This was not all that I had wanted it to be. I have gotten way better books on teaching.

This is a must have for any teacher. I have been teaching for over 10 years and benefitted greatly from the information in this book. Every teacher has students that are described in this book. This book gives information on how to handle even the most difficult students. If you are a new teacher, I would also suggest The First Days Of School: How To Be An Effective TeacherI review both books every August.

First, I must admit that I have not yet read this book, since I only just now discovered it: I will remedy this immediately! I have, however, attended Dr. Jones' wonderful classroom management workshops, and I can't recall how many times I have related the opening exercise.

We, a group of anxious beginning teachers, were asked by the instructor to list all of the behaviors that our students demonstrated that drove us MAD! As we called out these iniquities, the instructor wrote them on the portable board in front of the room: "they talk when they should listen, they eat, drink and chew gum, they get up and walk around without permission, they don't pay attention, they always want to go to the bathroom, they answer without raising their hands, they play around with their friends, they show neither common courtesy, nor appropriate respect for authority...".etc.)

When we had finally begun to run out of crimes, the instructor, turned the board around and asked us to list behaviors we had observed during our last faculty meeting...

Natural human behavior is just that - whether it's observed in a seventh grader or a nearing retirement teacher. It's the context of learning to understand and work with human beings that makes Dr. Jones' methods so powerful. His workshops were the most valuable I ever attended as an educator, and I feel certain this book will also prove to be a gem. I am now an Assistant Principal, and I look forward to sharing his work with my teachers.

This book gets right to work on how to create a successful time-on-task classroom. Very logical and well thought out. Presents a well developed strategy. It does not jump around. Each sections answers some questions and raises others which are them taken up in detail.

Begins with Learning from 'Natural Teachers' who know how to manage and motivate. Teaches how the teacher can work smart and make the students work for speed and accuracy.

Jones answers the difficult "why should I" questions. Students ask, in effect, why should I care, behave, work, hurry, strive. Jones designs a multilayered answer to those questions including how to present material verbally, visually, and physically. How to 'work the crowd' and deal with the helpless and the disruptors. How to motivate. How to invest the time saved on dicipline to raise the quality of work. How to create positive incentives. Finally, how to deal with the most difficult situations.

This book is packed with specifics. Theoretically it applies to Kindergarten through High School. Some methods like preferred activity time would seem to apply more to earlier grades. The discussions of how to deal with disruptive students really speaks to the challenges of teaching high school.

This book is highly prescriptive. This is Fred's approach. You may not decide to handle everything the way he recommends, but you will certainly know his approach in great detail. Highly recommended.

Dr. Jones' Book is well-written and does contain some good advice, but he over-explains simple concepts. While reading his book I found myself alternating between three emotions (after twelve years of public school teaching): (1) "Wow this is great," (2) "O'K, you've made your point, now move on," and (3) "I totally disagree with that philosophy."

Harry Wong's book is much more practical and covers the whole picture of excellent teaching - management and instruction. While certainly not bad to have on your shelf, if your money is tight, skip this purchase.

I didn't expect for this book to arrive as quickly as it did! It came in just a few days. (With standard shipping) I was very pleased!

Very good reference. Recommended by ABCTE, an alternative route to teaching in USA. ABCTE is a very rigorous program.

Data Wise contains examples and graphs. The book explains how grades can be plotted on a graph, individual and group, to achieve the learning goal. With the use of the graph, teaching methods can be modified in order to meet the required learning goal. Achievement of students can be clearly seen on the graph whether they are doing well or not. Teachers are aided in planning lessons more effectively.

Data Wise is exactly as the title describes. It tells you exactly how to implement data use in your school with case studies/examples. Great for all levels of experience, especially those just starting out. Little to no background knowledge in the area is required to benefit from the book. Lingo and definitions are given in the beginning. Great for use by all educators.

Finally, a book that looks at teaching and evaluating in a organized, systematic approach. A continum of professional practice based on research of successful teaching methods. This is a helpful guide for new and seasoned educators, administrators and others interested in identifying an evaluating good teaching strategies.

however it all depends if u can stick to this book and finish the whole process as the book says
as long as u can finish this book, it's easy to get a full score on TOEFL essay

As a foreign student, this is a very useful book!! Also, for those who intend to make the TOEFL exam, it's a great tool to learn about the topics of the essays, what to write, and it helps you with the rules of how to write a good essay.

Even I just read part of this book, I already like it. It really tells you from how to write to how to write it professional. It gives me lots benefits to learn and shorten the way I have to go. I totally believe I will have good score in my test.

I have taken the CBT TOEFL a few days ago, and this book was really useful for the Writing Section. When I was preparing for the test, I carefully reviewed each essay example given in this book, and it helped me to become familiar with them in advance.

The book is very practical for those who are interested in developing the curriculum. It covers all facets about curriculum and many examples. But the edit structure is not very clear, besides, the binding is very lousy. The pages fall off easily.

Now in a significantly expanded and updated sixth edition, Developing The Curriculum by academician and education expert Peter F. Oliva takes the reader through a methodical, comprehensive, step-by-step process of currciulum developing based upon a core of key models and basic concepts. Chapters address both the technical details and the human dimension of the art of curriculum planning, the philosophy and aims of education, curriculum implementation strategies, appropriately evaluating instruction, and much more. A seminal instructional, illustrating its abstract concepts with diagrams, discussion questions, supplementary exercises and exhaustive, in-depth text.

This is a definite college textbook, written in small font. It is packed with curriculm models from the past and semi current models for developing curriculm. It is useful to have to refer to when discussing the history of and various models of curriculm designs.

I couldn't believe how much the lsat changed in the newer version, I am so glad I had a chance to review them before taking the test. Well worth the money!

Wow! I'm so glad this book is still a hit. I still have the one that was issued to me in 1975 in ninth grade English. I have used it ever since, including for my bachelor's and two master's degrees. The spine is faded pink from sitting in the sun on my reference bookshelf for the last 33 years. This book is single best source you can find for grammar specifics; language structure; expository writing; or tweaking your writing for the essay section on the SAT or a back-to-school paper. A true treasure that is as useful today as it was long ago.

This book was issued to me in my senior year in high school in 1976. I have kept it by my side, has helped me through my college years and then with my children, and now that I have decided to go back to school and am studying translation, I have taken it out of the bookshelf once again because the books we were assigned do not even come close to the perfection (in my idea) of this book. It has traveled with me through the different countries that I have lived in. It is truly a jewel of a book as far as how it is organized, explained and the exercises are very helpful to reinforce what you are trying to learn.

I purchased this book to add to my library after reading several reviews on Amazon. The book has some valuable information, but you can obtain most of the same information from Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style."

I have the 1965 (!) version of this book! I used it in GRADE SCHOOL. I used it as a reference in HIGH SCHOOL. I used it as a reference in COLLEGE. I used it as a reference in GRADUATE SCHOOL. My daughters used it (as a reference) in GRADE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE and now GRADUATE SCHOOL. My son is now using it! During homework, there was always a call for "Dad, can I borrow that red English book?" There isn't anything else like it, not today. It explains, illustrates and gives practical examples of English like no other textbook. it's built as a REFERENCE TEXTBOOK, something few books do today. Textbooks used to be like this once. I was on Amazon and wondered by chance if it were still available, I'd like to get an updated copy. I was stunned to not only find one, but find that every single reviewer felt that same way about this book! You absolutely MUST have this as part of your personal reference along with you home medical books and such! When your child asks, "So, dad, mom- is it "lay" or "lie?" - you'll go running for this book, I guarantee!

I picked up this book after it was recommended by Stephen King in his book "On Writing" pages 121-122 (hardback). Mr. King was right, this is a good book and it has everything you need to become a good writer. I have not reached that point yet, but I know I will eventually get there with the help of this book.

As for a first timer, I had a satisfactory experience. Could not point on any problem at all.

I had to have this bood for one of my classes. I received this book in excellent shape. The price was also very reasonable. Not a bad deal.

Extremely helpful book. Our county has adopted the Maryland State IEP format this year. Having read this book, I feel much more prepared to produce meaningful documents that will meet the needs of my students and measure their progress.

You could boil this puppy down to a tablespoon full. Seriously, there was something of substance on a few pages. And it was good! But that was it. Was required text for me- says something either about the prof. or the institution. Look for something meatier!

I found the examples very useful, to give me a guideline when I'm creating my own IEP's.

I am new to writing IEPs and now writing the transition goals for a young adult program. This book has been so helpful in making sure everything is up to par. In fact, our IEP co-ordinator was impressed with my first efforts and has used some of my work in plan of care meetings.

Not bad for a beginner!

This is a wonderfully comprehensive look at research in the field of course design and instruction. I work with faculty and the research that this book provides for the work that we do is crucial. I am able to cite research and underscore the importance of what I have been teaching then all along.

The title of this book makes it seem less important than it really is. This book is about research.

This is an assigned text in a course I am taking. It seems like a good choice so far, but I've only read one chapter. The book arrived in good shape. The packaging was very good-no bent book covers.

This book changed the way I design my college level courses in a very effective and enjoyable way. It will give you a lot of insight on the design of courses that will encourage students to continue learning. I also enjoyed all the reference on the results of scientific work that deals with innovative teaching methods. You will love this book.

Fink starts with an interesting proposition: What do you want your students to know several years from now?
To be realistic, while it would be great for my students to have a working sociological vocabulary five years from now - I would rather they look at their world with respect and understanding, treat other people with dignity and grace, and be able to think critically about the world around them.
Fink proposes that curricula and teaching methods can (and should) be changed to meet the ever changing educational needs and dynamics of today's students. The text soundly lays out justification for the change in educational environments, and provides a sound framework to build classes that reach beyond memorization and regurgitation. Fink advocates setting students up for success by meeting their needs for core subject components, tying subject matter together with other subjects, personal life experiences, and the student's social context. The logical effect being, students who learn more, because they want to, and retain the material longer.

This book is worth it. I graduated from a graduate program (in education) and this information has increased/expanded my knowledge as to how things must be done in the classroom (when teaching, when testing, and when lecturing). For example, each square of information must be related to the other square of information in order to reach ones point with ones students. Education is about detail. Let this information from this book change the way you see and teach the information you have obtained a degree in. Let it take you to new spheres, or portals of information that were always present in the work that you do, but that you never saw because one lacked the tools in order to open up those worlds. Create beauty in the work that you create (in the quizzes, in the lesson plans, in the rubrics chart, in the surveys, etc.) What you lecture must be from the book, and what you assign for reading must mirror the lecture, and that equals learning.
