Tosca Reno's Eat-Clean Diet CookbookReview Date: 2008-10-04
This long awaited, eagerly anticipated cookbook is sure to please fans of Tosca Reno's overnight weight loss success story, who have been clamoring for more eat-clean recipes. Following up on the heels of best-seller The Eat-Clean DIET, which also included food guidelines and preparation ideas, The Eat-Clean DIET Cookbook takes readers to a whole new level of flavorful enjoyment.
The Eat-Clean DIET Cookbook features over 150 EASY recipes. Yes, they really are pretty easy, incorporating quicker stir-frys, crock pot cooking, handheld blenders, and food processors. Trying the Applesauce Oatmeal Muffins and the Power Oatmeal Pancakes, I found the recipes simple to prepare, low in sugar, protein adequate, and whole grain inclusive. Plus, my family loved them! Tosca Reno, herself a mom, knows the value of kid-approved meals. Many of the recipes are Canadian, Asian, and Mediterranean influenced, offering tastes for everyone.
Throughout the book, a bargain soft cover affordable to most, the Clean-Eating Principles Tosca Reno uses to maintain her weight loss, are applied:
Eat 5-6 small meals daily, every 2-3 hours.
Combine lean protein and complex carbs in each meal.
Drink a minimum of 2 liters/8cups of water daily.
Don't skip meals, especially breakfast.
Carry a cooler loaded with Clean-Eating foods for the day.
Avoid all over-processed, refined foods (white sugar, white flour), all trans and saturated fats, alcohol, calorie-dense foods with no nutritional value, sodas, colas, and juices.
Eat fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats.
Eat proper sized portions.
The Eat-Clean DIET Cookbook is eleven chapters long, beginning with Tosca Reno's acknowledgement of a "globesity" crisis hounding North America and a recap of her story in the Introduction. She explains the need to be a voice that speaks against "Super Size Me." Other chapters include Breakfast; Soup; Grains; Sauces, Spreads, and Salsas; One-Dish Meals; Proteins; Vegetables; Pasta; Sweets; A Festive Occasion; and a Question & Answer section, which covers the most popular queries the author receives.
Tosca Reno introduces novel foods to readers--Vegetarian Chili (with dark chocolate as an ingredient), Yogurt Cheese, Olive Butter Spread, Wild-Grains Rice Pilaf (using a wheat berries and whole wheat couscous), and Quinoa With Oats. The photos of the dishes are dynamically maximized and beautiful.
Another noteworthy point are valuable charts and explanations. Such as, "What Does 25 Grams of Protein Look Like," which details the calorie count and amount necessary for preparation.
Tosca Reno, herself the "formerly fat housewife turned fit," understands what it takes to physically transform the body. She notes that the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that 65 percent of North Americans are overweight. After weighing in at 200lbs plus and losing over 70lbs, Tosca Reno committed herself to eating-clean. The Eat-Clean DIET Cookbook is her testament to fantastic health.

This "expanded edition" is totally unfair to all the customers who bought the original version, which has 90% identical info, with just a few extra sections added. She could have simply marketed a cheaper supplement to the original book, for her existing customers, instead of reaming them for full price again. GREEDY.
If you are an Oxygen or Clean Eating magazine reader (yes, both published by her husband), you'll have ALL the recipes you need within a few issues. Seriously. Don't waste your money on products from this exploitive publishing empire.
Instead, Google "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" by Tom Venuto. It's a single volume, COMPREHENSIVE downloadable e-book, with nothing but solid info - no superficial fluff, no illustrations, inspiring, easy to follow and implement. It's ONE BOOK containing the EXACT SAME INFO as Tosca is putting out in multiple books. You pay once, and that's it. You have all the info you need.
PLEASE DO NOT GET SUCKERED INTO MAKING THIS WOMAN AND HER PUBLISHER HUSBAND RICHER THAN THEY ALREADY ARE.

great for a novice raw foodieReview Date: 2008-10-11
It was one of the first raw cook books I ever purchased, and it made the preparation of raw dishes seem less foreign. However, I am an accomplished chef, so I did find many of the recipes to be way too easy. Even if you are new to raw food, if you have a lot of cooking experience you might want to find something a little more challenging.

Wisdom Beyond their YearsReview Date: 2008-06-24
Fresh includes "over 250 recipes from the Raw Family test-kitchen," both favorites from earlier Boutenko books, as well as new recipes using raw cacao, goji berries and wild edibles. They offer full color photographs of common "wild foods" like nettles, sheep sorrel, chickweed and purslane often belittled as "weeds" and show how such no-cost foods can supercharge salads and smoothies without breaking the bank. Readers who recall stories of the Boutenkos foraging for wild lettuce and berries on their Pacific Coast Trail hiking journey can now harvest some of nature's best superfoods at home. The book lists the twenty-three most toxic plants (excluding mushrooms) and encourages readers to be safe and learn how to identify them. Despite this warning, Fresh focuses on the abundance of nutritionally dense and beneficial plants available sometimes, quite literally, in our own backyard!
All recipes exclude meat, fish, eggs, and dairy, but some do contain honey. Vegans can easily substitute raw agave nectar or dates for the honey, though. In fact, Sergei writes an entire section on the importance of improvisation and customization. For those with gluten allergies, this book offers an almost gluten-free experience. A few recipes call for sprouted barley or rolled oats, but the vast majority are completely gluten-free, vegan and tasty!
Besides recipes, Fresh offers some of the best advice on how to thrive in mixed-diet relationships. Whether vegan, raw, vegetarian, carnivore or omnivore, you will find valuable tips on how to maintain your dietary preferences in a non-judging and non-threatening way. Valya, in particular, offers valuable insight into helping children choose and enjoy healthier foods. Given the epidemics of childhood obesity and childhood diabetes from which Sergei healed naturally this information provides hope and instruction to well-meaning parents dealing with "rebellious" eaters.
Because Sergei and Valya spent much of their childhood as raw foodists, they can offer insider advice from both angles that of instructors and that of children forced to embrace a new and unusual dietary regime. From them, we learn how they dealt with teasing, peer pressure and social services. With humor, gratitude, and wisdom beyond their years, they reveal a perspective that few, if any, others can share yet.
Chef Cherie Soria, founder and director of the Living Light Culinary Institute, where both Sergei and Valya have trained, provides a heartfelt forward. In Cherie's words,"Sergei and Valya shine as living examples of what is possible when we resolve to squeeze every drop of juice out of life." On a recent visit to Living Light, I repeatedly heard this idea validated by students, visitors and employees. The compassion, presence and creativity one finds in Fresh will touch the lives of anyone who reads it, just as Sergei and Valya's love, clarity and maturity continue to impress and inspire in person.

Fabulous bookReview Date: 2008-06-27
This book uses simple, available ingredients and a minimum of time to prepare. I can usually prepare a dish from what's already in my house, which if you've used any other book, is usually impossible. Yes you might need to blend something and then dehydrate it, but you probably didn't have to soak it and juice it and hang it somewhere first.
The other thing I really like about the book is that if you use their recipes for salad dressings, for example, you are not just adding flavor, but you are also adding nutritional content. It's all very well thought-out. It's a lovely little book that I recommend to anyone who is interested in making simple, elegant raw food dishes that taste great.

A Great ResourceReview Date: 2008-08-03
My son is only 9 weeks old now, so he's not quite ready to begin sampling these great foods, but I figured that summer is the perfect time to catch foods at the farmer's markets while they are in season and at their freshest. I can start making, freezing and perhaps even canning some of the recipes so that they are ready when my son is ready. This book is a great resource to have at home. Don't be afraid to try making your own baby food. With my first child, I remember standing in line at the grocery store lining the conveyor belt with tons of jars of food. I never thought that I could make my own food. Between that time and the birth of my second child, I started down the organic road and realized I could make my own food. "Duh! What did people do years ago before jarred baby food!" I thought to myself. It really is easy to do but it just takes time. If you're willing to take that time, you'll benefit from buying this book!

ignore all the pics of ani and you'll be fineReview Date: 2008-10-11
Sure, when I was thumbing through it I got a bit peeved at all the silly pictures of pretty Ani and her raw-food-eating-planet-saving-self. And yeah, I kinda felt like beating my head into the wall after reading all her blurbs on living green and loving animals and all that stuff. I mean, jeez, it's a COOKBOOK.
but then i realized just how much thought she put into her cookbook, and how proud she must be of the recipes and the book as a whole... and you know- that's pretty nice.
besides, sarma and mathew's book (raw food real world) is littered with cutesy couples pictures. ani won points for not going THAT far off the deep end. i much preferred the pictures of her dog, kanga.
do you think raw foodists are just more prone to being elitist snobs that are in love with themselves? meh, i forgive them.

Some good information, the rest is garbageReview Date: 2008-04-07
The author right off the bat says that if you are going to fast, you REALLY need to fast without ANY intake of food except water, but if you are going to juice fast, this is how you do it. He concentrated more on fasting than juice fasting, which seems to make this book title mis-leading.
He also goes as far as saying that self-purging (finger down the throat) may be required to purge the body of inpurities. Whoa, time out, that is a bit extreme.
I cannot give the book just one star, because there was some good information in there about fasting symptoms and other general tid-bits, but since this author has absolutely no credentials, I would seriously question anything he suggests to do.
