We added this to our curriculum for English for 8th grade. It is very simple and my boys learn well from it. They even look forward to to it. I suggest it for everyone, especially those who dred English. We do a few pages every week and incorporate it with our other curriculum. Simple!!

I have used this book in my standard and Montessori-based classrooms for five years and could not do without it. It is by far the most creative, most fun and most memorable way to teach parts of speech while simultaneously utilizing creative and technical writing skills. I have used this book with grades four through ten, modifying assignments as needed, and had great success. The students enjoy it and so do I.
The book is organized by parts of speech. There are brief, informative lessons, and short answer and short essay questions, all of which are off-beat and fun. This is a book that can be used by a teacher as a resource or as a consumable by a class. I recommend it highly.

I would give this book more stars if I could! First of all...it is spiral bound! All teacher books should be make this way. It is so easy to make nice photocopies without having to break the binding of the book.
The activities are wonderful and captivating for the students. I teach middle school learning support students who dreaded English classes. They actually look forward to sharing their papers with the class.

I just took the CTEL exam today, and I sure am glad that I didn't take it before reading this book. Most of the information over which we were tested was explained in the book. Along with the flashcards, I think this is a wise investment.

I'm using the book in my class on Working with English Language Learners. It is an informative book for someone who has not experienced that in their classroom. I will say though that the author makes her opinions well known on the US government policies around immigration and it is not a conservative opinion. Her call to teachers for activism is a bit much for my taste.

Though this book is a great introduction to special education, I was surprised by the number of technical errors and typos it contained. I'd say I found at least 2-3 in each chapter! Certainly this doesn't affect the quality of the information, but when I read a textbook (particularly when I pay as much as I did for this one), I expect a thoroughly professional presentation. I was quite unimpressed with whoever did the text editing for this book. I also hate books that have lots of margin notes (the kind that are meant to act as a 'quick find' tool), extra text boxes, etc. - it makes it much more difficult to read sequentially.

I became interested in this method of schooling the first time I ever read about it. I had yanked my four year old son from his preschool program because he had gone from a normal happy preschooler to a biting, kicking, swearing little monster. He also has a speech delay, which did not help matters at all because we could not understand what he was talking about when he tried to tell us what was happening during his day.
His father and I decided to homeschool him until he's six, upon which time we will enroll him with the local charter school. So I started researching different methods and the first time I saw this I fell in love. But my heart sank when I saw just how expensive the equipment is. I was also dissapointed when I discovered that we have a local Montessori school only to find out it cost more than we make in a month. My husband is a full time student on a very low, limited income. I could not in good concious sanction spending that kind of money. So I read everything, online and books, that I could get my hands on. And while all I read talked of the different methods, it never said how to implement them.
I saw this at Paperback Swap (awesome site) and snagged it on impulse. I am so glad that I did. It gave me everything I needed to get a start. It helped me understand the resources I already had and told me how to pull them together in a cohesive whole. I have four children ranging from 8 months - 4.5 years. The three oldest think it's great and they are so proud of themselves every day. Even my husband got in on it and helped me construct several items. We both love this book and I reccomend it to everyone that talks about teaching Montessori.
I also reccomend Seven Times the Sun: Guiding Your Child Through the Rhythms of the Day by Shea Darian

I am a medical student, single parent and needed something to introduce me & my daughter to Montessori instruction. I plan to enroll my 36 month old soon, but at this time, she is fine in the care of her grandparents and in the evenings, with me. Until she begins Montessori, I want to begin instilling some of the instructions. I ordered this book along with one other you will notice in my reviewed items. Both books are very good in my opinion, and all that I need. Even if I never enroll her in daycare, preschool, this is adequate. It gives great ideas that a parent or caregiver can share while with the child. Very good quality book.

This book is everything I needed in a law school prep book and more. Although the author goes above and beyond with his method for success, this is geared to make a lasting impression on the reader. Very easy to read, and side notes informative. It was an excellent preparatory book for the summer before school.

Mr. Tonsing's manual is a useful volume for anyone preparing for law school. Not only is it filled with helpful tips on how to brief a case, take notes, and write course summaries, but it also motivates the student to enter law school as a lawyer, not a student.
There is no doubt that Mr. Tonsing is committed to helping the reader do his best in law school.
However, while there are many gems in book, overall the prose is weak, and often times just corny. The author pedantically defines words like 'equestrian' and 'loophole' for his reader, and goes off the deep end near the end of the book suggesting that law students cover the walls of their apartments with burlap to make enormous wall charts. I suppose it may work for some . . . but it reminds me of Russell Crowe's schizophrenic character in "A Beautiful Mind," and while that character was brilliant he was also crazy.
This is certainly not the worst law school book out there, but I would shop around before deciding to purchase "1000 Days. . ."

I first picked this book up when I was a 1L student who had struggled with my first semester grades. I found the techniques and skills in "1000 Days" to be extremely helpful. I have read many law school study technique books, but this is clearly a cut above the rest. The chapters are very clearly written and provide a solid roadmap to improving any student's grades. Tonsing instructs the student on how to attack lawschool study from a variety of angles, the most important technique probably being the writing of hypothetical problems each week. After a semester of practice in writing and spotting issues, dominating the final exam becomes much easier. I stuck to Tonsing's advice and applied it to every course for 3 years of lawschool with dramatic improvements in my grade. I can honestly say that this book gives you the power to excell in any exam, from torts to Administrative law to Secured Transactions, it doesn't matter. A+.

This book, like several others in this genre, provides the reader with different nuances on how to brief cases, take lecture notes, study for exams and other components that every other book in this field suggests.
This book is a rather long and difficult read. It contains a few decent suggestions on study aids, but one can receive this information from practically any other pre-law book or website.
My suggestion is to stick to other pre-law books and not waste your money on this one.
Upcoming 2L.

Regardless if you are teaching elementary school or middle school, you have students in your classroom who are poor readers and writers. Janet Allen's book -- all of them, for that matter -- are comprehensive guides to providing tips and strategies on how to assist them to "own their learning." So many pages of this book are folded down, as a means to remind me to use the strategy in my own classroom. Her book recommendations are also very handy, especially when you want to model different instructional strategies on learning new vocabulary while reading.
I can't say enough about this book and the rest of Allen's books without sounding like I am repeating myself. As an educator, I value good books that help me to become a better teacher -- this is such a book. You will not be disappointed.

Janet Allen has done a terrific job of blending theory with practice. Taking the last twenty years of research on vocabulary, Allen synthesizes the major guiding principles and illustrates a variety of strategies for helping students to acquire and develop vocabulary. As always, Allen writes in a clear, reader-friendly, no-nonsense style--a refreshing change from many of the language arts books in the field. As a reading specialist for the past twenty years, I highly recommend her new book.

My favorite section was an idea on how to use alphabet books with older students. I plan to incorporate this lesson in my classroom.
All teachers should buy this book. This is also a great book for a professional book study.

Bought this for my fifth grader to increase her vocabulary. It's excellent and she is making great strides. It has inspired her to use the dictionary more frequently to find definitions as well. This was a great buy!

If you are looking for a great word study book that not only gives you great reproducibles moreover it gives you great ideas on how to extend your word study lessons. I use this book with my 8th grade ELA classes and they actually have been applying the words to their writing.

If your child needs to review vocabulary or if you are a homeschooler I recommend this series. We've used them and have been very pleased with the word groups and the lesson content. It has helped to improve my son's vocabulary and spelling as well as helped with reading comprehension b/c of his expanded vocabulary.

I bought Summer Smarts along with another series called, Summer Bridge Activites. Both books support practice of school skills over the summer. I love how this book looks sort of like a coloring book. My son has enjoyed coloring the pages after he completes them. Unlike the other series I mentioned, this book also encourages critical thinking. My son and I have had great conversations while he was working on his pages. I think this is a great book for kids because it isn't too difficult or frustrating.

As a former second grade teacher, I found this book an excellent preparation for second graders. There are many concepts and skills that are normally taught in late first grade or in second grade. The pages are well presented and have a fun element to them. The book would be appropriate to use throughout the second grade year as some of the sections may be somewhat difficult for before the school year starts. I bought it for a child who will start second grade this year and he loved it. His comment was that it was "pretty easy".
a cute, fun, child friendly workbook

This is a really cute workbook, filled with sweet illustrations and a diverse selection of excersises. The book starts with a section on "who am I" and continues with math excersises, easy science projects, geography quizes and language arts questionaires sprinkled randomly throughout the book. One of my favorite things about "Summer Smarts" is the reading selection. There are three main books to read through the summer with questions for your child to answer located at the back of the workbook. Other cute books are recomended throughout the workbook.
Having giving the book a glowing review I cannot say that my daughter agrees with me. She really dislikes worksheets in general and getting her to sit and do the excersises in this book has been next to impossible. The recomended reading is wonderful for reading to her, but they are far too difficult for her to read by herself. I purchased this book because she has been struggling in school and I thought this would help her keep from falling further behind this summer. I still recommend the book though, especially if you have the kind of child who enjoys working independantly. Like one of the other reviewers I agree that this book would be best for a child who is already doing well in school and who enjoys this sort of thing.

This book is perfect for a smart child waiting for second grade. It provides a chance to review basic skills needed in second grade without being boring or tiring. Other books of the same kind tend either to be too easy or to have too many exercises. A child who has worked hard needs some rest! This book also suggests titles for summer reading, which is great because summer reading are the ones that teach a child how nice it is to stop and read a book, and it also provides worksheets for four books. I would recommend this book to any student whose grades are C or above. For those children who are behind schedule, however, I would propose "Summer Bridge Activities" because it provides many more exercises.

This book is impressive. The problems are both fun and logical, well seated in 1st grade skill levels yet challenging too as it offeres new information, and new ways to use old skills. My son likes the clean drawings very much. The book exposes some standard test format as well, gets kids familiar with their future assessment exams.
The book is well built, also, I think it will hold up well under daily 6 years old boy wear. The only thing I'd suggest is to add more word problems so kids associate math more with everyday life. To that end, we use Beestar math (a nice web site at http://www.beestar.org) to complement.
Overall this is a great book for home schoolers, or parents whose children need a little boost in their math skills from home.

This book would be great in a classroom setting but not so much for one on one at home. We had to skip or modify a few of the activities that required "class room participation" (such as counting the number of girls/boys in class) because I bought this book to practice with my son at home over the summer.
