For a relatively short book this is an extremely comprehensive, practical, and accessible guide to case studies in education. Since reading it for my dissertation, I've referred to it several times for other projects. I've also strongly recommended it in my classes and for students conducting their theses. It gives both the hows and whys of case studies...motivational and informative.

I recommend this book for anyone with zero or nearly zero knowledge about qualitative research and case study. Even though the majority of the examples are for education field, the generic explanation is very clear. The book guided me step by step by giving bit by bit necessary information regarding the topic.
This book is an exhibit of the author's experiences in the topic as well as her mastery of the story-telling flow without trapped in informal way of writing. The author did very well in explaning "new" terms, so that novice reader does not need to struggle to understand the qualitative research and case study research jargon.
However, there are some shallow discussions on some parts, like computer tools for data management. The author, however, provided an array of further reading materials to consult.
My advice is if you confused by any other books or any description about the topic, especially about the jargon, read this book. When you finish this book, and you return to read those other books, your earlier confusion will disappear.

This book is okay and only okay. It's not very practical; it does not really teach you how to teach a foreign language. The book errs regarding its definitions of language acquisition versus language learning. It is apparent to me as a reader and as a teacher that the author has not spent enough time in an actual classroom with actual language learners. The book is also lacking a 'why'. Why learn a new language? Why does this matter to students today? As any parent or teacher will tell you, why is the first, last and most asked question. "Ways With Words," by Shirley Brice Heath, has a lot more helpful information when it comes to language learning than this text.

No book can cover every aspect of language instruction, but by all means Hadley's work would be right up there with Ellis, Richards and Rodgers among others. This is a solid book, jam packed with historical facts and insights, and I feel has caught the full heart of the profession representing the current state of the profession. I could not disagree with the first reviewer more. I am reading this book through and I love this book. This is not a technique-y book at all but a serious treatise and contribution to educators who want to have a broader scope on theory and instruction. In my mind, the author answers the who, what, where, when, how, and why not just of one method but does it with several of the major methods. And this she does in Chapter three! This is a 512 page text and to my mind, the reading is coherent, smart, and digestable. This text is certainly one of the better foundational texts for comprehensive grasp of the field. This book is be a springboard to assist the reader to think through the past and present assumptionan about teaching language; it is an excellent choice! If I were to only have one text to me to read in this area, this would be a top contender. Thank you Alice Omaggio Haddley for the hard work and care you put into this wonderful book.

This text is chock full of relevant information for langauge educators and language educators to be. I especially enjoy the online workbook which is an amazing commplement to an informative text such as this. I appreciate the author's inclusion of numerous schools of thought for those who might be new to this information. Great tertiary level text

I remember using it in a course I took a few years ago, and I was thrilled to find so many different aspects of language teaching covered in one volume. When I was thinking of buying the present edition, I asked a friend, someone with a Master's degree in TESL/TEFL, her recommendation, and she said: "Well, Doug Brown recommended it to me." So I bought Teaching Language in Context, and am very glad I did.

This book is aimed at explaining proficiency oriented language teaching, and has very valuable material on proficiency and its importance. This is something many teachers seem to overlook as too obvious to be of concern, but Hadley shows it to be a central issue in teaching. The criticism made by one reviewer that it's tilted too much toward communicative teaching is mistaken. There's a difference between communicative teaching and proficiency oriented teaching, although they are obviously related. This book, like any other, is not sufficient by itself, but needs to be read an compared to others in order to get a range of viewpoints. It is not of instantaneous practical use to classroom teachers, but rather deals with the ideas behind teaching methods. It is a very valuable addition to a teacher's bookshelf and I have no regrets about buying it.

The book was sold as used,and I was expecting a few marks on the book. The book I received was in NEW condition. There were no markings on the book,the pages were not"dog eared", and the cover pages was still shinny. In fact I had to remove the gummy substance left behind by the original price tag. GREAT VALUE! for the money.

The delivery was faster that I expected, I received it within four days.

I highly recommend AARON MARTIN as a seller, and look forward to doing business with him in the future!

This book was fabulous. It clearly sets up a classroom management plan and it goes through step by step how to set it up in the classroom. Even if you decide not use their counting system, one can still benefit from the practice in identifying, setting, and following through on limits.

Teachers are Pivotal for Learner-Centeredness to Occur

Finally... I found an author and educator who states the obvious. In order to be a successful teacher, one has to first understand oneself as a person - the positive and negative aspects of our personality and identity that impact our instruction. Only by understanding these issues are teachers freed to "move the learner to the center".

Borich does an outstanding job utilizing a friendly, conversational manner of writing that easily engages the reader. Research seems to be placed in a better context when Borich "keeps it real" for the reader.

I especially appreciate his chapter on questioning strategies, a blatent area of weakness for many beginning and veteran teachers alike. He even extends questions techniques into promoting thinking and problem solving.

Finally, Borich successfully articulates the value of group collaboration often overlooked by teachers hooked on cooperative learning. One cannot exist without the other or student accountablily will drop and student frustration will prevail.

This is a must read book for any teacher trainer in search of research to support effective teaching methods.

I have read many methods books over the past 4 years. This book was the initial text required in a methods class. I found it to be very poor in detail (especially for the preservice teacher). I finished the book wondering, "where are the specific how to's?" I felt that I wasn't prepared to go into a classroom to teach a lesson. We were all struggling in class.
So, I decided to go to another college bookstore and found "Methods for Effective Teaching" by Paul Burden. This book answered all my questions and went into great detail. It is based on the INTASC Standards and PLT of the Praxis.

A fabulous book for teachers. Also highly recommended are two lovely pieces of children's literature with beautiful messages and invaluable 10-page teaching guidesLife's Little Lessons: An Inch-By-Inch Tale of Successand The Big Squeal: A Wild, True, and Twisted Tail with built in lessons, activities and comprehension questions.

Seminal work on Reader's Workshop, but poor introduction to the method

Reading the Art of Teaching, it becomes clear that Calkins is not only a wonderful reading teacher but a thoughtful and skilled writer about reading. However, looking over the reviews here a reader will notice a divergence of opinion with many lavishly praising this book while others express extreme disappointment. In the end neither of them are really wrong.

Calkin's goal of the is simple to get students to "compose lives in which reading and writing matter", but obviously difficult to achieve. She is of the opinion, and offers research to support this opinion, that a Reading Workshop is the best way of achieving this goal. She explains the ingredients for success in virtually all aspects of a Reading Workshop through her 500 plus pages. Her emphasis is on what to do rather than what not to do and she offers examples, normally quite entertaining, to demonstrate the theory she is talking about.

So in this sense the book is a large success. Calkin clearly understands the Reader's Workshop and is going to be able to help any teacher craft a framework for such a workshop.

However, this speaks to the great short coming of the book. While Calkin presents the philosophy the hard work of implementing it falls largely on the shoulder of the reader. When she works with teachers in person this is no doubt for the best, as she is able to give feedback on how various teachers implement the program. However, no such dialogue can be had with a book and so the reader can easily finish the book understanding just how important the Reader's Workshop is, without the skills needed to actually implement one.

This book is an important piece of writing for the Reading Workshop teacher, however it serves as a poor introduction to the method. Upper elementary and middle school teachers would be better advised to start with Nancy Atwell's In the Middle: New Understanding About Writing, Reading, and Learning (Workshop Series), and her recent addendum to that work The Reading Zone: HOW TO HELP KIDS BECOME SKILLED, PASSIONATE, HABITUAL, CRITICAL READERS which while suffering from some of the same problems as Calkin has far more specific methods to use.

I read the first page of this book sitting on the floor of a book store. The next thing I knew it was 30 minutes later, and I didn't want to put the book down. I knew it needed to go home with me.

Calkins takes Reading instruction, breaks it down into manageable parts that she used in her own classroom and shares with you realistic, artful and purposeful ideas for teaching reading. She speaks very openly and honestly with you as a teacher who believes in teaching reading not as a science, but rather as an art. It is an amazing book that will transform the way you think about reading instruction even in simple ways. You will love reading it and want to apply her teaching strategies immediately.

This book is very helpful to any elementary teacher that is looking for ways to improve your reading curriculum. Lucy Calkins gives plenty of ideas and new approaches to try in your classroom. I also appreciate how she writes the actual scenario she used in the classroom with real kids. It is so much easier to comprehend through real life experiences. Another book that is similar, very informative and full of GREAT ideas is Reading Essentials by Regie Routman. This is a must read as an educator.

Stropus and Taylor's _Bridging the Gap Between College and Law School: Strategies for Success_ offers far more than just advice on test preparation, notetaking, and case briefing. Though the most popular -- and responsible -- advice to the incoming "1L" is not to worry about law school the summer preceding, it is a rare law student that does not. For those that insist on preparing in some way (as I did before I entered), it is far more appropriate to learn HOW to do well in law school than to try and "pre-learn" torts, civil procedure, or contracts. While there are quite a few books on the market that attempt this, Bridging the Gap provides step-by-step instructions *and* subsequent exercises -- a combination not found elsewhere.

Furthermore, Bridging the Gap addresses how to solve the inevitable problems that a 1L faces throughout his/her first year; other books simply note them and move on.

While many of the products on the market try and prepare the incoming law student for his/her first year, their utility ends on the first day of school. Bridging the Gap, through clear and specific advice pertinent to the entire experience, is a resource that students will turn to (get it?) from August till May.
