I really enjoyed reading this book. I even brought it to the beach with me. I found it helpful and easy to read. It gave me ideas and tips for starting the year right. I found myself able to integrate what I learned from this book with other courses I've taken. I read it and felt invigorated and excited about beginning the year. I look forward to applying more of what I've learned as the year continues. I definitely recommend this book!

This is the first book I have purchased for a class that I felt was of benefit to me (and I've taken a lot of classes). It has great ideas and half of the book is filled with sample tools that you can use in your own classroom. This book is great for someone who is just starting out with differentiated instruction and even has ideas a senior teacher hasn't thought of yet!

If you are interested in differentiation, and meeting the needs of individual students, then this book is for you. It focuses more than the other differentiation books by Carol on the affective component of the classroom. How do we meet students where they are and understand where they are coming from?
This book emphasizes both teaching students and especially learning from them.
Whether this matches your philosophy or challenges your ideas, you will find this book helps you in your teaching career. Carol is my adviser, and if you get the chance to see her speak, definitely do it. You should read The Differentiated Classroom for more about academic curriculum.

Excellent for Teacher Leaders and Administrators to Lead Change

This IS a book about pedagogy. Focused on the philosophy and structuring of Differentiated Instruction, Carol Tomlinson commented that this should have been her first book on Differentiation. The anecdotes and real world examples clarify theory into practice. DI is presented within the context of quality instructional planning considerations. Highly recommended for Teacher Leaders and administrators to become the in-house support for their district and buildings. A variety of strategies with examples are provided in the appendix. I found it helpful with some of the book studies I've lead for districts and schools.

If you're looking for the larger picture of the what and how of DI fits into curriculum, and why students respond as they do to instruction, this book is a perfect fit, especially if you have had some (minimal at least) background with DI in lesson planning. Otherwise, consider How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed-Ability Classrooms by Tomlinson. It's an excellent primer someone looking for basic, basic understanding and where to begin the journey. In fact, get both books if you are just starting out. Fufilling the Promise appendices of strategies is one of the best available as it included classroom examples. Welcome to Differentiated Instruction. Students will gain greater benefits from your efforts.

This book provides a comprehensive view into the workings of the differentiated classroom. Dr. Tomlinson presents the vital theoretical underpinnings of differentiation, but pairs them with real world vignettes and strategies. This combination helps the reader understand the importance of tailoring instruction to meet students' needs, but also empowers the reader with a sense of "being equipped" with real-school-world tools to help them begin the reconstruction process.

I purchased this title at Walmart for under $4 to keep my daughter busy while my older children are doing their schoolwork. She likes it quite a bit. If I was just rating it based on value and her opinion it would be 4.5... But I would like some color- not just black and white. Overall it is a great value. :)

I purchased a copy of this book at Walmart for our 4 year old to use in our homeschool. The title of the book says it all! It has everything for early learning preschool! This is a complete pre K program in one book. The book is made up of five chapters: Basic Concepts, Mathematics Readiness, Numbers 0-10, Reading Readiness, Letters and Sounds. The book contains coloring as well as cut and paste activites that are fun! It is 320 pages including achievement stickers to use as rewards for a job well done. We utilize this book as the "worktext" for our literature based pre K program.
Our child preferred this hands down to the "Developing the Early Learner Books" which came with our pre K program.

This book is a college textbook for me, but because our state requires all early childhood centers to use this curriculum, I am keeping this book. It has great ideas on how to stop children from biting, to how to get children more involved in the activity centers that you plan daily. If you need a nice comprehensive resource this is definitely one you want to look into.

Dodge, Colker, and Heroman present this updated version of the well-known program that focuses all aspects of the early childhood classroom around the environment, what the child learns, the family, the teacher's role, and developmental theory in its famed interlocking pentagon.

Not only does the text explain each segment of the conceptual framework in painstaking detail, but a reference list of both primary and secondary sources sits at the end of each chapter.

Please make sure that you get the Creative Curriculum Toolbox (which includes this book) in order to completely implement this curriculum in the classroom.

Since play forms the foundation of this curriculum, I doubt a school/community will accept it as valid if they view education from a direct instruction viewpoint.

This curriculum book manages to cram as much information into its 530 pages as possible. It starts with an overview of child development in chapter one, entitled "How Children Deveop and Learn". Chapter one also introduces and explains what I consider the most exciting aspect of the Creative Curriculum program- the developmental continuum as a tool for tracking children's progress and identifying areas for the program to focus attention. The continuum states a program goal, let's say "knowledge of the alphabet" and then proceeds to state specific examples to help teachers assess how far a child has acheived in meeting that goal, ranging from forerunner skills (child points out that there are letters on their cubby and those letters mean this is the child's cubby) and listing 2 more examples of growing understanding, then ending with a high (for preschool) level of understanding (makes sound-letter connections and demonstrates it by writing a D on a picture they state they want to give to dad). The Creative Curriculum continuum has 50 stated goals coverng all domains of development. I find this tool extremely helpful in general program planning, individualization to meet specific needs of a specific child, and in communicating with parents.

The book also has informative chapters regarding setting up the classroom environment and the family-school partnership. This book continues with a chapter on each learning center typically found in an ECE classroom such as the book corner, blocks, and water table. It states items found in that area with suggestions on how to use them and highligting what content areas (literacy, math skills, social skills, etc.)are addressed. The other thing I am also particularly pleased with this book is how it repeatedly reinforces how Early Childhood Educators assist children in furthering their understanding through teacher-child discussions, teacher modeling, and posing open questions such as "I wonder what will happen if you...?" Children are not just left to their own devises in a "safe and interesting environment." The majority of learning occurs with people interacting with each other.

I even find the planning forms helpful, and I usually prefer to make up my own things like that.

Overall, a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate approach to teaching small children. Highly Recommended.

This was a required text for a MBA management class I was taking. While I enjoyed the class, the book itself was disappointing, and even the authors point out that many of the surveys and self-analysis tools are limited because the better tools are all proprietary. Most of the book is a re-hash of standard managment philosophy, with some statistical justification thrown in.
If you are looking to improve your management skills, I recommend going straight to the primary sources, which includes most of Stephen Covey's books, along with other management and self-improvement books like Emotional Intelligence, Execution, One-Minute Manager, etc. This book tries to cover the same ground, but ends up being far less informative or interesting then the popular management books it emulates.

No matter how long you have been married, you must always remember that God comes first. This book reminds us that a healthy, Godly marriage works in this order: 1)God, 2) Marriage 3) Self 4) Children 5) All Else. Without Him, a marriage is doomed. This book has allowed me and my Wife to address minor and major issues using God's direction. This is actually a second publishing, with the first being mostly secular. The authors have taken scripture and make it very clear that God wants marriage to be Spirirtually based. No matter what issue you may be having in your marriage, using God's directives can heal all wounds - past and present. As a Chaplain and a Counselor, I have found this to be the ultimate guide to healing a realtionship. I now recommend this book to all my clients, regardless of their religious beliefs. It provides scripture as an adjunct to the core message of each topic, and is very easy to follow. The authors have written it so that one may read a section regarding their specific problem, or it can be read in the order it was written. If you are yearning to have a Godly marriage - THIS IS THE MANUAL YOU NEED. Peace and God Be With You.

A must read for any math teacher or parent of a math student!

There is a better way to teach math
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-02
We all agree that in a global economy, mathematical skill is of increasing importance. So what would be the characteristics of an ideal math education program?

How about:
1. Students perform well on standardized tests

2. Students come to appreciate math rather than hide under the bed at the mention of the word.

3. Students of mixed abilities come to respect each other's strengths and work together on solutions

4. Students readily apply their problem solving skills to problems outside the classroom

Wishful thinking? Jo Boaler's research says otherwise. Children are born with an appreciation of math. It is not necessary to create an interest, merely to keep from doing what traditional teaching methods do - turning the students away from math. Students enjoy being challenged and being told the explanations behind the formulas. If they do what they enjoy and understand it, then it should come as no surprise that they will perform better.

If you have any interest in either mathematics or education, I urge you to read this book. We owe it to our children to reform the way we teach math.

What every parent, educator and administrator needs to know about reaching students in math
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-10
I feel this book needs to be in the hands of every educator and administrator who is looking for ways to improve math instruction. This book has opened my eyes in a very common sense approach about where our math instruction energy needs to be focused. I am an educator and a homeschooling parent. I needed some answers this year about how to reach the families I help who homeschool, my administration (who is looking for math instruction answers for struggling students), and my daughter who in the area of math doesn't seem to have the ability to remember math from year to year, it just doesn't stick.

This book contains not only a philosophy about math instruction which gave me the base of why one should approach math this way, but it also gives you the tools you need to initiate this type of teaching within your home or school. Ms. Boaler gives you lessons to get you started, titles of books to continue your pursuit, and the passion to invigorate your quest.

I am a homeschooling mom, who has a daughter that struggles in math instruction and a son who flourishes in math. We began the year in math and there were tears and crying, "I can't do it!" and I am looking at her thinking, we did this last year - why aren't these concepts sticking. Ms. Boaler gave me a common sense answer and a rejuvination by reminding me, it isn't just the curriculum you use, although that is vitally important, but the teacher is paramount. I needed that.

I believe if you or your child is struggling with math instruction in the school or in the home, this book can give you the tools you need to turn your students around.

No need to repeat the reviews above; I agree with them all. As a university professor of mathematics education who has grave concerns about the state of mathematics education in the US, I was thrilled to see this book. "What's Math..." covers a lot of ground, painting the math-education landscape, exposing the ugliness of the Math Wars, offering pictures of promising teaching practices, and suggesting ways educators and parents can take action. Yet Dr. Boaler does this all in one short book that is easy and entertaining to read and highly accessible to educators and non-educators alike. I believe two key audiences for this book are parents and school administrators, who both have considerable power over how and what mathematics is taught in schools and who could benefit from the big-picture view this book provides. My sincere hope is that this book finds its way to both audiences.

I agree with the reviewers above...this is a page-turner! I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been searching for the ways and means to help our children truly learn mathematics. I am a middle school math educator in the process of expanding my problem-centered mathematics classroom and I found Dr. Jo Boaler's book extremely valuable. It includes thorough explanations, based on years of research, of the value of problem-centered instruction and instructional concepts to help ALL children learn mathematics. Portions of the book are written for educators and other portions for parents but I found the entire book useful for me as an educator. I will be implementing many of her ideas in my own classroom. If you are interested in how our children truly learn mathematics and how you can help them understand math more deeply I encourage to add this book to your collection.

This was course material for my course in Ed Psych as part of my Bachelors degree. Prejudice made me think it would be boring and uneventful. On the contrary I have found that it is well written, with clear examples and continuous and consistent internal referencing and clear examples. Mr. Slavin refers to "intentional teaching" throughout the text. The text and its setup has been cleverly pegged to this theory, leaving me with a thorough understanding of educational psychology for a starter in the field. This should be obligatory reading for any teacher, if not the ones I have had over the years who could have done myself and other students a favour by studying it before standing in front of a classroom.

This was a text book for my now completed first education class, "The Diverse Classroom". We did not have to read the entire book, just Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 12, so I base my review on those chapers. This book is rich in detail on the challenges faced in contemporary classrooms. It is well written, and has very complete and thorough references. In addition to raising awareness of key issues, it provides many practical suggestions for application.

The other text book for the class was "Introduction to the Foundations of American Education" by James A. Johnson, et al. That book was not as good by comparison; it was much too preachy.

Great cards, but what happened to the Mneumonics?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-24
On the White Rabbit Kana cards, they provide nifty mneumonics for each of the symbols. (These are memory devices to help you remember the symbol). While the features of the Kanji cards are nice, mneumonics would have *really* been useful. If the Tuttle--or any other brand--have mneumonics, I suggest you give them a look. The mneumonics on the White Rabbit Kana cards had a *significant* impact on my ability to memorize them.

To compensate, I have Tuttle's "Remembering the Japanese Characters" (or something like that--I may have misremembered the title), which I strongly recommend. For each character they provide a breif historical analysis and mneumonic. I use Tuttle's book to learn the symbols and the cards to practice. The only headache is that the book and the cards are not in the same order--White Rabbit uses the JPT ordering while Tuttle uses the ordering taught in Japanese elementary school--so I have to order the cards myself.

Still a good product and I'm happy with it.

Complete, perfect. The cards are great, very easy to use. You will see how easy they are when you take them with you all the day long. Waiting at the post office, at the supermarket, at the bank, everywhere will be the right moment to study!
The only thing I didn't like so much is that sometimes you can find compounds that are really *weird* and maybe also Japanese people don't know them :D

As good as flashcards can be, but flashcards nonetheless.

Review Date: 2008-07-24
I am not convinced that this is the best way to learn kanji. I think you are better off just following your textbook and slowly you will begin to recognize them in context. The problem is, if you try to strictly memorize each and everyone you might just find that you are chasing your own tail round and round.

Also, In 2008 there are programs available that will interactively introduce you to, and drill you on kanji. Instead of staring down at a deck of cards and constantly rearranging them etc. it does all of this work for you and lets you focus on drilling. Take that for what it's worth.

I also think you can cover more ground by making your own vocabulary lists; one column for the Japanese, one column for your own language, and cover up one column or another. I know you lose some of the randomness that flashcards give you but once again, I think this is overrated as word processors can easily rearrange information -- and of course you will be reinforcing your learning by doing that very thing. Similarly, most any busy-work that the flashcard company has done for you you would have been better off doing yourself, for that in itself is a big learning aid.

I have used many different books, websites, and cards in my quest to learn Kanji, and this set of cards are by far the best I have come across. The cards themselves are very well made, with a plastic coating that has so far proven impervious to wear and tear.

This set has all of the Kanji required for the 4th and 3rd levels of the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test.) In addition to the basic character and it's readings, each card lists several different vocabulary combinations. These include words needed for the lower levels of the JLPT, as well as more complex formulations that will be seen on the 1st or 2nd level of the test. They also list words and phrases that may not appear on the JLPT, but that are useful to know.

While nothing can take the place of a Japanese class or at least a textbook, these Kanji cards are an excellent way to improve you reading and writing skills and expand your vocabulary.

I'm usually concerned about purchasing items on line, especially books. I can honestly say that this experience was worth it. I would recommend this seller to anyone interested in purchasing good quality books at extremely reasonable prices.

Buy with confidence, I did!

Typical Educational Program Bias

This book, Multicultural Education, is a typical example of the leftist bias in the educational field. Rather than giving the results of research and allowing the reader to form his or her own opinions as to what that research means regarding education, the authors do it for you. The funny thing is that most of the folks who read this book won't even notice the bias, since they have never heard the other side through college, and especially through their teacher cred. program. California rates consistent Ds and Fs in education and have been trying to use this gargbage since the 60's. What does that say? Teacher education is so full of itself that it will never admit it is a giant waste of time, and ultimately, a giant failure. I haven't yet met a successful teacher who proscribes to this social reengineering phsychobabble, and no sucessful person in business buys it (which is what you are preparing your students for by the way). They actually tell you that individual effort should be frowned upon, that minorities should attribute their failures to their social classes, that if you want to change Title 9 and actually save your college sports team from being disbanded due to funding, you are a militant conservative, and last but not least, if you do not focus on the differences in your students, you are doing them harm. Unreal. Do yourself a favor, buy the book since you are forced to, read it with just a little part of your brian engaged so the rest is not infected, and realize that it (except for chapter 5, which was the only academic chapter in the entire book) is a giant pile of leftist garbage. IN MY OPINION. But hey, at least they got published right? Oh yeah, since I am actually afraid of speaking my mind in an industry so controlled by the left, I will repeat that this entire commentary is IN MY OPINION.

Yup, it's educational...

This book and the ordering process met the need I had for my online course work. Ordering through Amazon.com is fast, simple, and straight forward. The book provides an adequate review of multicultural educaitonal practices but misses the point in a few areas. I recommend you read it for yourself and compare it to other resources to find out how.

Good book discussing some basic issues facing teachers in multicultural settings (or any setting for that matter).

If you are already familiar with the topics covered then it'll be a refresher. If you are oblivious to some of these ideas then this will be a good book for you.

This was a required book in my course but I bought the 5th edition as it is nearly identical, they added and removed a nonessential, testing insert for the 6th edition. I saved a lot of money by going with the previous edition which is important for many students.

I was very impress with the material covered in this book. The authors did a thorough job from the historical perspectives of mutlicultural in this country. From the historical to current events that affect multiculture and especially multicultural education. I like the way the incorporated GT students as well as Special Ed students in this book. For these students are also found in the minority cultures and as they pointed out the are so overly represented in the Special Ed programs and not as much in the GT programs. As educators we have more work to do to make sure all students receive an equitable and quality education.
