How do you cover American History from the late 1400's to 1877 in about 120 pages? It's not possible to cover it all, and this book doesn't do that. But it does cover the high points and many items that are important in passing the CLEP exam. Much of the material covered was on the version of the CLEP that I got, and the material was covered in concise form.

The only complaint I have about this book is that the language is sometimes difficult and laborious to read. I guess I would classify it as "poor sentence structure." However, the material is there, and if you take your time reading it, you should get out of it what you need.

The tests on the accompanying CD were probably the best thing about this book. They are spot on as far as being similar to the material you should see on the real CLEP, and the format is similar enough that you will feel right at home when you take the real thing.

This book and the CD were my best weapon in passing this exam.

Perfect groundwork for an easy A

For my RN-MSN program I needed to take 2 history courses ASAP. I had no desire to waste time sitting in a class room so I decided to try the CLEP exams. I took the US History exam yesterday. To be able to look at each test question and think " My gosh I know this" is a great feeling.
This book was the basis of my preparation; used in conjunction with Barons EZ 101 American History to 1877 and America A Narrative History. The REA CLEP book covered some topics in more depth than others but when used with the other references , I was more than prepared. The best part of this book is the practice exams and the answer explanations. Some of the practice questions were on my actual CLEP exam word for word others were rephrased but still strongly resembled the practice questions . This book is worth every penny and I have already purchased the REA CLEP book for the Western Civilization test that I will take in 4 weeks. When time is of the essence, you will find this book to be an excellent investment in your success.

I liked the fact that the product came in quickly but it was placed in a small box that didn't fix the size of the book so it was folded over bubble wrap. When I got it, the book was bent and even though it was placed so that it wouldn't bent, becasue the box was smaller than the product and folded, it did bend and affected the pages and cover. Next time, if you could please place the product in a box that fit.

Thank God that Tim LaHaye is pointing the believers in this direction.

The passages of scripture many in the church rely on to support the rapture teaching are found in I Corinthians 15 and I Thessalonians 4. These passages refer to the coming of Christ in glory after the tribulation. Both are public events for all the world to witness. Jesus said the resurrection occurs on the last day in John, not three years prior before the tribulation. Jesus said he comes in glory after the tribulation and the dead in Christ shall rise. There are only two resurrections: one after the tribulation and another after the millennium. Therefore, the resurrection is not the rapture because it would serve no purpose after the tribulation since the harm is past. The promise in scripture is to repent to escape the wrath to come, which occurs during the tribulation. Jesus taught us to pray accordingly. Hence, the escape or rapture is before the tribulation during a negligence time. This is why all the parables have a negligence setting. There is no negligence setting during the tribulation, only panic and fear. Thus, nearly all the parables apply before the tribulation as in the days of Noah and Lot.

The Apostle Paul alludes to an escape in I Thessalonians 5, but says at the beginning of the chapter that the church has no need that he write on the coming of the day of the Lord because everyone knows it comes unexpectedly like a thief in the night. So Paul believed that the fact that Christ was coming at an unexpected time was such common knowledge he said very little about it because it was virtually a non-issue it was so fundamental to the teaching of Christ. This is why the teaching that Christ only appears publicly after the tribulation cannot be true because at that time it will be expected. It will not be as a thief in the night. Jesus said in the tribulation you will desire to see one of the days of the son of man and will not see it until he comes with lightening for all the world to see.

However, Paul uses many of the terms that are used by Christ in his many parables of his unexpected coming such as sleep, watch, sober, darkness, drunkenness, night, and escape. His use of such terms indicates he was acutely aware of the teaching of Christ. Hence, he references the parables of Christ implicitly. His epistles to the Thessalonians combined follow the same order of the synoptic gospel accounts of the coming of Christ which alerts the church to the antichrist and then the tribulation, but then backs up in time as do all three synoptic gospels and depicts a negligence setting right before Jesus returns as a thief in the night just prior to the revealing of the antichrist.

In that night Jesus says, two shall be in bed, the field, grinding at a mill, and one would be taken and another left. (Luke 17) You cannot be left behind spiritually or taken spiritually. These are not even parables. These are prophetic statements of Christ, which Jesus says many will come from all directions and sit down in the kingdom of God with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. This can only be a physical removing of the ready Christians from the face of the earth. There flight is not in the winter or on the Sabbath. This is the rapture of the wise virgins and the wise stewards which Jesus gave more parables concerning than any other truth, approximately 30 parables and illustrations all pointing to the same truth. This is the most compelling truth in the Bible to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Indeed, Jesus gave notice to us in the church of our own negligence and the resulting judgment against us during the tribulation unless we are accounted worthy to escape the tribulation. It is the foremost truth of the parables of Christ. Where this foremost truth is rejected, it is foreseeable there will be judgment, specifically, against the church. This is the gospel of the kingdom that Christ preached that he said would be preached throughout the whole world and then shall the end come.

Whether you have led small groups for years or you are just starting out, you will find practical advice in this great resource. The text is easy to follow and can easily be used by small group leaders as they "group" together to learn to lead.

Most of the Church is now focussed on relational evangelism. What better way to cultivate a personal relationship than in the small group. The group offers the opportunity to really know each other. Once strong relationships are in place, people begin to grow, multiplication takes place, and lives are changed.

If this is what you want to accomplish you will find easy to understand technique in Leading a Life Changing Small Group.

Good for beginning or refining small group ministry

The thrust of the book is to help you organize a small group ministry in your church, as in almost reorganizing how your church works to include everyone in a small group and pastor them in a small group setting. There is a substantial section on how to conduct different types of small groups, which is what I bought it for, and that part is very good. I've been leading small groups for a few years - some of the insights are things you would learn over time, others I hadn't quite gotten to yet. I would highly recommend this to anyone leading a small group. I disagree with his belief in women leading small groups of mixed gender, but that's a minor disagreement, the content is still great.

Our 350 member church has studied 'small groups' intentionally for 18 months. We just launched 18 groups with 150 participants. Things appear to be going very well. This manual has grown continually in our esteem and confidence. It is thorough, Biblically rich, helpful in the extreme, organized, & educationally sound. A small group leader can take this resource, and with study and effort, learn how to start immediately as an effective leader and then how to continually enrich the group's life together. A church program can choose it as a foundation and better the odds for success greatly and instantly. Highest recommendation. Thank you, Willow.

Our congregation has used Bill Donahue's Leading Life-Changing Small Groups as our primary reference manual for training small group leaders for over 5 years. It gets right to the heart of the organization and leadership issues needed for successful ministry. It is also an excellent reference for avoiding and resolving problems that may occur as people get to know one another.

As an educational psychologist, I often recommend this book (along with the classic, Guiding the Gifted) to parents whose bright or gifted children are struggling with social emotional issues. This is a well-written, easy to use guide that looks at important issues such as self-esteem, self-image, and gifted underachievement. The authors go far beyond identifying these problems and offer lots of practical advice on how to help gifted kids who are struggling at home or at school. Clearly written with lots of sidebar material, checklists, anecdotes, and quotes from gifted kids, parents, and teachers - this book is a joy to read. Another great book on this topic is Gifted Children: Myths and Realities by Ellen Winner

This book is exactly what I hoped it would be- it gives solid information on gifted children and suggests ways to help them talk about concerns and challenges that come with the "gifted" label. This book was a wonderful discovery for me-- a brand new teacher of the gifted. (One chapter is devoted to the teacher.) The information in this book is encouraging for those new to the field and provides valuable insights into some of the general characteristics of gifted kids and the issues they face. It has some questionnaires and material that could easily lead you and into meaningful discussions.

"When Gifted Kids Don't Have All the Answers" isn't just an excellent book for teachers and parents of gifted children (though it definitely is such a book). I just picked this book up at the local bookstore, and, as a gifted child (well, young adult, now) myself, I can honestly say that this book has been just as much help for me as I think it would be for any teacher or parent, if only because it validates everything about gifted kids that I've known and felt ever since I was little.

I think that every gifted child should have a chance to read this book, if only to understand him- or herself a little bit better, as well as to understand the struggles that teachers and parents of gifted kids go through, trying to teach and parent such children. And I thank the authors very much for writing such an interesting, useful book.

Stephanie Pappas present a refreshing approach to teaching postural Yoga. Stephanie offers excellent verbal cues that are easy to understand and well thought out. Some of Stephanie's recommendations for adjustments may not be appropriate for all teachers and students but her suggestions certainly have a place in Yoga classes and should be considered by all postural Yoga teachers.

"Yoga Postures, Adjustments and Assisting" is a user-friendly book that covers many postural issues that I encountered during my years of teachings asana classes. It also includes an extensive section of commonly asked questions with intelligent and thoughtful responses that are sure to assist teachers of every level. I believe that postural Yoga teachers and students will find Stephanie's well-written and beautifully photographed book a welcome addition to their library.

I love this book! Stefani's "Yoga Posture Adjustments and Assisting" presents a unique approach to teaching and practicing yoga. It is well written with clear instructions for successful adjustments and lots of great photographs. The verbal cues and prop suggestions are invaluable and offer a comfortable and compassionate way to approach students of all levels. Using Stefani's adjustments offers an opportunity to connect on a deeper level with students. Most students view the adjustments as a wonderful experience that also helps them to improve their ability to move into a pose. This book should be a part of every yoga teacher's library.

I have had the opportunity to study with Stephanie and attend her Yoga Posture Adjustment workshops, she is an inspiring guide with the highest standards of integrity and safety. I have gone time and time again to her book in order to deepen the experience of yoga poses for my clients. Her method of adjustment with practice becomes a natural, instinctive tool. The book provides simple visual presentation of poses with detailed instructions for assisting. It takes it a step further by providing prop suggestions and verbal cues. I highly recommend this book to deepen your knowledge of the mechanics of asanas, and to develop the ability to correct and adjust the execution. I have received adjustments and given adjustments and both experiences have enhanced my yoga practice. If you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend one of Stephanie's workshops be sure to take advantage, you too will be inspired!

A must read for any Yoga Teacher or Student! As a yoga teacher I find this book to be of great value due to its comprehensive style of writing, easy to execute adjustment/assisting techniques and clear, and precise illustrations. Not only is this book a resource for any yoga teacher but also for any yoga student. There are descriptions in the book that can lead a student into a more gratifying experience simply by applying some of the alignment cues, for instance, while standing in Mountain pose, Stephanie states "spread your toes", "firm the lower abs and bring your navel toward the spine", "drop your tailbone and let your shoulders relax." The author also provides suggestions on how to deepen the students experience and keep an eye out for misalignment by using props, blankets, straps and blocks. What I find extremely beneficial is the creative language and array of adjustment choices Stephanie provides for balancing and twist postures and forward folds. For example, the author uses the "standing squat" or "horse stance" when assisting a student in a standing posture such as half moon 2 or warrior 3 pose. I especially love the ever so clever "opening a jar" technique for twisting postures. Stephanie Pappas shows teachers how to apply your own body mechanics in a safe and informed way that feels good to the students. There are many more examples in the book, but those were a few of the many techniques I really enjoy doing on my students and my students enjoy receiving.

I use Words Their Way in my classroom all the time. I love the way it teaches my students to spell logically and developmentally. I can tell a lot about my students understanding about how English words are written and pronounced by the way they read and spell a word. This book is specifically about English Language Learners and that is an even greater asset. I have used Words Their Way with my ESOL students for awhile but this book really has a great understanding of my students and a better focus on them. I would still include the main book and the books for each developmental spelling stage in the program, but this book helps immensely. It is even better for teachers with ESOL students in their classes who have no or little training in how to teach them. Or for people who want to understand a bit more - like me!

The New Creative Artist: A Guide To Developing Your Creative Spirit

Here is another WOW spiral-bound book!!! It is full of COLOR,a lifetime of ideas, activities, and opportunities to s-t-r-e-t-c-h. The coverage of the Design Element is full: Line, Shape, Value, Color, Size, Pattern, Movement, Harmony, Contrast, Rhythm, Repetition, Gradation, Balance, Dominance, Format Options, Compositional Choices, Design Strategies, and touches on when to give the rules a rest. If that isn't enough, there's lots more! I especially look forward to working through the section: The Realism-Abstraction Connection during my next artistic transition. A beautiful book!

This book wasn't as good as "celebrating your creative self."

It was a little wordy with inspirational messages. Not as much about technique and new ideas as I was hoping.

Definitely Creative!

This book will get any creative body with a block back into their creative hobby. She gives so many great ideas, like that you should write down all the great creative ideas you think of and put them in to a jar. That way, whenever you can't think of something to get your creative juices flowing, just grab your jar and do whatever the piece of paper says!

On a sidenote: I also love that the binding is ring - so that you can fold the book flat and not worry about pages closing on you when you are trying out something new - but that it is also protected by a larger cover so the ring binder doesn't fall apart like they usually do - THANK YOU PUBLISHER!

Anyhow, great buy for any artist or artists' library - a book I will forever reference...I only wish that Leland explained more of the techniques behind rare art forms (but that would add a whole other book!).
