This is a timeless treasure of mathematical understandings generated by Marilyn Burns and her associates. These activities, coupled with hands-on training for teachers, can make a tremendous difference in the mathematical understanding of elementary and early middle school teachers. Most important in this edition are the addition of Burns' revised thinking on Teaching Arithmetic (part 3), and her compilation of discussions for 40 activities (part 4). These two additions have rounded this meaningful math resource into a powerful tool for on-going staff development.

I haven't finished reading this entire valuable resource, but it has a great conceptual framework followed by creative ideas. I teach 7th Grade Mathematics overseas where my students have not had a great basis in analytical thinking and I look forward to using these ideas with my classes this year.

I love this book! It is a great resource with ideas for getting kids interested in math and what questions teachers should ask themselves as they teach. It also points out common mistakes students make and their thought processes for getting there. It is divided into sections by mathematical topics and also has dozens of lesson plan ideas, both for full lessons and those quick time-fillers. This is the most reader-friendly textbook I've ever had to read for a class--it's so easy to read!

I'm a first year fourth grade teacher and always on the lookout for good resources. I'm so glad I found this one. When I first introduced picture books into my mini lessons, I explained that picture books aren't "baby" books -- there are so many high quality, beautifully written and illustrated books out there. Students love the books, they are engaged in lessons, and they use the books as references for their writing.

In addition to the many detailed lesson plans throughout the book, there is a comprehensive listing of things to do with other picture book titles.

This is an excellent text for anyone who has to conduct educational research. I had to purchase it as part of my MEd program and haven't regretted it. The information is clear and accessible. The text is enhanced with a plethora of annotated charts, images and tables. Each chapter begins with a beautiful photograph from a famous film with a humorous caption underneath it. Chapter objectives and summaries are included at the start and ending of each chapter. There are exhaustive appendixes and references. Self-tests, an excellent glossary and thorough indexes help to make this book an educational researcher's best friend.

then this book is NOT for you. I tried to teach myself Spanish (I didn't know any) and this book just did not work out because of its poor construction. The concepts are not clearly described and all too often I found myself asking why is this grammar like this or what is the difference between the different tenses. The examples are not very helpful either.

However, I took a private introductory class and then returned to this book. Here, the book has provided some value with its vocabulary which is grouped by themes (festivals, family, etc). So the book has some value for a beginner if you are also receiving extensive instruction from another source.

Review Date: 2003-12-08
This is the most comprehensive foreign language book I've seen. It's simple, a 6th grader could teach themselves Spanish with this book. Open it, read it, and memorize it. I had a terrible time with French and was not looking foward to learning Spanish, but I picked it up immediately as I went along with this book. When the semester was over, I spent the summer reading the rest of it at my leisure. As far as the other reviews go, I'm not sure what the problem was. It couldn't be explained any more clearly, perhaps they are moving too fast? Take a day for each page or something, whatever works. If you're not picking it up, it may be your study techniques and not the book. If you want extra practice, get the workbook. Both the workbook and the textbook have the answers to every practice exercise (of which there are an adequate amount) in the back of the book. Maybe the previous reviewers were unaware?

This is another (hop, skip, learn is another) great language product by Ana Lomba.
The book has all the texts, and is organized by theme. It's very complete, but simple, with repetitions. The translations (for parents who don't speak French) are in the book, not the CD, another plus, as it allows full immersion.
A few pictures accompany key words for each subject.

It's a nice change from too many products that are marketed to parents (ie with immediate translations!). The French speaker is native (another fairly rare treat in language products for kids in the US!) and there are no clumsy translations.

Just a word of caution: The adult will need to help the child with words they don't know, stop the CD and replay the session etc. It's clearly meant as a (excellent) support for an adult teaching a child.

I learned to speak French as an adult (and am still learning).

As a result, I have had very little exposure to 'children's French' - how to speak to a child and use phrases appropriate for them.

This is a fantastically reliable source for just that, and it is enjoyable to expand my own vocabulary along with my children's.

I am bilingual (Spanish and English) and wanted to add in French with my own children. Since I just partnered in working on Flip Flop French: Ages 3-5: Level 1, I've been using that of course, and I so enjoyed using Ana Lomba's Play and Learn Spanish for my own students and classes, I got it in French.

I haven't been disappointed! After the children (three of them, ages 5 down to 2 years) completed lesson three, they were able to pick up quite a bit of this book and the interesting conversations that go along with the pictures in the book (it's full color!) My children really enjoy coloring and drawing, so after we do the Flip Flop French activity for the day, this is a great supplement and change for them. It's a little advanced for them without the other more simple lessons, but I think they'll continue to grow into it!

All in all, I love it!

Review Date: 2008-03-21
Excellent book to help young children learning basic addition skills. We started this book when my son was 4 years, 8 months. The going was slow for a while, but now we are more than halfway through the book, and I no longer have to guide him on every step. Prior to this book, he had not spent a lot of time learning to write his numbers (this was his first numbers workbook), and now he can write his number 1-29 without help.

For the reviewer who mentioned the pages were full of too many math problems for one sitting, I agree. We improvise, and I divide each page in half with a marker. He gets a sticker for each half-page he completes.

Most importantly, my son's confidence has dramatically improved. When we began the book, he was unsure of himself and easily confused by the many numbers, but time and patience has won out--and he races to get his book now.

I just love the Kumon workbooks because they are so well organized, with pages that are simply laid out and they introduce the information incrementally. It appeals to the learning style of my five year old. I was a tiny bit disappointed by how extremely simple this workbook is. It only covers adding 1 and 2 to the numbers 1 through 29. It says it right there on the cover but somehow I missed it. I would say it's definitely pre-school level and not kindergarten as I'd hoped. I'll probably just do a few of the pages with my five year old and order the next book to do this year with her and let my four year old use this when I need her to have busy-work. The information builds very slowly in this workbook and so it might not be ideal of the child who likes variety in their workbook pages or who struggles with being under-challenged or gets bored really quickly. However for my daughter this will be perfect.

Not as good as other Kumon workbooks

Review Date: 2006-11-04
I have brought all of the Kumon workbooks. Most of the other workbooks are full of bright colorful pictures with lessons containing just the right amount of sit down work. That is not true with this book. It is just pages full of problems -- too many of them for one sitting. They call it simple, because you are only adding 1 to numbers 1 to 29, but it is a bit much for a child trying to learn this for the first time. The book is fine for speed improvements, but find a different book for first time learners.

The stories are short and insightful. Some cut a bit deep in how we think here in the States, but are good checks for our every day assumptions. I like the format of the short stories/devotional. I prefer stories with a point rather than just short sermons. These are stories with a point and some explanation and scripture to back up his take on the events.

An Intriguing Voice Returns from the East to Inspire and Prophetically Critique the West

Review Date: 2008-09-13
Brother Yun is an intriguing religious voice in this new millennium. His roots are deep in 20th-century evangelical missionary work in China and for most of his life he had preached a gospel aimed at traditional 20th-century evangelical goals of winning souls in all lands.

For more than a decade, though, he has lived in exile in Europe (his home base is in Germany now) and his message to Westerners really is an intriguing call to grassroots spiritual action. That part of his message is perfectly in tune with emerging voices like Phyllis Tickle, Brian McLaren, Tony Campolo, Rob Bell and others. In that particular theme he preaches, it's as though his own ministry is leaping forward from a fairly traditional message to become a new prophetic voice in this era of turbulent change in Western Christianity.

It's fascinating to encounter a fully mature Asian Christian returning to evangelize -- and in some cases to criticize -- some of the movements that, a century ago, helped to seed his own church in China.

His earlier book "The Heavenly Man: The Remarkable True Story of Chinese Christian Brother Yun" was a best seller with dramatic tales of life under persecution in China. "Living Water" is a fresh inspirational look at the road ahead.

A lot of the time when I read inspirational books I am unsure if the author is truly sincere, or if they are just writing what sells. With this book I had no doubts! Brother Yun is a true follower of Jesus. Because of his faith he has faced persecution, and yet he has stayed strong. Who better to tell us how to grow?

Shares pieces of brother Yun's life and the trials he has faced serving as a pastor in China.

I love how he believes in becoming a "new wineskin", turning from traditional religious rituals, and truly following Jesus.

Though brother Yun and I come from very different places and very different circumstances, we have a lot in common. Some of this book felt as if I had written it, I shared so many of brother Yun's views.

One of my two current favorite books.

This book can change your life, if you will only let it.

Read his books, if you live in America we don't know what it means to follow Jesus as the Chinese Christians do. We may think we have died to ourself for Him but we need to see others who have suffered for Christ and we can forget our own struggles. The Heavenly Man changed my life and his new book, Living Water is awesome. I am following God and on fire for Him and live for Him completely and would give my life for Jesus and this still put new insight in what God does when we trust Him completely. We don't know what suffering and giving our lives to Jesus is in America. These books will make you stop and think next time you think you are hurting or suffer in life. He shows in, The Heavenly Man, the miracles God does when you put your whole self out there for Him. And the, Living Water, will help you have a closer walk with God.

Monolingual English, Spanish, or Multiple Languages - It's Possible

Whether you want a monolingual English dictionary to help expand the vocabulary of your intermediate or advanced ESL students, or you want to help a struggling beginning Chinese student make a link from their language to English, or you have five different language groups in the class and want to discuss with them the items in a kitchen or fruits or vegetables, the Oxford Picture Dictionary can be a great help. Since the subject-numbering for the pages in all versions of the dictionary are the same, all language groups can listen to the English pronunciation and read the same word in their own language without searching for the right page.
The indivisual students or the teacher needs to help control the rate that the oral words are introduced. Using Pause/Play on the computer for independent or group study or having the teacher or assistant read to the group are both possible. An Advance button on the computer would be much easier than Play/Pause. Maybe there is such a thing, just need to know.
A more accesable list of all the languages included in this publication would be useful. I can find most, but I never know if I've found them all. Over all, this is an extremely useful publication.

This well-structured and nicely illustrated English/Spanish dictionary is a good resource which could easily have been made excellent. Where it comes up short is the lack of bilingual coverage for many entries.

Though the product description does flag the fact that the dictionary's purpose is to "meet the needs of today's English language learners," the layout of the dictionary gives the impression that it is for English speakers learning Spanish as the initial entries are given in English. However, many examples -- most notably the practice exercises -- are given in English only. This could prove frustrating for those wanting learn or expand their Spanish with it or vice versa.

I purchased this book at the beginning of the semester and have found it an invaluable resource. This is my first term as a graduate student, and I don't think I could have survived had it not been for this book. It gives useful commentary, helpful hints and a terrific reference section for footnotes and bibliographies. It addresses real problems that often occur in writing an art history paper and provides insightful solutions that encourage independent thinking. It also includes a section on essay exams which gets a quick read through when I take a test.
I had several "a ha!" moments when reading it for the first time, and now I keep it within arms reach whenever I write.
The price was a little steep, so I hesitated in buying, but when I finally made the purchase I was glad that I had.
