This book is a must-have for educators. Since the push for inclusion means many students with disabilities are entering regular schools and classrooms with their peers, it is of great worth that the regular teacher as well as the special education teachers know the background of the laws that pertain to these students with diverse needs. It would be beneficial to both students, teachers, and parents to know and understand how the laws are applied in court, what an IEP is, what is expected of the teachers, and what can be expected of the students. I have the other major law books on disability laws, but this one is more geared toward other participants in the process besides lawyers. It is very readable and very understandable without having to go to law school to get a background in law first. I suggest this or rather recommend this to my friends and students who are interested in working with those with disabilities in regular school settings. GREAT Resource

I love, love, love this resource. Every single activity is "do-able" and fun and creative. It promotes creative thinking, and you hardly ever find a ditto book that can do that. Using sources is a standard in my state, and the dictionary scavenger hunts are perfect. Couldn't live without this book!

The schedule at my independent middle school has a way of changing unexpectedly, leaving me time that needs to be useful but not necessarily curricular. This book is full of wonderful ideas for just such moments. My students will even ask for something from the book if they have finished assigned work. Thank you!

A MUST have for any English or Language Arts Teacher!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

I have little to say except this is the single most useful book I have ever used in teaching English. It is comprehensive, simple, fast, and engaging. The lessons written within provide an outlet for an array of intelligences. If you ever wanted to teach your kids about figurative language or about syntax, or diction, simply using these 20 minute lesson plans will do it. My students have gone from not knowing what a verb is, to not only identifying the literal and figurative term in a metaphor, but using them in their own writing. It has made a difference in my students learning.

Voice in Middle School Poetry
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-21
This is my first year teaching 6th grade language arts (or language arts in general, for that matter), and I began the year most nervous about teaching poetry. I mean, I enjoy poetry, but I've never really been taught how to read poetry, at least not in a deep way. I had ideas for teaching some of the techniques used in poetry (like similes, methaphors, and personification), but I didn't know how to read a poem and analyze it in any meaningful way. (And if I didn't know, how was I going to teach my students?)

To make myself feel better, I went online and purchased several books to help me teach poetry, including Discovering Voice. Of all the books I bought, this was BY FAR the best at giving me ideas for teaching the specific aspects of writing (diction, syntax, etc.). While the book does not focus specifially on poetry, the activities can easily be incorporated into a poetry unit. So far, I've only used a couple of the activities with my students, but all of them have worked very well. I especially liked the Introduction to Voice activities at the begining of the book, and my students really enjoyed relating voice in poetry to voice in art and music (which they are much more interested in at this point in their lives). I would definately recommmend this book for anyone who is interested in deepening their student's study of poetry.

This book properly positions family, Catholic education, the spirituality of work, and the right to life as values that should be promulgated by everyone including the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case quite often by the Church, for details, google isaiah59.

How does Catholic dogma affect your daily life?
Faith or pragmatism?
Hope, faith, inspiration, spiritual motivation are well studied in this book. Highly recommended. An inspirational book.

Sentences too long and abstract

My daughter is 5, she is not interested. She does not like "sometimes", or "some kids". She wants stories from life about kids and adults. She does not like abstract reasoning in long sentences.
But stories in a book are easy to rewrite for her. And they are good guide of what should be done. Such as "Tom saw this and did that. Teacher was happy. Bob saw that and did this. Teacher was sad."

I like the variety of ways that the stories can be presented to the student. The stories may be cut into conceptual thoughts, or put into a three-ring binder, placing the pages in plastic sheets, just to name a couple. It leaves room also for filling in any missing pieces of the Social Story puzzle, dependending on the circumstance.

After trying at least four other proofreading exercise programs over the years, I've finally found the winner of the bunch. These proofreading exercises are at just the right level for my middle schoolers, and the humor keeps them engaged. The jokes are helping improve my EL students' reading comprehension, as well. At first, my EL students had to frequently ask for the explanation to a joke. Now, most of them pick up on the context clues that create the humor. I highly recommend "Phunny Stuph."

This book has been wonderful to use in my 8th grade Language Arts classes as a daily warm-up. The students enjoy reading and correcting these funny stories way more than anything else I have tried. In fact, I ordered this book because one of my students was sitting with me as I previewed it and was laughing out loud! It is well worth the purchase!

Clear and Thorough Grammar Resource
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-10
Dr. Ross has written a grammar guide that goes through basic sentence construction in Mandarin Chinese in a clear and systematic way. However, in an effort to be both accurate and exhaustive, the book occasionally gets bogged down in specialized grammar terminology such as "stative verb" and "aspectual suffix" that are sure to confuse younger learners of the language. As with most Schaum's outlines, the answers in the back of the book encourage self-study. Overall, a solid resource for adult learners who want a more thorough survey of technical grammar.

Although I didn't have time to read through the entire book, I am sure this will be very helpful as a reference book.

I am not happy that I had to wait over 1.5 months to receive the book, but I can tell that Amazon made their efforts to ship this item seperatly with another book that I ordered in March, which was not in stock for long time.

I'm currently living and studying in China. Although I'm a full-time Chinese student, all of my text books are written by Chinese educators. This is a great thing especially when I get more advanced in my study. However, right now I'm more toward the beginning and the English explanations in my textbooks are often mistranslated and confusing. For those of you who are toward the end of their first term of Chinese study (or if you have a general understanding of the language) this book will help you greatly.

I've found it written in a way that is easier to grasp than many of my own Chinese textbooks. The readability of Schaum's book is what really sold me into singing its praises.

I too am working my way through the Pimsleur series and this book does a great job of accompanying and clarifying some of the grammar points made in those lessons.

Some people have said that this book isn't for the beginner. Well maybe so and maybe not. I will say that after a term of study I have a lot of questions that this book has helped me answer. My only regret is not purchasing it sooner as it could have helped me after the first month.

Chinese has grammar? Well, not so much grammar as it applies to say, European language, but rather sentence patterns, suffix ending particles and lots and lots of them. This is an excellent book for explaining those sentence patterns and particles. This should help whip your Chinese into shape.

Why I love this book

As I wrote in another review on Modern Chinese Grammar, I am developing a course for English speakers to learn Mandarin. What I didn't write is that if I could only have one Chinese grammar this would be it. This is an outline. It is not as complete or functional as the Modern Chinese Grammar. However, it contains all that you would need to master Chinese patterns ( there is a scholarly argument as to whether the language actually has a grammar).

I have found information in here that I found no where else. This is a concise, distillation of how the language functions. Recently my Chinese teacher showed me a pattern but couldn't explain the logic and rules of use behind it. She said, " I can't tell you why but this is the way we say it." Of course, I found the information in Schaum's.
