As a homeschooling mom of three boys I have searched long and hard for a book that would give me ideas for P.E. class. This P.E. series is the answer to my prayers. It includes hundreds of activities, fully explained and illustrated including a list of required equipment. Although some activities are for big groups, there are lots of activities for one or two children. They include lesson plan suggestions and blank lesson plans for making up your own. Some of the lessons involve using equipment not likely to be found in the home but a great deal of the lessons involve very simple materials like hoola hoops, balls, bean bags, etc. I highly recommend this series for homeschoolers!

This book has an abundance of great PE games and activities for teachers who have little experience or familiarity teaching PE right up to different ways of teaching mandatory skills for the experienced teacher. Many of the activities need few or no equipment which is good for many teachers who work in schools with few resources. I highly recommend this book to any early primary teacher.

We had to read this book for an English class, and I was thinking ugh, a nonfiction book. We only had to read a handful of articles, but almost everybody in the class read the whole thing. This is truly awesome.

An Educator's Review

I had the honor to see Ms. Connors speak at a teacher conference this past week. I was feeling a bit jaded over the profession of teaching after completing my second year of teaching and after completing a research study proposal on the sad state of teacher retention due to low administrative support. I was at an oh-too-typical low point...

Ms. Connors' words (both in spoken and written form--I flew through her book after listening to her speech) really hit home. This is a book that every teacher and every administrator should read. It gives simple solutions that could and would make a big impact upon the current state of education today. I encourage every person involved in teaching students to read this book and think about the roles they currently play and the role they could play. THANK-YOU MS. CONNORS for humorously yet seriously pointing out both the problem and the necessary solutions.

As a first grade teacher I used this book as an intervention tool with my ELL students last year. It helped with voacbulary as well as phonics. The activities are hands on and we were able to create several games using the lessons as well. I recommend this book to anyone in the primary grades. It is great as an intervention tool, large group activity or as a center.

This concept keeps kids interested. They want to figure out the little words and the big words created by the letters, so it's an excellent one for phonics. If you already use Open Court, it would be a good supplement. There is some prep time involved in writing and cutting the letters, unless you're smarter than me and use die-cut letters from a bulletin board!!

Christian Science on Steroids?

Review Date: 2008-07-31
The Life and Teachings of the Masters of the Far East was just given to me by a Buddhist friend. I had never heard of Beard T. Spalding. What struck me the most is the similarity of these teachings - even in the phrases and words used - to Christian Science. It almost strikes me as plagiarism. Or is that a huge coincident?

Nonetheless, these books are fascinating and great food for thought and inspiration. Christian Science on steroids. It also reminded me of The Autobiography of a Yogi - a book I plan to re-read, after I re-read Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy.

Wake up!

Review Date: 2008-04-30
Okay folks, it's time to wake up. First, it's been written on good authority that Spalding wrote the first three volumes of this "fantasy" before he ever left the United States, later admitting having visited these "masters" while in his astro-body. And then there is the overall racist tone to his writing. I am amazed no one has yet to mention this in a review (at least none that I've read). Spirituality based on racism is not true spirituality. If I could give it less than a single star, I would. Wake up America!

Review Date: 2008-07-11
It was my first "for dummies" book and most probably the last. The book is big and empty; the author should have used at most 50 pages. The CD contains short musical clips that you've probably heard before or you can download for free. I gave it two stars because the book actually helps a small tiny bit contrary to its size.

I recommend instead "Alfred's Group Piano for Adults" it's much better but I'm not sure if it's the best one out there.

Review Date: 2007-10-01
This is an excellent book for teaching yourself piano. All the reviewers who slam this book for corny humor can go jump in a lake. There are plenty of serious music books that just shovel out the facts in a dry manner, so if that is what you want, fine, no reason to get uptight about a book that trys to use a more human touch. I want to also make it clear that the book does not tell jokes per say, so you dont have to read through long groaners to get to the material. The author simply interjects personal examples. Its a technique that is used in all the dummies books, if you dont like it, dont read dummies books.

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-16
I just finished my Freshman year at college, and I am lucky enough to be at a college that allows its students to take AP tests through their senior year in order to get out of General Education requirements. My school has this nasty World History requirement so I decided to try my hand at the AP World History test.

I'd heard in the past that the "5 Steps to a 5" books are amazing, so I decided to make it my sole study guide for the test. Granted, being a college student, I had a ton of homework and didn't have time to study this AP book during the school year. To make matters worse, the AP test was right after my college finals ended. So, I was exhausted and only had 2 full days to read/skim/study this book.

As much as history books tend to bore me, this book was a very easy (and interesting!) read and everything clicked in my head after reading it only once (trust me, that doesn't typically happen!) The book's change/continuity charts were super helpful not only in reviewing for the CCT essay but as an easy way to cram. Also, the book essentially tells you the bare minimum you need to know for the test.

I got to the test super nervous, thinking I didn't know anything, but unbeknownst to me, this book prepped me so well, I flew through the test and scored a 5.

If you want a book that will teach you to pass the AP World History test in the easiest way possible, THIS IS THE BOOK YOU WANT!

While using the 5 Steps to a 5 AP World History 2008-2009 edition I was Very glad at the fact that they had several Charts at the End of Each Time Period or Time Frames that the AP college Board has chosen. At the End of Each Time period they had a chart that was organized with different regions ex. middle east , Southeast Asia, and Almost all Major Regions. This Chart Helped because it gave Political, Economic, and Social Changes and Also CONTINUITES that occurred in that region. It Was an idle Book for quick review not Very Very Detailed But if you were Paying attention in Class very worth While. Its a Quick Skim of things and is great for those last week Review worksheets.

This book was my favorite (as written by a homeschool mom) to describe the Charlotte Mason philosophy and how one can use it in a practical way to teach their own children at home.

It is not only easy to read but a charming book. I have passed it on to my oldest child, who has begun homeschooling her daughter and son.

A book that makes the ideal childhood including education feasible and practical to implement. It shows that education does not have to take place in a chair and behind a desk. It shows that learning takes place all the time and the most important lessons are taught outside of textbooks.

Full of direction and inspiration!!

Review Date: 2008-03-12
This book gave me more inspiration, enthusiasm and direction for homeschooling than I ever expected to have with my oldest child still just two years old. Written by Karen Andreola, an intelligent, well-written and passionate mother who has homeschooled three children Charlotte Mason-style, the thrust of the book is not how to mold intellectually superior children (though that may be a natural result :) but rather how to nurture their natural curiosities and cultivate in them a love of learning. Reading "whole" or "living" books is foundational to this method, that is, books written by authors who have a personal passion for the subject, an enthusiasm that the reader may catch. Charlotte Mason is critical of most textbooks as they are over-stuffed with information compiled by committees aiming to meet generalized standards of what a child should learn in a particular grade. Charlotte felt that to know about something was not the same as knowing it personally. "Children are educated by their intimacies," was an oft-repeated theme which Charlotte was convinced of. A necessary partner to the reading of whole books is the "narration" of them, when a child is asked to re-tell what they have learned in their own words. Naturally the child will begin to incorporate the words of their authors into their own vocabularies. As they get older, they may narrate in both written and oral forms. In a child's early years (the first 6), no formal schooling is recommended but rather abundant play and exploration in nature, that they might experience the world through the five senses, as well as songs and books and practice at helpfulness in the home. Most importantly, Charlotte Mason recognizes Christ in her theories, placing spiritual formation as central to the child's education "...because knowledge without virtue is nothing to God."
A perfect compliment to this book in its emphasis on spiritual formation in the home: "Family Driven Faith," by Voddie Baucher.

Am I the only one who hates this book???

Review Date: 2008-05-01
If you've read the Charlotte Mason 6 volume set, there is no need for this companion book. My hope in reading this book was to get a modernized take on Miss Mason's educational theories. I was sadly disappointed. I find this book to be just about as victorian as the original. I do believe that the CM method will work in today's homeschools, but let's be honest, my children (and my home for that matter) look nothing like the rosy picture painted by Karen Andreola. I was hoping this book would break down the meat of CM's philosophy into what works for the modern home. I guess I'll have to do that myself.
