This book is chock-full of vital information on the subject. The issue is that it is not an easy read. The words are small and it seems as if the info just goes on and on and on with no page breaks or chapter reviews often. But because of the good content, I've decided to keep the book instead of selling it back.

I recently reviewed Subjects Matter, which is the same basic concept of this book. I feel the same about both books. I was assigned both books while obtaining my teaching certificate in college. They have useful strategies for helping student learn to read different types of books but the authors assume the teachers have extra time in class to teach these tactics. Unfortunately, most high school teachers are hampered by the amount of information to teach in their subject areas that it is difficult to implement the books' suggestions. Teachers can help those students during tutoring which makes the books useful.
I believe these books are great for middle school teacher who are not under the TAKS test deadline as in high school, especially 11th grade teachers.

We are all reading teachers. We must teach the students to read so they will be able to succeed in all subjects.
This book has strategies for all teachers. The author makes some good points when describing an encounter with an industrial arts teacher who said, "students don't have to read in my class."
This book will show you how to make connections in your subject area to reading.
If you teach a student to read, they can do anything.

We are using this book as a book study group in our elementary school It serves as a great springboard for conversation about teaching strategies and learning. The book provides insights to new teachers as well as seasoned teachers and can serve as a way to share and reflect as a learning and teaching community.

I purchased this book based on a review I read in a popular teacher magazine put out by Scholastic. I was looking for a book I could read quickly and find information that would help me understand how my language affects my students. This book did give me that information, but I had to search for it, something I did not have the time to do. I wonder who the the targeted audience was for this book? Certainly not an overwelmed 2nd year 4th grade teacher with 26 students.

This is an important work for any teacher to read. It helps the teacher focus on how he or she can actively shape a student's identity by helping the student to develop a firm concept of self. Detailed questions and examples are given. I found this work very helpful to think about, although I don't intend to teach reading or become a reading coach. The work has helped guide me into thinking about how to turn students into powerful, confident, human beings.

I couldn't put it down--which is often said of a novel, but maybe not so often about a professional book. I truly read the book for six hours, and only took a few breaks. I started out highlighting what I found provocative, but soon realized that that wasn't enough. I got out my post-its, and began to note bits of wisdom I didn't want to forget. I think I must have added 50 post-its!! It's not that the information is so new, but rather that it is such a reminder and "emphasizer" about how we talk to children, and treat them in our classrooms. I thank Mr. Johnston for his thoughtful approach, and love the organization of the book. I've shared bits and pieces of what I've read with the staff at my school, and plan to continue to do so for the rest of the year. I've ordered two more copies of the book to share with colleagues. Thank you for this inspiring book.

I'm currently taking a 2 credit class that is using this book as its material. I do not feel as though I got what I was looking for.
If you are looking for a program that has practical advice that can be applied instantly to do better in school, this book isn't for you. I am tired of exploring my inner demons and frustrations. This should be Dr. Phil for College Students.
I gave it 3 stars for some helpful self management tools and notetaking methods.
Bottom line: The book is overpriced and didn't live up to my expectations.

This is our second purchase of the Story of the World series. All three of my school age kids (6,8,10 yrs.) just love to listen to these tapes. It is giving all of us (mom included) a much more comprehensive picture of all the parts of history we have learned with other books. We highly recommend this product for your family as a history program or just for listening to in the car for fun. The acitvity book is also full of great ideas for making this as involved or as simple as you would like it to be.

It's fascinating to learn ways to easily and quickly get answers to spur-of-the-moment mathematical calculations without the need for pencil and paper. Besides a I-wonder-why-this-wasn't-taught-in-school reverse technique for mentally, quickly and easily adding, subtracting and multiplying, it's especially neat to be able to determine the day of the week for any calendar date in any century! The author shows how and makes it simple. The techniques work better for those who know well their multiplication tables and their sums. If one doesn't, getting answers is doable but takes longer.

This book is great! This book teaches you tricks that really work and really makes you wonder how people came up with them.
One thing I wanted to reccommend - Although this book is for mental math, going through it, I always kept a pencil and paper by my side - some of the concepts/tricks were a little abstract to simply read and absorb the first time around, so they needed a couple of examples (on paper) to solidify the 'trick' for me. After I worked out a couple of problems on pen and paper, I was able to grasp the ability to do them mentally.
One of the best things this book teaches is guesstimation and more importantly, how to forumulate your 'guesses' so you are not so far off from target. I had been doing guesstimation for ages but the methods mentioned in the book were pretty good guidelines for my future guesses.
This book is a must have for anyone that is afraid of numbers because these simple tricks will make difficult math problems a little easier to deal with. The time saving techniques this book is filled with can shave seconds off of your problem solving skills which, come test time (math test, SAT, any test which involves math), you'll be thinking about this book and thanking the author.

I recently purchased this book after a stranger in a bookstore suggested it. I'm already impressed. There are quite a few 'speed math' books out there, but this one is easily accessible to everyone and is intended to help with everyday life. I'm fairly advanced in college-level math and I intuitively knew some of the suggestions in the book, but it has helped me brush up, learn new things, and most of all learn how to do it BETTER.
I highly recommend this book to students because it is a tremendous help to know how to perform quick math in your head. Even if you have a calculator, just knowing what to expect for the outcome helps you perform faster and serves as a double-check when you need it. And knowing how to do math quickly is essential on a standardized test like the SAT. Even if you know how to do all the problems correctly, the time limit can cripple you--so do yourself a favor and get this book.
Some of the topics covered in this book include 'basic' to 'advanced' multiplication, mental division, guesstimation, calculating the day of the week, and memorizing numbers through mnemonics.

This book (3rd Ed.) was my only source to pass all 3 CTEL sections the first time (whew)!! I combined it with the outline given at the CTEL website under "study guide". Basically, I used it to answer the study guide questions from the website.
I knew this book was the bomb when a guy who had taken a $1000. prep course and who sat behind me during the test in Daly City said his instructor taught out of the same book.
I only started skimming the book a week before the exam, BUT I did answer the study guide questions several days before the exam then I crammed.
The material is very logical, but details are a necessity for the 3 essay questions. Good luck!!

I bought this book to try and gain control of my classroom. I was brought in shortly after the school year started and have faced many challenges since then. This book has offered some wonderful ideas that I will most likely use next year, but it does not address how to put these things into place after the school year has started. I have been figuring that out on my own.
The behavior section is very helpful as it offers great ideas on how to address behavior as it happens.
Overall, this book is well written and organized. It has been helpful, but I wish it had more on how to implement after the year has begun.

I was very disappointed to find that the DVD you get with this book is just a cheap infomercial for some other book or DVD set that Fred Jones has produced. It was really useless. You might as well throw the DVD into the trash.

I consider this book pricey for what it is, but I needed it for a class. I found it to be very informative, and yet an easy read.

I have used this book in a graduate classroom and it has been very good for my students to learn to do action research in their schools.

I teach graduate level research courses and reviewed this book for the publisher. There are so many errors in this book that I cannot even begin to list them. I could not in all practicality use this book with my students because of the multiple theoretical and conceptual errors. Another reviewer suggested graduate students get the book because it is helpful. As a professor I would not agree. There are many other texts that do a much better job discussing Action Research that are more practical, precise, make relevant connections to practice, and offer theoretical and conceptual accuracies.
In accurate for teaching and learning!

There are too many errors in this book. I used it in my class for a couple of weeks and found many errors. Too many errors to continue using it to educate teachers. I would not recommend this book to anyone, especially if they are trying to learn from it.
