I ordered this book for a class I was taking. Amazon had a wonderful first-time buyers discount through the Visa card and it seemed like a perfect way to get my book. The listing for the postage said I had two hours to order for the book to reach me next day. The book did not arrive until four days later! In addition, I directed it to go to a different mailing address but it went to my home address. I didn't get the book until a week later! Another student in the class had the exact same experience with the same book, but hers never arrived!

The book itself is good. It gives ideas for lesson planning for phonics and vocabulary which have been pretty easy to follow and implement. It is an easy read.

Dr. Gambrell has done a thorough work in "Best Practices...." and the research is impeccable. I will be using this as my guide to literacy instruction for a long time.

I am studying at University of Phoenix online at doctoral level. I found this book to be very useful and fruitful. The language being used is easy. The author talked about all learning theories. I think all educators, teachers, school administrators should know what the learning theories are about.

Dr. Schunk's book pulls out all the stops for teaching theory. Any topic you need from social cognitive theory to classical conditioning to the more cognitively oriented perspectives can be found here. It possesses the best index that I have yet to see in a textbook of this caliber. You can find ANYTHING that you need!

I used this book in my master's training, and it is the perfect compliment for the ETS PRAXIS Test-Prep books for the PLT.

A Paradox in the Classroom: How Objectivity Cultivates Uncritical Teachers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-24
Vivian Paley's groundbreaking work, White Teacher, ushers one through an array of intimate experiences with and reflections about the challenges she faced as a white teacher, working to develop a pedagogy free of the marginalization and neglect that disproportionately affect the educational experiences of many non-white children. Paley's evolving understanding of the complexities of teaching white and black students together in the racialized America of the 1970's emerges from the frozen frames of the United States' educational past as uniquely relevant for teachers in the twenty-first century. Within the first four lines of the forward of her 2000 reprinting of White Teacher, Paley is praised by James P. Comer, M.D. and Alvin Poussaint, M.D. for, among other things, her ability to "remain objective" in the midst of her "deep personal involvement." Considering the essentiality of critical thinking to the pedagogy of effective and influential teachers, I find these practitioners' reference to objectivity not only inappropriate and harmful for all teachers, but also offensive, especially to the generations of teachers, whose voices and contributions have been habitually and historically excluded from major conversations in education because they have been deemed too subjective.

Whether it be intentional or not, applying the label of objectivity to Paley's writing, evokes associations with scientific inquiry and thus to the notion of "an objective truth," which unjustifiably elevate the status of White Teacher and in effect, belittle the opinions of educators perceived by outsiders as unable to estrange themselves from their students - most often in terms of a shared racial or gender identification. I believe Paley understood and meant for White Teacher to document her personal recollections of and working conclusions about how to promote equity as a white teacher in a classroom in which black and white children learn together. Paradoxically, Comer and Poussaint's attempt to validate Paley's words silence the individuals about whom she was writing, unveiling the common and potentially detrimental conclusion many teachers have reached after reading White Teacher. For educators to denote Paley's depictions as objective implies or necessitates the existence of a subjective and therefore inferior "other." The understanding that underlies and maintains this reciprocal relationship has no place in teacher education because it hinders the ability of teachers to question and think critically. Furthermore, assertions about the objectivity of Paley's work subtly undermine and invalidate the knowledge, experiences, and opinions of the marginalized children and educators to whom Paley sought to give a voice through her impassioned writing.

This book helped me overcome my color blindness. As a teacher of 17 years, I always thought the best way to address differences was to just igore them and embrace similarities. White teacher taught me that we need to also celebrate each others differences.

I have only gotten half way through this book, but so far it is really good. I am studying to be in the education field and this book is an insight to how different children are and how you have to appeal to each one of them. Paley is a wonderful author and is good at describing her situations. I would recommend this book to anyone intereted in teaching children and anyone who wants an insight to how children behave and why. Definately a good book.

This book will really bring to light exactly how children learn to identify themselves. This book will reinforce the truth that prejudice is learned and that adults play a huge role in the value systems that children adopt. You'll also find a few things in here that make you giggle...after all the book is about a kindergarten class.

We used it in our methods class to improve reading in all class types. I reccommend this book to throw some interactive strategies into your lesson plans!

I teach youth and this was a very concise way of compiling different study methods. This easy-to-understand guide offers 12 different Bible study methods to help you explore biblical truths, apply them to your life, and grow as a disciple. Personal Bible Study Methods will help you develop a customized, personal approach to exploring and studying the riches of God's Word. It was easy to understand and broken down comprehensively. Another great book by a great author with a gift of teaching.

I needed a guide to help me better study the Bible; I'm afraid this is not what I got, but I am dealing with it. In this Guide, there are more fill in the blanks than instructions, but as usual, unlike the Purpose Driven Church, I will try and make this work to my advantage.

Rick Warren has me a little 'symied' with his latest writings; the Church book and the study methods..Is the gentleman tired of "sharing" his awesome messages, (to us) that he has become a little distracted and lax on some subjects?

And trust me I'm a fan of his; but at this point a puzzeled one.

Good nuts and bolts book for Bible Study

While others enjoy Kay Arthur's inductive method study books (I own Discover the Bible for Yourself & How to Study Your Bible), I have found this book to probably be one of the most practical in my library. As another person mentioned, this is an update of an older book. Possibly the one someone mentioned that they received through Billy Graham's organization or this may really be an update of "12 Dynamic Bible Study Methods" by Warren and Shell. It does continue from where RA Torrey "How to Study the Bible" has left off and adds other methods that would be helpful to any student of the Bible. This book gives the tools necessary to help you to dig in the Word and will reinvigorate your Bible Study. All the Bible to interpret the Bible, take it literally wherever at all possible and preach the Word.

Rick Warren does a great job of reviewing basic methods one will need to study the bible. In my humble opinion this is a great resource for the money. Here is how it's set up.

He previews how materials you will need, and how different study resources are used. He also tells you which ones are considered some of the strongest.

He gives you a preview of the 12 bible study methods and then goes into each more in depth. The 12 bible study methods are: The Devotional Method, Chapter Summary Method, Character Quality Method, The Thematic Method, The Biographical Method, The topical Method, the Word Study Method, Book Background Method, Book Survey Method, Chapter Analysis Method, Book Synthesis Method, and the Verse By Verse Analysis Method.

He also has 7 appendices in the back. These appendices are to aid you in what you just learned. He also has a list of other bible study books in the back for further learning.

In Conclusion, I feel this is a good book to learn various methods for personal bible study. The book is inexpensive (I got it for less than ten dollars), detailed, it teaches you what you will need and why, and gives you the keys to applying these various methods. I give it four stars because it is not as detailed as it could have been. However, if your looking to dig deeper he shows you which books to go to. This is a 4 and a half star purchase in my humble opinion.

When I was first told that this book was required for my college English class, I thought that because of the title, the cover, and the spiral binding, this book would be another one of those dull textbooks. I definitely thought wrong. Inside this book, you will discover a world of information along with color photographs, real life examples of how writing is important, and the most up-to-date MLA information including proper citation methods, proper essay formats, proper punctuation, and proper syntax. Now that I am out of that first semester of English, I still view this book as valuable reference material due to it's comprehensive information on today's modern writing techniques. If you enjoy both reading and writing, I would strongly encourage you to purchase this book.

Trumps Peterson's Book By An Edge Due To Balanced Presentation
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-21
Once again, Prentice Hall displays why it remains a superforce in creating textbooks: its balanced and accessible research-based comprehensiveness. As with my first Chemistry book in high school, I believe this book possesses everything you will need to know about early childhood curriculum.

The former champion, in my opinion,--Evelyn Peterson's A PRACTICAL GUIDE OT EARLY CHILDHOOD CURRICULUM--gets bested here because this text presents, in a well-understood way, what Peterson's book also did well: present pratical explanations. This texts gets the slight edge because the authors ably worked in all the research and citations relevant to the concepts without overloading a teacher's mind with scholarship. It's a difficult feat that I have only seen one other time in an ECE text (J.A. Brewer's INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION).

Here's where you really get a smashing deal: this book will give you all you need to grasp the curriculum topics on the PRAXIS II: Education of the Young Child test.

The New Champion of Early Childhood Curriculum college textbooks. Take a bow and a victory lap.
