As a first year teacher, I have made it my obligation to get my hands on as many resources as possible to learn my "craft." I am amazed at how much this book has changed my concept of teaching writing. I now understand what it is to "describe" a good piece of work rather than "prescribe" a good piece of work.

When I received this book after having attended a workshop, I did not know what to do with it-how to read it, understand it, but after having a year of experience and assessing my weaknesses (how to teach writing), I now understand.

I thank Katie Wood Ray for sharing herself and her findings with us.

If you want to teach writing to children, read this book!

I've taught for 21 years, but I always felt like there must be a better way to teach writing to children. This book tells how. Katie Wood Ray gives specific techniques for teaching structure, ways with words, and teaches you to teach your students to read like writers. For all of this, she uses the most marvelous children's books, most picture books but some young adult novels. I have worked on increasing my library under her direction, and I'm having a ball watching my students learn to love to write.

Should be in every reading teacher's professional library

Katie Wood Ray has made a very readable, very usable book to help teachers teach students to 'read like writers'. I use the ideas when I am reading and reviewing new children's literature and each time I begin writing instruction with my elementary remedial students. Truly shows how to integrate student writing and good children's literature.

A wonderful read as well as a wonderful resource!

I have enjoyed everyword of this book. I am an aspiring English teacher who is fortunate enough to have Katie Ray's guidance as a professor and mentor. This book is one of the few that I will not sell back. This unique way of teaching writing writing is creative, relaxing, and enjoyable for both the teacher and the student. No matter what grade you teach you need this book! Katie has an amazing gift as a teacher and a writer which she expresses wonderfully in this book.

THE BEST EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE OUT THERE!

As a writer of children's books and a second grade teacher, I refer to this book often - for support, guidance, affirmation, ideas, writing help, and more. It is perfect!

I hope to have the opportunity to cross paths with the author one day...I'd love to see her speak!

I recommend it all the time to teaching colleagues, friends, writers, and editors.

Pretty helpful to have for the course. It tends to leave out answers to the simplest questions from the beginning of the problems in each chapter but otherwise is good. For me, I could use a little more step by step answers for some of the solutions but it may may be just fine for others. Overall, I would recommend having this manual for the course.

For a relatively short book this is an extremely comprehensive, practical, and accessible guide to case studies in education. Since reading it for my dissertation, I've referred to it several times for other projects. I've also strongly recommended it in my classes and for students conducting their theses. It gives both the hows and whys of case studies...motivational and informative.

I am a Ph.D. student working on my dissertation in case study research. This book is right on target for academic researchers using a case study approach. If you don't know anything about the process, you need this book. If you think you already know this process, you need this book.

I recommend this book for anyone with zero or nearly zero knowledge about qualitative research and case study. Even though the majority of the examples are for education field, the generic explanation is very clear. The book guided me step by step by giving bit by bit necessary information regarding the topic.
This book is an exhibit of the author's experiences in the topic as well as her mastery of the story-telling flow without trapped in informal way of writing. The author did very well in explaning "new" terms, so that novice reader does not need to struggle to understand the qualitative research and case study research jargon.
However, there are some shallow discussions on some parts, like computer tools for data management. The author, however, provided an array of further reading materials to consult.
My advice is if you confused by any other books or any description about the topic, especially about the jargon, read this book. When you finish this book, and you return to read those other books, your earlier confusion will disappear.

I bought this book hoping that it would help with my introducing class rules to my kindergarteners. I am sooo happy that I bought it. It brings a poster which I laminated and keep near my teaching area. I always refer back to it to remind students how Kevin followed a certain rule. I always ask them if they look like Kevin looks on the poster when they are sitting on the rug. They all want to follow the rules just like Kevin does.

The book is a bit pricey for a paperback but it really is worth the money. This a very good classroom management tool that is well worth the price.

A must have!!

What a great book! Straightfoward while still remaining entertaining and cute, this book makes introducing class rules so much easier. Each year I struggle to invent an effective way to introduce my class rules and make a visual to display. Now the work is done for me!! The illustrations in the poster are identical to the ones in the book, so even your non-readers will be able to "read" the poster that is included with the book for daily rule review. A must have!

Wonderfully written book. I bought it for my 7 yr. old who is starting second grade this year, we read it together to "get ready for big boy school" and he just loves it. It's a quiet time favorite at our house and I now hear him telling his little sister "the rules" and Kevin is our latest household hero!!!

I am a School Psychologist working in New Jersey. I was looking for a good way to introduce classroom rules in a manner that would appeal to children. After purchasing a copy of "Kevin Knows the Rules", I shared it with several primary teachers in two elementary schools. Everyone who reviewed the book found it delightful and a very unique way to introduce classroom rules and proceedures. All the teachers involved plan to use it early in the 2008-09 school year as a way of establishing a friendly and orderly classroom. Thans to the author for finally providing an appealing and non-threatening way to establish the social context so important in a primary classroom.

The book shows the reader how to make Social Studies interesting and not cause students to become bored with the subject. This book will also help me in my future classroom!:) The last thing I would want is for a student to become bored with any subject.

A Real Addition to the World of Study Bibles

Review Date: 2008-05-06
In a world that seems to produce a never-ending stream of Study Bibles for everyone from Charismatic Women With Toddlers to Reformed Men Who Work in the Tech Sector, this Study Bible actually adds something to the Study Bible genre. The notes and articles are excellent for those who are open to conservative scholarship. The layout of the Bible is beautiful. It is colorful and eye-catching. This is definitely not a Bible to carry to church, unless you are into combining worship with weight-lifting. It is big and heavy. It is, however, a great Bible to read and study. This Bible, along with the Literary Study Bible, would provide a great foundation for study for many Christians.

The gold standard

For journalists, the AP style guides are pretty much the gold standard (or silver, depending on your economic policy leanings). With so much terrible grammar and punctuation, and often lack of punctuation, present in today's world, this is a must-have for aspiring writers, especially journalists.

Decent reference
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-11
There's no mystery here, and it's not intended to be a grammatically pristene work of art. It is, after all, a 96-page reference manual. If you are used to writing/editing literary and academic styles and need to refresh your memory on the punctuation variables in journalistic writing, this is an easy point-to reference that won't take up any more of your precious time than absolutely necessary.

Full of mistakes
Helpful Votes: 31 out of 34 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-03
It appears that some fool edited the cautionary examples for correctness. (p. 34) The grammar is poor ("verboten" as a noun? (p. 85)), and the usage is non-standard (Commas are "trundled out"? (p.37)). Some passages are self-contradictory ("With Adjectives, p. 37).

This book is not a total disaster, but I can hardly recommend it.

Efficient and entertaining, but slim for my personal taste
Helpful Votes: 39 out of 40 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-02
Written with lively and direct prose, Rene J. Cappon's guide to punctuation succeeds in being a useful resourse for the busy journalist. No reader need fear about getting bogged down in the finer points of periods. If such a situation threatens to occur, Capon is quick to suggest a workaround. This leaves the stickiest questions even stickier, a real prickle for someone as persnickety as me. But for the journalist, or journalism student, I heartily recommend it.

To those looking for a deeper understanding of punctuation, I caution against this slim tome. Organized into seventeen chapters by punctuation, some of them no more than a half of a page ('The Ampersand') and some as many as sixteen ('The Comma'), the AP GUIDE TO PUNCTUATION lacks the philosophical depth and historical background of recent bestseller EATS, SHOOTS, & LEAVES as well as the dry grammar books of days past. The examples, while fun, are not nearly as comprehensive as one expects in any book that bills itself as a reference.

By way of example, here is the entire entry for Irregular Plurals under 'The Apostrophe':

---

Irregular plurals also take the apostrophe: children's hour, women's rights, gentlemen's traditions, men's club, and so do nouns that are the same in singular: the single moose's antlers, the deer's track, the two corps' travels. The apostrophe stays whether the meaning is singular or plural.

---

No mention is made that it is preferable to disambiguate the singular and plural in such cases. Especially in journalistic writing, where clarity and simplicity are the twin grails of good style.

A dedicated journalist might prefer a true grammar of the English language or the complete and comprehensive AP STYLE BOOK. While they may be dry, they will certainly go a good deal further in answering the questions that arise in all aspects of writing.
