I just finished reading the book today in preparation for teaching my DD9. I learned so much about the different countries of the world and why they are & how they came to be. I had been taught other ideas on certain subjects, but learned the history behind events in a different way through this book. I look forward to teaching my DD about the last 150 years with this resource.

There is no doubt that this series is well written. My son read each of the four books in the span of less than a week. They really piqued his interest. These books will let you know what really turns on your child, but you'll need to go on for further, more in-depth review.

Can't recommend this series enough for the pre-teen set!

This was a good review for elementary children. It is not an in-depth study of any point in particular but it is an excellent overview of historical events. It is easy reading and gives information that makes history come alive. However, it is not a history book, which is why it is such good reading and a wonderful overview. If you want a lot of information about a particular event or time, then you need an additional text.

I'm new to soapmaking and decided to take the plunge as soon as I received my book. I decided to make Anne's Shea Butter Supreme (page 35) - Oh my! It turned out and it's lovely to use. I can't believe I can make my very own soap. This book is very informative and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book for beginners.
Anne, you are a genius - thank you! : )

I've purchased other books on soapmaking. This is the best I've read. It gives you the basics and encourages you to go for it. I was apprehensive to purchase this book because it was so small; but it just proves the saying that "good things come in small packages." Start with this one first!

I enjoyed Anne's laid back, but very informative writing style. I had no experience making soap, and my first batch turned out really nice -thanks to the clear directions and explanations about how to work with lye, etc.

I was inspired to make soap when my daughter shared some shea butter soap with me that she had bought at a farmer's market and because I was concerned about the chemicals in the products we were using.

I read a great deal about making cold process soap during the 2 years I was making melt and pour soap and gathering equipment. It seemed scary and complicated. Everyone said something different and there was lots about "rebatching" soap batches that didn't turn out well.

When I finally had all of my equipment and the only thing stopping me was clear directions and a bit of fear, I read reviews of soap making books on Amazon. This was the book that I was most impressed with from reading the reviews so I ordered it. I shall be eternally grateful that I did.

I have made 2 batches of soap from Anne's shea butter recipe, one of them a bug repellent soap, and they have both turned out perfect. Now I've created 2 of my own recipes using her information and instructions, to use up some extra oils I have, and feel completely confident that they will turn out well. Before reading her book I couldn't imagine creating my own recipes at all, much less this soon.

And like she says, you should never have to "rebatch" a batch of soap. I, too, have read the book several times and continue to reference the excellent information regarding creating your own recipes. I can't say enough good about this book, for either an aspiring or an experienced soap maker. I no longer fear making soap, but find it a totally awesome experience now and feel fantastic every day as I use the soap I've made.

If you're the least bit interested in making soap I would strongly suggest that this be the first book you purchase for your soap making library.

I've had my own business since 1998, but it's only been in the past few years, since learning about info-marketing, where my business has really taken off. This book gives you a great overview on this very lucrative industry. The beauty of info-marketing is you can build a business from scratch around it, or add it as a income stream to your current business. Robert Skrob, one of the authors, does an excellent job of not just telling you about info-marketing but showing you, through the use of many case studies, how you can integrate it in your business. If you've never heard of info-marketing, or your idea of info-marketing is writing a book, then the Official Get Rich Guide to Information Marketing is a must-read for you.

This is a great book for learning what to do if you're interested in the world of information marketing or want to boost your success in that area. Almost every page has a website to refer to for more information, helpful contacts for services you might need and specific examples of other information marketers have done successfully in their businesses. It was actually information overload!

The best way to implement the ideas and strategies is to just focus on one area at a time...or hire Dan Kennedy to do it for you.

The books offers some good overview and examples of successful infopreneurs, however for someone who wants the nitty gritty details, the book fell short. I couldn't help but feel this book was part of the "funnel selling system" designed to upsell me to a more expensive product. Its too bad because there is woefully few books with complete details on info products in the Internet age.

I am a high school chemistry teacher. This book is by far the best I've seen at introducing chemical issues AND rudimentary chemistry at the same time. It is very heavily text-based, and there is minimal math. However the dense reading must be taken slowly by some students-- especially younger students with challenged reading levels. This book is perfect for conceptual or environmental chemistry classes, and the exercises promote deep and analytical thinking. The definitions are lightly highlighted, and there are valuable web resources and links within the text as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about how chemistry applies to global climate change, acid rain, and alternative energy. Excellent!

This is a book that you will want to pass around. I gave it to my daughter and her husband and they in turned have someone else that is interested in reading it after them. Some chapters are rather boring to keep reading but if you stick with it there are great truths to be found. If applied in your family, they WILL make a positive difference in your lives. We as a family have been doing most of what is suggested in the books since we have had children, my oldest being 25 years old. All 4 children are serving God and being a blessing for those around them. This book contains Great Truths that are Needed in the Church Today!

Interesting a reviewer said Baucham teaches "Beating kids=good! Evolution=Bad!" ...it tells you right there that reviewer has succumbed to the culture that Baucham ironically warns people against (the culture says spanking=beating kids and macroevolution=fact). For everyone else, this book shows Christians how our practices have been influenced by the culture (rather than the other way around) and how those practices are unbiblical. I myself have been sounding that call as well, but Baucham sheds light on some additional issues that I hadn't considered. It is eye-opening and revolutionary.

By the way, a couple reviewers expressed their concerns about Vision Forum Ministries...but what about their philosophy is unbiblical? If everything should be scrutinized by the light of His Word, then make sure your criticism of Vision Forum is based on Scripture and not just "It makes me uncomfortable." When Jesus preached, most of what He said made people uncomfortable. "Lack of comfort" is not a sufficient excuse to criticize a ministry or philosophy unless you can also back up your criticism with Scripture (taken in context, of course).

Attention Christian father: You are deceiving yourself if you think you are doing your best by faithfully dropping your kids off to youth group every week. You won't know how far off the mark you are until you read this thoughtful, passionate and biblically-supported work. This book will tell you why we are losing 8 out of 10 of our "church kids" by the time they finish their sophomore year of college. But thankfully, Pastor Baucham shows us how to reverse this alarming trend. This book, along with his podcast message, "The Centrality of the Home", will jolt you into action. Don't wait; your children's eternity is at stake.

Jeremiah 6:10
To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the LORD is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.

First things first, if you find this book "offensive" ask yourself "why" I respectfully disagree with the critics, specifically the one comparing this to a "cult". That is a strong and hateful statement and it is the FURTHEST from the truth. I recommend to read the book along with the scriptures that Dr. Baucham's uses to back it up and let the Holy Spirit convict you (or not).

I actually met Dr. Baucham's son Trey - what a pleasure to meet this young man. The fruit is there!! Unless you've met this man and seen the fruit that he is producing, I strongly suggest you reserve your harsh judgement of him. Pluck the plank out of your on eye first.

Take the time to read what Dr. Baucham has to say and to spiritually discern the message that is being given. Let God speak to you in how this message is applicable to your family and/or what principles you need to apply. It won't be the same for everyone.

Scripture says:

2 Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

Make sure you're not letting your "itching ears" be your guide, rather let God convict you in areas that you need to be convicted in. This book IS a wake up call. RISE UP and take the challenge!

Vision Forum Cult strikes again-Don't waste your money

Luckily I didn't buy this book, I found it discarded in the trash area in the waiting room of my children's gymnastics studio. I thought it looked interesting so I read through it. I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it. This is just a rehash of the Vision Forum Cult's mandate of modern Christian family life. Homeschooling=Good! Youth Groups=Bad! Beating kids=good! Evolution=Bad! I think his basic premise, that parents need to seriously undertake their children's spiritual education and growth and not abdicate them to other people is correct to some degree, but his book just meanders and goes down the path that all these VF cult members drone on and on about ad nauseum in their internet blogs. (How can they homeschool all the time while writing all these blogs?) Don't buy this book, save your money and take your kids out for ice cream. My understanding is that Dr. Baucham's children have not graduated college yet and are, in fact, fairly young, so I have a hard time accepting him as an "expert" in the field of parenting. Further, he bills himself as an evangelical for intellectuals, but he left Rice University to transfer to HBU? That wasn't a move up. Maybe he seems intellectual to someone who graduated from Patrick Henry College, or to the Duggars, but I think that particular claim is inflated. By the way, homeschooling is no guarantee that your kids won't turn 18 and go crazy. You can't keep them in the compound forever, can you? Unless you are in the FLDS compound that is. The only "magic forumula" (tongue in cheek) is prayer for your children, not a rehash of the Vision Forum Cult indoctrination manuals.

This is a very insightful and well constructed book. There is a TON of information. It does lean heavily on food storage, dedicating nearly 2/3 of its 315 pages to various facets of food (production, preservation, storage). The remaining 100+ pages discuss things like clothing/bedding; Heat, cooking and light, Medical/dental; sanitation/personal care; communication, etc.
There are more than 2 dozen checklists which are very comprehensive and detailed. In my opinion these checklists combined with the nearly 20 pages of resources (pp 295-314) and other books recommended (chapter 31 - Survival Library pp 297-304) make the book worth purchasing. However - this great strength can also be a weakness, make sure the copy you buy is current. The first and second printings were back in the 1980's and don't contain updated resource lists ( a lesson I learned when purchasing Making the Best of Basics by James Talmadge Stevens). The older editions, I suspect are equally useful resources but won't have the very best part of the book.

The author is very specific on figuring the amounts of each food types to store based on caloric needs of your age group and reminds you to think ahead and anticipate changes as a person or child ages. As a nurse I feel this information is critical to overall health as he includes the number of calories needed per age. He also recommends that you store a variety of foods as well as 'treat' foods to compensate for a change in your diet that might eliminate our fast food habits. This book will guide you in creating a pantry suited to your own family. I highly recommend this book for the details it provides in all areas of long term food storage.

I enjoyed this book very much. This is a reference book and a book of facts and useful imformation. The writing style is dry. I get a little nuts when I buy a book about home preparedness and there are chapter's about making arrowheads and how to skin a rabbit and how to make a fire by rubbing two sticks together. If things every get this bad, I don't want to live anyway. However, in Mr. Sprigarelli's book, you won't find nutty stuff like making arrowheads. It's smart stuff and to the point. It's worth the money. Regards, Keith Renick, Peachtree City, Ga.

I have a personal copy of this book and thought so highly of it that I tried to buy one for my son. Amazon was temporarily out of stock so I made an online purchase directly from the authors. Guess what, that was in December and it is April now and the book was never sent. The authors have responded to email inquiries and promised to send the book. However they have never followed through and also have never bothered to send a refund. Maybe they are having a crisis of their own, in which case maybe they aren't all that well prepared after all. If you must have it, buy from Amazon or another credible source.

I am not the most creative person when it comes to packed lunches, but this book makes it easy! Many ingredients are easily found, and likely to be in your fridge or pantry already. Many you can make with leftover foods such as cooked chicken, or the 2 tablespoons of corn left over from dinner. Most are items my daughter will readily eat without complaint. For health reasons, we decided to stop eating cafeteria food and started packing our own. I ran out of ideas rather quickly and knew we had to break away from PB&J, so I ordered this book. What's great it that it's "adult friendly" too. No smiley face sandwiches or mac and cheese here...just healthy food made easy. Our kiddo is now the envy of the lunch room!

It's alright for a guide, but not to follow exactly...

Lunch Boxes and Snacks: Over 120 healthy recipes from delicious sandwiches and salads to hot soups and sweet treats

I ordered this book after seeing what fellow parents are sending to school with their kids. After looking through it, I think it will provide my soon to be kindergarten son healthier alternatives than other kids, but I only have one issue.

Almost all the sandwich recipes have mayonnaise in them. Not only is this not a healthier spread, but we cannot have mayonnaise in the house due to a severe allergy to it. I gave the book three stars for a fattier spread than other ones and not having healthier alternatives for the spreads.

Lunch Boxes and Snacks: Over 120 healthy recipes from delicious sandwhiches and salads to hot soups and sweet treats is a great guide for the end of boredom at school and at work. Everything here is packable, nutritious and wonderfully good-tasting.

The book includes information on how to keep food safe after it leaves your refrigerator and how to involve kids in the selection and process.

But, be advised that it is great for adults also. We get bored with everyday same-old same-old, too!

I purchased this book on a whim while food-shopping at a mega-market. I flipped through it over coffee and went right back to the aisles for some immediate meal transformations.

I don't regret purchasing it!

An excellent companion to chemistry lab work
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-19
There are many excellent theory books suitable for high school and early university chemistry courses but few really good practical manuals. Many lab manuals are ad hoc productions of variable quality geared to the school or college teaching the subject.

Robert Thompson's book is an excellent guide to performing interesting experiments that complement the theoretical instruction in a course.

Thompson discusses lab safety, how to obtain chemicals and equipment needed for the labs and potential legal hazards of some chemicals.

Chemistry cannot be learned effectively just in a classroom, it's necessary also to learn the planning, observational and manual skills required to become adept at preparing and mixing solutions and observing results. Also emphasised is the need to write up results so that they can be repeated later or by others.

This book is an excellent companion to a chemical lab course and well complements chemistry theory taught in the classroom. It would also be most useful to someone performing chemistry experiments as a hobby.

My son had been asking me about science experiments we could do at home. I had fond memories of my chemistry kit as a child, but found the current ones pathetic. I found this book to be the perfect remedy. The supporting web site is also a wonderful resource. We are just starting to slowly work through the projects. I expect this to be a great bonding experience as well as an educational experience.

An Excellent Chemistry Book

This book provides an excellent guide on how to learn about chemistry since chemistry sets like the one I had as a kid are no longer available. The author provides a great deal of chemical knowledge that I would loved to have had as a teenager. The experiments in this book are far more interesting than the ones that were in my chemistry set as a kid.

The one point I would make is that I would make is that many of these experiments are potentially dangerous. You should follow the author's safety advice to the letter. High school age students might do these experiments without adult supervision. Children any younger than that should have adult supervision.

More than funny smells, an invaluable must have book.

Many other reviewers have made comments about the demise of home chemistry sets and their youthful experiences. I echo many of the same thoughts. Without going in to the details suffice to say that I loved my chemistry set and still relish those youthful memories. I have long lamented the fact that you can no longer buy a decent home chemistry set. Thompson's book addresses this problem and fills a much needed niche. This by far the best book around if you want to setup your own chemistry lab and conduct experiments at home.

This is a real how to book that addresses the practical issues of setting up a chemistry lab and conducting experiments. In addition to the chapters that deal with the actual experiments, there are chapters on safety, equipment, and where to find chemicals. There is also good discussion about the disposal of chemicals and a realistic and practical discussion about the dangers of chemicals.

I've had a copy of the book for a couple of months. I've had the opportunity to read much of it and actually try some of the experiments. I don't have a lot of room for a lab but that hasn't stopped me from experimenting. I originally obtained the book for my son but I have to admit I find it more interesting and useful than he does. While he is interested in chemistry and has enjoyed out experiments he is too busy with other things to really get into it at the moment. I hope that will change after the summer ends and we settle in for the winter. I plan to incorporate chemistry into our home schooling program and this book is the perfect tool to help guide my efforts.

The bottom line is that this book is educational, practical and fun. I recommend it for anyone interested in learning about basic practical chemistry. If you are a parent and your child is interested in chemistry you need this book. It will be invaluable for home school parents who plan to teach chemistry and as a supplement for high school chemistry students. I would not be surprised to find that chemistry teachers adopted this book in their own curriculum.

Excellent in depth experiments

As one of the other reviewers wrote, this book has much more than what you would get with a typical chemistry "toy" kit. Everything is well explained in detail, from the level of quality and what equipment to buy, where to obtain chemicals, and the steps for each experiment. The experiments have a full explanation of process being investigated, questions and calculations to make real quantitative assessments.

At the behest of her dying grandmother, Shepard investigated her family's past in India and Pakistan. Her journey is a combination of revelation and research, with some intellectual discussions about the meaning of religion, family, and nationality, thrown in. Chapters alternate between Shepard's research and travels and accounts of her grandmother (her mother's mother,) who grew up a Jew in India and became the third wife of a Muslim businessman who moved to Pakistan after partition. Shepard's father is an American Christian. Her clear writing is full of insights, with many questions left for the reader to ponder.

Entertaining, Insightful Journey

Mesmerizing memoir, quirky nuanced story telling.

Engagingly discombobulated at times, yet microscopically real, as Shepard explores the nooks and crannies of India and Pakistan using her curiosity, camera and notebook to illuminate micro-cultural threads that weave the tapestry of her heritage. Full of fascinating exposure to Jewish Indians with unique roots and customs who lived harmoniously among Muslims and Hindus for generations. A stirring exploration into the diverse cultural palette of South Asia.

A book to read slowly to best savor the revelations that unfold with Shepard's entertaining and insightful journey full of detailed ambiance and discerning commentary.

Readers beware, as this book may have a lasting impact on your own desire to understand a little bit more about the influences of your own cultural legacy.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through this book. As a moderately experienced SQL Server developer, I find the book useful as an exam prep beause it briefly reviews and previews the information, although it relies on the reader already being somewhat familiar with the subject.

For example, the text explanations and code snippets are good, but there are very few screenshots or other figures.

Don't get this book if you don't already have some experience with SQL Server.

Do get this book as a review or summary of what you'll presumably need to know for the exam.

I bought this book because I had the opportunity to take a training course by one of the co-authors, Mike Hotek. Mike is an awesome teacher as well as writer. This book had very clear practical examples ranging from how to create a table to replication and database mirroring. I found that if you want to learn the just-above-the-basics of SQL 2005, this book is for you. Even if you don't know anything about SQL 2005, this book will give you an insight on how to get started.

The chapters are organized quite well, starting with how to install SQL 2005 and moving on to creating basic objects.

I would recommend this book for several reasons:
1) A great reference on basic SQL syntax as well as the main functions of SQL 2005
2) A great learning tool for the exam.
3) Easy to read and understand.

Great job on this one. I have already purchased the 443 and 444 books and am eager to read into those as well.

I had to use this book for a class. It has many mistakes and the quizzes at the end of the chapters ask questions that weren't even covered. Everyone in my class including the instructor agreed that this was not a good book. It either barely discusses or doesn't even cover things that the quizzes ask you about. I am going to find another book to study from before I even think about taking the test. The labs were terrible also, some of them couldn't even be completed as set up by the book. I wouldn't even waste my money on this.

Many examples in this book can not be compleated with the "Evaluation Software" the is included with the book. Chapters 14, and 15 both reference features not included in this version of the software.

The book has been reading very nicely and I believe that I have learned a lot from it but I have become very frustrated with the way the not all the examples/practice areas can be accessed with the limitations of the included software
