For journalists, the AP style guides are pretty much the gold standard (or silver, depending on your economic policy leanings).
With so much terrible grammar and punctuation, and often lack of punctuation, present in today's world, this is a must-have
for aspiring writers, especially journalists.

There's no mystery here, and it's not intended to be a grammatically pristene work of art. It is, after all, a 96-page reference
manual. If you are used to writing/editing literary and academic styles and need to refresh your memory on the punctuation
variables in journalistic writing, this is an easy point-to reference that won't take up any more of your precious time than
absolutely necessary.

It appears that some fool edited the cautionary examples for correctness. (p. 34) The grammar is poor ("verboten" as a noun?
(p. 85)), and the usage is non-standard (Commas are "trundled out"? (p.37)). Some passages are self-contradictory ("With
Adjectives, p. 37).
This book is not a total disaster, but I can hardly recommend it.

I am impressed by the organization of this phonological awareness program. I have just started using it with Kindergarten
children who need more help developing PA. They love the game-like, quick exercises and are learning the difference between
a sound and a letter name. I use a dolphin puppet for Fix-it which the children look forward to seeing every time we meet.

I am the parent of a 9 yo 3rd grader, recently diagnosed as dyslexic. Unable to get appropriate help from the school district,
I have a tutor I am working with who suggested I use Road to the Code to help with phonemic awareness. It was very easy to
follow and I was surprised how much my older child actually enjoyed the games. He recently finished the last lesson as has
made significant progress with his short vowel sounds and letter recognition. He is also beginning to understand there is
a logical "code" to attack words with. There is practically no skipping around a paragraph, looking for a "clue", like he
was doing prior to this instruction. Now that he is on to more advanced curriculum, he sometimes asks to do some of the "Road
to the Code" exercises for fun. I will definately use this program with my (non-dyslexic) kindergartener. The use of only
the 8 most frequently used letters, the repetition, and variety of exercises are highly effective and simple. All materials
are very low cost and easy to make. I wish they would have used this for him in kindergarten!!!!!

I am a Reading Specialist and certified Reading Recovery teacher. I find this to be an excellent resource for helping Kinder.
and beginning 1st graders (can move at a faster pace) develop phonemic awareness. I use this 4 days a week with a group of
three 1st graders who have been identified to be most at-risk for reading failure (NOTE: I did NOT use DIEBELS to assess.
DIEBELS only screens and it's scores are based solely on the speed in which a child can supply answers. Not enough information
if you want to teach children to recognize their strengths and become strategic readers and writers. In fact, DIEBELS does
not even consider a child's ability to encode words onto a page. I got all the info I needed from Marie Clay's Observation
Survey, CLEF, last year's teacher, and current classroom teacher).
We begin our time together with Road to the Code and then move into some quick "extensions/reviews" (hands-on activities, phonem. aware. based songs or poems, etc.), followed by a guided reading lesson that is Reading Recovery based (this of course includes independent and share-the-pen writing). This gives the children an authenic opportunity to apply what's been learned in Rode to the Code.
It is very well organized and these ladies REALLY know what they are "talking" about!

This workbook was recommended to accompany the most recent edition of my Spanish Textbook (which I also ordered from Amazon).
My professor required that we purchase the workbook, however the one Amazon recommended was not the correct workbook edition.
I had to go through a lot of trouble and wasted a great amount of time and money by returning the books to Amazon and having
to purchase them in a package from my local textbook store.

PREGO! : visually-stimulating 7th edition has online learning center

PREGO! is an excellent and very popular classroom introductory Italian program, here in its 7th incarnation. Lazzarino and
coauthors have created a beautiful, easy-on-the eyes layout with interesting cultural readings, charming illustrations, and
cute (topic related) cartoons. It's great to see different ethnicities represented in the illustrations (a trend that many
publishers seem to be following -- it's about time!).
I began my studies with an early edition of PREGO! and have a fondness for this 2-semester program. I've looked at many other introductory Italian language textbooks and I believe PREGO! remains a best-seller because it provides a fun and attractive approach to rigorous grammar study. It appears to me to be the most polished and visually stimulating textbook on the market, with updated cultural scenarios (including the increasingly multicultural Italian demographic).
The supplemental DVD follows an "American" journalist in Italy and his Italian friend through chapter-related scenarios. It is a well-produced and entertaining enough and provides an opportunity for listening comprehension (with optional Italian subtitles -- better, I believe, in aiding Italian study than having English subtitles).
Students will likely get the most bang out of these materials in a formal study (classroom or tutor) setting. Those who can easily afford these (relatively expensive) materials might want to purchase them simply for a good workout.
You can visit the mhhe site (i.e. McGraw-Hill Higher Education -- I can't post the link) to see a sample chapter (Capitolo 1) and check out the audio files and exercises, etc. Here are the correct ISBN's (from the mhhe site) should you want to order these supplements: Workbook (0073266760) Workbook to accompany Prego! An Invitation to Italian; Laboratory Manual (0073266698) Laboratory Manual to accompany Prego! An Invitation to Italian; Audio CD Program, Part A (Audio CD Program (Part A) to accompany Prego! An Invitation to Italian (7th ed.)); Audio CD Program, Part B (0073266647) Audio CDs (Part B) to accompany Prego! An Invitation to Italian (7th ed.); DVD (DVD to accompany Prego! An Invitation to Italian)
You don't need to purchase the (expensive) audio CDs as the sound files are available at the online learning center for Prego7, though some may choose to as they feel more comfortable with CDs in hand. I believe you have to pay for access to the online workbook and lab manual if you choose not to purchase the print versions.
N.B. the "buy together" links don't always link the correct editions of supplementary materials, so use the advanced book search or advanced DVD search to choose the proper materials (if edition is listed correctly) to load into your shopping cart. I've inserted links to the correct supplements above.
Also available: AVANTI! by Janice Aski, et al, is a more communicative approach, introductory Italian language program from McGraw-Hill. Avanti!'s emphasis is on repetition. There is much of value in both of these programs. Avanti! is also somewhat expensive and should also be used with other students with an instructor and/or tutor. Avanti: Beginning Italian Student Edition with Bind-in passcode
Those who cannot attend a college course might fare better with the purchase of any number of text + audio programs or all-audio programs (Living Language, etc.) and inexpensive grammar workbooks.
One of the most beautiful countries on Earth is waiting for you -- and your experience will be so much richer with Italian language skills. Please don't be turned off by the fact that acquiring advanced language skills is for most a long-term endeavor. I believe those new to the experience will find the "discipline" of language study to be its own reward (see FLOW by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience And note that some of the non-native speakers I know that have gained the richest knowledge of Italian history and culture in their travels speak (they're the first to acknowledge this) very exaggerated English-accented Italian. They laugh at themselves and continue to enjoy their new experiences as they know that a goofy accent DOESN'T MATTER! (It's often charming.) Grammatical errors? Who cares! Stumble out there and don't cheat yourself out of a rich new experience!

My son, who is not really interested in Language Arts, but is good at it, got very interested in this book. He would ask
to do vocabulary and more vocabulary.
This book makes learning vocabulary fun even though it's through repetition. Each lesson contains many pages of the same words but in different ways and it gets kids into vocabulary and learning new words happily!
I highly recommend this book!

I learned about this book from Beestar online vocabulary program for kids. Vocabulary is the foundation for good reading and
writing. Many smart kids don't do well in reading because of limited vocabulary. Unlike some other skills, a good vocabulary
cannot be achieved quickly. Young students need to learn and read extensively to snowball their words. This book is a great
help. It gives thorough practice through the use of synonyms, antonyms, compound words, homophones, homographs, plurals, etc.,
to ensure that your child will learn the meanings of the words used in each section. Through a variety of exercises that vary
within and between each section, a child will become familiar with not only the word's meaning, but also the meaning of each
type of word (i.e., synonym, homophone, etc). Little by little, this book built the word power for my child without stressing.
Now his reading level is at the top of his class. His confidence is high. This book is an excellent tool for after-school
enrichment.

I agree with on of the other reviewers that the Genki textbook just does not have enough examples or in-depth / creative discussions
of grammar. So when you then go to the workbook, it's kind of a baptism by fire into putting the rather anemic lessons to
some use.
Another issue is that you will need the answer key to this workbook if you self-study. That is also around $20. Unfortunately, all of the answers are written in that book exclusively in kanji, which of course is not taught until the very end of the first textbook. So, when "grading" your exercises it will be a constant flipping between not only the workbook and the answer key, but the relevant textbook page itself. Which is all the more frustrating because there is minimal benefit to kanj-correction if one has not specifically been including this in the curriculum.
Another 20% of this workbook will not be of use to you unless you purchase the multi-CD listening comprehension set which is around $225! I'd opt for the less expensive 2-disc set that sources the textbook (and not this workbook) exclusively.
Lastly, I also have to laugh at one of the other reviewers who credits her "perfect" Japanese with the Genki series. Nothing could be further from the truth; one does not even begin to understand the myriad of honorifics of the language, not to mention how to speak in anything other than what might be considered ELEMENTARY, textbook Japanese. Hence, the title.

Japanese is a very difficult language for English speakers to learn. If you've learned some French or Spanish (as I have),
forget about it! Japanese is many times more difficult. That being said, Japanese is also more interesting, in that it has
a completely different structure and forces you to think differently.
Genki does a good job of presenting Japanese is an orderly fashion. The authors are all native Japanese speakers, and there are a few places where they make mistakes in English, but those small errors do not take away from the text.
Genki could use a few more sample Japanese sentences, though. For example, when they present a new pattern, they often provide just a couple of examples when ten or twelve would be better. I suppose they assume (correctly) that this book will mostly be used in a classroom setting, and that the teacher will provide additional material.
In the end, Genki is a good textbook, but you will need more help if you are going to learn to speak Japanese. That is not the fault of the authors, it is just the way it is.

I used this workbook in my first year Japanese class in college. It complements the textbook wonderfully. The lessons are
taught in a way that makes it easy to remember what you learn. This series has a rather engaging story about a girl studying
in Japan, which makes it both entertaining and fun to learn Japanese. I accredit my now perfect Japanese to the Genki series.
It kept me interested and motivated, while teaching me a lot. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn Japanese!

This book was exactly what I needed. I haven't taken the test yet, but it's a great resource for studying and I have confidence
that it will help give me at least a basic idea of what to expect. Shipped quickly. I'm very satisfied.

This book is accessible and covers much of the exam material in the depth you need to know it. However, it glosses over plant
biology (a very major component of the exam) as well as much of the animal physiology and evolution material it contains.
It was very frustrating on exam day to see all kinds of information not covered in this book -- and I'm not talking specifics
here but GENERAL CONCEPTS. If your undergraduate biology study was more focused (i.e. you haven't had development or plant
bio or physiology or evolution or cell bio), you're probably better off taking an in-depth review of the Campbell general
biology textbook (an older edition of which I'm sure you could get cheaply and not feel bad marking up). Also, if inconsistent
diagrams and lapses in text editing aren't really your cup of tea, this book might not be for you.

After taking the exam in December 2006, you would be better off buying and reviewing the latest version of Campbell Reece
'Biology' textbook to study for the GRE Biology Exam. This Kaplan book needs a revision as it is misrepresenting a lot of
the information that was presented on the exam.
I would say that this book is good reference for a high school biology teacher.

This is one of the best GRE subject books for any person trying to score high on the GRE exam in Biology. It covers everything
you need to know in detail. The illustrations, the diagrams, the graphs, the charts, are all very helpful too. They even
show you some basic math to help you understand everything better and for it to make sense for you. It has three sections
Cellular and Molecular Biology, Organismal Biology, and Ecology and Evolution. I could not put it down it was so helpful and
I understood everything that they wrote down. This book is very specific and as mentioned above and thorougly explains everything
without you saying this is too much. There are about 14-15 practice questions at the end of each section and the answers are
explained fully. The end of the book there are 200 questions that cover everything that you read in the book and the answers
are again fully explained at the end. I am not a good multiple choice test taker but after reading about 10 pages on a certain
topic I answered the question correctly at the end. I highly recommend this book you will definately score higher on the GRE
subject. Even if you are not a good test taker you will most likely get a higher score! The book might I add is interesting
to read too and is very thought provoking.

You might as well buy any version you want for a test you will take soon, but I did find this book very helpful for reviewing
without much time to do so. The situation will change when the test goes electronic, however. In that case the old versions
will likely be obsolete.
