This was the required book i needed for class. It was about 10 more dollars at the bookstore. When I started my english class I had the previous edition that my sister had used the year before, so I needed this book to arrive within a week. It was delivered pretty fast and of course in mint condition. The book itself I think is way better than the previous edition and I'm glad I got it from Amazon

I'm currently using this for a freshman English course, and I find it is a complete mess. There are historical mistakes (claiming Cicero was the greatest writer of the Roman Empire -when Cicero wrote during the Republic), spelling errors, and even grammatical errors (take the title of Chapter 4 for instance: "Types of Synthesis: Explanatory and Argument" -has the author ever run into the term parallelism?).

The book is full of redundancies and proprietary terminology. Some of the concepts are barely explained, others are beaten to death. The writing style is not consistent, leading to the suspicion that many people had their hands in this one -perhaps "authors" in India. Some of the exercises are barely comprehensible. For instance:

"Look over the preceding readings and make a list of the ways they address the overall topics of computers, communication, and relationships. Make your list as detailed as you can. Then write several lists grouping together the readings that deal with similar aspects of the overall topics" (108).

We really don't want our students writing like this, so the last thing we should do is expose them to a textbook like this.

Some of the reading selections are good, and others are vapid, pointless, and generally worthless. Essays about dirty dorm rooms and lack of parking spaces behind the gym -oh yes, this is really provocative.

I challenge anyone to find me a worse textbook.

This is easily the most boring book ever published. It literally put me to sleep last night. I have chronic insomnia. Doctors should prescribe this as a sleep aide. It is atrocious. You're selling these stupid tomes for over $60, put a few images in there. Go wild and print a page in color. You can afford it you money-grubbing swine.

The book provides quality information about research papers and topical essays that effectively demonstrate the many major parts of a research paper. It focuses on summary, synthesis, critique, and analysis; the inside cover gives the reader an easy to read summary of the contents. While the subject matter of writing papers is fairly dry, the information contained in the essays is somewhat interesting.

Mak[[ASIN:0205518869 Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners: The SIOP Model (3rd Edition) (SIOP Series)] is a "must read" for all ESOL educators in today's world of high stakes testing. The SIOP model described in this book is based on research of the best practices of sheltered ESOL and regular teachers. These "best practices" are combined in a format for teachers to use in planning and executing content area lessons that will also promote English language development. Since our ESOL students are expected to pass content area tests to receive a high school diploma in four years, it is imperative that we begin teaching them content in a structured way while they learn the English language. I've been to several conferences and workshops telling about the SIOP model, but this book has helped me to truly understand it and has inspired me to use the SIOP model in my content ESOL classes in the coming school year. If you only have a limited budget for professional resources, make this book your number 1 choice. Get your faculty together and use it as professional development tool to ensure that your ESOL students are receiving the best instruction possible to eqip them for education in American schools.

This is a great teaching book. I rarely write reviews but had to make an exception for this book. It is written in a clear style and includes a CD for the computer where you can see good teaching examples. It gives and compares great teaching lessons to poor teaching lessons on the same topic from 1st grade through high school.
I have been teaching for a number of years but this book has greatly improved my teaching skills. It focuses on teaching ESL students from 1st grade through high school, emphasizing oral interaction, but the lessons are just good examples of teaching for the general classroom at any level. I highly recommend it - period!

This item along with the Powerscore Logic Games Bible are must haves for LSAT study! I wish I would've spent more time on this book though. I took the June 2008 LSAT and receieved a 153. My logic games section was my best with 21/23 correct. I know that if I study this book more that I could definitely improve my score, which I plan on doing this upcoming October 4 LSAT! I've already pre-ordered the Powerscore Reading Comprehension Bible which will ship on Sept. 4 from Powerscore's website because that's by far my weakest section. If it's anything like the other books then it should be a big help!

This is the best book written on the subject of LR ever! This guy have put more thought into this subject than any other author on the market. I highly recommend this book and the logic bible for prepping for the LSAT. Skip the expensive LSAT companies like TESTMASTERS, Kaplan and PR, this book is way more comprehensive and so much cheaper than paying over $1000 dollars for the classes. I had to go over the book twice just to absorb all the information given in the book.

This was the first book that gave me the breakdown of each type of logic reasoning problem set. It allows you to understand the type of logic reasoning/question being presented so that you may immediately begin to eliminate certain answers. This analysis will in other instances, let know what answer to look for based on the type of logic reasoning and/or question.

For those of you looking for known shortcuts to understanding question types, then this book is for you. This is how I have come to do well, by knowing the shortcuts and secrets that would normally take a team of people to create.

If you have a natural gift for distinguishing types of questions already, then you may find this book tedious and over detailed.

An Absolute Must - Forget About Kaplan

50% of your score on the LSAT is tied to Logical Reasoning. You may think you are hot on this subject, but everyone can benefit, and should benefit, from detailed study on the subject. Logical Reasoning should be where you make up for points lost in the Logic Games. This book, with real LSAT examples (not imitations) will help you do this with well-expressed strategies to check your answers and to eliminate wrong answers - that means you SAVE TIME! Pay a little extra for this if you are serious about Law School. As for a Kaplan book? I got suckered into it over this book, at first. The comparison? Take your Kaplan book and use it as a coaster or kindling in the fireplace. Kaplan is useless.

This book was recommended to me by a colleague. "Teaching . . . " empowers you to make decisions that are best for you and your students. The recommendations by the authors show how being in a "thinking state" allows you to offer choices to help students make good decisions regarding their behavior. I have been frustrated and exhausted trying to devise consequences which are appropriate. This method puts it back in the student's lap to develop the appropriate behavior. Read it once to get the overall ideas, then read it again to further your understanding.

There is something for every type of student here. There are universal strategies from basic reading comprehension to literary analysis. I've always struggled with how to teach inference and analysis to students- I know how I do it, but how do I transfer this knowledge to my students? This book covers the strategies along with the author's personal experiences teaching them in the classroom. Most, if not all, teachers will be able to relate to the author's humorous yet realistic writing style. Student responses to reading are reenacted and I found myself nodding and smirking with the commonalities. The book makes it all come to life.

I immediately tabbed the book for easy reference for use with middle school teachers. EVERY literacy coach needs to own this book! I used one of the activities from the book today to demonstrate reading for a specific purpose, and the teachers immediately said they wanted to use it with their students. This would be an excellent choice for a study group or book club!

This book is a quick read and you are bound to get a greater understanding of how to create a classroom climate that is safe, and provides a place for children to be honest about their learning, confusion and understanding on a text. Reading this boook has given me several lesson plans that will help me teach my students this upcoming year and I feel well-prepared!

If you're a therapist or therapy intern looking for ideas to use with children in groups, there are several good ones in here. Some need weird supplies, but most have a good core concept that you can tweak to work with common elements in the classroom. Especially good for "Social Skills" groups, which seem to be more and more popular in elementary schools today.

Famed educator Ron Clark originally agreed to teach for North Carolina solely because of a program which would pay for his college tuition if he agreed to do so. His first classroom was a troubled group of elementary students who had already run through a slew of teachers by midyear. After becoming very well respected in rural North Carolina, Clark stunned family and friends by deciding to move on to a different set of challenges and teach in Harlem, New York. To deal with difficult students and situations, Clark developed 55 rules to help students achieve to their highest potential. A few of these rules include, "if you are asked a question in conversation, ask a question in return," "do not show disrespect with gestures," "know other teachers' names and greet them in the hall by name," and "do not bring Doritos into the school building." While all of these rules are used in his classroom, their goal is prepare students for later life as well.

Quote: "Kids are kids, and many actions that may seem like common sense to us will seem foreign to them."

This book contains many helpful tips for working with children. While many of the same concepts will work will for children (and people!) of every age, the advice is specific to elementary school. There are many traditional bits of wisdom, such as giving students praise, using rewards, structure, and organization, as well as some untraditional methods, such as scolding students in front of the rest of the class (although the peers are not permitted to look at the student being punished), and taking students on class trips to basketball games and the movies. It is a good book of ideas for teachers and others who work with students, even if just because Clark encourages people to read his rules, but them come up with the ideas that will work best for them.

The book presents an abundance of great ideas related to teaching. It offers lots of help not only to beginner teachers but also for teachers who feel that it is time to make some changes in the classroom which will lead to a more positive atmosphere. Of course, not all 55 rules can be applied by every teacher but everyone will find rules that he or she will want to remember and try out in his or her classroom. Even if you are not looking for help or new ideas, the book will be fun to read because of its many real-life stories.

This is a great book for someone who has never taught in a classroom or taken any introductory education classes. All of the information in this book is taught in any entry level college education class. Since Mr. Clark was not an education major in college, the things he learned on the fly while teaching astounded him. To an education major, they are givens. By the way, Mr. Clarke quit teaching within 2 years of receiving the Disney Teacher of the Year award to go on the book promo circuit and make more money than a dedicated teacher does. This book is a waste of money.

This book was valuable as an aspiring educational leader. The 21 responsibilities were extremely valuable in understanding the role that an educational leader must take on. The down side was the statistical calculation which without having had stats in some time made understanding the rationale behind some of the data more challenging. I would still recommend though!

Leadership Behavior to Promote Student Academic Achievement
Helpful Votes: 33 out of 35 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-11
In this book, Robert Marzano, the most effective force in educational reform today, continues his efforts to promote excellence in schools. Here, he and his colleagues turn their attention to defining school leadership behaviors and actions that raise student achievement. They blend practical advice and research to come up with specific steps that school leaders can take to see that students improve academically.

Marzano et al found that there are 21 leadership responsibilities that have a statistically significant relationship with student achievement. All are important, but the three most correlated with achievement are (1) Situational Awareness (of the specific school situation and good use of this information), (2) Flexibility (to adapt to the specific situation and to handle dissent), and (3) (tied) Discipline (to protect teachers from undue distractions), Outreach (as advocate and spokesperson for the school), and Monitoring/Evaluation (creating a system that provides feedback on effectiveness).

They classified previous efforts at school change into two types. First-Order Change is incremental, a step-by-step pattern. Second-Order Change is sudden reversal of pattern or direction, anything but incremental. Both change processes can be effective, and both require different behaviors by school leaders. The three most effective behaviors for First-Order Change are (1) Monitoring/Evaluating, (2) Culture (building a positive culture that influences teachers), and (3) Ideals/Beliefs (leader's well-articulated ideals and beliefs). The three most important behaviors for Second-Order Change are (1) Knowledge of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, (2) Optimizer (optimism as a critical characteristic), and (3) Intellectual Stimulation (of Staff).

The third component Marzano et al looked at was the importance of the leader's ability to select the right work or issues for the school staff to tackle to improve achievement, whether through the use of models of site-specific or of comprehensive school reform. Both models are effective if tailored to the needs and context of a given school.

But hold on. Don't be discouraged from reading this book because you fear that this is just another text full of education theory and cliches. Or don't succumb to thoughts of "been there, done that" and been burned too many times before. Marzano and company offer a thorough, five-step plan that works for experienced or novice leaders. They recognize that no one person can do all they suggest, and they show how to share leadership with other educators and community members. This book is the most clearly defined, research-based plan for improving student achievement you can find today; and everyone, educator or not, who is interested in better student academic growth should read it.

If there were educational awards equivalent to the Congressional Medal of Honor given for service beyond the call of duty for the promotion of student academic excellence, Robert Marzano should receive the first.

It is a great gift to both successfuil veterans and aspiring leaders. Students and the nation are better off for this work. Education professors and school board members will use Marzano's meta-analysis to understand and articulate the qualities we need in today's leaders.

I was very pleased with this item. It was exactly what I needed for class and it was in mint condition. I was also very excited to see how much money it saved me from buying it at the school's bookstore. I have no complaints!

Danielson has written a book that teachers and administrators can actually use to improve their schools. Her Framework for Teaching sets out what teachers really do, in four domains, each of which has multiple comonents and those have multiple elements. She also provides a rubric for evaluating performance for each element. I've recommened that my principal buy a copy of this book, and I'm going to be recommending it to my district, as well.

Solid all-around guidance and structure tool.

Now in a revised and updated second edition, Enhancing Professional Practice: A Framework for Teaching presents a framework for K-12 educators that is based on Praxis III: Classroom Performance Assessment criteria as developed by Educational Testing Service, compatible with INTASC standards. Chapters cover the four domains of teaching responsibility (planning & preparation, the classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities), methodologies for maintaining a professional attitude, specific concerns for specialist positions, a tutorial on how to use frameworks & charts to maximum effect, and much more. The framework system, along with sample logs and unit plans, is highly organized, and easy-to-use in this solid all-around guidance and structure tool.
