To everyone who is whining that this book is not geared for younger children: IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE FOR YOUNGER KIDS! Ms. Bauer clearly spells out her philosophy that history should be taught in the order that events occur. This book offers lots of literature suggestions for the slightly older student as well as the opportunity to begin practicing outlining as a study technique. As with all the previous activity guides this includes guided response questions for comprehension assessment. For those who want a "unit studies" approach that they can use for multiple grade levels at once, please look elswewhere. This subject matter does not work well with that approach.

Just what we were looking for!

This activity book looks to be exactly right for my son who will be in fourth grade and nine -years-old. He is excited about switching from summaries to the outlines and we all love the maps. You just can't have too many maps in a book, at least in this house you can't.

I can see that if you have not been following the Well Trained Mind suggestions in having your child write detailed 6-10 sentence summaries, then the writing might be overwhelming, but I think it is the perfect next step for those of us who have. Compared to the suggested summaries for the third volume of the series, I was pleased that the emphasis for Volume Four seems to be on organization of writing rather than volume.

I didn't think I'd be as happy with this book as I was with Vols. 2&3, but even though the reading lists aren't as extensive, I'm thrilled with the timeline cards & PRONUNCIATION GUIDE! If they were in the other volumes, I missed them. It's such a great idea to have the pronunciation guide when you read aloud! My DD9 will learn how to relate historical events so much better using the timeline cards as well. Can't WAIT to get going!

OK the students are older so they need a little more writing, but that is all this work book is! Boring. I can make outlines to be written from, which is what you get in this hefty book... and maps- lots of maps. The creative factor is what I want in the work book; it's what I pay for and it isn't there in this one.

It is the fourth in Bauer's history series and I think she ran out of steam. It's too bad; her earlier work books are creative. My kids with the previous work books said, "Yay! History!" Now they say, "Is it another outline?" You could save the money and just make your students outline the entire history book.

This book has been very helpful in planning a history curriculum. Other reviewers are correct the ditto portion you can copy is mainly maps. It is also a bit weaker than the other books in this group. However, despite those two complaints, this is a very useful book when planning curriculum for a homeschool student. There are discussion topics, craft ideas and more.

This is a wonderful book about homelessness from a child's point of view. The child likens himself to a bird trapped in the busy airport where he and his father live very carefully as to be undetected. A job for his father will free them to fly away from their temporary home like the bird that finally flies away when an automatic door opens one day.

Great, realistic story..

This book is more true to life then may people would like to a admit. As a school teacher, I have been using this book for years to share the plight of the working homeless. I have also worked in the homeless shelters of Boston and can't tell you how many people are struggling just to get on their feet. This book is sad, however you would been amazed how much empathy and new awareness an older child has after reading is wonderful piece of literature!

This story is quite bizarre and depressing. I'm keeping it for the collector's value. Thoughtful and synmpathetic. Problem: Sadly, there's no way a homeless father and son could live in an airport for more than a day or two in the post 9-11 era. Even the most ignorant security guard team would discover them and kick them out.

Sticks with you

I'm now 20, but I remembered reading this book when I was much younger. It's come into my mind more than once, and I'm glad to've finally found the title of the book again. You see, this is the kind of book that'll stick with you for a very long time. You've read the plot summary, so you know that this isn't exactly a regular children's book in its mood, but if it is possible at all for a children's book to truly change the way a child looks at the world in such a way that the impression remains, this is such a book. The illustrations are beautiful and hazy and dreamlike, though the story exists not in a fantasy world, but in a very mature reality. The story is pretty unique, but the feelings of comfort and love are threads that any child could stand to learn from. I highly recommend this as a much needed book for any child's collection.

This book is great and kind of sad. The way it's sad because it was about the kid and his father being poor and they got to live in an airport and they could be kicked out from there. Also, they are trying everything to get out of there and live a good life. Out of all the way the writing of the book is good.

As a new designer, I find this book very helpful and intriguing. It goes through the basic standards of human dimensions separating each chapter into antrhopometric dynamics and functions. Currently I'm in the Seating Measurement section and I had no idea about the amount of calculations involved in the act of sitting. Though this book was written in the 1970's, the information inside this book is still relevant for today. It's easy to grasp and it has many diagrams, tables, and figures to visually explain the content. Well organized book; very researched.

More useful than my required texts!

I'm currently in my second year (of three) studying interior design. This book was recommended by a teacher, and I must say...it is WAY better than any of the other textbooks we are forced to buy. If you're looking for a very pictorial book that is easy to read and understand, and that is comprehensive in the information it covers, this is for you! Great for students, I've recommended this to all my fellow classmates.

This book is one-of-a-kind. You can't find a better resource for human factors/ergonomic spacial measurements than this book right here. It was a required textbook for my college-level human factors class. I have used it as a reference *many times* outside of this class. Definitely buy it if this description meets your needs!

The book was copyrighted in 1979, and a lot of the data was fairly old even then. People are only a little taller (about 1" over the period when most of this data was taken, around 1960), but 25 or so pounds heavier. This is pretty significant when you're working with seating. It's great for its time, far better than nothing, but the body dimensions need revisiting. Also, bariatric furniture development, and I'm sure other areas for very large people, need body dimensions of people who are well above even the 99th percentile. There's no need to stop there just because you've covered nearly everyone. There's an increasing number of people in the country that really needs design data for people up to and even over 500 lbs.

This book provides a very detailed explanation of all the affects of Liver and Gallbladder congestion. Andreas comes across as very knowledgeable and experienced in this area. Even though you can find the recipe for a cleanse on sites like curezone, it is very helpful to become fully informed on the reasons for the cleanse. I had heard of this cleanse years ago, but didn't actually have the "guts" to do the cleanse until I read this book.

I bought the book in January'08. I read and re-read it several times, was
a little concerned: would I do it right, would it work? Finally on May 23rd I did the first one with good results. The second one was June 20th with excellent results. The epsom salts is nasty, the oil and juice isn't bad at all. I recommend it to anyone. I used to have a dull ache on my right side that is now gone. I'm on the fourth day of juice now with the cleanse to occur on the 11th, and have cleanses planned until June 2009. Read the book several times-I still read it over and over.

I received this book for Christmas and was so inspired by the recipes and lovely photos that I immediately started planning a trip to Paris. We got back a week ago and had a fabulous time! I mapped out all the recommended destinations at the back of her book. We were having such a good time we only made it to one (giving me an excuse to go back), E Dehillerin. It is the Mecca for anyone who loves to cook. Needless to say, I came back with a set of Mauviel copper pots and pans. We also had a Croque Monsieur during a picnic on the Champ de Mars (wonderful view of the Eiffel Tower) which I reproduced using the recipe from this book. It was like I was in the City of Lights all over again. Thank you Ina!

I bought this book for my daughter and she has taken to sewing extremely fast. She's so proud of what she makes. Her enthusiasm for sewing now is almost too much for me to keep up with. This book was was easy for her to understand and the illustrations were very clear. She's been playing around with reconstructing her clothes so I'm thinking of getting her the Rip It book as well. I'm happy to see her involved in a positive hobby that she truly enjoys and gets satisfaction from.

My best friend's wife is a third grade teacher, and she was given the book for use by a fellow teacher at her school. I picked up the book and read it while at their house to humor myself. Much to my suprise I ended up in a heated disucssion with my friend's wife. We life in a country with rights and freedoms not allowed throughout the world, and furthermore, we are a society that embraces capitalism and the right to property. The morals that this book teaches is an insult to American culture and values (not to mention capitalistic values). Reminds me of when one of my Aunt's children went to school on their first day (after my Aunt went out and spent way too much money buying expensive school supplies for my cousin) and came home crying saying that the teacher "stole all my school supplies." Turns out the teachers at that school CONFISCATE all children's school supplies and divide them evenly to be fair and make sure everyone has the same amount! Needless to say that after a phone call my cousin got all her belongings back.

Marcus Pfister, The Rainbow Fish (North-South, 1992)

It seems everyone in the world except me had heard of this book, which I have now been given to understand is a classic kids' picture book. So, not wanting to be left out (as usual), I grabbed a copy from the library and gave it a go. (How popular it is can be measured by how long I waited for this on hold-- close to six months.) And it's not bad, if a bit gimmicky (the little reflective bits on the pages, which seems a lot more like something someone in marketing came up with, rather than the author saying "hey, wouldn't this be cool?") and more than a bit heavy-handed (this is one case where my well-trod phrase "as subtle as a week-old dead haddock" is actually more apropos than usual). And, of course, the book's moral has been done eight hundred thousand times in kidlit, so if you prefer your kids getting the "sharing is caring" message in a more well-presented way, you've certainly no shortage of alternatives. But the shiny bits will probably hold your kids' attention, and it's an easy-to-follow story. Not bad. ***

Its for babies and toddlers.... duh!!!

Look people. We as adults would take offense to this book had it been written for US. But this book is for babies and toddlers. The sparkle fish scales are to get a babies attention and the whole moral to the story is for toddlers. See toddlers do not share, it is not that they are destined to be selfish or mean nor does it reflect any parenting skills. They are selfish and that is how they survive! This book it just a little story about sharing. I have a one, two, and three year old and that is one lesson we have to re-teach about every ten minutes. It is a cute book full of beautiful pictures and has a cute "KIDDIE MORAL".

We are a religious household and we are always learning the way of God and always doing our best to stay on the path to righteousness, but when it comes to kids we must remember their complete innocence and simple values. As they get older if the book still holds up with three boys (not likely unless it was made of steal) we will explain that it is is a simple book for babies and that it is not our job as kids, teens, and adults to blend in, or stand out... our job is to follow the path that God has laid for us.

So, please remember...... baby/toddler books are written for baby/toddlers! :)

ps. I think it is so funny that people come out of the woodwork screaming disdain for this book yet I never hear any bible remarks to Harry Potter books which involve witchcraft, not that I have a problem with those books either. They are books that spark imagination and they are not real or true which we will one day explain to our children if they ever read or watch the series.

People read way too much into children's books!!!

I have always loved this book and unlike most adults, I take it for what it is . . . a children's book! It's purpose is not to promote mediocrity but to show that happiness can come from treating others with kindness and not being prideful. This kind of story is no different than the fables and stories that our parents used to tell us. Apparently there are some parents these days who just don't want to teach their children any values.

I found this book a bore to read at best. It is full of omissions and confusing charts that don't explain what they are showing. I also found it constantly trying to convince you of this political dogma and to join the society that supports this. I am fairly new to vegetable gardening and had no clue how much to plant for my wife and I in a Fall/Winter Garden. The book contains many charts and diagrams, which show how many square feet of space to alot for each vegetable. I currently use a hybrid method with 4x4 square foot gardening instead of the large rectangles as suggested in the book since my garden is in my backyard and I do like to have some lawn. A square foot is a square foot, so it really doesn't matter shape/size. There is also some good general gardening advice in the first few chapters. It is a good reference book for the library.

while the idea of growing more vegetables is a noble (and highly marketable) title, the actual book didn't have much information that i didn't already read in 'square foot gardening' or 'four-season harvest'. a key difference is that an artificial soil mix isn't used, but rather using organic methods to improve existing soil - is that a new concept? while both books do a comparison of intensive methods, Jeavons recommends a hexagonal inter-planting pattern (similar to the spacing in chicken wire) to plant intensively, vs. the square foot method of rigidly planting only one kind of vegetable in each square. Jeavons also advocates the use companion plants whereever possible to increase yields and reduce pests. however, the sections devoted to double-digging and composting seem to make up a disproportionately large section of the book, and relatively little is said about what exactly increases yields except for treating the soil well (e.g., use good compost, raised beds, add organic matter, etc). for anyone interested in organic gardening, there isn't a lot of unique information in this book that couldn't be found on a good website.

Not a book for "casual backyard gardening"

The people who are disappointed with this book are the ones who bought it without understanding what it was. This book isn't a "gardening for the soul" book of fluff, nor is it a typical "how to get bigger tomatoes" text.

What this book is is a compendium of information on growing as much food as possible for real, live people to eat.
Yes, it delves into the science and discusses the big, scary numbers involved. For you 'visual types' who find yourselves having to use your fingers to complete a single digit multiplication problem, don't bother. If you want purpler plumbs or redder radishes, look elsewhere.

Assuming your IQ is above 100 and you're looking for a book to tech you some of the skills required to feed your family under all circumstances, I can hardly think of a better book than this one. It is exactly what it says.

If I had to put my family on a fertile island and give them one book on gardening, it would unquestionably be this one.

A book for the 21st century in the spirit of the Whole Earth Catalog. Big and thorough, it goes into detail upon detail of the stuff you aunt or uncle would have told you if they lived in the country.

While they don't tell you where to buy stuff (WEC did), it does tell you what to look for when you buy, so maybe a better deal?

My only complaint is that the type is so small I've had to order a magnifier to read it.

My daughter is really into reading about homesteading, and hopes to eventually find her own little slice of heaven. This is an excellent book, with lots of information. Although it's a very large book- which I wasn't expecting (approx. 11x17 soft cover), I do give it a good rating, because it's the information that counts.

2 other books we also purchased: Five Acres and Independence & The Modern Homestead Manual

If you want a great book to help you simplify your life and begin to wean you and your family off the rampant consumerism of today, THIS IS IT. I actually bought it a couple of years ago, but with today's oil crunch and people trying to save money and produce more, thought it would be a good time to recommend such a book to my friends.

"Country Wisdom And Know-How" from editor's publishing covers everything from caring for animals, to building suitable gates, to caning chairs, pest proofing your garden, growing food, canning food, and cooking food. It even teaches you how to make wine! This book covers EVERYTHING you need to know to start on the road to live more off the land and your own two hands than depending on others to do everything for you.

It is an oversized paperback book, the cover seems to be made out of old grocery sacks (it has that look and feel) and may even be made of recycled material. I have used this book a good bit over the past two years and found the advice is sound, practical and easy to understand. I recommend that EVERYONE interested in getting their lifestyle simplified buy this book.

You won't regret it.

Our copy of Country Wisdom & Know-How is very worn and tattered but still remains the focal point of our coffee table.
I discovered this book at a Barnes & Noble while living in the city. Was attracted to it because of it's paper-bag-like cover. Even though I lived in the middle of a city, in an apartment, I bought it anyway. My wife and I became hooked! Fell in love with the idea of having a hobby farm because of this book and packed up and moved to the country.
Everything you could think of is stuffed into this book, from Beekeeping to butchering chickens to building a compost bin. The book it's self is huge, but the print is very small. The "organic" looking cover doesn't last long. But the material inside is awesome.
Since this book, my wife and I have started a small side business keeping honeybees and selling our honey at farmers markets. We also enjoy making pickles, canning, raising chickens, and watching our daughter grow up in a world much richer than what we had in the city.
Highly recommend this book for any city dweller interested in starting a life in the country. It's a reference you'll never live without!

Great Info but Greatly Disappointing Book

A huge compendium of information from animal husbandry to construction and crafts to gardening...even how to recipes. That's the good news. I have great admiration for Storey Books and own many of their products. This book, however, is not up to par with their other products.

The publishing (not by Storey itself) leaves much to be desired. I'm surprised Storey put their name to it. I'd have gladly paid triple the price for a better quality soft-cover or hard-cover books with good quality pages and larger print...even if in several volumes. In fact, that's exactly what Storey should do with this and the similar "Survival Wisdom" book. They would be great hits and huge sellers. So what if it's a collection all in one book. The brown paper cover and lighter-than-newsprint pages require extremely delicate handling, and the tiny print is almost painful to read.

Much, if not all, of this book's contents are from the Storey "Country Wisdom Bulletin" series. It would ceratinly cost more, but a set of the bulletins may be the better option.

Overall, I'm disappointed. Regardless how potentially useful the information in its pages, this book is not a prudent buy.

I purchased this book for my mother who is taking care of someone with Alzheimber's Disease. She found it an excellent resource for accomplishing day to day activities such as eating, bathing, using the bathroom and keeping her occupied through the day.

This books was first published in 1981 and again in 1991 and 1999. When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 1995, I became aware of this book and purchased copies for my four siblings and my father. It was a God-send to us; as we learned quite a lot about the desease and the day to day caring for her. One thing I learned was no matter how many times she would repeat and repeat and repeat the same story, I would just say "oh, really" and just let her go on and on. Previously, I would say things like "mom, you already TOLD me this a million times." This would upset her and cause her much agitation. Mom has passed on (12/24/2000), but I like to think we helped her go without a lot of angst and agitation. Please read the book. It has many, many fine points. Thank you. m

If you have a family member with Alzheimers you must read this. It explains what and sometimes why Alzheimers patients act like they do, and how difficult it can be to care for them. Even if you are not a caregiver this will help understand the stresses caused by having a family member with Alzheimers. Also gives good advice on how to deal with difficult circumstances that will arise.

I am a caregiver, and this is very helpful.
It is a great reference book.

It helps to know I am not the only one dealing with these issues.
And that some of the things happening are a completely natural part of the aging process.

What a Blessing!

This book has been quite a blessing for those times when I need to look something up regarding this illness. I know that I'll find just the help I need and great ideas to make life easier when a family member is dealing with this. It's so great to have a reference book handy that seems to have all the answers I need. I am most grateful for this resource.
