The book came very fast with the free super saving shipping and it was new. It's a paperback book and the pages are made of a paper like newsprint (fairly cheap paper). Being around 50 bucks I didn't want to buy it but it was required and cheaper than the local bookstore.

Nakama text is very confusing. Genki or Japanese for busy people are much better if you are studying on your own. I had to buy it for college class. I wish they were using the Genki text or Yookoso text they are so much better.

There are a few problems with this workbook...which isn't to say that it doesn't have value as a text. This book has helped me learn, without a doubt. However, it isn't as user friendly as I'd like. For example, there are a number of exercises that have a picture on one side of a page, and then questions about the picture on the back. There are also exercises that end on one page, and then a new activity continues on the back. This is only a problem if your teacher/professor wants you to tear out the pages, because then you're missing the first part of your assignment.
None of these problems are critical, but it does cause a few inconveniences now and then.
Of course, I've only completed the exercises through Chapter 5, so take my comments with a grain of salt.

$50 for this book is rediculous. And unfortunatley, if you have to use Nakama 1 textbook odds are you have to have this book to go with it. It is cheap paperback with "recycled" grade paper. Think of the kind that is in little kids writing tablets you get at walmart for $1.00.
As far as the practice itself, it could be way better. Most are very brief, vague or very long and very repetative. "Fill in the blank" from a table of choices does not make your mind work to form sentences and understand placement or modifiers. Ok I get it, ~san's major is _____, so is ~san's and ~san's. Now how does that help me understand how the sentence and/or statement is created?
I find when I do these lessons, I'm not really learning anything. Its not like any "Oh, I get it now!" moments going on.
Its not completely useless though, it does help reiterate the same thing youve learned in the book over and over and over. I'll never forget yamada-sans major, I'll tell you that much. When you read the textbook, you'll know the saga of Yamadasan, Suzukisan and Alicesan.

This book is tedious and time consuming but WOW the results! I started with Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (Edwards) and then moved on to The Natural Way to Draw. Edwards book (I loved it too) explains drawing in a very logical way whereas this book takes you into "the experience of drawing". If you are serious about pursuing drawing and have the time to follow the lessons in this book on schedule... I strongly recommend it! You will be amazed at how fluid it will make your drawing. I am a perfectionist and get hung up on the details... now the pictures just flow out.
A must have

This classic drawing text belongs on the bookshelf of any artist or art educator, right next to Peck's Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist (Galaxy Books). I mention Peck's book here specifically because, like Nicolaides, it is often decried for being dated. Indeed, older works do occasionally present some problems; I have to apologize to my students for Peck's antiquated terminology in the section, "Distinctions of Race," for example. Nicolaides presents no such difficulties, but is nevertheless often regarded as too tough, too rigorous, too old fashioned.
Certainly, compared to The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: A Course in Enhancing Creativity and Artistic Confidence, which I have not used but have perused, Nicolaides asks a lot of his students: twenty-five sections, each requiring fifteen hours of work. This amounts to 125 three-hour sessions, and demands the rigorous work ethic of a Twentieth-Century, industrial era technician. The second paragraph of the section, "How To Use This Book" begins, "I assume that you are about to embark upon a year of art study..." and is meant to be taken seriously. A student who is dedicated to learning to draw, and is willing to commit him- or herself to spending three hours a day, two or three times a week, for a year in order to do so, will find no better guide I have encountered than this book. Educators will also find many exercises in this book which can be incorporated into a semester's lesson plans, and this is how I use this book.
The rigid instruction of this manual is unadulterated by unnecessary, dubious psychology, nor does it pretend to be quick and easy. Many "How to Draw" books are essentially shorthand, teaching quick tricks designed to allow a student (or hobbyist) to produce passable results in very little time, by following formulas or copying, step-by-step, from a master drawing. Nicolaides doesn't speculate into scientific or pseudoscientific topics outside his area of expertise, nor does he pretend that learning to draw, to truly draw from observation rather than imitation, can ever be quick and easy.

I'm sure this book is all that many reviewers have shared but for me,being a complete beginner, its way over my head and abilities. I need to work at an entry level and continue before I can appreciate and grasp all this author offers. I have found, The New Drawing on The Right Side of The Brain to give me this. also picked up Keys to Drawing & Secrets to Drawing REalistic Faces. Each of these selections are better suited to the level I'm at and didn't overwhelm me to take this artform on.

This book was recommended to me by a classmate who has been an art teacher for 7 years. Her copy is tattered, wrinkled and obviously well used and well loved. I ordered it to help me brainstorm units and organize my new classroom.
A lot of the 125 student projects are pretty corny but provide jumping off points for creating your own fabulous lessons. I really like some of the interdisciplinary connections Hume lists and think they will help me in collaborating with the general ed teachers in my school.
Hume also lists several educational games that can be purchased or created by you for an art classroom - what a wonderful idea for substitute days!

I was very disapointed with this book. All of the pages are photocopied in black and white. There is very low resolution on the images and an art book in black and white is worthless for most aspects of class. There were a few projects that were appropriate but it was hardly worth the investment.

It wasn't quite what we were looking for as homeschoolers. All of the pictures are in black and white and many of them are too dark to even see. I felt that some of the directions were a bit unclear. It does not say specifically what grade level each project is, but that the projects get progressivly more difficult. It does give you adaption ideas for younger students on many things. If your looking for fun, neat crafts to make in school, this probably isn't the book for you. This book does cover good topics such as basic line drawing, value, texture, etc. I feel it is a good book to have in conjuction with other art books.

I am using this book for a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. The writing is very straight forward and easy to understand. It talks about several models of leadership and how those concepts apply to Educational Administration. Each week, my class is reviewing the case studies in the book- which is interesting. They give the vignette, and ask the reader how they would solve the conflict of issue, as a leader.
Finally, the case method applied to education

This is easily one of the most thought-provoking books on education that I've had the pleasure of reading. The first half is a general exploration of leadership in the school setting, but the second half is where the book truly shines--60 different case study activities that present real-world situations that appear in the course of the school day and challenge you to solve them. I learned a lot about my leadership style and what I needed to know to become a better leader by reading through them; I think it'd be an invaluable resource for anyone in the principalship.

I've used Words Their Way for the last year and loved the strategies. This particular book gives lots more sorts for spellers in the letter name/ alphabetic spelling stage. It includes consonant blends and diagraphs as well as more short vowel sorts. These hands on materials have been a great help to me in teaching my mildly disabled elementary students, but all the regular lower grade teachers at my school are raving, and using these great strategies and materials.

I have recommended that the students in my class keep this textbook for future use. It is chock full of strategies, research to back up those strategies, book lists and classroom examples. The author gives step by step instruction on how to set up the four classroom strategies for teaching the language arts. This information is invaluable and even the most inexperienced teacher could use the book to set up a viable language arts classroom. The DVD that comes with the book allows us to see inside the classrooms of "exemplary" teachers and watch how the strategies work in the real world. Well worth the money.

Although there is a a lot of great information however, if your like me you don't have tons of time for reading through all the historical and case study information. Each section is clearly explained so it's great to just pick and choose what you are looking for.
