I used this review book about two weeks before an SAT. If I had more time, I am sure it would have made me do even better on the test. This fully prepares you for any math questions that may show up on the exam. Barron's really is the best review book company.

I am a math tutor who has used this book to help several kids study for the SAT. It is a good review of the material covered on the SAT. It has a full section explaining each type of question followed by plenty of practice problems ranging from easy to very difficult. I have not found many mistakes in the book. There are answers and explanations for all the problems in the book making it easy for students to self teach. There are also practice tests which I feel are a great deal harder than the actual SAT. The Appendix to the book is an excellent math review listing all the math concepts needed very consisely allowing a quick review the night before the test.

I'm an SAT tutor that actually takes the SAT three times a year. This is a great book and I wish all my students had the discipline to use it. The complaint from the other SAT tutor is not relevant to the objective of raising your score (which if you are scoring in the 500's can easily go up 100 points if you use this book in conjunction with the eight practice tests in the College Board Official Study Guide). This book remediates your math skill weaknesses which is the first step in preparing for the SAT math section. Once completed, (just the sections you are weak or rusty in)then dive into the eight practice tests in the College Board book which combine math reasoning with math skill. My other favorite resource for my students is Acing the New SAT I Math by Greenhall Publishing---an excellent resource to use by itself or in combination with Barron's. It's actually more comprehensive than Barron's and ideal for the student that is looking for a challenge and a score over 650. I would do the Barron's book first and then the Acting the New SAT I Math for each math section. Have fun!

Parents Start Teaching Reading Now

A great book and resource for parents. It is so important to get children involved with books early on. No better way is to read to them and interact with them and at the same time teach them reading skills. One of the best books that I know of is a delightful story of a caterpillar who goes to school in Life's Little Lessons: An Inch-By-Inch Tale of Success. Most importantly there is a 10 page reading guide for parents at the end of the book that is invaluable... a great opportunity to interact and teach children early comprehension and thinking skills.

Just like some things can only be learned through experience, some books cannot be summarized. They must be READ. Trelease's Read-Aloud Handbook is one such book. There is no short-cut.

This book is chock-full of "Wake up, America: We're killing our readers!" statistics and anecdotes. Parents and Educators of all levels need to read and, in the words of Kevin from Freak The Mighty (Scholastic Signature): "Be Amazed."

The gist is, nothing in education is more important than the goal of creating lifelong readers. Besides the duh-factor of not being able to do anything else in academics if one is not truly literate, for the good of society, for the good of our posterity, for our own personal gain, nothing replaces lifelong reading. And yet, in Chapter 1, Trelease demonstrates to the readers that "By twelfth grade, only 19 percent read anything for pleasure daily." In Trelease's own words: "Any business that kept losing that much of its customer base would be in bankruptcy."

I am a parent. I am a teacher. From both standpoints, I can tell you that Trelease is absolutely, completely and totally correct. Education must be built on the foundation of true literacy, and Trelease's argument is that true literacy cannot be attained without voluntary reading.

Therefore, once again, it is the moral and societal obligation of education to create lifelong readers.

I am only touching on one part of this significant work. Besides being monumentally important for parents and educators, it's actually a fairly interesting read. Trelease throws in the perfect balance of anecdotes and statistics to keep the reader entranced. And while the bibliography for recommended read-alouds is in now way comprehensive, it is certainly a great place to start.

This book is on my Top 10 list. If you're a parent, read it, and then ask the principal of your child's school to read it. Our future as a society might well depend upon it.

This is the book! What's more important than reading?!

This book is appropriate for every caring parent. I am a homeschooling mother of three and I can't recommend it highly enough. After reading the library's copy I had to buy my own copy, plus several for friends and family members who have kids. It is full of high-quality info and ideas about reading to children, and about them ultimately reading to themselves. There is also an organized and valuable "recommended books" list in the back. Wonderful!

I am a big advocate of teaching children reading early on by reading great stories and discussing them- this is the beginning of developing comprehension skillls and love for reading. Two pieces of children's literature with fabulous teaching guides for parents and or teachers written by two teachers are a must-have : Life's Little Lessons: An Inch-By-Inch Tale of Successand The Big Squeal: A Wild, True, and Twisted Tail. The stories and messages are wonderful and the bonus reading guide is invaluable. Read all three aloud and teach your children early these important skills.

Whether you are learning English as a second language or you are a writer or editor wanting to look up a little-known grammar rule, you will find that this comprehensive reference book is perfect for your needs. If you aren't sure if it will cover the topic(s) you're looking for, the author has the entire contents of the book online at grammarbook.com so you can take a look before you buy. She also presents a lot of extra information on her website for free [...] which is great for those who may not have the financial means to supply a classroom with books.

The rules and examples in this book are so clear and concise that I actually enjoy learning and reviewing English. Whenever my kids come home with a grammar, punctuation, capitalization, or homonym question, we grab The Blue Book, knowing we'll find a rule that will get us out of confusion. We love to challenge ourselves with all of the great quizzes provided also. I showed my children's teachers the book and now they are ordering it as a textbook for their classes. It takes hard work to make a subject seem easy. Jane Straus deserves high praise for achieving this.

While I appreciated the premise of the research outlined in this book, and have no doubt the approach recommended would be effective, I question the practicality for application in a classroom. It seems that it would take a considerable amount of planning and cumbersome documentation particularly with younger children or multiage classes. I plan to try to implement some of the suggestions and like the idea of working to help children establish their own definitions, moving away from traditional dictionary definitions that are only confusing for young students.

My first copy of Marieb's Anatomy and Physiology (4th Edition - 1997) was a gift. Even though I was too young to get into the nitty gritty of physiology at that time, I wore out the chapters on skeletal and muscular anatomy. Since then, this book has been one of my most prized reference texts. I refuse to part with my 4th edition which has served me well for so many years but I finally decided to update and get the 7th edition.

This is a fantastic text. The chapters have been updated to reflect the latest findings (ie: genetics) and the artwork is top-notch. Most importantly, the organization of the information is outstanding, making it very readable and a very reliable quick reference. There is an appropriate level of detail for undergraduate students as well as graduate/professional students. The text would not be overwhelming for a high-school age student if they are very interested in the subject. I have given other A&P texts a thorough review and none stand close to this work. You can expect future editions to continue improving, as Dr. Marieb has shown a real commitment to keeping this the top book on the market.

Not Done Right

Review Date: 2008-10-02
I give this 2 stars because the first part is good. They will list 30 to 40 words, with their translations, which are used in the short conversation stories that follow and it works well.

Then in Part 2 they got lazy and stupid. Part 2 is made up of much longer stories but suddenly the amount of words they list with translations goes down to as few as 15. Part 2 is about the history of France. By it's nature, it uses many words that you will rarely come across, and most aren't listed and translated with the story. There is a small dictionary in the back of the book where you can find some of these words but most are missing. Part two is also a dry and boring read because it covers the history of France which doesn't do anybody any good now. How about stories asking for directions or where a good restaurant is?

The authors apparently believe in some mystical power that if they teach you a few words, you will magically know all the words in French. For beginning French students, they should have used high usage common everyday words. Another stupid thing they did was give you exercises with questions and crossword puzzles but they don't provide the answers anywhere in the book.

This is just another example of a person or company out to make a buck. It almost appears like someone started the book with good intentions and then quit, so someone else stepped in and just slapped the rest of it together to get it done. You are better off getting a regular book written in French and using a dictionary to translate, because that is exactly what you will be doing with this one.

For those of you thinking it must be me because there are so many 5 star reviews, go read those 5 star reviews. Most of them say "Great Beginner Book", and then go on to say such things as "I just finished College French 101" or "good if you had French 101 or 102". How interesting. The only people saying it is a good beginner book are those people who aren't beginners.

Excellent Value - Accessible

This is an excellent self-teaching French language guide - and a good value for the price. The book is divided into three sections. The first section is a typical boy-girl 'let's learn about our two cultures' storyline. Nothing exciting here. But the second section is more interesting and consists of twenty-two short biographical and historical sketches (from Vercingetorix, Clovis, and Charlemagne through the two world wars and accounts of more recent figures like Estaing, Mitterand, and Chirac). These little essays are sufficiently interesting and accessible to almost make the reader forget that this is primarily a language learning effort. The third section offers four short stories by Daudet, Theuriet, Zola, and Maupassant. It's an excellent selection. There is real patriotic emotion in Daudet's 'La Derniere Classe' and the familiar, razor sharp irony of Maupassant's 'La Parure'. Throughout the Reader helpful vocabulary translations appear in the margins.

Review Date: 2008-06-08
I studied French for two years back in High School. It has been over 40 years since I have had any contact with French. This book is excellent for someone with a small amount of knowledge of the French language and is trying to rebuild their reading skills. There is a small dictionary in the back which helps with some of the words.

This book is laid out in such a way that you progress with each chapter. It is divided into three sections. The first section is simple french dialogue; the second section covers French figures in history and the third section has four short stories from well known french authors (Alphonse Daudet, Emile Zola, Andre Theuriet and Guy de Maupassant)

If you are looking for pronunciation assistance, this is not the book you want. If you are simply wanting to ease your way back into reading French. I highly recommend it.

With very little French (what I got from a phrasebook on holiday for a couple of weeks), I bought this book and started reading it on the train to work. It was great. It has a good lexicon in the back, and as you progress most new words appear in the margin with a translation. It still takes effort, but is a great way to get your vocab and reading up and running. I am now reading it again, as my French improves, and it is still improving my vocab and comprehension.

It has been the best book I have had as a beginner learning French.

This purchase was required by my grad school program. I am taking a class with a psychotic ex-English teacher. For instance we had to take a 35 question quiz on APA (I received a 34/35 thank you and thanks to this book:-) and it was an Intro to Teaching course...but anyway that is another story.

I was actually glad to have this book though once it arrived because it's everything, and I mean everything you could ever possibly encounter with regard to APA format, it's just exactly the information you need. Concise and to the point, with no unnecessary fluff. And because of its size it is really easy to carry around and flip through.

Also I recommend buying this on Amazon.com because they by far have the cheapest price (I checked 3 different places), no tax because I'm out of state and this is an online purchase and no shipping charges (for standard shipping on orders of $25+).

(Down with the Campus Bookstore! :-) I love Amazon; I've been a customer for a few years now and could not be more satisfied. They bring me joy!

After a 'vacation' I have gone back to school for my Masters. This little book is very helpful in citing and referencing. The sample refs inside the back cover make checking your references quick and easy. It is able to lay flat so you don't hold it open while using it. I find that thoughtful on the publisher's part. The sample paper's are nice too. They are a good review and also remind you that you will eventually have a finished paper that looks like an educated person wrote it. My Pocket Guide is at my elbow as I write this review because I just finished a paper and now I'm buying one of these for my best friend who just started back into a Bachelors program.

My daughter who is a struggling artists recommended this book to us. It's short, but packed with good thoughts about making art and coping with one's fears about the process. It's not only helpful for artists in dealing with their thoughts about why they make art, but also to their friends and relatives. The explanation of the essence art vs. craft (a topic that has long interested me) is excellent. The writing is clear and accessible. There are examples of how real artists in various genres have dealt with the basic problems of making art. The book works for both the professional artist as well as the amateur, regardless of medium.

This is a well designed textbook. Heavy on vocabulary, but presented in context. The DVD that accompanies it is very helpful for pronunciation and listening practice. Assumes a knowledge of Arabic script and the 150 vocabulary words presented in Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds, so if you haven't already gone through Alif Baa, I recommend starting there.

Great book.

No book, CD, DVD or other will ever teach anyone a language. However, this is the best that I have ever seen (but would still recommend using other materials to complement this combination of textbook/DVDs). The only disadvantage in my case is that it relies heavily on Egyptian Arabic instead of pure Modern Standard Arabic (but does throw in some regional dialect differences now and then, including that of Iraq). One should start with the "Alif Ba" series and buy the corresponding "Answer Keys". As good as it is, it was written to be used in a classroom setting; personally, I am using it for self-study and get help from Iraqi friends. Like any language, there is a need for much repetition and most people will have moments of frustration when they are tempted to quit. I congratulate the authors on an outstanding job. (One person I know, who may have a knack for languages but is a native speaker of English, is now able to hold basic conversation with Iraqis after ten months of study and has not even started Books 2 and 3!)

This product is by far the undisputed standard for learning how to read, write & speak arabic. I have purchased many others before buying this one, including 'teach yourself arabic' and 'living language complete arabic' but they fell far short of expectations.

The text is thorough and is filled with challenging and interesting exercises. The DVDs complement the text very well, and make the learning experience more interactive and interesting. The native speakers featured are excellent and the dialogues relevant. One of the best features of this course is the positioning of standard arabic alongside egyptian colloquial arabic. I found this especially helpful as over the years, I have developed a basic command of spoken egyptian arabic and had no idea what the standard equivalent was. This course has given me the ability to differentiate between both and switch accordingly depending on the situation.

I would recommend this course to anyone interested in learning arabic without hesitation. Other courses I have purchased in the past are far inferior and do not even compare to this one.
