This is a well-written and easily understood intro to Visio, which does a good job of covering diagrams, flowcharts, Gantt charts, floorplans, and the like. But, it has absolutely no information on building database diagrams with Visio, for which I deducted a star.

Despite being an economics/finance geek, who is a fan of Michael Lewis' previous work, especially Moneyball, I was debating whether to buy this. I have already read The Wealth of Nations, which makes up half of this huge book. It is nice to have such a collection of great works together though, and although the vast majority of the writing is just old copyright expired material you can get on the Internet for free, Lewis' commentary does add to it. In addition to being an accomplished writer, the author does have a masters in economics from the London School of Economics, and does have a knowledge of and a passion for the subject. So on the whole this is really intended for people who have an academic interest in the subject, but at the very least you will have a really big book on your shelf to impress your friends.

This is a complicated book because of its length and
technical verbiage in economics. The outline includes
lengthy dissertations by 5 or more writers in foundational
economic literature and reporting. These are:
1776: The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
1798: An Essay on the Principle of Population
by Thomas Malthus
1817: Principles of Political Economy and Taxation
by David Ricardo
1899: The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study of Institutions by Thorstein Veblen
1936: The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money
by John Maynard Keynes
There is an extensive development of macroeconomic theory
dealing with the GNP, as well as the microeconomics pertinent
to everything human beings do. The Wealth of Nations is the
classic by Adam Smith. It espouses the theory that human
beings are driven by self-interest & that they play a role
in improving the market. The Mercantilists of the
time believed that the wealth of a nation began with trade
surpluses. The division of labor leads to greater improvement, dexterity, time saving and mechanization. These concepts
permeate the modern patent laws around the world. The inherent
difficulty in weighing metals leads to the utilization of coins
and other money in the form of paper, bonds etc. Value is
defined in terms of its use in exchange. The real price is
a function of the toil involved in the manufacture or assembly
of a product.
Malthus believed that increasing the price of a stock
necessarily increased the price of provisions.
David Ricardo believed that population doubled every 25 years
and that capital doubled in less than 25 years or it lagged behind. Therefore, wages increased because the demand for labor
was greater than its supply. The value of a
commodity was a function of the amount of labor expended in
producing it. The quantity of labor with respect to commodity
production is modified by the employment of machinery, fixed
and durable capital.
Thorstein Vebleu believed that wealth increments lead to a
leisure class developing in structure and function.
At some point, the leisure class matures and it becomes exempt
from the idea of thrift and savings.
Overall, the book explains many of the concepts behind money and
wealth. The downside is the 1400 pages or so to accomplish this
monumental task. This would be an excellent purchase for students
of the economic sciences, government, politics, world history and
news reporting. The $30 price tag is a solid value for the content contained within this massive text.

This book sits in the Family Room - the heart of the home. It is so simple to grab and find whatever fits the moment. It could be a simple teaching moment (child not sharing, angry words, etc.) or it could be a family study time with discussion & prayer. SO awesome. I love this book - and now that I'm in the habit of grabbing it in moments of need, it gives ME time to cool down if necessary. ALSO great for encouragement when a child does well in something, not just to correct them.
Great reference for Christian parents!

I have been using this book for almost 10 years now to refer to biblical scripture. I have found it to be an excellent resource for teachable moments when it helps to have a scripture back-up to explain what God says about a topic. We all have to pick our battles, especially as our kids get older. This has eliminated many battles because my kids understand the power in hearing it from God's word. I also like the activities that are included with many of the topics. Having a tangible way for my kids to learn about a topic helps reinforce the real meaning of the scripture for them. EVERY parent should own a copy.

Fantastic! This has been so helpful in the life of my family. We use it very often. It is so easy to look things up and use the icons from the key to instruct you how to put these thoughts into actions. Great Bible refrences! There is a Bible verse for every topic! It's just a great reference to have. It keeps you out of sticky situations when you do not know how to explain things to your children, and even yourself! I often give this to my girl friends at baby showers. So great!

This is an excellent resource, full of practical tips for dealing with a large variety of health issues. I have at least 2 shelves full of health & medical advice books, some quite gigantic. But THIS is the book I always reach for when dealing with health problems. It gets right to the point & offers a list of things you can do to deal with each problem. (I just bought an updated one for me & another copy for a friend so that I don't have to keep reading her mine over the phone while she takes notes.)

Although this cost a bit more than I initially wanted to spend, I'm very happy with it. It has nice pen-friendly stiff pages, cute graphics, and a sturdy hook to hang it with. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I would have liked the spaces for each day to be just a tiny bit bigger. Oh well, when I fill up the available space in this one, I'll just buy another!

This book contains tons of high quality, color photos. The photos take up about half the book. Although the photos are nice and give me a good idea of what I need to do, I still found myself wanting a more detailed explanation on many of the topics. I am fairly handy around the house. Yet, I found myself needing and wanting information that this book did not mention.
In all fairness, if the book went into details on all of the topics, it would be a foot thick and cost a lot more.

What you do with conflict can change your life!

Review Date: 2004-05-19
Review Date: 2004-05-19
The goal of this book is to awaken the reader's perspective of conflict as an opportunity to glorify God by seeking understanding and forgiveness. Ken Sande provides excellent life stories to illustrate the real struggles we face in relationships. He then seeks the Biblical answer to resolving the breakdown in those relationships. Each part ends with an "As You Grow" section that helps to bring the study into your own life.
Part 1 reviews the common responses to conflict using the slippery slope of Peacmakers. He then shows that conflict can arise out of idols that we have established in our lives including an excellent examen of conscience that reveals that sin of idolatry. He then reviews the basic goals and pattern for resolving conflict.
Part 2 explores the four vital aspects of a peacemaking marriage. Confession removes our old hackneyed and easy ways we confess "I'm sorry" and replaces it with a thorough and God pleasing confession. Confrontation walks through the most avoided but needed part of relationships. The section on listening is excellent. Wise words shows how cautious we need to be as healers. Forgiveness is the heart of this book for me. It points out that forgiving is not a feeling it is a choice and requires us to make for promises - not to dwell on it, not to use it against them, not to talk with others, not to allow it to be a barrier. The Young Peacemakers says it - Good thought, hurt you not, gossip never, friends forever. In fact in forgiveness we replace those negative and forgiven hurts with positive ones. Negotiation occurs when substantive issues needs to be worked out in a setting that is safe and seeks compromise and satisfaction between spouses.
Part 3 begins to apply the principles laid out in the book. The first sections focuses on how to teach the principles to your children seeking teachable moments and leading by example. Chapter 9 and 10 gives life story examples of how conflict can be resolves with a child or an adult.
Part 4 gives some warning signs to look for to diagnose a troubled marriage. He then helps to understand the difficulties of both parties going to counseling and how to use negotiation to approach the obstacles to that end. I found this section very insightful and right on with me and the marriages I've seen. He then makes a plead to churches to be involved in a failing marriage, to use discipline when necessary. Finally the author closes with the preventative "insurance" policies to support a strong marriage.

This book is right-on in its approach to handling family conflict. It takes a Biblical approach to forgiveness, confrontation, and how to handle the offender in future interactions. Highly recommended.

I was very disappointed in this book. The first half of the book was almost a verbatim reproduction of The Peacemaker. The second half of the book is a repeat of the initial repeat in the first half of the book but directed at dealing with children. There is no new information simply a change in wording that says the samething Ken Sande said in the Peacemaker and also in the first half of this book. The only hope for this book were the last two chapters that dealt with when your marriage gets in trouble and steps to protect your marriage. Both chapters were very vague and not very helpful. The author did say it was not his purpose to deal with marriage. However, my question is if that was not his intention why did he include a whole chapter on it? My recommendation is buy The Peacemaker and you do not need to waste your money on this book. It promises much and delivers very little.

this is a great cookbook for both experienced and novices cooks. whether you're making an occasional surprise dinner, or just need an idea for your Tuesday night dinner. i use it a lot for the ideas and baking/cooking times. also, love the updated kitchen/cooking basics section and all the great pics.
lots of wide margins allow me to record my own methods. its a great book, just what i wanted and has been a great update to by 1965 edition (even though i still refer to that one occasionally too).

We purchased this as an upgrade and replacement for an older version of the same book. The recipes are larger so there is no need to use triple batches for our large family and there's enough left over for lunch at work the next day. One of the two rivits came loose during shipping but Amazon was so good at replacing it that we got the new book before we could send back the old one.
Love this cookbook and donating to the cause!

I have a collection of the Better Homes Cook Books and love them all. This is special because it has recipes from different "famous" people, Paula Deen to name one and we all love Paula. I have ordered one for my daughters and my sisters for Christmas. In addition to all the delicious recipes, you are also donating to a cause that has or will touch most all our lives at one time or another. Buy it, you will not regret it.

It basically consits of screen shots and procedures.
It doesn't sit back and say "well, what might a user want to do here? Oh, you want to create a circle with center and radius? Then look for such and such a shape in such and such a stencil." Etc.
Because it lacks this "meta-contemplation", this manual is only as good as the programmers - it is basically like talking to the programmers, in their mindset. (I'm a programmer: this is NOT good). If what you need to draw is exactly covered by Visio, this manual may help you. If what you need to draw is not exactly covered by one of Visio's pre-packaged setups, this manual is not much help.
I work in an intensely graphical field - VLSI design. But Visio has no pre-packaged setup for my area --- the "electrical engineering" and "digital design" stencils and templates are not very useful. (This opinion confirmed by surveying my fellow engineers at Intel and AMD - all of us want to use Visio, but all find Visio sorely lacking.)
This manual is utterly useless with respect to advanced Visio, e.g. using ShapeSheets to create "smart" shapes.

Because I have mentioned my employers' names, past and present, I must add this disclaimer: this review is my own personal opinion, not the official position of Intel and AMD.
Although I daresay many engineers at Intel and AMD agree with these sentiments, it may be hard to put this on the record.
