Excellent overview of the various different college structures. Author worked hard to create analogies for how college systems were linked, but after getting into middle and later chapters the anlogies made some sense. A good introduction to, as the title says, how colleges work.

The basics of organizational structures

The author provides a thorough discussion of the four basic organizational structures in higher education. What I found most helpful is that he also provides strategies to help academic leaders be efficient and successful in each of the organizational structures described.

This book is one of the most interesting books I have read. it is written persuasively and in a clear language. That it uses hypothetical cases also makes readers clearly see what is happening on the ground practically.

A General Theory for Higher Ed. Administration
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-30
A highly theoretical text; Birnbaum takes the reader through a well-planned out dissection of the common systems and "loops of interaction" in a college or university setting. He mainly focuses on the division of power between administrators and faculty, and gives frameworks for how these groups may interact with each other, or within their group. Birnbaum shows the reader 5 fictional samples of institutions of higher education: collegial institutions, bureaucratic institutions, political institutions, and anarchical institutions. In his final section of the text, Birnbaum gives his idea of the ideal institution: the cybernetic institution, which encompasses characteristics of the four other types. I was a little disappointed that Birnbaum did not manage to tie up all the loose ends or to present a solid recommendation about how to create positive change in an institution of higher education. His theories of open and closed systems, dual control, and tight vs. weak coupling, however, are very insightful and well thought-out. A good basic framework.

Enriching and must book for CEOs

I would grade this book as the 10 star must book for every CEO and would reccommend to eveyone who is genuinely interested in the business of higher education administration. The author deals with many types of power and this is, to my opinion, one of the brightest and essential parts of the book. I generally admire Dr. Birnbaum and enjoy reading his books very much. It is a great privilege and opportunity that AMAZON has this book and one can get the book. The other brights sides of this book have been reviewed and thouroughly studied by many professionals. The book has been in great demand at the universities where the highed EdAdmin is studied.

This book had me looking with new eyes about things I thought I knew about and then about things I didn't even know I should know when it comes to educating my children. All in all I loved the book and thought it was very informative and well rounded.

This new edition is much improved over the previous editions - especially the first chapter. This first chapter now includes a lot of information that sets up the rest of the book. Some of it was in the summary chapter before and I always assigned it to the students as the place to begin their reading. Now they can begin at the beginning!

Good Overview, Though Dated on Technology
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-20
This book gives a good overview of different teaching techniques based on technology. However, many of the key references are from the 80s and 90s, which dates a lot of material. Technology is clearly moving faster than the educational researchers can keep up. It's really up to the teachers to keep on their feet and come up with their own creative ways of applying technology in their own classrooms. This book can serve as a catalyst to some ideas, but it's not the end all in that regard.

You can find better...keep looking!

Not that helpful. Very confusing when explaining some information and way overly detailed when explaining other information. There are better resources out there. The class I used this for was very helpful, but the book itself did not teach me anything new. Other books that are more hands on and have you try the things they are talking would be a better buy.

A must have book for classroom teachers using technology.

A thorough look at the impact of technology on classroom teaching. Describes technology as a tool for teaching, not as an end in itself. Good description of individualizing teaching for different learners, when you are beginning to use new technology in your classroom. Explains the different uses of different kinds of computer software for educational uses, and is written in a reader-friendly style. I use it in my 'Integrating Computers into the Classroom' course and get very positive feedback from my students on this book.

My daughter used this workbook throughout the summer to prepare for the start of 5th grade. It includes alot of review and an introduction to new concepts. I liked that it is based on the standardized tests that she will need to take this year. I also liked that there was a place for us to agree to the work she needed to complete and agree on an appropriate incentive for completeing the sections. The fact that the book was broken down also made it easy to find the proper amount of pages to do at a time. All in all I believe this was a good buy.

I have compared many math workbooks at the fifth grade level. This one is outstanding. It presents serious math content in interesting games/drills for all fifth grade topics, such as multiplication, division, fraction, decimal, geometry, charts, and measurement. It strikes a good balance between math concepts and fun learning. My child enjoyed it. When kids have
the interest, they become smarter. Practicing math doesn't have to be painful. When my child takes the online Beestar weekly tests, he often ranks high among his peers. I give credits to this book. Highly recommend.

I really like this math workbook because it has help my 5th grader in math which is tough and harder for him. Which this book allowed him to study and do the work at home to get that extra help and understanding. Which I'm glad to say it has help 100% because he went from a low B to a high B in the 3th quarter. Really I wish I have found this book in the 1st quarter in 5th grade because I know he would have gotten Ath on his report.
Plus when you get the Scholastic Success with Math Workbook Grade 5 ( Grades 5 ) in the mail the package was in 100% excellent and great condition. Can't say anything bad or wrong about this product.

This workbook is a great way to review concepts in Math.

Functional Behavior Assessment For People With Autism: Making Sense Of Seemingly Senseless Behavior by Beth A. Glasberg (Consultant for Douglass Outreach at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey) is an informed and informative analysis of the behavior tendencies and habitual pursuits of children with autism. As many sufferers of autism engage in certain behavior which might be cause to others' discrimination of them. Thoroughly accessible for non-specialist general readers with an interest in autism, Functional Behavior Assessment For People With Autism is an extensively informative and exceptionally detailed explanation of the conditions autism might cause, as well as a productive examination of valid and helpful solutions for which it should be given high praise, and is recommended very strongly to teachers and parents of autistic children.

This book is very concise and plainly written. I began working in Special Ed. not so long ago, and found this book full of helpful information and I especially like the "keep it simple" side bars. The first time I had to write up a behavioral analysis,I used this book as a guide, and it made the process so much easier! Recently took a graduate level course in Autism and the practicing instructor felt the book was one that she would add to her reference library also. I used this book as a blueprint for beginning new behavior mod programs with my one-on-one student, and with this guide I was able to decide which behaviors were the best ones to begin on. I continue to use this book for reference, and highly recommend it.

I am just starting out as a sub for grade school and wanted to be well prepared. I saw great reviews on this particular book and decided to go for it. I was not dissapointed. It has a lot of good tips and includes some handy filler/emergency tactics such as games and pages to copy to keep the day running smoothly. It also has lots of handy information that is grade specific so no matter where you go, you will have a reference and appropriate backup to refer to. I highly recommend it.

This book is very handy and has been very helpful in giving a new teacher ideas for use in the classroom. Many activities and reproducable sheets are included as well. While most of the content on being an effective teacher I have read elsewhere in such titles as Harry and Rosemary Wong's 'The First Days of School', this handbook is recommended for teachers who are starting out.

Practical Magic!

Review Date: 2007-07-25
This book is the best resource out there, and is currently being used at the local university. I am an education major and my campus uses this edition as well. There are many helpful bulleted lists for quick reference while in the classroom. Several supply freebies are printed up just waiting to Xeroxed st your convenience. Still, the best features are it's ease of reading and application of little details that make all the difference. This is the kind of "practical magic" you don't receive from a formal education that makes all the difference come game time.

And may your journey as a substitute go well....

This book provides some real insights and valuable suggestions for how to approach substitute teaching. In fact, I have used the techniques outlined in the book to solve other problems with regards to public speaking and small group leadership.

Overall, I have found the book helpful, although I do have one very minor complaint...Although the book makes every effort to be clear in its presentation (using reminder icons etc.) The headings threw me off. Generally you expect Larger headings to be the main point with smaller headings explaining subpoints; however the headings in this book kind of blurred together using the same fonts, so I had to go back in the reading to determine what the over arching themes were for the chapter.

As I said, very minor complaint!!! Otherwise, I would say...Buy this book first! The others just reiterate the same points, and they don't do it with half the level of thoroughness.

Great intro to the concept of home education with a heavy emphasis on the Charlotte Mason method. I re-read this little treasure regularly to keep myself on track. Loving books as much as I do tempts me to compile quite a list of Books We Must Have for School. The CM way of thinking ensures I stick only with the best, the essentials. I highly recommend it!

I first read this book because it was written by Susan, one of Francis and Edith Schaeffer's daughters. Little did I know that it would become the foundational book to becoming a homeschool parent when I decided to take my youngest child out of the public schools.

One doesn't need to be homeschooling their children to appreciate this book. Susan writes in the same warm and friendly way as her mother. However, if one is homeschooling and using the Charlotte Mason "method", this book is an essential volume to have in your library.

For those who are disenchanted with the high pressure standardized-testing mentality prevalent in classrooms today, this book explains the educational philosphy of Charlotte Mason. It is God-focused (Susan is the daughter of Christian apologtic Francis Shaeffer), natural, and relaxed. It is a must-read for any classroom teacher, homeschool parent, or school administrator.

After my son was diagnosed with ADHD I visited the bookstore and found a book that I thought would be helpful. When I visited my pediatrician I brought the book in for her to review. She thought the book had an agenda and cited those studies that supported that particular point of view. She recommended this book and after ordering it, I feel confident this is the only book I need.

My daughter's teacher loaned me this book after I shared with her my frustration over understanding "how" my daughter thinks and how to help her with her homework and life in general. If you don't have ADD you can't understand why things that seem perfectly logical to you make no sense what so ever to the person with ADD. I sat down thinking I would flip through and read a few passages...I've been reading for two hours now and an hour ago got paper and pen to start taking notes. There are too many notes! I'm now ordering the book for myself. I have read many books on ADD and this is the first one I've found that gives clear detailed advice on ways to "teach" your child some impulse control, and help her improve her concentration and study skills...BEFORE jumping right to medication treatment.
