Finally, fun ways to teach grammar!

Review Date: 2008-05-02
I love this book. I teach high school and I was never able to find creative and concrete ways to teach grammar concepts. Anderson takes the best of what we know about how to teach grammar (that is should be taught in the context of a student's own writing, that it should be active, that is should be scaffolded, etc.) and really focuses on how to make that happen. Look at his "sentence smack-down" and the "express lane editing" to really change how you look at teaching grammar. My kids loved it and I really felt like they were getting it and would use it again. The book is teacher-friendly and activity-based and includes copies of handouts.

Where "Grammar" and "Editing" Are NOT Dirty Words

Review Date: 2007-12-15
In MECHANICALLY INCLINED, Jeff Anderson tackles the issue of grammarphobia and edit-phobia head on. You know the diseases. They are endemic in English classrooms everywhere.

Anderson advocates using "mentor" sentences and paragraphs taken from books that interest students. He also details how to set up a writer's notebook where kids can write freely without fear of the Red Pen (which, to them, is like an invader from the Red Planet, as narrated by Orson Welles). The notebook includes sections for creativity, exploration, modeling, and copying well-written sentences and paragraphs.

I especially like Anderson's idea for the Editing Checkout, where students "scan" work looking for specific skills, then create a "receipt" of their findings. NATIONAL ENQUIRERS are not necessary for this activity. The kids will get a kick out of it and (not too loud, now) will learn something about editing (with one pen, two pens, red pens, or blue pens) while they're at it. What more could a teacher ask for? (OK, don't answer that...)

This book is a very dense read, but it was required for my EDF 475 class... so I needed nonetheless. Once you get past the way the text is written, it's really not so bad.

This book helped me learn a little more about American Education and some of its "ins and outs".
I was surprised by the things I thought were true that were not. It is a great book for a student of Education (graduate students usually are required to read it at some point)

This book is a private college text, shared with the whole family, in addition to its use in the classroom. With the exception of some odd attributions to working class people (who are said to "act powerless" and view attempts at negotiations by children as 'sassing' or 'talking back'), possibly a misinterpretation of Annette Lareau's words, this working class family has enjoyed the book tremendously. The book offers the depth of insight necessary to anyone who teaches now or is planning on going into teaching.

This is a pretty good book for what its worth. I needed it for a class so its not like I had a choice to buy it. The writer has some interesting takes on things and I dont agree with everything he says. He does use a lot of charts and statistics which is helpful at times and other times just gets to be annoying. I like the book because it is not hard to understand and most of the time the writers writing flows pretty well.

More Principal "Pep-Rally"
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-21
This is a quick & easy read, but unfortunately, it's just more of the same old "pep-rally" type of advice: be positive, be prepared, always smile, & remember that all your students really want to learn a lot & really look up to you, even when it doesn't seem like it! This type of stuff doesn't do much good when teachers get into the midst of the inevitable problems that come up during the school year. To me, one of the most telling chapters was Chapter 6 "Who is the variable," which is a sort of "everyone should take responsibility" chapter. The author begins the chapter by discussing teacher responsibility, then goes on to tell about his meeting with some business leaders who were concerned about the quality of high school graduates. He ultimately put the responsibility on the business leaders for not having called the school to get specific reports on graduates they hired. In short, the only one he assigns no responsibility to is himself. Some might say he was somewhat responsible for giving the same degree to well performing students & to slackers & trouble-makers--that his signing of the diploma was in fact his recommendation, & that therefore he does bear some responsibility. He complains about teachers who complain about working conditions, but does not seem to feel that it is his responsibility to better those conditions.
I like teaching, & actually like the challenges that keep coming up--but then that's probably because teaching is a second career for me & I know I can quit any time I want. I know there is a shortage of resources & that as teachers, we need to work with that environment (which, to me, is amply rewarded by the long vacations). But it irks me to read these books that try to gloss over all the problems & just provide a superficial, Rah-Rah pep-rally, so-called "motivational" solution. I feel that teachers who get sucked up into this sort of thing are getting set up for a fall.

Do Teachers Aspire to Greatness?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-06
In these early weeks of summer break I have still been thinking about teaching and what has gone before, along with what will present itself in 'the fall' (which for us means the end of July!). This book reminds me what I want to be as a teacher: respectful of all, motivating and challenging, in charge and yet (gasp!) nice!

Teaching is the most wonderful profession in all the world: the opportunity to truly make a difference in the lives of not just students, but their families as well as our colleagues and even our own families. Why not aspire to greatness? And does it really come as a big surprise that the qualities of a great teacher vs. one who is good, fine, or even mediocre may lie in actions and choices rather than in methods and superior knowledge? Why is it that we are taught the importance of repetition in teaching to an objective, and yet we ourselves get cranky if we feel something is "repetitive?"

I am very glad I bought and read this book, and plan to share it with my fellow teachers and administrators.

What a fabulous book to use as a book study with teachers of all levels and experiences! It is a quick-read with ideas that can be implemented as soon as the chapter is done being read. The book lends itself to deep, thought-provoking conversation between staff members whether you are a first year teacher or a "well-seasoned" teacher. Teachers don't want to put the book down once they start reading it. Whitaker draws his readers in by consistently talking about "great" teachers and the effective practices they use. A "must read" for every educator!

Redundant and too idealistic blah blah blah
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-13
If you're an education student or already a teacher this book is mildly inspiring, however it does not offer anything you haven't already heard or read. Most advice is practical and common sense i.e. "form relationships with your students" "don't yell or demean them" "make it 'cool to care'"
There are many more books out there with more substance. The bulk of the author's career is as a school principal (he only taught for a couple years) so the text is written from an administrator's point of view, therefore there are idealistic philosophies and it lacks applicable classroom strategies or solid case scenarios. I do not recommend this book. Although a short read, it is mostly fluff.

This book is incredibly informative and of course (pardon the pun) very mind boggling! As a teacher still relatively new to the profession as well as the various teaching ideologies/philosophies, this book has truly shaped my perceptions on teaching and understanding the 21st century learner. And most importantly, I am able to understand my students from a purely biological point of view and this in itself informs and guides every aspect of my teaching. Even though I did not read the first edition, this book has proven to be a magnificent teaching tool that every teacher, new or seasoned in the profession, should read. There is an undeniable evolution taking place in education and this knowledge of our brains and how they function is the key and gateway to understanding how to teach beyond the factory model and reach the most vital aspect of what makes us human....our minds.

I really needed a good explanation of dyslexia after my daughter was diagnosed with it. I was told of this book by the school reading specialist. Every chapter of the book was eye-opening and helped bring my child's plight into better focus. I now feel so much more informed and better prepared to help my little girl.

I feel empowered to help her and have the insight to know why she reads the way she does. Her reading has improved simply because the quality of my home instruction has improved. I had been hindering her with my improper teaching methods!
Thank you Dr Shaywitz for your brilliant insight and your pioneering research.

Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level

This was recommended to me by several local and state experts as the best single source on the subject, and I have not been disappointed. Parts I and II provide a clear, suscinct overview of the condition, Parts III and IV deal with teaching reading to dyslexics. The Epilogue describes the experience of several very well known and very successful dyslexics. It is not a curse, just a somewhat different operating system.

I did not spend much time with Parts III & IV because my personal point of view has been shaped by Susan Barton's Orton-Gillingham derivitive the one that's available here, and while some of the specific techniques vary the overall thrust is right on. In fairness, the author also recommends using one of the preprepared programs rather than inventing your own, because all of them produce satisfactory results. Obviously she has looked at more progrtams than I have.

Very much worthwhile for anyone in education or for anyone with an exceptionally bright family member or friend who has trouble reading and spelling. It will open your eyes. They may be a lot smarter than you are.

I ordered this book after attending a seminar on Dyslexia. My child has not been officially diagnosed, but this book is fantastic. It explains what dyslexia is and also gives information about other reading disabilities, differences and difficulties. It gives you many activities you can do with your child to help improve reading skills and is very practical for addressing the problems your child may be having. I highly recommend this book for anyone who may suspect that your child has a reading disability.

This book had been recommended reading for me and now I am recommending it to parents of my students.
After dealing with the products of whole language teaching, parents of dyslexic students are desperate for an approach to teaching reading that is more in line with the needs of students.
This book outlines such an approach - and gives reasons/ supporting evidence for why this approach to programming, works.

The book also gave me some visuals I could use to help explain dyslexia to my 8 year old so that he could understand that this only effects one part of the brain and that he is actually very intelligent.

Understanding by design was recommended to me by one of my teachers. This book helped me understand how to approach lesson planning. Backwards design is an excellent way to design curriculum. The templates are very helpful, and almost mindless even. You just have to know what your goals are, and the templates help you do the rest.
I think they should come up with a computer program to make it even easier, but hey, writing is good practice. I rated it four stars, because I haven't found some of the information int he back too helpful- of course I haven't thoroughly read it. I guess it's there for something, but I'm a stickler for not including unnecessary information.

This book complements in practical form the ideas presented in Understanding by Design (UbD). I am using this book as a guide for the design of courses online in higher education. Both have been a wonderful aid to rationalize the amount of resources that I must include in the courses online that I am developing. They are effective tools to determine in concise form and practices the synchronous or asynchronous activities that must make the learners as it demonstrates the intentions reached from the "big idea". I recommend them widely to obtain the deep learning.
