Get Ready to Be Completely Challenged
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-20
For someone who simply enjoys a challenge, the LSAT Preptest 45 is the perfect solution to prep you for the LSAT. The questions are very true to the actual LSAT tests.

One thing to keep in mind when using these Preptests is to understand that there is a clear methodology and frame of mind for conquering the tests. My strongest recommendation is to take your time to throughly understand how the questions are being presented to you and understand the patterns and logic behind the questions. Then, once you have mastered that, start timing yourself on how fast you can go. You will quickly realize that it doesn't matter what the question is, HOW you arrive at the solution is ALWAYS THE SAME!

So, be prepared to be challenged and intrigued. These preptests take the frustration out of not "getting" a question that is presented and trains your mind to become focused on arriving at logical solutions to tough questions.

This text is a timely and insightful work. The authors give a good overview of the major assessment instruments used in Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education. Procedural guidelines, cultural validity and family concerns are also discussed. I found that the book is a great reference tool to go back to when questions arise! I would recommend this book to anyone working in the field of Special Education.

Idiosyncratic and utterly fascinating

Tobin et al compare preschools in Japan, the US and China in a fascinating cross-cultural study. What makes this study so compelling is that you hear not only the authors' interpretations of what they see, but also the opinions of the teachers, administrators and the parents OF ALL THREE CULTURES. By having parents, teachers and administrators watch video tapes of the preschools in the non-native country, you get an eye-opening assesment of what each preschool is trying to do in its culture and how it compares with what other preschools accomplish. I have my daughter enrolled in a Japanese preschool, and the opnions and analysis on what Japanese preschools are like is dead-on, as is the analysis of the American preschool.

The real eye-opener for those readers not familiar with preschools in Japan is how chaotic, loosely-structured, and easy-going they are. The 30-1 child-teacher ratio makes chaos inevitable, but it forces the kids to learn how to deal with each other, rather than an authority figure. Contrasted to the American pre-school style, where the teacher runs the show, enforces the rules and molds the kids to act in a manner that the teacher/school has decided is appropriate, Japanese kids actually get more practice resolving conflicts and taking responsibility for problem-solving.

This is actually one study that is fun to read, too! Highly recommended.

Tobin's book has been around for a number of years now. Nevertheless, it continues to set the standard in the creation of video ethnography. Graduate students across the nation use this book for its brilliant methodology and for his insightful readings of culture.

Exceedingly well written, concise, interesting, perhaps life-changing, this book makes the science seem less complex and easier to comprehend. A great study companion for my human physiology course, a major aid to my exam scores. Highly recommended for serious or casual studies, or even anyone with interest in the human body at all. I would even read this on my free time; in fact, Im going to go explore the unassigned chapters...

Great book to read for better understanding of human body functions. There are good and colorful illustrations in it. Through the guided illustrations and simplified physiological explanations, it makes easier to connect the function of one part of the body to the other.
Well I made good grade on my exam in anatomy and physiology anyhow ... so I can say that this book helped me a lot.

Real life writing
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-10
I know this book was written for teachers, but as a newspaper columnist, I am often asked to conduct writing workshops for adults and teens who want to become writers. Not only do DiPrince and Thurston give hundreds of prompts for on-the-spot writing exercises, many of which help the writer practice and identify good writing techniques, but they also give 50 examples of how to get started writing in "the real world," which is what most adults in these workshops want. For years I'd done my own research and shared my own experiences concerning good places to start out writing, but this list tops anything I ever did on my own. Also, as a substitute teacher, I sometimes find I have dead time to fill and these prompts are fabulous both as fillers and as full lessons for those times teachers leave no plans. There's something in here to cover all bases and as the title implies, this book provides exercise all areas of the brain.

Yoga for the Brain is a great workout!

Teaching students to write used to be so boring. I can remember my teachers in school saying, "Be creative!" but I was never really taught how to do that. I am now a teacher and am faced with the challenge of teaching students to be creative. Yoga for the Brain is a great addition to my writing program in that it gives the student something to base their creativity. For example one entry is "What has been a hard lesson for you to learn?" What a great idea to think about! This is not your typical sentence starter book.

Great Writing Tool!

Yoga for the Brain is a wonderful tool for teachers of writing. I use this book daily, along with Unjournaling, as journal prompts for my 6th grade students. They laugh, talk, and really get the imagination going! My kids no longer whine when it is journal time...they actually remind ME to do it! Great book to buy!

One of the best references on word study; making it relevant, easy to implement and a fun way to learn words, their characteristics and patterns.
My Third Grade class looks forward to the variety of activities and their use of the high frequency words and the word wall has increased.

Words are Powerful

Words are part of our language and students must be given the opportunity to play and experiment with words in different contexts. This book is a great resource for the primary grades. It provides useful word study activities that can be implemented in the classroom such as, making new words, word sorts, word ladders, and webs. The text offers an array of appendixes that teachers can use in their classroom. The ends of the chapters are dedicated with professional development ideas to help teachers grow as learners.

Excellent resource!

This book is a must-have resource for teachers in the primary grades. It is clearly written and full of useful ideas. The importance of learning about words is clear, but it can be boring. This book presents the concept of "word study" and describes children as "word solvers" in a most appealing way, and takes the drudgery out of phonics instruction. The lists in the back (e.g., phonograms) are very handy for a busy reading teacher.

I teach college students--both preservice and practicing teachers--and I require this book every year. Students tell me that it is one of the few textbooks that they intend to keep and use regularly.

Outstanding professional text for ALL educators!

Clear, to-the-point, and full of great ideas to help those who work with elementary children learning to read. The feature I like best is the built in professional development suggestions to use the book within a building, a grade or a district as an inservice tool. Don't miss this one!
