There's great variety among the 15 skinny quilts in the book which is beautifully photographed. Unfortunately, there were only a couple that appealled to me. The stunning quilt on the cover (which is why I bought the book) turned out to be too complicated for me to consider putting that much time into a table runner. I won't be uising this book as much as I thought I would.

How many times have you wanted to give a quilted gift but only thought in terms of a bed-sized version? I know when I say quilt, I think of something that will take a minimum of a month to make. With SKINNY QUILTS AND TABLE RUNNERS, you can move your quilted gift thinking from LARGE to something smaller but is still a quilted gift.

There are 15 different projects to make. Each is as colorful and unique as the next so everyone should find something that fits the needs of the "gift of the moment". They are as simple as a strip block with a couple of borders to one with lots of appliqué to a cutwork runner.

Each project is shown with a colorful photo of the finished project. A materials list that covers fabric as well as any other tool/supply needed is given. Cutting details as listed and assembling instructions are clear and easy to follow. There are graphics to help explain the instructions too. Templates are provided and finishing how-to's make up the final parts of the directions for the project.

There is a section on quilting basics for those moments when you say "How do I do that?" Don't forget to read about each designer and the editor in the "About the Designers" section. And if you need to locate any of the supplies, there is a resource page. And just so you don't think this book is only for small projects, remember to think "BIG". Each small project can be made into a bed-sized quilt by simply making more squares!

Haven't had time to begin "playing" with the ideas yet but I can hardly wait! In addition, my taste is traditional or transitional but my daughter's taste is very contemporary and rich so I've not been able to create useful items she would actually use in her home. This book has several and I'm sure she'll be delighted!

It is filled with beautiful photographs of Mexican outdoor living and the commentary is concise but clear, enabling the reader to copy the ideas found in the book. I intend to use the book to create my own Mexican/Spanish style courtyard.

This is a most amazing book on many levels. It is a reference book, a book of interviews with the great names in the bicycling world, a book packed with fitness tips for all ages, interviews with people who have biked for years and years and still bike. Here's just on piece of advice I got from an interview: "Don't sit down for an hour after dinner" and "find a gear you like to ride in and just stay in it" and so much more. You really don't even have to be a bike rider to get alot out of this book.

Really great, thoughtful book

Alternates between being inspirational and educational. Plan to get it for my biking friends when they hit 40 or 50. Lots of useful information and a good read.

This book got me fired up about cycling. Having fought a lifetime battle with weight and health demons, I have recently lost 80 lbs by swimming, cycling and running. However, I need constant inspiration to maintain my current level of fitness.

Through their own awe-inspiring cycling achievements, along with other amazing cycling personalities, the authors have written a book that entertains, educates and inspires. I have placed it on my "top shelf" where it is accessible for future reference along with all of my favorite books.

A lot of good information

Review Date: 2008-04-30
This book explains why it is necessary for older riders to stretch before riding and to avoid simple sugars. I am not sure knowing those things will make me do them, but reading the book does move me in the direction of better habits.

I really liked the interviews. I learned something useful in each one of them. They are also the sort of thing that inspires you to ride. Reading descriptions of how to do various exercises was not easy. Perhaps drawings or photos would have helped. Still, I would rather be riding than doing exercises, no matter how advisable it is to do the exercises.

This book will have an effect on my training and riding style. One of the most helpful sections was about using one's glutes more for added power in pedaling. I may not revise everything I do immediately, but I will read my underlinings again and again. In time I will be doing more of what this book suggests.

Several times I thought I would not be at all interested in a new chapter's topic. But, when I got into the chapter it was even more interesting than the previous chapter. Some of the topics were also vital, like watching out for osteoporosis.

The immediately most helpful thing I learned by reading this book was how to utilize and strengthen my 'glutes' for more power and more endurance. I can ride longer and faster with less soreness afterward now. That information alone was worth the cost of the book.

There is some good information on preserving and building relationships, but most of the people cited for their life stories were better examples of broken relationships. Cycling can be addictive and a non-cycling spounse is not always content to sit at home and wait for the cyclist to return home.

It is generally very enjoyable to read.

Not a step-by-step guide

Review Date: 2007-12-04
The description of this book is misleading. This is not a step-by-step guide to constructing built-ins, it's just a show-case of things built by master craftsmen. The so-called step-by-step part consists of the super-obvious, such as: 1st choose your design, 2nd choose your materials, 3rd choose your hardware. There is no how-to. Don't buy this book unless you already know wood-working or you'll just end up with glossy photos of spectacular built-ins you can't build yourself.

Fell short

I felt the sample of this book was not a good indication of it's contents. Most of the built-ins shown in the book are from a Room-View with the built in partially obstructed and with little detail shown. I wasn't looking for plans to build, but I would have expected more. If you like the details level shown on the cover of the book, then this will be right up your alley, other wise, the book will probably fall short of your expectations.

Taunton has a very good reputation for their publications so I thought this would be a great book to help me with several projects I will be undertaking. It was a disappointment. There was nothing innovative or unique about the ideas presented. The cabinet styles were either very basic or so custom they did not provide realistic options. If you are looking for innovative or creative ideas for a realistic cabinet project ... look elsewhere.

Great ideas!

To make the most of our new home, I was looking for ideas for custom made cabinetry and other storage options.
Although the style of quite a few examples are not to my taste, I still got enough ideas and inspiration. Also a plus; the book gives you tips for matching built-ins to the rest of the room, to get a coordinated look.
My favourite chapters: Passages (great storage options to be found there!!) Window seats (you will see small window seats as well as really large ones) Workspaces (they show you practical workspaces even in tiny closets) and Utility Areas. In the kitchen chapter I liked the small details, like the pantry and appliance garage.

Wonderful Devotional for all Elementary age kids

Wow, when I picked this book up in the Christian Book Store I was immediately taken by it. I've always looked for devotionals that would really hold my childrens' interests and this is it! Each day there is a new "sticky situation" that a child is in, and it gives multiple choice answers to figure out. Then it tells you where you can find help in the Bible (give a verse) and how to discuss this. I have a 7yr old girl and 10.5 yr old boy and this book is great for both. It will be good for my son until he's at least 12. I also got the second version of this book which is just as good :) These are perfect to do either during breakfast in the morning or during dinner in the evening as a family. We keep them on our kitchen counter along with a Bible. You'll love it :)

These short narratives of "What would you do?" really appeal to our grandsons, 7 and 9. They enjoy reading one after dinner each night. We haven't found one yet that they didn't give the right answer to, although my husband had challenges to one. I was concerned that the situations would be too mature for them, but they are handling them well. Some of the situations involve teens. I am trying another couple of books to see the differences, so will review them also. Overall, a great approach to discussing the right thing to do and the related Bible verses.

Good devotional for many ages!

Each page plunges the reader into a particular situation which kids can definitely relate to. The situation is presented then the reader is asked what she he/she would/should do. Lastly, a scripture is given to look up to show a proper Biblical response. Helps kids to think about making good decisions based on scriptural truths.

I purchased Sticky Situations as part of the expectations for a kids small group. I am wanting to teach them the importance of daily devotions and also help them to think on their own when they need to make decisions. This devotional provides a situational story and then gives the reader several options of ways to respond. After they make their choice the reader can then confirm their answer through the scripture reference. Kids are faced with many choices aside from the one made at home and this book should help them make right choices.

Apply Biblical Truth to Every Day Life

Is the Bible an out-of-date, dusty old book or is it relevant to daily life? This book takes current situations that kids are facing and provides five choices for action. The choices are a springboard for discussion between parents and their kids.

After reading the story and talking about the choices, you turn to the back and find some additional points for discussion.

This book is an ideal product for families with school-age children. It gives you a consistent well-crafted tool to talk about Biblical truth then your children can easily apply the lessons into their current situation.

Generally, too general
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-20
This book tries to cover everything on home maintenance and ultimately fails to adequately explain in detail the things you might really use.

Take, for example, insulating an attic space. It's covered, but only very briefly. I ended up using various websites that had more detail and were more helpful when I took up that project.

There's an entire chapter on pools and spas, an entire chapter on decks, and several others that seem to be a bit more specialized. That's not a problem; the problem is that the general home stuff that almost any homeowner would need (e.g. plumming or HVAC or normal repairs) get less treatment.

I have no doubt the authors would be able to repair just about anything in most houses. But their book, supposedly for idiots, glazes over far too many normal repairs without enough detail for us idiots to actually be able to use this book.

There are some helpful tidbits in here, and if you already have a collection of DIY type home repair books, this might make a good addition. But if you're looking for a good general home repair book to help you with most normal home repair projects - this isn't it.

This is a good overview of a home and it's systems

I purchased this book along with two other home maintenance and repair books because I am a new homeowner and would like to be on top of my game. I also bought it because I was really concerned about how deeply technical the other two books would get and I knew this would give me a good foundation. This book is good because it breaks down a home into it's various systems and gives you a good general overview of how each of them work and what they're comprised of. The best part about this book, in my opinion, is the Home Maintenance Schedule and Checklist. It gives you a good description of what needs to be done when and you can refer to the book for instruction if necessary. I imagine this book will be instrumental in keeping my home in great condition through the years.

Between this and the B&D Home Repair book, pretty much everything you need to know for basic homeowner do-it-yourself projects and repairs is covered. I've used it several times in a few months, and it is wonderful to have on hand as a reference. The book is sturdy and easy to understand too. It would get 5 stars if there weren't so much overlap with the Home Repair guide--the two should be better coordinated to avoid redundancies.

I knew I wanted to buy a 14" bandsaw, but knew nothing about bandsaws and wanted a good overview. It accomplished that.

I get the impression that the author expected the reader to select the topics of interest and just read those. As a novice, I read the entire book straight through and as a result, got a bit tired of the repetition I went through.

It is an easy read and I learned effectively. I still have a couple questions, but was able to narrow my saw selection to two.

I bought this book because I've been in the market for my first bandsaw for a few months. I've been researching the topic a lot and came across a recommendation for this book in a forum somewhere. Given Amazon's great price I thought what they heck. I found this book to be very informative and pointed out a lot of things I should be looking at when determining which saw to buy that I had not though of. It did this without knocking any brands or given slanted praise to any brand either which I really liked. I don't really like taking a recommendation from an author who recommends a brands that sponsors him. Definitely worth the money and the time.

I did find some of the information redundant as to what was written in the owners manual. But, there are great sections on how to tune up your saw, jigs, projects and a whole lot more. This book is in my shop with me and I find myself referring to it.

I would recommend for both novice and seasoned woodworkers. There is just a lot of good useful information.

Every chapter is filled with knowledgeable experience gained from using many different types of bandsaws. Lonnie Bird has taught woodworking and the use of power tools such as the band saw for many years. Having used a bandsaw in the past and getting ready to do so again after a 15 year hiatus, I thought I should bone up on the facts. Lonnie had information I never even considered before. His treatment of bandsaw blades and their use is invaluable and complete. This book will be readily available in my shop for quick reference whenever I need it on bandsaw tuning or blade selection.

I was issued this book as one of many during my paramedic program. It was intended for the anatomy and physiology module of the course, and I could not see a better way to get a quicker grasp and overview of the human body and its systems. This book does a great job of putting every simple and to the point. I have used other books for A&P courses that I've taken in college, which were much thicker and contained more information, but they were much more expensive and more in depth. I enthusiastically recommend this book for anyone needing a fast thorough introduction to the human body. Great Book!
