This books was first published in 1981 and again in 1991 and 1999. When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 1995, I became aware of this book and purchased copies for my four siblings and my father. It was a God-send to us; as we learned quite a lot about the desease and the day to day caring for her. One thing I learned was no matter how many times she would repeat and repeat and repeat the same story, I would just say "oh, really" and just let her go on and on. Previously, I would say things like "mom, you already TOLD me this a million times." This would upset her and cause her much agitation. Mom has passed on (12/24/2000), but I like to think we helped her go without a lot of angst and agitation. Please read the book. It has many, many fine points. Thank you. m

If you have a family member with Alzheimers you must read this. It explains what and sometimes why Alzheimers patients act like they do, and how difficult it can be to care for them. Even if you are not a caregiver this will help understand the stresses caused by having a family member with Alzheimers. Also gives good advice on how to deal with difficult circumstances that will arise.

I am a caregiver, and this is very helpful.
It is a great reference book.
It helps to know I am not the only one dealing with these issues.
And that some of the things happening are a completely natural part of the aging process.

This book has been quite a blessing for those times when I need to look something up regarding this illness. I know that I'll find just the help I need and great ideas to make life easier when a family member is dealing with this. It's so great to have a reference book handy that seems to have all the answers I need. I am most grateful for this resource.

I have read many books and other media about audio mixing, this book is the best so far. The author explains the topics in great detail and in three ways: with text, with figures and with audio examples. The chapter on compressors alone is good reason to buy this book.
Just what I was looking for.

I was looking for a book about mixing covering all aspects from the very basics to sophisticated tricks. This book has it all.
I'm currently studying songwriting in college, and I have to write, record and mix a lot of songs. I needed some type of guide and I've found it on this book.
I have no noticed too much of the weird grammar some of the other reviewers said, though I have not finished reading the whole book and I'm not a native english speaker.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about music producing in general, and to mix better songs.

This is by far the best book that I have EVER read.
I have a dream of being a composer/producer and have dedicated 3 years learning by experimentation. Without reading this book last month, I would have spent another 30 years learning just the basics of what this book covers through experimentation.
I was particularly excited by the EXTENSIVE chapter on compression. I have read many websites, tutorials and manuals on compressors, but this is the first book that I've read that explains it from a truly musical perspective - and well it's just correct!
The book covers more territory in audio production and mixing (and mastering) than any book I've ever seen - and I even got a few chuckles out of it.
Add this book to your brain and you will be a contender in the audio mixing/production industry!
For you DnB wannabe's out there, there's even a MASTERCLASS CHAPTER on how to put together a killer DnB Track - and it's based on a track by someone you'll have heard of if you know anything at all about DnB. (The reason I write this is because SO MANY people are trying to write DnB, and producing it so poorly that it'll end up making the genre obsolete! Do yourself a favour, study hard with this book and you'll enjoy the fruits of your labour much more - and so will others.)

This big, thick, heavy tome is, without a doubt, one of the best books ever published on audio mixing and production. You will find it ALL in here - mixing tips and tricks, in-depth discussion of how compression, EQ, and all the other processors and effects work, good coverage of popular plug-ins and tools, in fact ... everything. It is an ambitious, thorough book, written by someone with an obvious love of the craft. It is aimed mostly at the recording musician, versus the hard-core sound engineer - meaning it is pretty easy to read and digest, with formulas and math kept thankfully to a minimum and relatively simple where they appear.
This book is THE resource for audio engineers, both professional and amateur/hobbyist. It is not a little paperback with a few cool "tricks" for hip hop producers. This is a book for serious people who want to learn, or reinforce their knowledge of, the whole field of audio mixing.
A major plus of this book is that it is very current. For example, the plug-in examples are things like Altiverb, McDSP, and Vintage Warmer. The song and artist examples are equally current. This is a 2008 book in every way. It is the first book in its field that was really written from the ground-up for the digital, DAW age, as opposed to many other books which are pre-DAW and obsessed with old (and expensive) pro studio gear that few people use anymore. Today's musician-producer does not care why an $80,000 mixing board from 1973 is better than some other board; he/she wants to know how to use compressor plugins to get a better sound. This book is truly ideal for people mixing in-the-box, because it is so DAW / plugin /software centric. Since I mix in-the-box I really loved this aspect of the book.
I am giving the book 5 stars for the content, though it does deserve to be dinged a star for some awkward writing. The grammar is weird, and occasionally interrupts or slows down the reading flow. However, the very notion that one would read an audio engineering book like a novel, so as to get pissed off at a writing style that throws off the "flow," is a testament to how good the content is. An editor should take another pass at this book and tighten it up a little.
There is no reason or excuse not to have this book, if you are into making music and mixing audio.

I have used this book every year for the past 5 years to design our homeschooling curriculum. It is fantastic!
It lets you know what your child should be learning every year from pre school through 12th grade; giving many ideas for books, games, magazines, and web sites that you can use to teach every subject.
Oh, how I wish Rebecca Rupp would do an updated version of the book with newer web sites and newly published book suggestions!

As a homeschooler, I felt I need a book to help guide me to make sure I wasn't leaving anything out of my kids education. This book covers a lot for each grade level. It's a great source of guidance and referrences. But, just because the book SAYS your child should know a certain thing by a certain grade, doesn't mean you HAVE to teach that. Overall, I like the book and continue to use it for reference but I don't live by it.

I am new to homeschooling and this seemed to be a good starting point for establishing what I need my child to cover in the school year. It does not tell you exactly what curriculum to choose for your child's learning style but it does guide you over all the areas children should be knowledgeable in. There are several out of print books that are recommended as well as websites that are not available. It also has some very good information in the appendixes. Overall, I would recommend this book as a great tool.

The main reason that I bought this book was that I am moving more and more toward the mindset of frugal homeschooling. However, using a library can be daunting, when one is not sure which skills and content areas need to be taught. However, with this book and a library card, you can pretty much teach your child for free. She does recommend math programs, but the ones she recommends range from 10.00 per year to expensive 110.00 programs. I believe she has made an excellent balance of skills that need to be covered, and general content areas, as well as a few curriculum tips. She is also open to the needs of different people. While she never taught her children spelling, she also recommends 3 or 4 different spelling programs. She also includes literature and fun books to teach content and skill areas, and in the end, how to prepare for college. This book is better than the Core Knowledge series for me because it's less expensive, goes all the way to 12th grade, and is written specifically for homeschoolers. However I still hope to purchase the What your __Needs to Know Series to use alongside this book.
Homeschooling is much more affordable, efficient and fun when one avoids curriculum, and this book is an excellent tool to make sure you are prepared, organized, and not missing anything important.

Do you want a parent-friendly guide to realistic educational goals for your child at each grade level? This is it. This is another must-have book for me in my venture through homeschooling. How do I know if what my child is learning is typical for their grade? Look it up in here. I did many searches online and kept coming up with grand pages written in dense "teacher-ese" about abstract geometry and linguistic comprehension... for kindergarteners. I need the easy to understand, quick version and this is presicely what I was looking for. There are also excellent resource suggestions listed in here.

This is an essential reference book if your child is a sixth grader in a school using Hirsch's "Core Knowledge" curriculum. An amazing amount of information is packed in to this book and is presented in an understandable and interesting way with helpful pictures (mostly in color in the visual art section) and maps and graphs as needed. All major sixth grade subjects are covered (with the exception of PE and foreign language). If your child's school doesn't follow core knowledge don't expect this to be a guide to what he is learning in sixth grade as it may be quite different. However it could still be an interesting supplemental book for your child since it is filled with information a well educated adult should know.

I bought this book to prepare my child for Beestar online tests for sixth graders. Due to the vast differences among schools and teachers in teaching science and social studies, students often receive a rather unbalanced treatment of the subjects in their classroom. This book comes as a rescue of the situation. It tells you clearly what your child needs to know as a sixth grader. My child studied several important chapters from this book that somehow were never taught by his teachers. And yes the knowledge is essential and is needed in state standardized tests.
I highly recommend this book for aiding in the preparation for any general knowledge test. It takes you all the way through iambic pentameter to Benito Juarez. The math and science sections are wonderful as well. It provides very complex information in a very user-friendly manner. I'm very glad that we had this book.

I've been a packrat hoarding things all my life. After reading this book, I got rid of all this stuff that I probably shouldn't have bought in the first place. I look at my car, my office, my bookshelves, my clothes and shoe closets, and my kitchen, and I'm amazed by how neat, clutter-free, and ORGANIZED everything is.
If you want to get your tax, banking, investment, and financial records organized, I recommend reading "File Don't Pile" by Pat Dorff. Her filing system is a lot simpler. Personally, I don't think Quicken has made a huge difference. I tried it and thought it was OK. I use an old-fashioned paper day planner to keep track of where I spend my money everyday. I plan on signing up for a Franklin Covey seminar this year.

This book addressed issues that I have alway had with organizing. I thought organized meant neat clean and out of sight and putting things in a "logical" spot according to world standards. I was pleased to find that organized is being able to find what you want or need when you want or need it. And that it's not done in a day.
Geared more toward beginning organizers.

I personally didn't get as much information out of this book as I would have preferred, although I did like the set up of her book. She takes the first section of the book to set up her basic organizing philosophy, and then repeats that philosophy in each different area of the house (kitchen, living room, bedroom, office, etc). She has several great ideas and practices that originate with each person's personal preferences in mind. She advocates a lot of common sense ideas like containerizing, labeling and filing as well as other unconventional and creative means of organization and storage (like setting up your home office where you will actually enjoy working).
The problem I ran into is that I would go to a certain section looking for a way to improve and find that I was already utilizing most of her suggestions, and really didn't have much left to organize.
I would recommend this book for anyone who honestly believe that they REALLY need help organizing, and are ready to start the process. If you're already pretty well organized for the most part it still might be a worthwhile read, but I would suggest looking for a more advanced book on organizing (and let me know if you find one).

Her approach to organizing, as the title suggests, is whatever you are organizing -- your work/family schedule, your office, your kitchen, or your basement -- needs to reflect you: what's important to you, who you are and your value and logic system. I found it so refreshing and exciting how the focus in the book is about getting interested in who you are and how you operate and then creating a system of organization based on that. This is a more organic, natural, effective and lasting approach than the one most of us have where we impose an outside system that will "fix" our disorder. Often, those outside systems do the opposite. Reading this book demystified and made accessible the topic of organizing, one that I often found daunting and overwhelming. Julie applies conventional wisdom to organizing in a way that makes it easy, logical and even fun. Her mottos are: "If it ain't broken, don't fix it"....and "You can't fix it till you know what's broken". Applying these ideas and without even thinking, I organized in 10 minutes, a whole section of my closet that had bothered me for about 10 months!
This approach of investigating and discovering who you are and how you operate is in line with two other authors who have made a huge impact in my life: Ariel and Shya Kane. Their books, Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation, How to Create a Magical Relationship and Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment, are all based on a similar idea that you don't need to do anything to change or fix yourself in order for your life to be satisfying, less stressful, fun and enjoyable. If you are interested in getting the most out of all aspects of your life, I highly recommend all of these books!

This book provides a very detailed explanation of all the affects of Liver and Gallbladder congestion. Andreas comes across as very knowledgeable and experienced in this area. Even though you can find the recipe for a cleanse on sites like curezone, it is very helpful to become fully informed on the reasons for the cleanse. I had heard of this cleanse years ago, but didn't actually have the "guts" to do the cleanse until I read this book.

All I can say is that this really works! I actually am looking forward to my second cleanse. I feel great and have more energy. My Gallbladder pain has dissappeared. You owe this to yourself to try, you won't be dissappointed! Everything he said would happen did, and I was dubious at first.
Best thing to ever happen!!!!!!

I bought the book in January'08. I read and re-read it several times, was
a little concerned: would I do it right, would it work? Finally on May 23rd I did the first one with good results. The second one was June 20th with excellent results. The epsom salts is nasty, the oil and juice isn't bad at all. I recommend it to anyone. I used to have a dull ache on my right side that is now gone. I'm on the fourth day of juice now with the cleanse to occur on the 11th, and have cleanses planned until June 2009. Read the book several times-I still read it over and over.

I used this for our daily read aloud. When it was time to stop for the day, but I kept reading, no one minded or asked me to stop. Hmmm, now that I think about it, even the neighbor girl kept mysteriously appearing about the time I read every day! The writer hooks you from the very start. He uses detail, but not so much it bogs down the story. A very enjoyable read!

I would highly recommend this book for many reasons. It makes a great summer read for students going into 7th grade. It combines historical violence, emotion, affection, and life and death decisions. This book is full of in-depth descriptions; you can always "see" the picture running through your head. In the beginning, Crispin is a peasant who is considered a nobody; but, by the end of the story he finds himself face-to-face with one of the strongest men and he becomes a hero. All in all, I would highly recommended this book for middle school students.

I like the book Crispin. The reason why I like it is because its visible, and what I mean by that is you can see it going on in your mind as it's being read. Crispin was accused of stealing and murder. So now he in known as a wolf's head meaning anyone can kill him. He met a guy named Bear, when he ran away from Stromford. When he met Bear they traveled from city to city together. The story is about them trying to gain their freedom.
If I was to recommend this book to any one I'd recommend it to all the kids in different schools. I think that they might enjoy it if they're into adventurous stories.

The title of this book is Crispin The Cross of Lead, by Avi. I think this book is pretty good because its about a 13 year old boy name Crispin whose mother died and a guy named John Aycliffe who claims him a wolf head. So Crispin Asta's son decides to run away and then he meets a man name Bear. What do you think will happen? Would he get killed?

I'm not sure which grades the book is supposed to be geared toward but given the number of college students I've taught who have difficulty reading, I think this book would work from junior high to college level. Obviously in junior or senior high school classes we are probably talking about English classes or a unit on the Medieval world, perhaps in a world history course or western civ course. For college I think this could be a good break of the primary sources and scholarly articles. It would be a fun way to get students to think about changes from the beginning of the middle ages through the 14th century. It's a good book for students for a few reasons. First, Avi's portrayal of the late 14th century, with a focus on the various social, political and economic anxieties that abounded. Second, the level of reading comprehension is just high enough to make it both challenging to younger or less skilled students but not seem too shallow for other students. Third, the characters and events are interesting, I read it in a few hours. Finally, the book offers many opportunities to discuss how society worked without preaching any single correct interpretation thus allowing a teacher to use it in a variety of ways. I might keep it in my for a future survey of medieval history as alternative to some traditional means of assessment and assignment.

The book is a great addition to your library of David Bach books or as a stand alone book for anyone that is unfamiliar with David Bach's advice. I do not know of any other book on the market that combines environmentalism with creating personal wealth. Mr. Bach pulls it off nicely showing how living "green" causes one to quit over consuming and save money that can be invested for growth over the years. The book shows fifty quick and easy ways that living more simply will save you money while saving the earth. Whether it is saving $884 a year by getting a car with better gas mileage or $2,250 a year by bringing your lunch to work, you will be reducing Co2 emissions and trash into landfills. He also believes that green companies will be great investments in 21st century the way tech stocks were for the late 80's and 90's. I am an avid investor and stock trader but he introduced me to green mutual funds and ETFs that I had never heard of. His final piece of advice is to start your green business if you have a million dollar idea of how to do something better to save the earth. I am by no means an environmentalist or "Green", but I love to live frugally and simply, this book really made me think in ways that I have not in the past. I highly recommend reading this book to people interested in wealth building and to environmentalists (this is a new spin, a convenient truth:going green saves money). I am looking forward to David Bach's next book.

This book lists 50 ways you can make your life greener. Readers who are already convinced of the need to act ecologically will be its best audience. The ideas are useful, if not deeply innovative. Most of them will indeed help the environment and save you money. And that's a good thing. However, author David Bach (writing with Hillary Rosner) uses many semi-statistical claims without giving enough data or context to lend meaning to his numbers, though they may still encourage true environmental action believers. Some of the book's statistical conclusions are based on fairly unrealistic extrapolations of averages. For example, saying that the average family works two to four months out of the year to drive, insure, fuel and maintain its cars does not seem to capture the fiscal realities and practical options truly available to such families. Bach's real message, of course, is to drive thoughtfully, save money and go easy on the planet, so getAbstract suggests focusing on the good to be done, and being a little forgiving about the math.

Many tips fall under the category of obvious, such as maintaining your home and automobile to save money and resources. This wouldn't be too bad on its own, but many of the extreme green tips are questionable in practicality or point. For example, Bach suggests taking your home off the grid by going completely solar without any mention of what to do at night when the sun doesn't shine. The silliest suggestion is using recycled toilet paper instead of the soft stuff made from "virgin fiber" that comes from "old growth trees, and entire forests of them are clear-cut in order to produce it". This forty year old argument is just plain wrong considering that the forest community plants over 1.5 billion trees a year in the US and forests are growing at rate faster than they are harvested according to [...]. Overall the book is disappointing compared to Bach's previous works. I was really hoping for some innovative, practical, and well researched ideas. It seemed like if an organization said something was green then it made it in the book regardless of what more thorough research might have said.

After reading the numerous reviews on this site prior to purchasing this book, I thought I was getting a very thorough book that would assist with "legal" system design and reclaimation strategies. While this book does gloss over them, it refers you to a sister publication for all "legal" builing issues and concentrates on illegal or 'radical' methods as they call it. Take this in mind of you are looking to design a 'legal' system for your home.

I liked this book. It is short, fast reading and worth the time. I want to start my own catchment system because of this book. I have a need for understanding with some other environmental issues that were not addressed in the book, but overall, I am excited about the possible options for recycling water regardless of it's state (rain, grey, black) on my homesite. This book addresses my needs.

I found this book more for someone looking to convert their existing house and plumbing to run on a grewater system, as opposed to for someone looking to build a house around/incorporating a greywater system (which is my situation).
Still, an extremely specific and informative book for those who are interested in knowing every nuance of making a greywater system out of any situation.
