Seems like a great book that students or children can write in and learn to understand the level of individual emotions. My order was messed up so I am not happy about that.

Great idea for helping understand both feelings and reactions.

Great for using at home with kids up to elementary school. I gave it as a gift and it was extremely useful. Gives examples of what might be causing the feelings. Gives a standard language for both parents and children to be clear about which feeling is being discussed. The definitions of big, medium and small feelings with discussion of how to keep reactions at a similar level has been a lifesaver for us.

As a first year teacher, I have made it my obligation to get my hands on as many resources as possible to learn my "craft." I am amazed at how much this book has changed my concept of teaching writing. I now understand what it is to "describe" a good piece of work rather than "prescribe" a good piece of work.

When I received this book after having attended a workshop, I did not know what to do with it-how to read it, understand it, but after having a year of experience and assessing my weaknesses (how to teach writing), I now understand.

I thank Katie Wood Ray for sharing herself and her findings with us.

If you want to teach writing to children, read this book!

I've taught for 21 years, but I always felt like there must be a better way to teach writing to children. This book tells how. Katie Wood Ray gives specific techniques for teaching structure, ways with words, and teaches you to teach your students to read like writers. For all of this, she uses the most marvelous children's books, most picture books but some young adult novels. I have worked on increasing my library under her direction, and I'm having a ball watching my students learn to love to write.

Should be in every reading teacher's professional library

Katie Wood Ray has made a very readable, very usable book to help teachers teach students to 'read like writers'. I use the ideas when I am reading and reviewing new children's literature and each time I begin writing instruction with my elementary remedial students. Truly shows how to integrate student writing and good children's literature.

A wonderful read as well as a wonderful resource!

I have enjoyed everyword of this book. I am an aspiring English teacher who is fortunate enough to have Katie Ray's guidance as a professor and mentor. This book is one of the few that I will not sell back. This unique way of teaching writing writing is creative, relaxing, and enjoyable for both the teacher and the student. No matter what grade you teach you need this book! Katie has an amazing gift as a teacher and a writer which she expresses wonderfully in this book.

THE BEST EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE OUT THERE!

As a writer of children's books and a second grade teacher, I refer to this book often - for support, guidance, affirmation, ideas, writing help, and more. It is perfect!

I hope to have the opportunity to cross paths with the author one day...I'd love to see her speak!

I recommend it all the time to teaching colleagues, friends, writers, and editors.

If you are an English Second Language student from a Latin country, you need this. No matter your learning rate, this will greatly improve your vocabulary. It won't help your accent, but there are great choices on CDs for that purpose. This is a way to build your word store fairly painlessly.
Highly reccomended

This textbook was required for completing prerequisites to obtain my Early childhood degree. But it was one helluva good book. The chapters were short so it was never overwhelming to read. At the end of each chapter were lesson plans and therein lies the gold at the end of this rainbow. This book is a treasure trove of easy lessons to implement in a preschool early childhood classroom. This is not just a fabulous textbook it is an amazing classroom and center resource.

I was required to buy this book for my class. It is utterly boring. If I had trouble going to sleep, I just read this book. Some of the information is outdated (e.g. how the chicken pox vaccine should be given), as it's copyright is 2005, and the subject matter it contains on the health, safety and nutrition of the young child is constantly changing. The publisher needs to create a 7th edition and use different authors.

Boys Will Be Boys

Having trouble with boys who don't much want to write? Don't get their humor? Don't understand their interests? Wondering how you can get more work out of them, perhaps?

Teachers with questions like these would do well to read a book like BOY WRITERS. Ralph Fletcher examines genres that boys like (humor, non-fiction, parody, for instance) and genres they don't (personal narrative and other pieces requiring reflection, for instance). Fletcher also provides tips on what to do should the boys push the envelope a bit in their writing (and they will).

If you feel that there's not much difference between the boys' and the girls' work in your class, then you may not need to read this unless you're interested in gender research as it applies to education. If, on the other hand, you are often baffled by the XY chromosomed ones, by all means buy this book. It may not only be an eye opener, it may be a possibility opener for the boys in your classroom. They'll thank you for it (well, not to your face, but you get the idea...).

A must-read and I don't say that lightly.

Why 5 Stars for Boy Writers?

- Ralph Fletcher saw the urgency to address the unique needs of boys
- The book fulfills its mission to help parents and educators better understand the unique circumstances that apply to many boys.
- The chapters are SHORT and TARGET specific issues, supported by real-life writing samples, and conclude with a "What Can I Do In My Classroom?" quick-to-implement suggestions.
- Writing samples with comments from the author tap into a fountain of ideas.
- Fletchers qualifications (experience, expertise) are impressive, he is PERCEPTIVE and draws on a rich history working with young writers.
- This book leaves you with greater compassion for your son/student's writing struggles. The appearance of laziness/boredom does not equate to indifference with respect to being heard.
- Humorous anecdotes make the total package an enjoyable read!

While 'Boy Writers' does NOT provide all the answers to my questions in how to motivate my son to write (can anyone?), it certainly illuminates the path to guiding the budding writer - with wisdom and compassion - to make his voice heard.

I'm planning to order 5 more copies to give away to friends and teachers!

I would also suggest reading "Why Gender Matters" by Leonard Sax to review some of the research (most with a sound scientific basis) and solutions on how to develop a greater appreciation/understanding for the strengths as well as the developmental challenges of both genders.

This is a great read for busy parents. The book is easy to follow and answers lots of questions without rhetoric. It touches on key issues that gifted and talented children deal with, how they perceive themselves to be and how they are perceived by others. It explains how a child can be tested, what kinds of programs might be available and how we as parents can help our child get the best possible education. I'm reading this book as part of a Parents of Gifted and Talented Children Book Club. We meet every other week to discuss what we've read. It's perfect for initiating support topics and discussion.

This book deals quite extensively with how to help your child if the school he/she goes to offers no gifted program or a pull-out program.

I didn't really find that any of the issues I deal with in my school district (which has gifted classes) or with my son (who seems to have some attention issues specifically related to his giftedness) were answered.

It does list other resources... Maybe those will be helpful.

There are many books on the topic of gifted and talented children as it relates to their education and needs. However, I found this book addressed the gifted child from many different aspects. It touched upon their academic and social-emotional needs. It provides parents with great insight into these children in terms of how they think, characteristics that are common and the dangers of mis-diagnosing gifted children with disorders such as ADHD. It is easy to read straight through but is also set up in such a way that a particular section of interest can stand alone. I had purchased this book for my own use and then purchased 7 more to present to our local Board of Education. Our district did not have a program for gifted and talented children on the elementary level. With this book in conjunction with other research a small group of parents and myself presented an entire packet to our Board of Ed. to make a case for this much needed program. We were successful. The program was added to our district's curriculum for next year. This book helped greatly to help us navigate and advocate for our children. Much recommended.

My students enjoy these practice pages. I like that there is built in differentiation. As one progresses from the first activity to the fourth, they are also progressively challenged, so it's enough to hold my bright students, and easy enough that the lower students can do the activities (with a little guidance). I'm not sure that I would use these for students past the initial portion of second grade, unless they were performing below the standard in Reading, but all in all, this product is a good investment.

I have been teaching for awhile but this book is great for new and experienced teachers and excellent for college students studying courses in child development curriculum. It is broken down alphabetically by themes. Some examples include-seasons, holidays, ants, just to name a few. At the beginning of each theme there is a parent letter that explains what will be happening in your class. Then for all aspects of your students learning, the subject is broken down into different areas that support ways to implement the material- songs, fingerplays, math, science, language(supporting stories), art activities etc...
Overall, a great resource for early educators-especially if you run out of ideas!!!!!

This book was purchased as a classroom requirement for my daughter's community college course. As a teacher, I don't generally buy resource or idea books, but this is a good one for the beginner or someone who does not have the time to search for ideas. Although it is costly, its a better investment than numerous small books. I feel that the way that the author chose to organize it could have been better; so be sure to read through the entire book as ideas for what you're looking for may be hidden under other topic headings!

This is an amazingly well written text. Ms Ormrod actually practices what she preaches, so the book is organised as an exemplar of how to help students learn. I bought the book as an optional text for a Masters in Education, then I sat up one night to check it out. It became compulsive reading, very hard to put down. It gives a broad overview of Educational Psychology thinking over a wide period of time, and encapsulates it. It is full of useful references. Many of my colleagues have borrowed this book for various courses and for course development for educational projects.

In Search of Understanding is the most logical, and effective paradigm in education. It helped me clarify and understand my own thinking and also changed how I see the education process for my students. If you need iron-grip control of your classroom at all times, this book is not for you. If you are ready open your mind, your classroom, and your students to new possibilities, this is a step in the right direction.

Short and Sweet and to the Point

I first read the 1993 edition in 1993, and I was sold on it. There is no more clear nor concise book on constructivist instructional design in the business. The book is practical and can be read quickly. It doesn't get bogged down in too much jargon or theory. I object to one critic who claims the book is "ivory tower" and leans to much on science and math examples. The book is just the opposite from "ivory tower" and as for math and science examples, as a science teacher who spent years reading theory pitched toward humanities teachers that I had to adapt to my realm, I found this book refreshing. I would counter that creative, constructivist, dedicated teachers of English, World Languages, and Social Sciences would be able to adapt the Brookses's examples to their fields with ease.

Parallax View of the Classroom
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 37 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-16
The author's case for constructivism is predicated on unrealistic notions not only concerning the realities of education, but also the fundamentals of social diversity. The book seems to take the view that the more radical a notion is the more bookworthy it becomes. This concept is promoted by outlandish recommendations that clearly could not be practically implemented ... or even reasonable to consider. The author does not provide empirical evidence to support his opinion. The author seems to rely on a self-aggrandizing style to entrap other educators who may embrace his liberal ideas more as a defense against being labeled the traditionalist villian in this fictional work. Any educator who embraces this book has a parallax view of the classroom ... one that is upside down and inside out. In that case, the problem is not the classroom, but the teacher.

Excellent Text on Many Levels

Review Date: 2006-08-20
The authors in this text present a clear and organized overview of constructivist learning that is accessible to the beginner interested in the topic. The text is geared toward primary education, but I have been able to implement modified constructivist techniques presented in the text in my college courses. Constructivism is valuable for any learner.

I am disturbed at the negative comments regarding this book. I would not suggest that the book is above critisim, but the current retoric outlined in other reviews is without intellectual substance and is demeaning to many learners. As a student in primary and secondary education I struggled in with traditional educational methods. (I also see the same traditional methods being inflicted on my children.... education is slow if not impossible to change!) Not until I reached college and entered design and architectural education did I realize that different methods of instruction could be used effectively. For those who look down on constructivist methodology they are also disregarding the excellent educational practices in disciplines such as architecture, music, theater, design, art, and other forms of learning that require students to make judgments and create tangible proposals that impact the quality of society. Many would like you to think that constructivism is a radical and "new" educational method. But actually it has been part of our learning process in many disciplines long before the educational community formally recognized the theory.

Without dedicated professors that mostly unknowingly implemented constructivist methods in undergraduate and graduate education I would have never made my way though architectural school and become a design professor. I use this book in my design studio when I have my students create architectural proposals for schools of the future. It is interesting to hear the rhetoric of protecting traditional educational methods that I have had to un-teach on the college level. The most common comment I receive from my college students when they read this book is "Why did I not get learn this way?"

The authors are to be commended on creating a text that is accessible and usable to diverse disciplines.

Do you teach in a classroom in which there are no behavior problems. Where students sit at there desks with arms folded and smiles on their faces, eager to jump at the challenge you are about to put before them? No? This book assumes you do. Not only is this book an excersize in Utopia, it is very liberal by design. Several times, known communists are quoted and their ideas taken as gospel. Do you want our children being taught by a teacher following a socialist agenda? Do you want to teach your classroom in this manner? Then do not follow this book. The book is peppered with a few good ideas, but I have a problem with the message delivered. Comments such as "truth is often a matter of interpetation", and "grades are used to communicate that some students are smarter than others" are liberal ideas communicated throughout this book. If you want to improve your teaching by using research based instructional strategies, there are many pieces available that address this without being so radical.
