Very useful resource

This book is useful for many different people involved in education: teachers, future teachers, administrators who support teachers, teacher educators, etc. It includes chapters from preeminent researchers in the field and covers many different areas in education. Each chapter reviews research in the area, and the language is not techno-speak meant to be accessible only to people who spend their lives doing research (my biggest pet peeve with many research articles and chapters). I am a teacher and graduate student. I checked this out from the library and found myself returning it so many times that I decided to go ahead and buy a copy for myself.

This book is a great companion to the class I'm taking on coaching. However, it seems to repeat itself often. At least the chapters are concise and to the point.

I needed to know what a literacy coach was when my principal asked me to consider applying for the job. This book was extrememly helpful in giving me the details in order for me to make my decision. I am now a literacy coach, and I plan to use this book regularly!

The author does a phenomenal job of breaking the topic down into small manageable and inspiring readings; also covers a great cross-section of leaders and the characteristics that made them successful. I ordered a dozen copies as executive and motivational gifts.

J. Kevin Sheehan presents a celebration of what's possible in his biographical snapshots of great leaders. By focusing on the unique character traits of outstanding leaders the author transforms the mysteries of leadership into something very real. He answers the question "what made them great?" in an extremely concise and inspirational style. Great as a corporate gift or graduation present. My children have used it for school projects and I have found inspiration for my own business. No home or school library should be without this most valuable tool.

What all first year teachers need.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-28
I am very impressed by this text. Having taught new teachers for almost a decade I am so pleased to finally have a place where students can get what they need in their first year. They not only hear what to expect but how to work through issues as they arise. I think the format is very user friendly and will not only help new teachers but also remind teacher educators what it feels like to just begin in this crazy profession. The most important aspect of this book is the truth. Dr. Zuckergood does not always say what his new teacher wants to hear (nor does Anne always agree with him) but is honest and upfront with areas of growth. Teacher education needs more of this straight talk when we prepare the next generation of teachers. Excellent book that is now a required text in my introductory course.
