This book changed my whole approach in teaching. If you are serious about your audience actually learning from what you teach, this is the book to read. I will be using this book as my primary resource for teaching a class to Sunday School teachers on "Teaching to Change Lives" at my church this winter. Read and then do!

Dr. Hendricks is a master at taking a rather serious subject and making his book about it irresistible. From beginning to end, his wit and insight to the student made this book an easy read about a very challenging undertaking. I appreciated over and over again his reminiscent writing about when he was a boy and his perspective of teachers and likewise his students and how he interacted with them. This book is now invaluable to me as a teacher. Wish I had known about it sooner. It is worth the effort to discern a person's "learning curve" and engage them accordingly. It's worth the challenge, especially if you're teaching them about the Lord. Thank you, Dr. Hendricks.

I used this book as a training tool for Sunday School teachers in a small church. We found it to be excellent material. It is to the point and doesn't pull any punches about the fact the teaching is a committment. Should be required reading for everyone who wants to teach.

While Hendricks knows what it takes to teach effectively, I was disappointed with this book. If you are looking for a book to learn how to effectively communicate well with students, this book will be helpful. If you already have good communication skills and common sense in how to connect with students, you'll find this book to be mostly review without any exciting new insights. Please don't let this discredit Dr. Hendricks' other books. Make sure to purchase a copy of Living By the Book by Howard and William Hendricks.

This is a classic. Thought provoking and provides many tools that are essential to know when you work with students in high school. I would say that it is one of the best books on discipline and classroom management and worth every penny that you might spend. I would recommend buying this book and it should cover most of your needs for classroom management in high school.

This book is a well laid out, practical approach to improving your classroom management abilities. It goes through most or all of the thoughs and proceedures that should go into a management plan and gives ideas for implementing them.
If you like your ideas laid out in sequential order then this book is perfect for you. Everything is step-by-step and each chapter leads into the next. At the end of every chapter the main proceedures that were talked about are given again along with a checklist and a box for writing in your personal ideas.

I have used Sprick's materials for years. His material covers what matters to teachers--structure and how to create relationships with kids. His book CHAMPs, the Elementary Version is a very practical book--particularly when used with Encyclopedia of Behavior Problems--100 Problems, 500 solutions...You should consider this if you are a new teacher or if you are having problems with structure in your classes. Sprick is approachable and helpful in his style. Secondary teachers will find the content of this new book more related to them.

I have used extensive grammar and language texts with schoolchildren. And they would hate it! Now I use this book
and it is rather quick, efficient, and to the point.
The children enjoy their sessions as they learn.
You can have them practice handwriting as well as grammar and punctuation. It is really great.

With educational and testing standards getting more and more difficult, it is nice having a tool to provide students with practice with language arts skills. These Daily Language Practice sheets give 1st graders a daily dose of basic editing (adding capitals, basic spelling errors, punctuation). They also include a variety of other activities including sorting words, yes/no questions, rhyming words, and other fundamentals. The Friday sheet always has a different and more lighthearted activity. There is also a Daily Math Practice book and I xerox them back to back and use them as bellwork. Both are half-sheets which are completed in about 10 minutes. Highly recommended!

This book had everything I was looking for & more for my four year old. There are So many projects for different levels, with simple instructions. I was delighted to see some projects that I did long ago when I was a child, like paper dolls holding hands, paper snow flakes & sock puppets. The list goes on & on... :)

I have a three-year old daughter with whom I wanted to explore arts and crafts. I looked at many different arts and crafts books before choosing this one to buy. Many other books that I looked at had projects that had complicated instructions or used materials that were expensive. I needed a book that I could pull off the bookshelf, open up, and pick a suitable art project quickly. Little Hands has realistic projects- by that, I mean projects that are meaningful, uncomplicated, and use basic materials that you're likely to have around the house.

My 5 year daughter and I have been having heaps of fun creating the art in this book. While my 2 year old son has an afternoon sleep we can complete one of these activities. The materials are mostly household items and the rest are easy to come by. It's very well presented with easy to follow steps. It's got all the old "classics" - paper dolls, papier-mache, spoon puppets and the egg carton caterpillar. A much better way to fill in an afternoon than her watching a movie while I clean the house!
I haven't seen it for sale in Australia and am very glad to get it from Amazon.

As a first year law student with no idea what to expect, this book was extremely helpful. I purchased it the summer before my first semester, and imagine how excited I was when my legal writing teacher recommended this book over all law school aides. This book explains a great deal about law school, including what to expect in general, how to write briefs, and effective outlining methods. I would highly recommend this purchase!

This was an excellent book; I am still working on my undergraduate degree planning on attending law school. I know people who are attorneys and I have received there feedback but this book was so much more in depth and precise. I am doing a lot of research on what to expect during law school and how to get into a high tier institution. This book tells it all from admissions to class selection to internships. Law school confidential is a must read if you are planning towards law school.

I just finished my first year at a top ten law school. I didn't read this book or The Law School Companion in full before school started, but I read through parts of it during the year and over winter break. Overall it does help with giving you hints if you are utterly clueless on what to expect, but it is very outdated and there are far more useful books out there. One that I prefer is called Introduction to the Study and Practice of Law in a Nutshell (based off the Nutshell series which is very helpful and used by practicing lawyers). I would recommend Law School Companion but I think that book will tend to scare you too much and be counter-productive. I wish I had gone into law school having read the nutshell book, but the truth is that you will figure everything out once you are there and there is no reason to read a pre-law book unless you are in really in a panic. If you do choose to buy this book BUY IT USED. I had a copy I put into recycling because the used copies are selling for so little.

Deaver's book is a good, light read. The main, primary focus of the book is to: (1) introduce you to an outlining system to prepare for your exams (and to help you study for them) and (2) to give you a brief, but reasonably thorough review of your entire law school experience, from the pros and cons of law review to how to write a good scholarly paper. Note the short page length--only about 200 pages. Thus, the book doesn't cover *everything* about law school, but it is a very good start. In addition to law school itself, it has some good overviews and tips about job prospects, the legal profession, summer opportunities, etc. It also has a brief overview of the LSAT and application process, although these areas are really not that informative to be worthy of publication (the main point of the book is, as I said, the outlining system and a rough overview of the law school experience itself--which this book does very well). It is written in an easy, casual manner and the author can be funny at times, too. All in all, a good, light, easy read about how to best study for law school classes.
Excellent if you're not sure if law school is what you want.

My ten year career has been in software development management. I have aspirations for business management as well as politics. So I thought perhaps a J.D. would help me further those goals. This book helped inform me exactly what to expect in law school, the tests, the application process, etc. It gives some ideas of what one can do with the degree, etc. It's a nice short book that you can read in one sitting. It was nice to be able to do that and figure out whether or not I really wanted to invest 3 years in law school.

I have recommended that the students in my class keep this textbook for future use. It is chock full of strategies, research to back up those strategies, book lists and classroom examples. The author gives step by step instruction on how to set up the four classroom strategies for teaching the language arts. This information is invaluable and even the most inexperienced teacher could use the book to set up a viable language arts classroom. The DVD that comes with the book allows us to see inside the classrooms of "exemplary" teachers and watch how the strategies work in the real world. Well worth the money.

Finally, I was required to a buy a book that I will actually use again. Both pre-student and veteren teachers will enjoy this book. It contains a wealth of strategies for teaching kids how to write. Although there is a a lot of great information however, if your like me you don't have tons of time for reading through all the historical and case study information. Each section is clearly explained so it's great to just pick and choose what you are looking for.
