitchen" recipes. The meal was great! Tonight I am using a fish recipe. Can't wait to taste. With cooking like this, dieting and eating healthy is quick and easy.

I can't speak for all the regions, but the section on southern food is amazing. Having grown up in the South where comfort food is often deep fried, I have really struggled to find authentic lowfat recipes. I can honestly say that the foods in this section were staples growing up (rather than what non-southern people think is southern food). All the recipes I have tried this far have been delicious!
I would recommend this book simply for this section alone, but the foods I have tried from other sections have been excellent too!

Five HEALTHFUL Stars!! In this great compendium Jerry Baker's expert nutrition team, Karen Cicero and Colleen Pierre, shows that many foods can not only taste good and be the source of healthful nutrients, but have healing powers that many of us may not be aware of and can apply in specific cases of need. In an age when we hear so many individual news stories on the benefits of a particular food, it's hard to remember them over time. Now we have one place to look for many common foods available to us all that pack a nutritional punch and HEAL. Not exhaustive to be sure, but a great reference book nonetheless that outlines common foods that it claims can fight cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, osteoperosis, memory loss, etc. And the benefit cited in most of the listed foods is the #1 killer in the US: heart disease.
This book is practically a summary of the healing powers and cures of a wide variety of specifically targeted foods. In addition, there is a "Shop and Serve Solutions" area for each food with tips on selecting, storing, and preparing them. And there are 111 easy-to-prepare healthful healing recipes. It also has great tables comparing the benefits of the varioius types of berries, another table on the benefits of various types of beans, and yet another on the various types of oils.
I know that a well-known health newsletter held a "Healthiest Vegetable" contest and their tests revealed the "Sweet Potato" (no skin) is the king of veggies, so I checked for it first and it's here, along with a great 'sweet potato fries' recipe. Incidentially, "Raw Carrots" and "Cooked Carrots" (yes, listed separately) come in second & third respectively among veggies and they are likewise listed with a really simple "Sugar Baby Carrots" recipe. The rest of the health magazine top five are: "Spinach", and "Collard Greens" (a great fighter against cataracts and macular degeneration). And they are all listed in this book with extensive data on their benefits. So this book is on target in the comparison with the health newsletter's extensive research results.
Laid out in alphabetical order, literally from A to Y, with a 'bullet list' of what each food "Battles", what it "Bolsters", and a table of it's nutritional value (calories, fat, saturated fat, sodium, cholesterol, etc..). Naturally, the first food is "Apples", which "Battles" cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and stroke. Apples "Bolsters" (bowel) regularity. And so on, all the way through 117 foods to "Yogurt" on p 485. On p. 490, there is a "Super-charged Menus" list of breakfasts, lunches and dinners for 7 days using recipes contained in the book. Very practical! it's a very readable book that may have you looking at some rather common foods differently and stocking up on them because of their benefits. It did so for me! This book could vastly improve your health or unknowingly save your life!! Five HUGE NUTRITIONAL Stars!!
(Hardcover, 510 Illustrated pages with large type fonts.)
