This paperback textbook was required for a college course. I like the way it is formatted, with focus questions and intervention strategies on each topic. I have already used it as a resource for another class. I ordered it used ("like new condition") through one of Amazon's vendors. It was much less expensive than it was in the college bookstore. It was delivered sooner than I expected and was in new condition.

I recently purchased this text book to help me with the exceptional students in my class. The book is up to date, but I gave it only 3 stars because of the way it is formated on the page. The paper also has a sheen to it which in certain light makes it difficult to read. Maybe I'm picky, but repositioning the book due to the sheen is wasting my time and delaying how much reading I can do.
With that in mind, I would recommend 'Including Students with Special Needs' by Marilyn Friend & William D. Bursuck instead. The layout is easy to read, and the sheen is not intense (easy on the eyes).

Not only is this book chock full of sound advice, rationale, and examples (a good balance, too!), but Katie Wood Ray is a remarkable author herself and serves as a wonderful model as she writes about teaching writing. I read this book cover to cover during a pretty densely packed quarter at school and have gone back to it again and again as a rich resource.

If you are at all doubtful or confused how to conduct writers workshop with
younger (K and 1) students this book is for you. It outlines how to get started and sustain successful writing throughout the year. Book layout is easy to read (plenty of space in the margins for notes) and there are pictures along the way to clarify and inspire new great ideas in any classroom. A must read if you are in K or 1 for the first time or want to implement a writers workshop.

I recommend this book to anyone venturing into the writing workshop approach to teaching writing to young children.

This book teaches you pretty much everything you need to know about the RICA. From examples to a detailed description of the format of the test, it certainly helped me feel very prepared. The only thing to watch out for is that the questions in the book are easier than those on the RICA (for the most part). So, I would suggest using it along with the practice test you can download from the RICA website. Between the two you should be more than sufficiently prepared.

Of the 4 books I purchased for RICA, this one is the one that best mirrors the actual exam (just took it). The questions are concise and constructed well. The case studies and essay questions are very close to those on the test as well.
Don't waste your time on the XAM book. It's awful. Get this one and the book called "Case Studies in Preparation for RICA" by Rossi. The Cliff Test Prep is ok, but if you're choosing carefully, this is the one to get.
Good luck!

I took a class that had chapters from this book for some of the assigned reading. Other than practicing a case study, we did little more with it. When I took the RICA, without any additional studying, I passed it the first time. I have a friend whom I consider genius who is on his third attempt. I told him about this book (I'd loaned it to another friend already) and this time he passed it.
Pay particular attention to the "case study" preparation section. It's invaluable for the test!

I thought this book was a GREAT way to review for the RICA. I am sad to say that I think I learned more about teaching reading from this thin review text book than I did throughout my whole teacher education program (I won't say which University I am at!)!
To get the most use out of this book here is what you should do. Set up a grid like the one I am going to try and explain to you how to make (see below) and then fill it out as you read. This book totally saved me and I passed the RICA and did very well on it (I got 4 pluses on the first two domains, and the case studies, and 3 pluses on the 3rd and 4th domains).
GRID MAKING DIRECTIONS:
1) Your grid will have three columns and twelve rows.
2) The first row will be labeled like so (I will show each cell in between lines like this |xxxx|xxxxx|xxxx|):
Area | How to teach it | How to test it
3) The different "areas" are listed below. Put each area name in a different row.
- Phonemic Awareness (PH)
- Concepts About Print (CAP)
- Phonics and Word Identification (PHON & WRD)
- Spelling (SPL)
- Comprehension (COMP)
- Literary Response (LIT RESP)
- Content Area Literacty (CONT LIT)
- Independent Reading (IND RDG)
- Writing (WR)
- Vocabulary (VOCAB)
- Structure of English (STRUC ENG)
4) Now your grid will have each area listed but how to teach that area and how to test that area are blank. As you read the book fill in those two blank spots for each area and you will be all set.
TRUST ME. THIS BOOK IS AN EXCELLENT REVIEW FOR THE RICA. AND NOW THAT YOU KNOW HOW TO SPECIALLY USE THIS BOOK TO STUDY FOR IT YOU ARE ALL SET! GOOD LUCK!!

I just took the RICA exam and used this book as well as course material to prepare for the exam. I found "Ready for RICA" lacking in its depth and context. It provides a consice overview of the content areas but lacks in its review of strategies. I also noticed it focused too much on elementary compentency and not enough on higher grades or ELD.
I don't know if I passed the RICA yet, but I did not feel this book prepared me enough for the actual exam.

This is a wonderful resource for middle school reading teachers. Hands-on projects make books so much easier to comprehend for students and this book has great, fun ideas. My students love pop-up books and when they can make their own they develop a new love for reading. That's just one of many inventive, interesting projects in this book. I recommend it for all elementary and middle school teachers.

As a practicing psychologist working with women I am always trying to help women understand not only their personal dynamics, but the forces in society that influence and impact us. This book does a wonderful job of explaining the multitude of factors that make up the complexity of being in our society as women. I recommend this book as an essential read.

Women's ways of knowing -just like Perry's book (1970)- shows in a clear manner the epistemological development after adolescence. The described 'ways of knowing' bear a close resemblance to Perry's 'positions' or Baxter Magolda's ERM. We have shown that these models portray a development that is also described by our own learning/teaching conceptions model.

Female Engineer "discovers" her own voice

This book represents a real setback for women, rational thought, science, scholarship, America and Western civilization. Women do not have separate "ways of knowing." This is truly drivel. An intelligent and educated person is someone who is prepared to collect evidence, evaluate its quality, weight its strength and reach a defensible conclusion. This statement remains true for men or women, in any field at any time.
This book promotes self-pity and failure. A real recipe for failure for any young women buying this utter nonsense. This is not the middle ages, men do not lord power over women, in fact, men are part of the unprotected class which can be stereotyped and ridiculed with impunity.
As a female engineer I can tell you that my "way of knowing" is the same as anyone else's way of knowing. One reviewer here couldn't understand how people learn physics, that I suggest, is the result of her believing the type of nonsense pedaled by this author. People learn physics the same way people learn anything: step by step, with effort and self-discipline.
Please also note that 40 years after the resurgence of feminism in the United States women are still very much a minority in engineering although they are welcomed with open arms. In my freshman physics class, there were only 5 women among 70 students. Three of those women dropped out. You can't be an engineer if you drop out of first year physics. Modern feminism has encouraged women to blame others for their lack of success and to ask "society" to make them successes by fiat, as a result these women aren't ready for college level mathematics or physics. They are not prepared to put in the effort that it takes to succeed. They aren't ready for true leadership roles in any other field, either.
I hope no young women is influenced by this ridiculous, ludicrous and counter-productive mindset. If Western culture had been guided by this author's mindset, we never would have made it to the moon, found a cure for polio, or invented the internet. Sheesh

Although this book is a textbook I purchased it as a new parent for use as a guide to my daughter's development. While it does contain a great deal of useful information it doesn't go into significant detail about any particular phase of development but rather gives an overview of each stage, hitting the highlights. Nonetheless I would buy it again and think it was a good investment.

The Fluent Reader is Rasinski's definitive work on the subject. It is a book that should be on every grade school teacher's shelf. The strategies developed in this book are applicable to any age or grade level. Since fluency is directly correlated with comprehension, it is imperative that children learn to read fluently as soon as they know how to decode. This book shows how to make that happen!

This book is fantastic! It is easy reading with ideas that are applicable the moment you start reading. I teach kindergarten and some of the ideas had to be watered down to meet my needs, but for grades 1-8th it is perfect.
I ususally get rid of a book after I've read it, but not this one. It is a great reference book for any teacher. I highly recommend this book.

Tim Rasinski has successfully married theory and practice with this easy read, and included forms, resources and practical ideas that can be integrated into the classroom immediately. We purchased them for several teachers in the district so that they can get the strategies to students without delay. Strongly recommend this resource to others!

Once every two or three years I am pressed into service teaching the course "Fundamentals of Arithmetic and Logic." The course is designed to give elementary school teachers the background in mathematics that they need. This book is designed for that course, which is the context in which I examined it.
The coverage is standard for such courses, nearly identical to what we cover in our course. The chapter headings are:
*) Thinking critically
*) Sets and whole numbers
*) Numeration and computation
*) Number theory
*) Integers
*) Fractions and rational numbers
*) Decimals, real numbers and proportional reasoning
*) Algebraic reasoning and representation
*) Statistics: The interpretation of data
*) Probability
*) Geometric figures
*) Measurement: Length, area, and volume
*) Transformations, symmetries, and tilings
*) Congruence, constructions, and similarity
This book has a large number of colored illustrations, which is a big help over the uniform black on white format. I am constantly using multi-colored chalk or whiteboard markers in my presentations for math and computer science. There are a large number of exercises at the ends of the chapters and solutions to many are included at the end.
Unlike some other books, there is not a lot of ink expended in covering technological applications. I never use a calculator when I am teaching the fundamentals class and I consider this a positive characteristic of the book. These students need to understand the theory behind these operations and calculators can often disguise what is really being done
I do not know if and when I will teach our fundamentals class again, our math and computer science departments are in a dramatic state of unpredictability. However, at this time, this book tops my list of potential texts.

I would recommend this book for anyone intrested in teaching younger children mathmatics. It starts on the basics such as addition and goes through geometery. It is very helpful in reminding adults how to do some basic math that we might have forgot. I used this book two semesters in a row at CSU Stainislaus. There isn't a single Liberal Study major who hasn't used this book. This book has "Highlights from History" that tell you about the people that created the different math ideas. "Hands On" gives you fun math activities to try and pieces from the NCTM standards and many more helpful articles throughout the chapters. This book makes teaching math intresting for you and the children you teach it to.
