I had the honor to see Ms. Connors speak at a teacher conference this past week. I was feeling a bit jaded over the profession of teaching after completing my second year of teaching and after completing a research study proposal on the sad state of teacher retention due to low administrative support. I was at an oh-too-typical low point...

Ms. Connors' words (both in spoken and written form--I flew through her book after listening to her speech) really hit home. This is a book that every teacher and every administrator should read. It gives simple solutions that could and would make a big impact upon the current state of education today. I encourage every person involved in teaching students to read this book and think about the roles they currently play and the role they could play. THANK-YOU MS. CONNORS for humorously yet seriously pointing out both the problem and the necessary solutions.

Often inaccurate

Review Date: 2008-07-03
It's a decent workbook in some respects and helps learning the difference between a statement (with a period) and question (with a question mark), common nouns, plural nouns and irregular verbs. It's only about 60 pages long, so don't expect anything comprehensive. But my biggest complaint is that the directions are incorrect. So it will say, for instance, "look at the underlined word(s)" to determine whether a sentence is correct or incorrect.

And then will include in the answer sheet, words that are not underlined. For instance "will you see the vet again? is marked as inaccurate by them b/c "will" is not capitalized, but it's not underlined, so how would a child know they are supposed to include that, given they have been told to only look at the underlined words?

I think it's poorly executed and would look for a different workbook.

I like to use two or three different textbooks per subject. Scholastic wins my approval, as well as Dorling Kindersley, Learning Horizons and School Zone products. We are currently using "Scholastic Success with 1st Grade Workbook; Math, Reading, Writing, Grammar and Maps." I really like their presentation of topics in each workbook. They tell you what is to be learned, give good practice pages, then assess what has been learned after each section. I am homeschooling my first grader and am very pleased with Scholastic's approach to learning. I have previous experience as an elementary school principal and head teacher in a multi-grade school. I plan to use Scholastic books as much as possible.

Good writing cannot be achieved overnight. Young kids need to learn and write often to build their skills. Grammar is often left to intuition in school. Taking tests will help to clarify the right way from the wrong ways explicitly. My child used this book for assessment as well as for learning. Very good contents worth every penny we spent. The book is short though; my child finished it in 3 weeks. Looking for similar tests, I found Beestar (www.beestar.org) pretty good, too. My child's writing and test skills are definitely improving with such grammar drills.

I recently reviewed Subjects Matter, which is the same basic concept of this book. I feel the same about both books. I was assigned both books while obtaining my teaching certificate in college. They have useful strategies for helping student learn to read different types of books but the authors assume the teachers have extra time in class to teach these tactics. Unfortunately, most high school teachers are hampered by the amount of information to teach in their subject areas that it is difficult to implement the books' suggestions. Teachers can help those students during tutoring which makes the books useful.

I believe these books are great for middle school teacher who are not under the TAKS test deadline as in high school, especially 11th grade teachers.

Practical Strategies to Improve Reading
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-04
For someone looking for some practical strategies to help struggling readers make progress, there isn't a better place to look than this book. Tovani provides a number of strategies along with templates and appendices to help teachers put her ideas into immediate practice. And the strategies are good ones that should provide help to teachers, something too often sorely lacking in these kinds of books.

Tovani is also an excellent writer who provides a number of inspirational anecdotes from her own teaching and workshop experience. She writes about how her strategies can be used in a variety of curricular settings because, in this world of "writing across the curriculum," teachers in every subject area need to be able to address reading issues. And many of her anecdotes illustrate the "push back" we often see from teachers who feel this is just another thing they're being unfairly asked to do.

If there is a weakness in her book, it is that she doesn't show how to make that important transition from a reader who needs these strategies to a reader who has internalized these strategies and become a good reader. It seems from her approach that college students and young people working their first jobs are going to be pulling out double entry diaries and the like to help them interpret what they have to read. This is unlikely, of course, but it isn't clear from Tovani's work how to wean students from her strategies and what to do if good readers rebel against using them since, for good readers, this constant use of graphic organizers and so on could interfere with their joy and success in reading.

Still, the struggles that many students have with reading makes a book like this useful and necessary as do the struggles that many teachers have helping their students improve their reading skills. Tovani clearly knows what she's doing and her work is a great asset to those of us trying to improve instruction.

We are all reading teachers. We must teach the students to read so they will be able to succeed in all subjects.

This book has strategies for all teachers. The author makes some good points when describing an encounter with an industrial arts teacher who said, "students don't have to read in my class."

This book will show you how to make connections in your subject area to reading.

If you teach a student to read, they can do anything.

I purchased this study guide after reading several of the reviews. I am too impressed with the overall quality of this book. It provides preview tests and practice tests for Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9 and 7-12. I began studying three months before the test and used one other reference text book; Effective Teaching Methods by Gary D. Borich. I passed both the Elementary Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and the Content Area Exercise on the first try. Now on to student teaching--Yeah!!

I read this book through as soon as I received it. Tomlinson is well-respected in her field. Most everything I have read concerns gifted students. This is an excellent resource for ALL students. Differentiation is absolutely necessary in today's classrooms. If all students are to reach their full potential, we must meet them where they are -- and they are all over the place! With so many learners requiring different strategies, finding a way to reach every child is a daunting task. This book gives you the strategies in clear, concise language. The information can be adapted to any subject area or age group. I wish every teacher in my school would read this book!

Should be part of every teacher's library...

Carol Ann Tomlinson's book shows teachers how to meet the needs of the wide range of abilities found in most classrooms through effective instructional grouping strategies. Differentiating curriculum is one of the most, if not the most, important skills for teachers to master in order to help all kids reach their full potential. Ms. Tomilson's techniques show teachers how to reach all levels of students - from those needing remediation - to the more advanced learner who needs a faster pace, more independence, and a more in- depth curriculum to thrive. Practical and clearly written... highly recommended.

The number/rating scale helps children gauge their own level of anxiety without having to come up with the right words to say and then gives them the tools to calm themselves down instead of hitting, biting, etc. Highly recommended!!

This book is an excellent tool for children having diffiulties controlling their emotions. The visual thermometer and the "social story" makes it very helpful to assist these children to learn how to respond to their feelings/emotions more appropriately. My four year old likes to look at his thermometer and read the story every time he has reached a "5". It's been very helpful for him.

I focus mostly on matters not elaborated by the other reviewers. This book lists several characteristics of children of each of the elementary grades (K through 8), ideas for positive rewards for children of different ages, the deployment of classroom centers, methods of filing important information, indoor and outdoor games, websites for teachers, and much more. As an experienced educator, I tend to agree with the reviewer who suggests that this book is more applicable to the teaching of younger grades than older ones.

This is a fine book for kids to learn and practice English grammars. Many kids read well, but cannot write decent sentences. An early start in grammar makes a big difference. The book supplies well-designed questions and multiple-choice problems to teach and enforce the essential language rules. They are vivid and interesting. My child has a much better writing after using this book. I hope it had more pages. For additional such practices, we also use a nice web site (www.beestar.org) that provides exercises similar to this book. They both do a fine job of improving kids' language level. Highly recommend.

This was a required text for a M.Ed. class. The practices in this book are almost perfectly aligned with Massachusetts frameworks and the Connnected Math Project (CMP) text used by my district (Lowell). This book is very rich with lesson plan fodder and takes pains to explain the 'why' of CMP as well as the how. I'll be relying on this book for years to come.
