I would have to say that most text books are written as though the teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off is reading them, boring and mundane, but this book is written as though someone is talking to you. He goes off with some relevant side tangents to help you better understand the concepts. I appreciated this book for the topics covered and the manner in which they were addressed.

It's a text book. It gives you the basics for your class and you have to purchase it anyway. I've had better bio books, but I've also had worse, way worse. It's not too short. I think it's alright.

The author of this text book repeatedly falls into prose trying to make the subject matter more entertaining. Unfortunately, I found this rather distracting considering it is a text book. I was also shocked to find incorrect information in this 2004 reviewed text book, e.g. it claims that a Herpes Virus is the causative agent of cervical cancer, which is plain out wrong (it is HPV). Lucky me, I already have a degree in the medical field and know this kind of information, but I feel sorry for students who use this as primary source for their education. I was also disappointed that this text book has no contact information listed for improvement suggestions. Every good text book I purchased so far had either e-mail or regular mail contact information where one could address concerns to - this one does not. I sent the publishing company a letter about the faulty content, but have not heard back from them.
Anatomy and Physiology "paperback" - this is actually the study guide!

Caution: there is not a paperback version of this textbook available!
The Amazon page for the Anatomy and Physiology text shows a link to a paperback version available for about $35 dollars, but it is not a paperback version of the textbook! Instead you'll receive the study guide - this is an error with Amazon's page for this book.
The study guide does appear to be a good one, with practice tests and review points to help prepare for exams. I'll probably keep it now that I have it, but I still had to fork out $100+ for the actual textbook!

This text reads rather like an expanded lecture. Language is precise where it needs to be: I don't see "arm" used where "upper extremity" is intended.
I believe the May 2 reviewer may be dealing with a much older edition or otherwise confused. The connection of HPV to cervical cancer is clearly indicated in this edition, and was present in the second edition as well. In the second edition herpesviruses were also mentioned as "having been implicated as a cause of cervical cancer", and that phrase has been dropped from the third edition. I think the phrasing was probably reasonable at the time the second edition was in preparation.
I would never go so far as to say any text is error-free. However, when I think I've found mistakes in here it's more likely to turn out that the folks at Terminologica Anatomica have changed something underneath me - like moving the macula densa from the distal convoluted tubule to the ascending limb of the loop of Henle.

To everyone who is whining that this book is not geared for younger children: IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE FOR YOUNGER KIDS! Ms. Bauer clearly spells out her philosophy that history should be taught in the order that events occur. This book offers lots of literature suggestions for the slightly older student as well as the opportunity to begin practicing outlining as a study technique. As with all the previous activity guides this includes guided response questions for comprehension assessment. For those who want a "unit studies" approach that they can use for multiple grade levels at once, please look elswewhere. This subject matter does not work well with that approach.
Just what we were looking for!

This activity book looks to be exactly right for my son who will be in fourth grade and nine -years-old. He is excited about switching from summaries to the outlines and we all love the maps. You just can't have too many maps in a book, at least in this house you can't.
I can see that if you have not been following the Well Trained Mind suggestions in having your child write detailed 6-10 sentence summaries, then the writing might be overwhelming, but I think it is the perfect next step for those of us who have. Compared to the suggested summaries for the third volume of the series, I was pleased that the emphasis for Volume Four seems to be on organization of writing rather than volume.

I didn't think I'd be as happy with this book as I was with Vols. 2&3, but even though the reading lists aren't as extensive, I'm thrilled with the timeline cards & PRONUNCIATION GUIDE! If they were in the other volumes, I missed them. It's such a great idea to have the pronunciation guide when you read aloud! My DD9 will learn how to relate historical events so much better using the timeline cards as well. Can't WAIT to get going!

OK the students are older so they need a little more writing, but that is all this work book is! Boring. I can make outlines to be written from, which is what you get in this hefty book... and maps- lots of maps. The creative factor is what I want in the work book; it's what I pay for and it isn't there in this one.
It is the fourth in Bauer's history series and I think she ran out of steam. It's too bad; her earlier work books are creative. My kids with the previous work books said, "Yay! History!" Now they say, "Is it another outline?" You could save the money and just make your students outline the entire history book.

This book has been very helpful in planning a history curriculum. Other reviewers are correct the ditto portion you can copy is mainly maps. It is also a bit weaker than the other books in this group. However, despite those two complaints, this is a very useful book when planning curriculum for a homeschool student. There are discussion topics, craft ideas and more.

A Flawed, But Useful Instrument

I underwent ECERS-R evaluation using this same instrument when I worked in a poor, predominantly Black elementary school. I have concluded that this instrument, though thorough and insightful, somewhat downwardly grades poverty-stricken classrooms by pointing out what they don't have (and often can't get due to financial constraints). On the other hand, it rewards more affluent school districts due to their ability to supply more materials, resources, and equipment.
Even though I find it easy to follow, it allows way too much subjectivity for the assessing agent. How you rate my DISCIPLINE and STAFF-CHILD INTERACTIONS would depend on your experiences as a teacher in a certain cultural context. An assessor who mastered his classroom managing skills under the guise of a school district in a community devoted to authoritative discpline may misinterpret the cues in an authoritarian-dominated classroom as "inappropriate". In reality, appropriateness and inappropriateness depend on one's cultural context even with buttressing empircal research. For some people, authoritative classroom management allows children to "run wild", "control the classroom", and "do what they want to do too much".
To ensure the proper use of the instrument, administrators should:
1. Ensure that his teachers possess a copy of the ALL ABOUT THE ECERS-R companion book which details step-by-step how to put together an ECERS-R classroom.
2. BEFORE the official assessment, direct teachers to do an ACCURATE, well-guided, appropriately-paced self-study of their classroom.
3. BEFORE the official assessment, support the teacher's suggestions and requests to pull their classrooms up to ECERS-R standards.
4. BEFORE the official assessment, stay mindful of the things that a teacher can control and which things the principal can only control.
5. AFTER the official assessment, support the teacher's need to fix deficiencies.
6. AFTER the official assessment, make a concerted effort to fix the deficiencies that stand out of the teacher's hands.
In the end, all early childhood professionals should realize that a developmentally appropriate classroom doesn't begin and end with the ECERS-R despite its well-earned reputation.
Please use proper, realistic discernment.

Jacobs presents a very simple, common sense approach to organizing and assessing curricula. Her curriculum mapping technique helps teachers to become better organized and it helps administrators evaluate curricula. In an age of standards and accountability, curriculum mapping also makes it easier to to incorporate standards into the curriculum. I would recommend this book to all educators involved in lesson planning and/or curriculum development.

I recommend this book to any school administrator or team leader. It will only take an hour to read, but will pay dividends for years to come!

Having now taken my Praxis II exam, I have to say that this book prepared me for the multiple choice mostly. The practice case studies in the book are too easy. The scenarios they give are farily basic and the questions are straight forward. On the actual test, things were a little more in depth. I liked the book, but I just fet like it had me a little over confident. Use this book, but check out some other materials too.

I have not taken any college level education courses in over 20 years, so the information in this guide was crucial for me in reviewing current issues and "buzz" words in education today. Once again, Prentice Hall displays why it remains a superforce in creating textbooks: its balanced and accessible research-based comprehensiveness. As with my first Chemistry book in high school, I believe this book possesses everything you will need to know about early childhood curriculum.
The former champion, in my opinion,--Evelyn Peterson's A PRACTICAL GUIDE OT EARLY CHILDHOOD CURRICULUM--gets bested here because this text presents, in a well-understood way, what Peterson's book also did well: present pratical explanations. This texts gets the slight edge because the authors ably worked in all the research and citations relevant to the concepts without overloading a teacher's mind with scholarship. It's a difficult feat that I have only seen one other time in an ECE text (J.A. Brewer's INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION).
Here's where you really get a smashing deal: this book will give you all you need to grasp the curriculum topics on the PRAXIS II: Education of the Young Child test.
The New Champion of Early Childhood Curriculum college textbooks. Take a bow and a victory lap.

I found this to be a great book for anyone who needs to know anything about the relationship between drugs and the person using the drugs. I have also read Dr. Fisher's newest book Rethinking our War on Drugs (Candid Talk about controversial issues) I found that book even better then this book. I would say anyone should read both books. I had the chance to meet Dr. Fisher and I had him sign my copy of both this book and the War on Drugs.

This book clearly explains the relationship an addict has with their drug of choice, so that someone who may never have used/abused can understand the seemingly irrational behavior of the addict. But, the author does not stop there. Harrison goes on to explain various reasons why the addict's family may knowingly or unknowingly support the addict's habit, thus keeping the addict from recovery.
