I am only 15 and I can tell the writing is flawed. She uses the same words to describe the same exact things over and over throughout her books. I dare you to count how many times the word "animated" and "chagrin" were used. The author needs to seriously widen her vocabulary. I found that I could only be interested in the exciting action sequences of the book and the rest made me struggle not to put the book down. The only reason I like this book is because of the story ( and I am sure my liking of the story has everything to do with the fact that I am a 15 year old girl). The only reason behind this books success is because of its great appeal to the teenage audience and the fact that most teenagers are too stupid to know what a good piece of literature is.

Hmm. I went to school in Utah this past year and all of my friends and their friends were raving about this book Twilight. Being the Skeptic that I am, I came to the conclusion that the only reason anyone in Utah liked it was because the author was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Now, I've got nothing against Mormons--I mean, I'm LDS too--but I do have everything against peer pressure. When I got back to my homestate of Massachusetts, I saw that people over here had gone gaga over Twilight as well, so I figured it must have been a good read, if so many people had so many good things to say about it.

I cannot believe how wrong I was. Twilight is plotless, unrealistic, and shallow. The first four hundred pages of the book (the 532 page book) are devoted first to the protagonist's--if you can even call her that--dislike of her new life, and then to how perfect and wonderful the male lead is, with a touch of how "complicated" their vampire/human relationship is. Then, the next seventy five pages or so allow for a sliver of non "Bella and Edward's relationship as a human and a vampire" related conflict, followed by fifty pages much like the first four hundred. The characters are two-dimensional and inconsistent, the plot--as previously stated--is nonexistent, and the writing is of the most cliched and juvenile I've ever experienced.

Nevertheless, I did give Twilight two stars rather than the one it deserved. This is because the book did come through with it's promise to suck you in from start to finish. For me, the reason is a combination of my persistent search for a plot, my tendancy to see the potential of novels behind the crap, and the fact that the story had me interested in a very basic, shallow way. It's a cheap imitation of a novel--even by YA standards--but an entertaining read.

I wouldn't reccommend it to anyone over the age of eleven, and I can only assume that those folks over eleven who have read it and loved it are as lacking in depth and substance as the characters themselves.

I was reluctant to read these books due to the fact that I don't usually enjoy fiction. Besides, the subject matter didn't interest me. Why would care about teenagers and vampires?! But I am so very glad I did read them. These books are very easy to read and I was drawn in immediately. I loved getting to know the characters and the complications that are inherit with their relationships. I could NOT put this down. I highly recommend the books no matter your age or gender. The author is an excellent story teller and I really enjoyed the book.

The Twilight Series

This morning I woke up tired and naked on the kitchen floor with mud underneath my nails. Last night had to be another full moon. Being a werewolf may seem grand, but it's just who I am. It's not like Hollywood. Silver won't kill me, and who can afford silver bullets anyway? Wolfs bane only makes me itch. I don't run with a pack. I'm solitary by nature, and I don't hang with vampires. Those are just the imagination of sexually repressed humans, but with a life span ranging into the centuries, I do have time to work on my stock portfolio and catch up on my reading.

I decided to delve into the young adult series, Twilight, by Stephanie Myer. She is the author of the books Twilight, along with the sequels New Moon, and Eclipse. The fourth book in the series, Breaking Dawn, will be released Aug 2, 2008. The Twilight saga follows the adventures of Isabella Swan (nicknamed Bella), a teenager who moves to Forks, Washington and finds her life turned upside down when she falls in love with a vampire named Edward Cullen.

The series has gained a cult following among young adult readers. Fans have been offically dubbed "Twilighters". Many dress up like the characters. They write their own fan fiction about them, post their tales on the Internet. When Stephanie Meyer appears at a bookstore, 3,000 people go to meet her. There are Twilight-themed rock bands. The small town of Forks on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State is a real town, and has thus received am unusual amount of attention, and now celebrates "Stephenie Meyer Day" on September 13, the date of character Bella Swan's birthday, in honor of the author.

So, just why has this series become so immensley popular? As Shakespeare knew, love burns hotter when love is forbidden, and this pair of lovers is extremley star-crossed. Bella falls in love with beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a difficult time controlling the blood lust in him, because well he's a vampire. At any moment, his passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the mortal danger. Bella would rather risk death than be apart from Edward, and so she risks her life to be near him, and thus the novel smolders with an erotic tension from their dangerous, yet chaste relationship. Throw in a rival clan of vampires who want to drain Bella dry, and you have a book that will suck you in.

I did find the series something I could sink my teeth into, though there's a little too much romance and overuse of adjectives for my taste. This book will have a strong appeal for the young adult, especially the female reader. Though, I feel that the writing and storytelling is strong enough to escape the genre. I personally enjoyed the sequels better and found the introduction of the love triangle with werewolf, Jacob Black and his pack of werewolves bent on protecting Bella from a vindictive vampire to be more suspenseful. The writing can be a bit melodramatic, but few readers will care. There's a nice mix of romance, suspense with a paranormal twist that will leave you hungry for more.

So, where does a real life werewolf find love? There are few of us. I live among humanity, but our territory is so geographically vast that I seldom catch scent or scat of my kind. As we tend to be rather solitary, it makes dating pretty difficult. I mean. It's not like I can just meet a nice bitch at the bar, or place a personal ad. Hmm, why not?

"LONE WOLF SEEKS PLAYMATE"
Single, professional, alpha male seeking a soulful, sultry female for continuing bloodline. I am long and lean with a dark, shiny coat and all my canines. I like to run through the woods, pay homage to Luna, and Wolf's Bane and silver make me itch. You are sexy, playful and willing to learn a few new tricks...

Werewolves? Vampires? Or Both? Seeking past columns? Pickup the trail at www.frommyshelf.blogspot.com Hobo wants his readers to know that he's innocent. He's wanted by the Pennsylvania Game Commission for a crime he didn't commit. He was framed by a three-legged polecat. He will see justice served, hopefully with a side of caviar.

I am too old to be reading these books really. I won't tell you that the writing in these novels is especially challenging to read, or has a ring of poetry or genius. The characters presented in these books are about as three dimensional as most high school students. So why do I like these books? Perhaps it is because Bella reminds me of myself when I was 14 years old. She is so irrationally in love, selfish, and immature, even though she almost always tries to do what she feels is the right thing. The stories are not complex, but they are quick, action packed, and each chapter ends in a cliffhanger of sorts. In addition, the books often had me laughing and/or worrying about the characters.

I really loved Eclipse. It was full of drama and tension. Critical decisions that were made on a whim in earlier books are actually thought through in Eclipse. Bella makes really tough, life-altering choices. I sympathized with her where most people criticized her. It was not easy to be in her position and I know a little of what that is like. So I found it realistic and essential to her growing up and doing the right thing for the right reasons. I felt like she really matured and got a handle on her emotions...although it wasn't easy. We forget that she is young and facing life and death on a daily basis. I am extremely exited for Breaking Dawn and hopeful there will be a happy ending.

LOVED IT! LOVED IT! LOVED IT! :D

I liked the first book in the series (Twilight) and as soon as I finished it I went out and bought New Moon. It was immensely disappointing. Bella is incredibly boring, apathetic and acts like a brat through the entire book. The Jacob Black plot was SO obvious, no person with half an iota of intelligence would have taken as long as Bella to figure out. I just wanted to get to the end so it would be over, not because I much cared what happened to her or Edward. Can't say I like a character that spends an entire novel moping and takes a guy back the first chance she gets even though he treated her like dirt (for her own good, of course...so stupid). I won't bother wasting my money on the third book. I may get it from the library. Just how many books are supposed to be in this "Saga"? I do hope Meyer has planned and plotted a solid storyline for future books with a good beginning, middle and end. This one was clearly a mess with horrible pacing, repetitive writing and no plot.

I loved this book as well. It was really difficult to read because it didn't feel as happy as Twilight. But it was full of tough choices and that is representative of life. So while most people liked this book less, it was equally significant as far as the story line and character development are concerned. It kept the page turning even faster as the drama continued. It's amazing how the author thinks of NEW ways to keep us in suspense.

I do agree that this book is a little slow to get into, but once it gets going I couldn't put it down. I would definitely recommend this to a friend and I would reread this in the future. Great character development throughout the book. This is a great book and shows that Meyer is not just a young adult writer, but a great adult writer as well. I can't wait to see what else she has for adult books.

Good, but not great.

Well...
It was a nice book, and a good read, but...
I was never really engaged in it - I mean, sure I wanted know what would happen in the end, but if someone had told me to put the book down before I read the last few pages - I would have kindly obliged.
It's nice to see Steph Meyer having a go at something other than twilight - but seriously, (and I thought this when reading the twilight series) it's a great idea - but nothing happened throughout it - there was no major twists and turns, no ups and downs that make the ending interesting - and seriously - the best endings are not always the happy ones - and this definitely applies to this story. Really - I absolutely love the twilight series because of its fantastic love story - but the best ending so far has been her first book Twilight - where the readers were left wanting more, yet even that was rather dull - to sum it up - guy and girl fall in love throughout the majority of the book (somewhat interestingly) then big event at the end when girl is almost killed, but things soon return to good old lovely dovely romance... The only thing this serious has going for it is the conflict between a vampire and a human when they fall in love, and the rest of the books just seem to follow on the story. For 'The Host' I thought it was a really good idea, just like the vampire/human idea is, but it took a while to get started, and by the time I'd reached the last couple of chapters, I realized it would never really take off. Although the ending does have a bit of a climax at the end (just like the twilight series) - it felt only like a single ripple in the sea on an incredibly calm day - barley noticeable, and certainly not a wave. And then everything went back to being lovely dovely and even better than before- sorry Steph, but that story ended for me long before I turned the last page.
So - yes I liked it, it was a great idea, and i was intrigued to know how things worked...
but i thought it was a bit bland and boring - a ripple of drama at the end of a book does not make a good book-
and seriously (as above)
'the best endings are not always the happy ones.'

Happy Reading.

The Host Delivers

Review Date: 2008-07-03
Stephenie Meyer's The Host is set in an alternative Earth, one in which parasitic aliens have invaded and taken over humans' bodies and minds. The aliens, known as souls, actually feel that their coming to Earth is a good thing for both themselves (because they cannot survive without a host body) and for Earth itself since the humans have so misused the planet and one another. As the book opens, we meet Wanderer, a soul who has already lived eight lifetimes on other planets and has begun her ninth life inside a young female human named Melanie. Wanderer expects things to go as they always have on other planets: she will take over the host body and the host itself will "fade" as she takes over. Unfortunately for Wanderer, Melanie refuses to leave and the two conflicting personalities must learn to coexist.

With over 600 pages, The Host could have been rambling, yet it has a story that kept me turning the pages (and even, I confess, peeking ahead to see how things would be going!). As Melanie and Wanderer come to a sort of truce, Melanie brings the alien to a secret hideaway of underground caves where a few rebellious humans have managed to escape the invasion and are making a life for themselves. To say that Wanderer is unwelcome is an understatement; yet the fact that she inhabits Melanie's body provides the link to Melanie's younger brother and her boyfriend, Jared. Wanderer, eventually renamed Wanda, starts to become an integral part of the community, and through her relationships, she begins to understand that her species should not have taken over Earth, whatever their gentle reasons. But how can Melanie and Wanda continue to live in one body, and what will happen once the Seeker who is desperately looking for her finds her? Will Wanda ever be accepted into the community fully, or will her history as a soul interfere forever?

I absolutely loved this book. I loved that Wanda the alien was so sympathetic, and I loved the humans' determination to avoid assimilation. The relationships are so intricate and real; I could feel the emotions both for and against accepting an alien into the small underground community. The characters are very realistically written; it would have been much too trite to have everyone either hate or love Wanda, and the amount of time it takes for her be "accepted" felt genuine. I was on the edge of my seat frequently as I awaited outcomes of dangerous missions, and I found myself near tears at losses, and yes, even acceptances. Ms. Meyer has created an entirely believable world peopled with flawed characters who found their way into my soul (pun intended). Highly recommended for action, emotional punch, and plain ole good storytelling.

I have read the whole ODD series, and I have loved them all! Odd Thomas is just a lovable character and someone you just cant get enough of. This book was probably my least favorite, however still worth the read. The humor in this book makes you laugh and it keeps you wondering what will happen next... however.... my issue with this book is that there was too many unanswered questions.... hmmmmm? Even though it wasn't my favorite, it is still a must read for the ODD lover. I am still looking forward to the next book in the series. S.L. I like Dean Koontz and have read most of his stuff. I like the character of Odd Thomas and I LOVED the first book in the series. The second two were a bit hard to get through but in the end enjoyable reads.

This one, however, is pretty bad. It should be a short story or novella. It has not so much a plot as the idea of a plot, something not fleshed out with drama but instead fluffed up with tedious purple prose. Everything Odd does is accompanied with a paragraph of metaphor. Characters are introduced to serve an initial purpose but then dropped off (literally). There's a bunch of cutesy 'I'm Dean Koontz - look how clever I am' dialog that to me doesn't really fit the character developed in the first 3 books. A variety of political stances are espoused by 'Odd Thomas' that also don't seem to fit. Ugh, and so many poorly developed plot devices.... like "wow, now Odd can share visions with others. Oh but only so the sheriff can become interested in him..." To me it feels like the publisher insisted or cajoled Mr. Koontz into writing a sequel.

I feel bad for him that he agreed and then had to work so hard to generate filler to create this brief work of wordsmithery.

I give this 2 stars instead of 1 because the cutesy dialog is amusing, even if it does take one completely out of the book. And also because I finished it. Somehow it pulled me through, even if it was with a false promise or expectation of a payoff at the end.

This new one isn't my favorite, but I bought it, read it, and it was just as crazy as every other book in the series. I love the way the ante just keeps getting upped, and upped, and upped some more, both in the vampire and lycanthrope subcultures and in Anita's personal life. I really can't thank LKH enough for what she has done for fiction. Thank you Laurell!!! Don't stop any sooner than ya gotta. I'll be truly sad when this series finally winds down.

LKH are you reading these reviews??? Get a clue girl and fix this series. Thanks to these nice people who took the time to review this item...I know not to buy it. I bought the last two...and regretted every single minute of it. Half the time I was gagging because of the bloated fake sex scenes...or groaning over the bad dialogue and plot.
I was hoping though that you might, just maybe, possibly, fix Anita and resurrect her as the great character she was. Looks like no such luck. Seems that you are just pumping out crapola to make a quick buck instead of sitting down and thinking about a good story line. As a FORMER fan I declare "shenanigans" on your idea of a novel. If you ever had hope to be remembered as a great American novelists that dream is 86'd... you will just be remembered as a great American trash writer. Good luck with sales of the next book.

I'm never disappointed by Hamilton. This was a GREAT read. Her only problem is that she doesn't write her books on "Blake" fast enough. I can't wait to see "Blake's" next adventure, but I think it's time to kill off "The Mother of All Darkness."

Laurell, thanks for the wonderful entertainment!

After reading the book, all I can pretty much say is that there is no where near the amount of sex as there usually is.Though I may have not taken any breaks when reading this, looking back I can hardly remember what the book was even about. I can only hope that this was a "filler" book - a lousy one at that - and the next book will have a plot, still less sex, and all the characters will be back to their semi-normal selves.

Wasn't really disapointed.

And thats the scary part. I knew just by reading the first chapter before I even bought the book exactly what I was in for. Sadly I bought it anyway. More pointless, depressing, emotional, conversations before during and after sex and not a whole lot of anything else. Not any more than the others but not any less. I think the last good book in the series was the one where Anita went to help Edward and they kicked some good old fashioned human a**.
Why do I keep spending money on these books? It's because I'm attached to the characters. Good authors make me want to be part of their charcters lives and LKH managed to do that for me. Unfortanutly I don't think I can read much more of the garbage the Anita Blake series has become. Pathetic that I keep hopeing things will change.
Please Ms. Hamiltion. I love Anita and all her guys. HER guys not all the random sex partners. Give the woman some control over the sex issue, make the number of guys shes screwing a set number, get over the emotional sex scenes, get back to battles not fought with sex, and let Anita make up her darn mind to be happy with the men she has. I'm sick of the guilt and pity parties. Wouldn't mind killing off Richard either.

Whedom continues to impress me with beautiful writing that tugs at my heartstrings and at the same time has me on the edge of my seat. The artwork is beautiful for a comic and captures moments in time that I thought could only be done on film. Both collections are well worth it to any fan of the series.

good continue of the saga

Thisis the second part of the Buffy's eighth season, only released on comicbooks, and I think that eventhough it's on TV, it's still amazing! I want more... highly recommended!

Almost as good as if it were on DVD...

Joss Whedon is the man. He's the best script-writer television has ever had, and in his own rights I feel he's the Shakespeare of our time (what with re-inventing the English language ad hoc).

If you loved Buffy, this is worth reading to continue where Season 7 left off. The characters stay in character, and talk the talk. My only complaint is that their images are not always exactly like the actors - but given my own artistic drawing talents, I'm not one to criticize.

Buy this, read it, love it.

Excellent!

Didn't like the first issue of S8 that much, but this was awesome. Faith back, and the character done fairly well, though I would have preferred a little more bonding with the bad guy (girl) to show the development of the relationship. The final, out-of-arc story at the end was classic Whedon, lots of dream sequences etc well done. I really liked it!

Has it's moments but disappointing

I was very psyched by the first volume of Season 8 and have had this item saved on my wishlist for months now. All this pent up anticipatation may explain my dissatisfaction with the second volume. The Faith side story starts out with some depth and potential, but the storyline borders on recycling. I simply cannot believe that an upper class elitist Brit was the best they could come up with as a foil for Faith. The interchanges seemed stilted and the villain more petulant and annoying than sinister or frightening. Faith has attachment issues and a hard time not switching sides. We get it. It's just a stretch to think that a new gal pal of 36 hours is the missing link that tempts her back to the dark side...

Since this was the predominant story line it really weighted my review, BUT the bright spot was the latter story (penned of course it would seem by the lucky fellow himself)chocked full of cameos and Buffy-Willow wittilogue.

Last time I checked, Joss Whedon was not soliciting my consultation before making his next creative decision, nor can I blame him. However, it's obvious to any Buffy/Angel/Firefly fan that the closer Joss is to writing/directing any episode, the better the finished product. Of course he can't be at all places at all times, BUT I am willing to bet my Sarah Michelle Gellar autographed Underoos that he had less hands-on during the production of this volume than the first.

I am so disappointed with this series. I started out loving the silly blond queen but she is still just that. This series has no real growth and the story is going nowhere. In fact, it just got worse with the return of the Ant who is more annoying then ever. I could care less what happens to any of these characters and I even hate a couple of them. Like Nick, get the frick over it man! I'll probably keep reading it in hope of a new development and just because it's so easy to read. I could finish one of these books in three hours.

When MJD's pre-note mentioned she was taking the story into a more serious vein (no pun intended), fans weren't prepared for how serious it was going to get with the unexpected, shocking deaths of Garrett and Antonia. Queen Betsy is struggling to maintain her humanity in the presence of the inhumanity around her, and I'm reminded of another Queen by the name of Elizabeth I and her first shaky months as Queen of England. The red hair Betsy dons is a tip off. Do I sense a parallel here? Will Betsy be requiring her own Walsingham to help her steer a course of her new 'kingdom' and handle all the conflicting advice she is receiving from the older, more experienced vamps around her, i.e. Sinclair and Tina. She is learning to trust her own instincts and coming into her true powers as Queen of the Undead and I think we'll in be for a very pleasant surprise - that is, if she can find just the right pair of shoes!

The vampire king and queen, newlyweds Eric Sinclair and Betsy Taylor look forward to a long serene honeymoon in which they take nips from one another in between shoe shopping. Alas that is not to be for the royal undead. Fiend Garrett healing from some recent assaults informs the majestic pair that his fiend friends have been dining on his blood.

Thus the Twin Cities' fiends are recovering, but also hold culpable Betsy for their woes; they declared she must die. Meanwhile Nick asks Betsy for help on several murder investigations; she reluctantly agrees in order to make amends to him. Only she finds herself facing her worst nightmare of her existence, the ghost of her stepmother.

Book seven of the Undead and Un... is an engaging entry as Betsy born the queen tries to act regal beyond her shoes, but needs to pay off a debt first. The story line is the usual humor expected from a MaryJanice Davidson tale as Betsy learns a lesson that vampirism is not the road to hell; good intentions are. Fans of the series will enjoy the antics of the newlyweds as her family drives her insane while she lands in one dangerous even to an undead predicament after another.

I love all the Undead books. I am shocked at some of the reviews here. At the very beginning of the the book MaryJanice tells us the books are taking a slightly different turn and this is the first book in a series of at least three books. I loved the book. I did laugh at loud and the new stories lines look good. The only reason I did not give it 5 star is because I miss the romance between Betsy and Sinclair. I would recommend this book to anyone. Cann't wait for the next one!!

Hmm..good but not my fave Betsy book

I must say first off that I absolutely love MJD and basically every series she has written. I understand that this is the first of a new 3 book "arc" or story line but overall I was a little dissapointed by the book.

***Spoiler alert***

I was really really mad that Antonia and George got killed off. I loved their characters and while I understand that maybe Betsy needed to see deaths in order to grow as Queen, I wasn't happy about it.

I don't really get the Ant coming back and was a little confused by it. Also the grandpa parts were strange to me, what was the point of that?

I don't really care for Nick and hope he is gone for good. Overall his character kinda bugs me, and since he is in this book so much I was annoyed a lot.

Will I buy the next book? Of course, it's Queen Betsy after all! But I do hope the next book isn't quite as depressing or confusing.
