Nurse as Educator: Principles of teaching and learning for nursing practice 2nd ed. by Susan B. Bastable
Fifteen chapters are divided into three parts: 1. perspectives on teaching and learning, 2. characteristics of the learner, and 3. techniques and strategies for teaching and learning. The book deals with theory and application. The second edition has an increased emphasis on the teacher as facilitator, shift from teaching the ill to promotion of health and prevention of disease. A chapter about technology has been added. Each chapter starts with chapter highlights, key terms, and objectives and ends with a summary, review questions, and references. Major divisions in chapters and tables are colored. Bullets and numbers facilitate reading. There is a glossary at the back of the book. This is a scholarly 571 page book An Instructor's Manual that contains multiple choice and essay questions, learning activities, and instructional materials including PowerPoint slides for each chapter is available with this edition. This book is appropriate for students and registered nurses who do patient teaching and faculty.

I got this book as part of my MSN program. I still refer to it frequently because it is a fantastic reference. It's easy to navigate, and it's easy to read. The advice in the book always seems so timely as well.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in teaching other nurses or in other similiar settings. I would also highly recommend it for the new Clinical Nurse Educator or Staff Development Specialist for its comprehensive discussion of the topics. It can certainly provide the basic knowledge one needs to know in order to do this job.

I used this as a guide to prepare for the Praxis Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment test. It has a chapter called "Study Topics" which outlines what will be on the test. I went through the chapter and researched and studied each item thoroughly. I also read the other chapters which give advise on test taking. It has a practice test which was also helpful. Studying and preparing for the test took a long time and lots of work but it was worth it. I felt very prepared for the test and passed it on the first try.

Necessary, but not overly helpful

I believe this book is necessary for anyone preparing for the Praxis, but it isn't overly helpful. Minimal explanations for the answers are given, but it does give an idea of the format of the test and the type of questions included.

This book is full of wonderful lesson plans as well as ideas to create compelling lessons yourself. My students have found much sucess with Ken Vieth's projects. His motivation is wonderful and really simplfies the process for delivering the lessons. He has a keen insight into the secondary student's mind and how to create an interest in extraordinary artwork.

My son is going into 3rd grade. This summer he's been working on math, grammar/writing. This is his favorite non-math workbook. The directions are clear and instructive - he doesn't need me to help him understand what he needs to do. The sentence expanding and paragraph building exercises aren't as exhausting for him as those in other writing workbooks.

Review Date: 2007-09-27
This book is written with passion. Its story is told not through the author, but through the anecdotes, vignettes, and interviews provided by his students. A reader can tell what an inspired and inspiring teacher Mr. Michie really is. I would recommend this book to any new teachers or anyone interested in the problems of social justice and education in the US.

Holler for Michie

Review Date: 2006-05-11
Gregory Michie's series of vignettes weaves an interesting story of his life as a young, inexperienced teacher in a poor and violent public school system. Although the book's time line is scattered, the reader can easily get a feel for the struggles of both Michie and his students. Set in the 1990's in the "Back of the Yard" Mexican-American neighborhood in inner city Chicago, we are introduced briefly, yet intensely, to many of Michie's students who struggle to stay in school. The pages fly by because they are rich with dialogue and stories from Michie's colorful students. If you was looking for an insightful book with a passionate look into the mind of some diversely opinionated adolescents, this is a great book for you.
As a teacher, I found Michie's book inspiring. Although the time line, at points, is difficult to follow, I sincerely enjoyed the honest approach of the book. As a result of reading this text, I decided to spend more one on one time with some of my students. Michie, with the help if a reverend-like teacher, starts to look past the "gangster" in order to find the student inside. I thought that maybe I had been judging some of my most challenging students too quickly. Have I been subconsciously treating the students who I know to be involved in more trouble differently? Have I been ignoring kids because I think that "they don't care anyway"? I tried to put my feeling aside and at least talk to some of the students whom I found troublesome. Every day last week, I invited a new kid to eat lunch with me. Even if I could not be the extra-curricular, field trip-loving Michie, I could at least try something! With a few, I found immediate results. It seemed to me, that their classroom antics were a cry for my attention, and an individual conference was the perfect medicine. One child in particular, asked to have lunch with me again, and I complied. When he began misbehaving in class later on that afternoon, all it took was a sideways glance of disappointment, and he was back on track. This small simple strategy may seem obvious to many (and it was to me, I just never did it!), but it really worked. I do not think that I would have made an effort to spend quality time with my "problem" children if I had not read this book.

Holla' back!

Greg Mitchie gives a very personal account about the compassion and hard work involved in teaching. There is a great balance between teacher and student reflections on school, in particular middle school, and life. It is a thoughtful and emotional insight into what being a teacher should be about - promoting student voice. Great read for anyone insterested in teaching at the secondary level, at the beginning of their teaching career or in an inner city.

Review Date: 2007-11-07
This book is life-changing. It is my 8 year old daughters favorite part of the school day, but I am learning as much, if not more, than she is from it. I am learning that the world is much larger than my city, my state, the US and even North America! There is a lot going on out there that I have been horribly blind to until now. This book is opening my eyes to the knowledge that EVERY person is a child of God and He loves and cares about each one. This book is causing me to have a new perspective of thankfulness about how fortunate my family is and daily I am reminded to be thankful for our health, our safety, our comfort and material provision, our food, clean water, all things I have taken for granted until now. We are very spoiled in this country and I think this book is an awesome tool for adults and children to foster a new way of thinking!

Kids are learning, some criticism

Review Date: 2007-10-07
My kids are learning about geography through this book, which we read from about 3 time a week. We learn something about the people and the terrain and about Christian missionary efforts world wide. They may not see or read glimpses of specific types of people without this book and I am pretty happy about that. I think the personal stories sound artificial and they are too short to really care much for the character of each singular blurb. Also they mention a movie called "The Jesus Movie" I don't get the emphasis on the showing of that movie. It almost sounds like marketing for the movie and I guess it's going to work because I want to see what it is they are talking about. Great for other home school families that want some geography and anthropological exposure.

NOT a new edition!!

Though it says 2007, it's not a revised edition but has exactly the same information as the hardcover version I bought in 2002; no updates on major world events/changes, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. An excellent spiritual resource, as well as useful in teaching geography and cultures.

A great daily keep up workbook. It breaks down one year's math into small pieces and allow your child to do a little a day without worrying about missing anything. The standard test format makes your kid comfortable with the future real tests. Well organized good book.

To get ahead in math, my child does more than what this book offers. As a complement, if you have Internet at home, you should check out an incredible Houston community web site http://www.beestar.org. It provides quality free math exercises online every week. I signed up my daughter a year ago and we love it.

Once again Jossey-Bass did it with this reader. From the opening stanza relating universal leadership to the particulars of the industry of education, to what the future of educational leadership may hold, this collection of essays, insights and overviews takes either the graduate student or the neophyte dabbler on a roundhouse roundup of every imaginable facet of the issues facing societal gestational institutions.

This is a required text for a class I'm taking. It's a waste of money. What's sound (the basics on skinner, piaget, etc ad nauseum) is already in every other education textbook and the technology segments are dated, frequently wrong, and assume you are mentally retarded.

Does anyone really need to be told what a keyboard is? For 2 pages? Book also has a profound Microsoft bias and seems to openly deny that anything else exists.

Avoid, if possible.

Useless, outdated, and idiotic

Review Date: 2007-03-04
I had to read this book for a Technology and Education class, and it was a total waste of time and money. I'm a professional computer consultant in the middle of a Masters in Education, so I feel qualified to discuss the technical aspects of this book.

While this book was Copyrighted in 2005, almost all the pictures and content are so dated I think that little has changed since the first edition. A Third edition has just been released, which may be more up to date, but I feel it will be just as useless.

The main problem with this book is that it covers everything with no regard to technical ability. For instance, the book informs the reader what a scanner is, and then says they can be usefull for converting a printed page to editable text on the computer. If you are learning what a scanner is for the firs time today, then you AREN'T ready to start using OCR to import documents. In other places, it says floppy disks (yes, the 3.5 disks) are useful for storing information (most computers don't even accept floppy disks).

Additionally, the book is entirely pro-microsoft. It briefly touches upon 'free' software as it distinguishes between shareware and freeware, but doesn't mention Free/Libre Open Source Software. Between Sakai, Open Office, Firefox, and the myriad of other programs, this is inconceivable. All the pictures are for Word, Outlook, and Internet Explorer. It also makes no mention of Apple Computers (at least I didn't find any) or GNU Linux/*BSD.

Finally, it is filled with cute buzzwords that mean nothing, at least to me, such as "The DID's formative feedback look ensures performance objective validity." which appeared on the sidebar with a lightbulb.

Basically, if you don't know anything about technology, this book will be of no use, as much of it will gloss over what you need to learn, and if you are already a competent computer user, this book will be dated and provide scattered information that might have been helpful 5 years ago.

I would recomend not buying this book. If you are a teacher and want to see how technology can be used in your classroom (without learning useless information like what a POST is) I'd try Will Richardson's Blogs, Wikis and Podcasts. That was useful and interesting, while not being too technical.
