Teacher Training Books

This book explains the components of a full teacher induction program, not just mentoring (which they see as just one part and insufficient to really retain new teachers on its own). The format of the pages is very busy, and while there is useful information here, you'll need to weed through a lot of repetition to get to it all. Wong's other book, "The First Days of School" is pitched repetitively too.

The first authority for any student is their teacher. "Reframing Teacher Leadership To Improve Your School" is a complete and comprehensive guide for educators who want to make the most of the educational experience their pupils partake. Revealing a new organizational system, and filled with advice for teachers and administrators, "Reframing Teacher Leadership" should be required reading for all in the field. Recommended for community library education collections.

I bought this book when I started subbing, and it had great info that I wouldn't have thought of, considering my background isn't in education. The classroom management section was to most valuable for me, although I found the whole book useful. I pack this in my sub tote everyday.

Although I consider this book a pioneer in it's field with excellent materials, it could use with some lesson extenders. How can you take a theme and expand it to 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or all day? Also, it needs some good sponge activities.

Like many, I because a substitute with no prior teaching experience. This book is a lifesaver! No other book I've read comes close to the down-to-earth advice it contains. I am a much better teacher because of it.

I have helped do some substituting in the local schools since 1998 and no other book is as comprehensive as this one for training substitutes. I've been to two different workshops on how to substitute, and each one highly recommended this book over ALL OTHERS!!

This book enabled me to become effective as a middle school substitute teacher. The activities alone saved me; the advice made me effective. It is a must for any substitute teacher.

FOUNDATIONS OF AMERICAN EDUCATION provides an excellent basis for preprofessional instructors (students who are going to become teachers). The history and philosophy sections are not too involved with jargon to be useful to undergraduates. On the other hand, for those who have been away from teaching for a few years, for parents who want to find out what's going on, and for students who haven't previously examined education as history, this is a good start. The insets and anecdotes that are set apart from the main body of the text by boxes and underlining are somewhat confusing, but they also contain ideas that should be explored. The prose ranges from stilted to nicely-flowing.
