This is a book about getting more from the college experience.
Suggestions such as write for the school newspaper, volunteer, attend political rallies, advice on summer employment (he advocates getting a job in the field you are interested in working as career), etc.
There are some study tips covered as well.
The author has another book called, "How to Become a Straight A Student" that is very good at discussing ways to improve your grades and live a balanced life too.

This little gem has been a boon to both my current college students. I now give the book as a HS graduation present. It proveides very wise tips on how to continue that streak of success that the colleges loved enough to admit your student in the first place. A positive road map with both common sense and forward looking ideas to enter the real world.

If you're looking at reviews for this book then you're likely looking for some insight into the college process on a deeper level than surface-level advice. In that case, you should undoubtedly get this book.
I'm going to college next year, and I'm the type of person who copes with things by reading about them. Books like this book are the reason I do that. It's clear and easy to read, it's direct, it's straightforward, and best of all, it's full of simple advice that can dramatically improve one's college experience. It provides this advice without being pretentious- the book's title turned me off at first, and while the author certainly has a very pragmatic approach to college life, he decries resume-padding and the like.
I've recommended it to many of my classmates, and it will serve as a sort of bible for me next year. As much as it's helpful on a practical level, it's helped me in another way, too. I went looking for books because I was nervous about next year. This book helped reassure me by encouraging me to focus on the exciting aspects rather than the unnerving ones. If only I could get such a powerful effect every time I spent ten dollars.

**UPDATED --- now 5 stars
Cal Newport's passion for the subject is transparent. Writing as an experienced, well-researched "big brother," Newport avoids being didactic while imparting advice he clearly believes in.
The advice is, quite simply, great. From the attitude to the study techniques, Newport covers a good majority of what a college student needs to accomplish in order to win as per his interpretation. For any freshman or sophomore looking to become one of those all-around stars on campus -- for anyone ambitious -- I highly recommend this book.
Some of the advice is, at first, overwhelming. However, it is all very, very true and tested. As Cal would say about any assignment, let it simmer in the background of your mind for a while. You will realize how prescient his advice is.
Thanks Mr. Newport for the great advice!

I bought this for a writing class I am required to take before I graduate. It is a great resource. I remember buying these when I was just a little freshman and they were never of much worth to me. This one is spiral bound, so it lays flat, it has sample papers to show you exactly how to use the format you need and many exercises that I have admittedly never touched. It will be a good resource for undergrads, graduate students or anyone who is interested in writing a research paper. It also has ample information on how to document electronic sources, which most guides tend to skimp on.

I bought this book sight unseen as a desk reference and I am sorry that I did. Technically, it is good reference guide - not the best. There are many concepts and terms that are not explained in the body of the text. Rather, as you are reading up on a particular topic and you come across some grammer term, nstead of defining it there, you are forced to flip through the glossary at the end of the text.
Example, page 100: "Forms of the verb that end in -ing, called gerunds..." Well, he author never mentions the fact that gerunds are used as nouns. This you learn from going to the glossary (P. 555)
This sort of thing happens all the time. Ahhhh!!
My second issue has to do with the excessive number of mind-numbing number of practice exercises. They alone take up 30% to 40% of the text. I think it is a great idea to practice what you are trying to learn but guess what? There is no answer key provided.
Why is it that you can get a solutions manual (at leaset odd number)to every math text ever produced but every other discipline restricts them to instructors only. It is so, so annoying. If anyone knows how to get resources reserved for instructors, please let me know.
Bottomline, you are not getting your money's worth with this writer's reference guide. Muriel, I expected better from your textbook.

I use Becky Bailey's Conscious Discipline system in my classroom and it is amazing the differences it can make. But I got this book to help parents see it from the 'home' view as well. she does an excellent job going through this process step by step and giving many different solutions to common discipline problems. I love it!

We got this book a few weeks ago on the advice of a friend who is an early childhood education specialist, and we have been following the suggestions given by the author. My husband and I have seen positive changes in ourselves, our relationship with each other, and our relationship with our daughter. It takes patience, but the techniques really work over the longer term (it took us about a week to begin to feel that our daughter was less resistant to us, and that we were all working together). And some of the author's suggestions will work immediately. I highly recommend this book.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who may be having these type of issues.

I purchased this book expecting oodles of great ideas...One great thing is the way that it organizes themes with each unit broken down into days and learning centers. However, the actual ideas are pretty general and although some are interesting, I have definitely found better ones- some of them don't even seem to correlate with the theme they are listed under...
I did get some good ideas, but would suggest 2 much better options for the money that provide more themed ideas with details rather than just general activities. Try: "The Complete Daily Curriculum" by: Pam Schiller and Pat Phipps AND "Creative Resources for the Early Childhood Classroom" by: Judy Herr

I was disappointed with this book, if I had flipped through it before buying I don't think I would have bought it. I was expecting step by step instructions for activities but rather it seems very general. I think a lot of the ideas seem obvious. The GOOD thing is that it is grouped and organized for you. I admit that I need to spend some more time with the book and give it another chance, maybe I'll change my mind. But the two books that I can't live without, in my preschool class (3 year olds), are R IS FOR RAINBOW (Anselmo Rollins and Schuckman) and YEAR ROUND ACTIVITIES FOR THREE YEAR OLD CHILDREN (Anthony Coletta and Kathleen Coletta).
I don't think this is an awful book, but I was disappointed, that's all.

I run a daycare and bought these books to help guide our daily activities. I've only been using it for a few weeks, but love it. I also bought the Daily Curriculum book co-authored also by Pam Schiller, who helped write this one. They have a lot of similar things, but enough different that I kept them both. There is lots of ideas in the book for kids with varying interests and it's made planning educational stuff a lot easier for me.

The book was sold as used, and I was expecting a few marks on the book. The book I received was in NEW condition. There were no markings on the book, the pages were not"dog eared", and the cover pages was still shinny. In fact I had to remove the gummy substance left behind by the original price tag. GREAT VALUE! for the money.
The delivery was faster that I expected, I received it within four days.
I highly recommend AARON MARTIN as a seller, and look forward to doing business with him in the future!

This book offers beautiful, short snippits of character building stories and pictures about boys all inspired by passaged from Proverbs. Having 4 sons myself, I've come to cherish the little sticky fingers and dandelion arrangements given to me over the years. This book allows you to snuggle with your little one and appreciate what God has given you while enjoying the beautiful pictures and wisdom of Authors Jim and Elizabeth George.

My son is not even two yet and this is one of his favorites. I have read several "Proverbs" to him from the book every night for the past 6 months or so and now he asks for the book before nap time too! If I forget to read it to him before bed, he reminds me by saying "boys." The pictures are fabulous and because the proverbs are made into poems, it's appropriate for even very young little boys. I am thinking of buying a copy to take apart and frame some of the pictures (& poems) for his bedroom. If you're looking for a book that teaches great character, you've found it!

This is an outstanding books for little boys! I've given two: at each of my grandson's baby dedications. It has a place to write a special message to commemorate the date and occasion for giving, and I think it is a book that will truly grow up with the child and be a treasured keepsake. The illustrations are beautifully rendered in soft watercolors and has that old time look of little boys in days gone by. The values reinforced here (whether you are Christian or not) are what we all desire for our little men to learn so that they will grow up to be men of character. FIVE STARS!!!!!!!!
