I am currently studying for the NLN CNE certificaion exam. This book, Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty (Billings, Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty) was recommended as a resource and it has been very helpful in preparation for the exam. It is not only an excellent resource for the exam, but also an excellent resource for the novice nurse educator. For those of us in nursing education for a number of years, this book is excellent at refreshing us and providing new ideas and innovations in nursing. I hardily suggest this book to anyone in or seeking to begin educating nurses.

This book transformed the way we teach reasearch at our school. Our students can't wait to dig deeply into subjects and share what they've learned with others. We've truly become a community of learners and the tools and encouragement in this book helped to make that happen. I re-read it every year.

Nonfiction Matters by Stephanie Harvey is a great book that not only gives teachers great ideas on how to teach nonfiction writing, but also on how to learn along with the students by inquiring about real things in life anyone of them might have an interest in.
I recommend this book to any teacher who is willing to take the challenge and transform her / his classroom into what every classroom in the world should be. Teachers will find new incentives to motivate their students along with simple economic ideas that will get their students writing passionate, interesting nonfiction papers everyone will want to read.

Every middle-grade teacher should own this book! It is such a relief to find a book by an author who clearly knows how to engage students in authentic, "real world" material. Not only is this book enjoyable to read, but it actually shows you how to jump in and make nonfiction reading work for your students--or your children--wherever they may be on the ability spectrum.
I think it can be difficult to teach things which we intuitively do well, and many teachers are good readers. This book is marvelous, because it refuses to advocate a painful, repetitive break-down of dull practice skills. Instead, it shows teachers and parents how to explicitly address skills within a meaningful context. That is so critical! For example, the book talks about readers making connections, and recognizing types of connections, including text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world. Making connections is not a new idea for reading teachers, but these categories are great for making non-fiction accessible.
The ideas and strategies in the book are motivating and inspiring, if overwhelming. The author's journey is really that of a continuing learner, and it was so valuable to me to read about her overflowing ideas and philosophies and strategies, as well as the way she handled roadblocks with colleagues and students.
I love that this author has the courage to present teaching as a "messy" art and science. It doesn't pretend there is one right answer or one right method or one right kind of student or teacher. It recognizes the complexity of so many variables coming together--ability, interest, personality--and acknowledges and addresses these variables, instead of pretending they don't exist.
This is a book for thinking, reflective teachers, and it's good.

I just had this book assigned to me for my upcoming course in Materials for Teaching Reading. The semester hasn't even started yet, and I have devoured this book. Stephanie Harvey has done an incredible job of breaking down the process of reading, writing, and researching nonfiction in such a way that I really feel prepared to go out and start teaching it. Not only am I prepared, I am EXCITED! I can't wait to implement what I have learned in my future classes, as well as in my own life journey of continued learning and research. Not only is there great information, the book is written in a very readable, interesting manner, a good example of good nonfiction writing.
*How* to write papers

When I was in school, we were told to write papers, but were never really taught *how* to develop one. We were told *what* to do -- make an outline, write the paper, and revise it -- but that didn't help me figure out *how* to do any of these things.
Now my daughter is in third grade and I'm trying to help her learn how to write. Our first use of the book helped us capture and explore what she learned on a museum trip. I was really impressed with the resulting report. It was focused, full of real content, and had a delightful narrative style. We even used wondering questions to help us focus further inquiry.
This book is a must-have for anyone interested in life-long learning.

I invested a lot of time learning Sarah's rules and techniques to successful application writing and let me tell you there are a few tricks to the trade that aren't as intuitive as one may think. The most valuable part of her `program', for lack of a better word, is helping come up with a cohesive application profile. It helps you choose essay topics that reflect this profile and ensure that you are presenting yourself fairly and adequately to the admission committee. Her book clearly identifies the traps that unsuccessful applicants fall into and helps you steer clear of the canned essays so many are unsuccessful with. I have recently been accepted to one of the top 3 business programs worldwide by following Sarah's methods. I highly Sarah's essay writing program.

This is a concise guide to creating syllabi that encourage students to engage in course content and take advantage of resources available to them. I have used suggestions from this book for several courses over the past six years. My students find that a syllabus based on suggestions in the book helps them organize their approach to the course and establish goals for learning. Administrative critiques of my syllabi routinely note clarity of purpose and thoroughness--important aspects for the age of learner-centered paradigms. Examples in the book cover a range of disciplines and course formats.

This book has some great games for reinforcing previously taught skills. My aide was able to easily assemble them and have plenty of materials to use with the kids. Now I know she always has something appropriate to engage the kids if they finish assignments early. I feel good knowing that the kids are doing something they see as a fun reward, but they are not spending their time idly.

I truly believe that this survival guide is a lifesaver for English teachers and students. I also like how an educator can make copies of vital information, lessons, activities, etc from the manual.

I purchased this book expecting oodles of great ideas...One great thing is the way that it organizes themes with each unit broken down into days and learning centers. However, the actual ideas are pretty general and although some are interesting, I have definitely found better ones- some of them don't even seem to correlate with the theme they are listed under...
I did get some good ideas, but would suggest 2 much better options for the money that provide more themed ideas with details rather than just general activities. Try: "The Complete Daily Curriculum" by: Pam Schiller and Pat Phipps AND "Creative Resources for the Early Childhood Classroom" by: Judy Herr

I also bought the Daily Curriculum book co-authored also by Pam Schiller, who helped write this one. They have a lot of similar things, but enough different that I kept them both. There is lots of ideas in the book for kids with varying interests and it's made planning educational stuff a lot easier for me.

I was disappointed with this book, if I had flipped through it before buying I don't think I would have bought it. I was expecting step by step instructions for activities but rather it seems very general. I think a lot of the ideas seem obvious. The GOOD thing is that it is grouped and organized for you. I admit that I need to spend some more time with the book and give it another chance, maybe I'll change my mind. But the two books that I can't live without, in my preschool class (3 year olds), are R IS FOR RAINBOW (Anselmo Rollins and Schuckman) and YEAR ROUND ACTIVITIES FOR THREE YEAR OLD CHILDREN (Anthony Coletta and Kathleen Coletta).
I don't think this is an awful book, but I was disappointed, that's all.

As a nurse in Dallas TX, you HAVE to know some spanish, as anywhere from 1-3 of your patients each day is spanish-speaking only. I had the misfortune of growing up in Tennessee (I got to TX as soon as I could =-), so I chose to learn French earlier which hasn't helped me so far in communicating to a single patient. Anyway, this little guy fits in your pocket but is a bit tall. It's got almost all of the essentials like body parts, common diseases, numbers, tells you how to say I've called a translator...etc. But I've found that the middle two pages don't help very much to a floor nurse- they're just kinda random questions and statements. I love how it's plastic though and you can just wipe it off with alcohol or whatever so you won't spread cooties. Pretty good bang for the buck.

After my child did poorly in Beestar online assessment tests, I purchased this book for him to learn and practice grammar. I looked many grammar books. This is by far the best for elementary kids. Unlike the big tomes that contain too much complex stuff, this book only deals with the core language knowledge that a fifth grader needs to know. It covers all elementary language rules and provides specific drills for each topic. By following the lessons, kids not only understand grammar rules, but also know exactly how to apply them in various language contexts. The book is well organized and the drills are thoughtfully designed. My child's grammar skills improved significantly studying the lessons. He now often gets on the Beestar honor roll in language tests. If you need a book to enforce skills or give a fifth grader an overview of grammar, this is a fine book to start with.

I homeschool my son who is in the 5th grade, and I started in October. Compared to the work he was doing in public school he's done much better work at home. With this book, his grammar greatly improved. I only gave it 4 stars because he completed it in two months. I expected it to last a complete school year, but maybe it was because he was able to concentrate better at home and he was able to understand the book better. Each page he was able to complete at 100% accuracy, where he was having quite a bit of trouble in public school. I highly recommend this book for any homeschooler, or any parent who would like to substitute or have extra help for their child that needs help with Grammar, it is easy to follow and understand. The answers are in the back of the book, so any of us parents who have forgotten some of our grammar like pronouns, and adverbs, or other things like that, don't have to worry about corrections, they are all there. It's a good book.

I bought this book to use a supplementation to my son's homeschool language arts program. Although a great reader, some grammar rules can trip him up in writing so I thought this would be a good book to try. I chose this workbook in particular b/c of the trusted Scholastic name and the price is very good for the content provided. If you need a book to reinforce skills or give a fifth grader a basic overview of grammar this would be a good place to start.

This is a great book for additional grammar practice for homeschoolers. I chose it to go along with some other books, such as "Checking Your Grammar" by Marvin Terban, for a complete Grammar Curriculum. It's not very lengthy, so you will need some additional material for teaching grammar, but it's a fantastic way to test your child.
