If you are interested in fantasy fiction books like this one, read this review. At the beginning of the story, Jack and Annie go to the pyramids of Egypt. In the middle of the story they find an Egyptian ghost from the past. She is trying to look for four egyption symbols. To find out what happens to Jack and Annie, read this book. I gave it 4 stars because of it's mysterious ending.

The purpose of these little books
Is to encourage reading
And judging from the ones I've seen
They seem to be succeeding

A tree house filled with many books
That's like a time machine
To travel to another place
Just wish, and choose a scene

This third book's set upon the Nile
Inside a royal tomb
Two children help a Queen to find
Her book with spells of doom

Hieroglyphs and secret doors
A mummy's face up close
If you hate rotting bandages
You might think this one's gross

Through the eyes of these young kids
The reader will discover
Learning can be lots of fun
Once you open that cover

Inappropriate for younger children!

I can't believe that no one has commented on the subject matter of this book being highly inappropriate for young children, and entirely unsuitable for young Christian readers. I am not one to shun children's fantasy books, and we've enjoyed the other Tree House books, but this one is not for a five year old. Jack and Annie help a ghost queen find the "Book of the Dead," containing magic spells that will help her pass through the underworld (a place of horrors with lakes of fire, monsters and demons). The ghost queen has been roaming around for a thousand years trying to find this book. This nonsense, along with detailed descriptions of rotting mummies, make this book one to skip in the series.

The copy I bought for my granddaughter Kate in 1990 is tattered and worn. She and I still remember sitting in my recliner, reading to one another. I'm still reading but Kate is a Marine in Iraq right now. I email poems that we shared and others that remind her of home. I won't risk sending her OUR COPY but I've ordered another to put in our next package.

This book provides a new mix of poetry for children and goes beyond the usual mix of the familiar. All of the comforting poems you remember from your own childhoold are there but much, much more. You will love finding gems you've forgotten as well as new delights. I buy this book now for all new parents.

As a middle school reading teacher, I host an annual Poetry Reading Competition open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. For the past several years, this book has been a prize, in addition to plaques for the first and second prize winners. The best review for this book is that the children use it, read it, and often select poems from it for their entry pieces. Even better, perhaps, is that I have had thanks from many parents for awakening an interest in poetry in their children, boys and girls alike. This volume of poetry offers a full range of poems, for short to long, humorous to sublime, and in a wide range of topics. While it is just one of a wide selection of books and poets I offer my students, it is one of the most versatile. Whether teaching rhyme scheme, simile and metaphor, slanted rhyme, figurative language, or stress, this is also an invaluable part of my teaching arsenal.

Review Date: 2008-09-08
I look forward to getting my Gooseberry Patch Christmas books every year around September. It really gets me excited about getting ready for the holidays. I have to say though the excitement has been going down a bit the past couple years with this series of books. I just have not found as much use out of them as I did my first years of collecting them. In the first years I felt there we more mixes and gifts from the kitchen ideas. The crafts are great, but I'm one for buying crafts already made. I'm not very talented when it comes to sewing and I don't know how to knit or crochet. Luckily that section is relatively small and I know there are many women who enjoy that part of the book as much as I enjoy the recipes.
I do use these books and mainly go back to my first few years when I started collecting and make many gifts from the kitchen. A favorite around our neighborhood is Mom's Hot Chocolate(book 1 or 2). It's a jar mix and it's delicious. I often put it in a big mason jar and include a baggy of marshmallows and skinny peppermint sticks dipped in chocolate for stirring in a gift bag. This is always a welcome gift to my neighbors. I also make many of the coffee mixes from the first years collections. These are a great hit with my kids teachers. I'm often asked for the recipes. When you are on a budget it's a good budget friendly way to give from your heart.
If you like Christmas books I think you will enjoy this book and there are some wonderful looking recipes. If you are just now starting to collect these books I would look into some of the older books particularly 1-3 are my favorites.

I have been collecting these books since they first came out. Every year there are lots of things to see and make and do. Some things I will never do, like crocheting. Everything turns out wrong when I do it, but I like to look at the projects anyway. They give me ideas for other things. I have been a professional crafter for 19 years, and these books help keep my imagination churning out new ideas! Even if you are not a pro, these books help you develop your own style. They talk about Christmas memories, and you can't help but remember your own experiences. It's part of what makes Christmas warm and fun. My kids are grown up now, and my 22 year old daughter says they are part of her Christmas memories, going to the stores to hunt down the latest copy, going shopping then out to lunch afterwards. Maybe Im biased, but I think this book is wonderful. I think eveyone will find something to love about it too!

Good, but not Great

I was a little disappointed with this years Christmas book. The format had changed and there weren't as many simple crafts as before. I saw some crocheted dishcloths on one of the pages and searched for the instructions only to find out it was just a picture, no instructions.

The recipe section looks good and I have already made one of the recipes and it turned out great.

I don't know, just not up to the usual Gooseberry Patch standard.

Very generic and almost all of the information is in this book can be found for free doing web searches. For example, the chapter on installations is nine pages long and has no specifics. It merely repeats to consult a qualified electrician and I already knew that!

The plus side is that it is well organized and concise.

To be fair...(REVISED - I HAVE READ IT...same...2 stars)

Review Date: 2008-05-01
Sept 08, 2008 Revision: After borrrowing this book from a friend to read it thoroughly, I still give it 2 stars BUT...
- the book is fairly thorough, concise, and comprehensive in its coverage of residential solar. It does cover nearly every introductory topic and question a home owner new to solar energy might ask.
- it goes into topics such as the history of solar, developments past present and future, batteries, Do-It-Yourself issues and concerns, inverter operation and general info, identifying and hiring a contractor, inspection issues, brief mention of the NEC (Natl Electric Code), federal and state solar incentives, and so much more.
And it does this in a very few short pages - don't let the 336 pages fool you. The meat of the book is actually in less than 200 pages of writing.

Given that it covers nearly ALL the topics in one book - in ONE PLACE - in a VERY QUICK read of 200+ pages - FOR LESS THAN $15.00, I actually give this 5 STARS for VALUE AND TIME well spent. (If you have ANY technical background, you'll cover the entire book in one night of reading.) But why 2 stars then? Well, if you are serious about installing solar, after reading this book you will come to realize that you still need to know so much more. Inevitably, you WILL have to talk to your municipal inspector, spend some time researching solar contractors, and quite a bit of time understanding the requirements of the incentives offered by your utility/city/state/federal govt - in all, that's at least another 10-24 hours of research, discussion, and reading. A book costing 2-3 times as much with much more detail might therefore be more beneficial. Or simply following the FREE links, as I originally espoused below, might still be the best approach since either way it is going to take time to understand it all - but only if you really are serious about installing residential solar. Otherwise, if you simply want to gain enough insights to evaluate solar, and determine its prospects for your home and situation, then this is a very good book for you.

BTW, this book is very similar to the other "Dummies" Book - "Solar Power Your Home For Dummies (For Dummies Series)".

ORIGINAL REVIEW COMMENTS ON MAY 1, 2008: To be fair, I have not read this book. Why 5 stars? The book is a for-profit venture by the author, so recovery of time, effort, & energy is important for revenue reasons. So why write this review? After spending nearly 12-18 hours perusing AMAZON's book list on solar energy and photovoltaic systems, I was frustrated! None of the reviews on any single book seemed to be convincing enough to make me want to buy. For instance, none of the reviews mention how the books address the National Electric Code, specific wiring and disconnect installation information, electrical and other safety hazards, inspection issues, etc. For a DIY'er, these books seemed a waste of time, never mind the fact that some reviewers insisted they actually DIY'ed just from the book. It then occurred to me that dozens of resources that I had used over the past 10 years - with the exception of 2007 due to extenuating circumstances - many resources are available for free from our fantastic .GOV, .ORG, and .EDU sites like Sandia Nat'l Labs, NREL, NMSU, and CA.GOV. Folks, before you start buying books on PV left & right, be smart and leverage what your fine tax dollars paid for! I have to admit - I believe it's just stupid searching for good PV technical, installation, and detailed literature on a For-Profit Bookstore when so much is already available online for Free. Folks, use your head - our government and academic labs pioneered this from federal tax dollars. Hence, much of it is public domain! (REPLACE all "?" with "." in the following website links.) nabcep?org nmsu?edu/~tdi/index?html photovoltaics?sandia?gov and energy?ca?gov - just to name a few! Of course, if you're just not Internet savvy, not an engineer/analytical A-type personality, and highly resourceful, plus you'd rather prefer to kill trees buying a book instead of leveraging online resources that are 100 times more than what's on AMAZON, and most likely don't have the wherewithal to DIY, go ahead. It will be amazing to see how many are simply duped by the thousands of new "get rich quick" companies and businessmen entering the renewable energy markets.

My 9 yr old son loves the Magic Tree House series. I've purchased every book and have also pre-ordered books that will be released in Sept. When he's finished with each story, he gives my husband and I an oral book report. He has also learned various interesting historical facts concerning the book's theme. According to my son, there are clues throughout the stories and always a moral/lesson at the end of each story. The thing that I find funny is that he has learned that boys AND girls can actually be buddies and it's not creepy!

We love that there are so many in the collection! Start with number 1 and just continue. :)

We paired this with the Discovery Kids Magazine on Pompeii and found out that this book is a great way to find out about Pompeii and what happened, not just as a tourist attraction. It really puts kids in the moment of the time period. Every detail, down to the arrangement of the city was accurate. You can actually find a map replicating Pompeii and show your child where Jack and Annie went. Wow. Talk about subject integration! You know it is a great book when you can go down the list of Bloom's Taxonomy and use the book to create activities for every level.

We are leaving today to buy every book in the series.

Your reading this because the teacher has presented himself to you. You asked and the next step is up to you. I have found that the idea has come to my mind and then the information is presented to me. This is confirmation of it's truth and the next step in my learning. As I advance my ideas change and become more refined. We are evolving physicaly and mentally but the choice is yours. Open your mind up to the possibilities and see what can happen.

I have never seen my child go through a book this fast!!! We got it for him last night at about 6:00pm, and by 9:00am this morning he was like, "Wow, that was a great book!" He couldn't put it down. He read it at dinner last night, before he went to bed, when he woke up he immediately grabbed this book, he read it through breakfast, and he finished it in the car on our way to the store this morning. I am SHOCKED! All this from a kid who refuses to read anything for more than 20 minutes (which is the amount of time his teacher requires all the students to read their assigned books for homework). I'm buying him the Junie B. Dumb Bunny book for Christmas. It is the only other one rated 5 stars on this website.

Junie B. does it again...she makes us laugh during one of the most memorable holidays in a young child's life!! We see a soft side of Junie B. which rarely shows itself, but allows us to get to know her that much more AND teaches us a life lesson! My daughter and I loved reading this together!

Another story in the series by Park! Keeps you laughing - and will take you down memory lane as Junie B. gets ready for Christmas & will remind you of ALL those "fun" lyrics we made up to Christmas songs! She's still irrepressible & even though her language is "becoming more adult" there are still enough "Junie B.-isms" to keep you in stitches. If you're collecting the series, get going to the cash register!
