I'm a teacher myself. I've taught all sorts of kids all sorts of things! Well, this Sunley character is quite a case. Looking through the book, some of the activities are great fun, but some are a notch or two away from questionable. For instance, activity number 7-A4 (she uses a solid and reliable numbering system with fun little characters forcing others into the shapes of numbers, she doesn't use cute and fun names like other authors, but it works) involves the female students and male students lining up on different sides of the room. Once the females are ready, they each get to throw a piece of clay at the boys, shouting out a verb. Once all the boys are on the ground, the girls win.

If you are looking for a workbook with pages to do, this is not it. I guess this would be "Fun with Grammer" if you have more than one child. It's mainly games you can play to learn grammer, which takes more than one child to play. Classrooms and larger groups could benefit greatly with this book.

I have many grammar activity books, but this is definitely the best! It includes many ideas for learning grammar in a way kids don't even realize they are learning because they are having so much fun doing them! For example, my students loved to make "animal prepositional poems". I had another teacher borrow the book, and she bought it herself! With this book you are teaching quality not quantity.

I am using this book for a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. The writing is very straight forward and easy to understand. It talks about several models of leadership and how those concepts apply to Educational Administration. Each week, my class is reviewing the case studies in the book- which is interesting. They give the vignette, and ask the reader how they would solve the conflict of issue, as a leader.
Finally, the case method applied to education

This is easily one of the most thought-provoking books on education that I've had the pleasure of reading. The first half is a general exploration of leadership in the school setting, but the second half is where the book truly shines--60 different case study activities that present real-world situations that appear in the course of the school day and challenge you to solve them. I learned a lot about my leadership style and what I needed to know to become a better leader by reading through them; I think it'd be an invaluable resource for anyone in the principalship.

Samet's colonels and cadets can provide us with some valuable lessons about how well this nation has accomplished the purpose of higher education and a national military academy in its free society. This characteristic American mix is rooted in the founding of both the Republic and the USMA. Adams and Jefferson, with their particular wisdom encouraged the multiplicity of educational paths which has given such strength to the confidence we have in our military services. The role of the volunteer citizen-soldier is well known to all of us in the products of our public and land grant colleges, but we may have less contact with the professional soldier who is a product of West Point or the other service academies.
This book presents these people( women, now, as well as men) as both typical American college students and as somewhat different, shaped as they are by a precise career path, conditions and expectations. The career officers, typically graduates returning to the West Point staff after a variety of duties, are similarly depicted. This humanizing portrait, not always flattering, helps the reader to appreciate the complexities at the heart of at first sometimes seemingly silly situations. An incident of a hat left behind after class and a hatless cadet, torn between hatlessness in this most uniform of environments and unofficial borrowing of the hat unquestionably left by the taker of his hat, as well as an upperclassman's practical solution makes the value of a philosophical discussion of ethical choice understandable; although, the author does not draw the moral, we see the importance of scruples vs exegincy in a future life and death situation. What guidelines are there to deal with the always new nature of command.
Samet offers some literary models to her students. I might include a few more, especially the studies of command in Conrad's works, Crane's Red Badge, the dilemma of Sir Gawain, and clearly more Shakespeare, but the subjects she discusses are valid points of debate in literature classes. I must disagree with other reviewers on the author's "politically correct" attitude and style. We ate trapped in English by our gendered pronouns, and sometimes "P.C." attempts are absurd but this author's use is clearly situational. So too she is takes care to discuss teaching, not the war. I was envious, however, of the continued contact she seems to maintain with former students. One of the pains of the academic life is that after a long career so many young people who are for a semester or two the focus of attention become sparks of a moment in a professor's life.

I agree with the other grads. Find another book to read. This is too liberal, too politically correct, and too critical of our government. They're supposed to be creating leaders who are tough in mind and body, not cynical apologists. Anyone on staff who recommends this book should be separated, in my opinion. What is happening to West Point when things like this are not disparaged up there?

A well written account of how literature affects the soldiers, written by a woman who knew nothing about the military when she became an instructor in the English Department at West Point. As a graduate of that institution, I can say that she has a good understanding of the trials and tribulations of cadets as they struggle with their daily lives as well as the prospect of going off to war ... and possible death.

This book is well written. It deserves a high rating for that . But I cannot agree with many of the things the author says, and presumably teaches our cadets. Are they trying to make West Point slide down the slippery politically correct slope like other colleges? This book is Liberal. It is telling us in plain (albeit subtly) English that the teacher is trying to impart her political biases on our cadets. It is doing that so well and cleverly, I can do nothing other than praise it. (I fear it will attract a crop of bleeding heart liberals rather than warriors to defend our country, however). Does the author require the book in conjunction with her coursework? I'm surprised at the interest in this book, or any such book, at West Point that is indicated by its apparent sales. The book is not good for the mindset of soldiers, just like losing on the football field is not good. A more useful book to read would be a non-political book that shows new leaders how to handle the real world, "graduate" from good to great leadership, beat out their competition, and quickly rise in their career. "Dedicated to West Point: GOING BEYOND Leadership of Character:.." is the new book I would recommend for that, having read most of the frontline, bestselling books available. But, as to "Soldier's Heart: Reading Literature...", again I must say, it is a smooth and intelligent piece of literature, and deserves kudos on that basis, notwithstanding my not always agreeing with its opinions.

A short review: If you're a USMA grad, save your time and find another book to read. Soldier's Heart will only frustrate you. Professor Samet has missed the entire point of West Point. I didn't even pass the book along to be read by someone else. I threw it away.
It's a shame that civilian professors like her are allowed to teach there.

This is one of the most helpful texts that I have purchased in the past year. It is easy to read and gives lots of examples as well as many points to ponder. HOWEVER, (if it matters to you)- make sure that you do not get the BOOK ALONE version. There is an online component that you need an access code to, which doesn't come with the book unless you buy the other version (I believe it said "with myeducationlab" in the item description). As a matter of fact, it's cheaper that way by about $8.00 believe it or not. I had to buy access separately because I waited too long to return the one that I bought which was book alone. I guess you have to live and learn... I hope someone benefits from my mistake!

"Classroom Management..." is THE book for those who are looking for the proverbial Teacher's Manual. Apart from covering all the basics in a lot of detail, it offers checklists and (so-called) case studies. The downside of this is that the book starts out a bit dry and too straightforward, with instructions so clear-cut you would think they are for operating some sort of machinery. The "case-studies" are examples rather than studies, so the objection here lies with the misnomer. These are clearly minor drawbacks to a great book that only gets better as you read on. With a fabulous Further Reading section after every chapter, and delectable cartoons sprinkled throughout the book, it is an essential text for every teacher's personal library.

Lots of good tips that one can take right into the classroom and use with students. This would be a great book to do a book study group on!

This book is an excellent transitional text that links instructional strategies that work (i.e., produce improved student achievement) with practical uses of available technology. Too often, technology is considered a separate subject in K12 education. This book shows how technology supports and enhances sound instructional practices.
It is a must read for school technology directors and curriculum directors. Thanks to the REMCAM (Regional Educational Media Centers Association of Michigan) for recommending it.

We bought this after my first grader's successful results with the first book. It is sytematic, comprehensive, and the language is not overly simplified. The author doesn't condescend to my third grader, a voracious reader who recognizes "dumbed down" speech and writing and is turned off by it. New material is presented in a no-nonsense, sequential manner, and as each new part of speech is studied, it is also diagrammed. My analytical son really likes that. The emphasis on dictation was a useful surprise. I didn't realize he had a tough time summarizing until we encountered these lessons. This book both diagnosed and addressed weaknesses I didn't know he had due to his extremely high reading ability. I'm very pleased with this one. Note: I tried to use the teacher edition only, but it was a hassle. I broke down bought the workbook and it made things much easier.

I am a homeschooling granny and have tried numerous Language Arts Programs. Out of all the programs I have tried this is the best by far in my opinion. In addition to the 8 parts of speech this program also covers the following.
Parts of a book, Initials, Titles of Respect, Punctuations, Direct/Indirect quotations, Diagramming of Sentences, Contractions, 6 Nonfiction Narration Exercises, 6 Poem Memorizations, Writing Letters, Dictionary Skills, Alphabetizing by first, second, and third letter, Syllables and phonetic spelling, Synonyms and antonyms (using a thesaurus)and Avoiding double negatives
I would say this is a pretty comprehensive program. The only complaint I have about this programs is that in order to use it effectively. For variety I sometimes use worksheets from softbasics software and find that I will have more than enough materials to last two or more years
