great book and Pals uses his creativeness to cover the major philosophers and scientists in a particular order to demonstrate intellectual evolution (intelligence evolves as time passes and we learn from previous ages) and he also brings out how the fact the philisophers (as most humans) try to "prove" THEIR experiences in life as they perceive it. The perception complicates their objectiveness. For instance, Freud was an atheist so Freud was out to prove there is no God. Freud did not want to reveal "truth" but only what HE thought was truth. Whether it is truth or not, was irrelevant to him and many others. Each philosopher builds on the previous with a critical critique of each by Pal and the others. I thought this was a great book and easy to read (unlike other philosophy books which are extremely difficult) 5 stars for Pals!

Refreshingly readable account of the major developments in the science of religion. An excellent introduction to the field for general audience.

I had to read this book for my introduction to the study of religion-class, but it turned out to be a very interesting book. Pals has a good ability to explain complex terms and theories in relatively easy language, even when dealing with quite obscure ideas and material. The purpose of the book is to give new students and interested laymen a basic overview of the eight most important theories various researchers and thinkers have put forward since the birth of the "study of religion". Late in the 1800's, we moved from a strictly theological view of religion, (in reality; Christianity and all the others) to a more comparative perspective.

The eight (really nine, but oh well) theories were put forward by the following people, that each get a chapter before the conclusion ends the book in it's last chapter; E.B. Tylor & J. G. Frazer, Sigmund Freud, Émile Durkheim, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Mircea Eliade, E. E. Evans-Pritchard and finally Clifford Geertz. Each chapter contains a small biography of the thinker, an overview of the theory and the history of it, summaries of the most important works, analysis of the material presented, critiques put forward in response, notes and finally a bibliography of suggestions for further reading.

I found the book to be very useful and interesting, and it is an excellent introduction to the field for newcomers. The book shows relatively well the madness and basically evil ideas that is represented by Marx, Freud and to some degree Durkheim. "Strangely", these very people are of the same racial background, and all their ideas have had major negative effects for gentile culture, see a connection anyone? It is a very peculiar and suspicious side to Pals that whenever a theorist is doing something good he's a Jew, but when his ideas are bad for European cohesion, he's "a German" or a "Frenchman". This way, suddenly Freud, Boas and various others in the books are suddenly just your average Fritz German doing objective research with no political consequences. A volume that should be read along with this book is Kevin Macdonald's book "The Culture of Critique", available here on Amazon.

The two scientists that are most filled with genius in this book seems to me to be Mircea Eliade and Max Weber, the first one interestingly enough being friends with two major European freedom fighters; Corneliu Codreanu and Julius Evola. Eliade was actually a member of Codreanu's organization back in his native Rumania, something that should give you a good hint of his honourable soul.

To summarize; a sturdy hardcover book that gives you a highly valuable introduction to the field and that should be of interest to anyone remotely interested in politics, philosophy or religion.

Highly recommended!

I actually needed this book for my Introduction to Religion class but I'm sure I will keep it even after I am finished with the class. Pals breaks down the theories into their simpliest forms and makes them so easy to understand. He summaries each theorist's section with an analysis and a critique which makes the interpretation of the text that much easier. This is a wonderful book and I would suggest it to anyone looking for possible explanations of some of the world's most popular religions...

I am an international student who just arrived America two months ago but still need to take SAT tests. It is very hard for me at first because my vocabulary bank is not broad enough to deal with the critical reading section. I did poorly in the practice tests. However, after I had finished reading this book, everything changed. I knew a lot more vocabularies and I could understand the passages more clearly. Moreover, it was a good first step for me before I began studying more advanced vocabularies. However, the only problem for this book is that the vocabularies are not advanced enough. You can't deal with the vocabulary section and understand the whole passage by knowing only vocabularies from this book. Therefore, I suggest that you read this book quickly and then start reading other vocabulary book such as Word Smart. It will help you a lot.
I won't recommend international students to start at Word Smart because it's too hard if you don't know some advanced vocabularies. You will be intimidated. But for Native speakers, you can skip this book.

I am a mom with a 10 year old who is begging to study SAT words. (Don't ask why...she just really wants to learn them) I saw this book being used by the 10th graders at the local private school and I was very impressed. The organization of words into groups with similar meanings is fabulous. It really helps you to talk about those "shades of meaning" that you get with different word choices. Of course, these are not the most difficult of the SAT words, but I think it is perfect for the average to above average student. The highly gifted child who is taking the SAT as a senior should probably know the majority of these words already, but for most students I think it is perfect.

HERE IS THE TRUE SECRET to the vocab section. Go through the entire 10 test prep book and underline each and every word that you do not know. (The college board book with the cheap grey paper, costs about 20 bucks). Then make 3x5 cards. By the time you have gone through all 10 sample tests, you will know all the vocab you need to know. This is how my 12 year old got a 750 on the verbal last year.

Popular Book, Reliable Concept, Some Mistakes

Review Date: 2006-11-13
I am a full time SAT tutor and have almost all my students study this book. It is perhaps the most popular book of its kind, and for good reason-- Carnevale's effective approach to acquiring new SAT words. She presents words by theme. For example, the first chapter's theme, Cat Got Your Tongue? presents "Words Relating to Using Few Words or Being Quiet." They are: brevity, concise, laconic, pithy, quiescent, reticent, succinct, taciturn, and terse. I find that studying words in categories, as presented in this book, is an effective way for students to (1) learn more words and (2) internalize the sometimes subtle differences between synonyms. The book also has several sentences for each word to illustrate the word's proper context.
On the other hand, there are several mistakes in the book. For example, the introduction refers to the books approach as yielding, "expoential vocabulary growth" (the "n" in "exponential" is missing). In chapter 9, the book says correct use of "miserly" is "Using a sheet of paper on only one side is a sign of a miserly individual."
These mistakes take away only slightly from the book's value since the concept is so solid and the words appear so often on tests.

There are a few problems with this workbook...which isn't to say that it doesn't have value as a text. This book has helped me learn, without a doubt. However, it isn't as user friendly as I'd like. For example, there are a number of exercises that have a picture on one side of a page, and then questions about the picture on the back. There are also exercises that end on one page, and then a new activity continues on the back. This is only a problem if your teacher/professor wants you to tear out the pages, because then you're missing the first part of your assignment.

None of these problems are critical, but it does cause a few inconveniences now and then.

Of course, I've only completed the exercises through Chapter 5, so take my comments with a grain of salt.

Can you say "ne o fukikakeru"????

$50 for this book is rediculous. And unfortunatley, if you have to use Nakama 1 textbook odds are you have to have this book to go with it. It is cheap paperback with "recycled" grade paper. Think of the kind that is in little kids writing tablets you get at walmart for $1.00.
As far as the practice itself, it could be way better. Most are very brief, vague or very long and very repetative. "Fill in the blank" from a table of choices does not make your mind work to form sentences and understand placement or modifiers. Ok I get it, ~san's major is _____, so is ~san's and ~san's. Now how does that help me understand how the sentence and/or statement is created?
I find when I do these lessons, I'm not really learning anything. Its not like any "Oh, I get it now!" moments going on.
Its not completely useless though, it does help reiterate the same thing youve learned in the book over and over and over. I'll never forget yamada-sans major, I'll tell you that much. When you read the textbook, you'll know the saga of Yamadasan, Suzukisan and Alicesan.

This workbook is an excellent expansion of what is learned in the Destinos Student Edition text. At the time I ordered the workbook and text, I thought I would be receiving the CDs that are referred to in the workbook. These were not included. It should be made clearly that CDs for the text are different from the workbook. It should also be made clear that the CDs for the workbook have to be purchased separately.

I use the Workbook / Study Guide Volume I (covers episodes 1-26) with the "Second Edition of the Alternate Edition" textbook (ISBN 0-07-252536-3) and the Destinos video series . It supplements and expands the exercises in the textbook . The additional exercises are helpful in the learning process. For me, it is a MUST to have this Workbook / Study Guide. That being said, this Workbook / Study Guide is difficult because it requires more time, more work, more discipline, more focus, more thinking, more everything. If you don't have that extra "more," I strongly suggest that you NOT buy this Workbook / Study Guide.

If you buy the Workbook / Study Guide, you will need to separately buy a set of audio CDs or audiocassettes. You can't do the exercises in the Workbook / Study Guide without the audio CDs or audiocassettes. The additional audio CDs and audio cassettes are:

Destinos Audio Cassette Program Part 1 (episodes 1-26) - ISBN 0072504404

Destinos Audio CD Program Part 1 (episodes 1-26) ISBN 0072504382

Again, you NEED to buy the audio cassettes or the CDs to accompany the Workbook / Study Guide. Be sure to reference the ISBN numbers to make sure you purchase the right one!

I would not recommend buying a used Workbook / Study Guide. The exercise answers and self-tests will have been completed - right or wrong - and that's not helpful to you.

I teach a university course based on this textbook and I really like it. It is full of mathematics that students can apply readily to everyday situations, without being heavily computational. The problem sets are relevant to the chapter text. Also, the problem sets are divided into three categories ("walking", "jogging", and "running") based on the level of thought that must go into them. The four chapters on statistics and probability are not quite what I'd like them to be, because in my opinion they cover too much statistical ground in hardly any depth. They would be better if they just did some basic statistics and didn't try to get students at this level into normal curves and standard deviations and all that. My students are particularly fond of the graph theory unit (chapters 5-8). In fact, their only complaint of the book so far is the high price.

Wise, compassionate help for parents
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 31 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-24
This book brings the Bible into the parents' lives in a fresh way. It is one thing to say that parents must use the Bible for parenting. It is another thing to show how that is actually done. Instructing a Child's Heart provides practical, real life instruction on how to do just that. Tedd and Margy Tripp understand that the call of Deuteronomy 6 is to instruct children in the context of everyday life. Such instruction is formative by nature. This formative instruction avoids the quicksand of attempting to change behavior without addressing the heart. Simply changing behavior, without addressing heart change, leads to more behavioral problems, which in turn leads to frustration for both parents and children. Instructing a Child's Heart leads you out of this parenting quicksand to solid ground.

The book is organized in 3 sections:
The Call to Formative Instruction
Introduction to Formative Instruction
Application of Formative Instruction

You will find practical examples and illustrations of how the Bible leads you to address the heart in parenting. As the Tripps say "Discipline is not an opportunity to show our children who is boss or to hand out punishments that will change their behavior... discipline is primarily an opportunity to remind our children of their need to repent and believe in Christ ...." (167). This book provides wise, compassionate direction to help parents bring the riches of Christ to their children. You can trust the biblical content of this book to help you live for the glory of God as you lead your family.

Well Worth the Long Wait

Review Date: 2008-04-01
Instructing a Child's Heart has been a long time coming. It was thirteen years ago that its predecessor, Shepherding a Child's Heart, was published. It was thirteen years ago that Tedd Tripp published his last book. It was no lost on me that many of the book's lessons and anecdotes now focus on the author's grandchildren. Thirteen years is a long time by any measure!

Instructing a Child's Heart is a book that focuses on "formative instruction," a term that begs further definition. Tripp describes it most simply as "teaching that `forms' our children." It is teaching that "enables them to root life in God's revelation in the Bible. It provides a culture for our children, a culture that is distinctly Christian. It shows our children the glory and dignity of mankind as God's image bearers. It provides a way of interpreting life through the redemptive story of God, who reconciles people to himself." Formative instruction is instruction that comes before problems arise and in that way is different from corrective discipline which follows problems. We form our children by interpreting life for them and responding to its challenges in biblical ways. We form them through the daily discipline of family worship and through spending time deliberately together, but also through reacting properly to the situations life brings unexpectedly. The goal of this formative instruction is, in accordance with Deuteronomy 6, "so that we and our children and our grandchildren may fair the Lord and walk in his ways, enjoying a long life." We help our children construct a worldview that allows them to properly see God for who he is and to properly see them as His creation.

The book falls into three sections. In the first Tripp introduces the reader to formative instruction, looking at the concept through a wide lens. In the second section he zeros in on the more specific topics that form the true substance of formative instruction. And in the third section he focuses on applying formative instruction in very practical ways.

It is the second section that is the heart of the book. Here, over the course of eight chapters, Tripp describes several essential building blocks of a biblical worldview. He dedicates attention to the heart, the principle of sowing and reaping, God's plan for authority, the glory of God, wisdom and foolishness, how we are complete in Christ, and the importance of the church. Each of these receives a chapter, or close to a chapter, in which he describes the principle and how it is foundational to building a biblical worldview. Having done that, he turns his attention to four of these, giving practical pointers on how to get from behavior to the heart, how to apply the sowing and reaping principle of Scripture to corrective discipline, communication with children and the centrality of the gospel.

The strength of this book, like Shepherding a Child's Heart before it, and the message I need to hear again and again, is Tripp's insistence, his constant exhortation, that parents must look beyond behavior and look primarily to the heart. It is far too simple to create little legalists, children who adhere to the letter of law, all the while defying the spirit of the law and the One who gives us laws in the first place. It is more difficult but far more profitable to look to the heart for it is the heart that is the wellspring of all behavior. The heart is the heart of all effective instruction. But where the focus of Shepherding was turning the emphasis from outward obedience to matters of the heart, the focus of Instructing is on building into a child's heart a worldview that is biblical enough and sufficiently robust to stand up to their questioning and to the culture's skepticism. The task of parenting, after all, involves showing our children "the vital connection between the powerful story of redemption in the Scriptures and their daily experience. The instruction we give them will only make sense in the context of the story of the Scriptures that tells them who they are and about the God who made them and offers them redemption."

Like most books on parenting, this one is filled with moments that are at the same time obvious and profound. You will encounter statements that are so obvious you wonder if they really needed to be said, only to realize that you could have used that bit of wisdom only moments ago. While muttering, "Well, duh!" you'll also feel twinges of shame and regret. This is a book that is immediately applicable both to parents and to their children. It is a book that turns to the Bible to provide God's wisdom on how we can be effective parents. "Your greatest need," says Tripp, "is to understand deep truths from the Bible. Solid parenting skills are built on solid truth."

This is not a book that tells you how to control or manipulate your children so that they will spend their lives living in an irrational fear of a domineering parent or a hostile deity. Instead, it is a book that teaches parents to gently but consistently build into children a worldview that begins with the heart and that focuses on God and on His glory. "We should impress truth of the hearts of our children, not to control or manage them, but to point them to the greatest joy and happiness that they can experience--delighting in God and the goodness of his ways."

We've waited a long time for the follow-up to Shepherding a Child's Heart. I believe most parents will feel the wait has been well worth it.

This is an excellent resource. The photography is incredible. The educational value exceptional. It has pictures and text with skeletal overlays for parts of the body - skull, spine, arms, torso, hip/thigh, feet and hands.

My ONLY complaint is that this - like almost all model books - does not provide various body types nor does it represent enough ethnic groups.

Great pictures and illustrations.

It's a really nice book. It has some amazing illustrations and photos in it and many of the illustrations are overlays that go right over the photo allowing you to further understand the relationship. It has been tremendously helpful in my figure drawing.
