If you think you or someone you know might have OCD, I highly recommend this book.

If you are looking for a book on OCD that goes way above and beoynd to provide real-life stories of those suffering with OCD, this is the book for you.

For many years I was misdiagnosed and misinformed on the subject of OCD. Although I had many OCD symptoms, doctors attributed my symptoms to depression. This book gave me the information needed to get properly diagnosed and treated for OCD.

Great and Unusual Book

Review Date: 2003-09-06
Dr. Osborn does a great work with this book. In the early chapters he provides case histories that let us see first hand what OCD is. Then he provides a diagnostic test for self-evaluation. Then he cuts loose with the definitions. OCD thoughts fall into four categories, fear of contamination (filth), fear of hurting others or oneself (harm), fantasies of impulse (lust) and fear of hurting God or one's relationship. (blasphemy). He does not cover hoarding or collecting behaviors in detail, but mentions the possible relationships.

Dr. Osborn's principle insight is that OCD is neurobiological in origin, and that it is successfully treated with serotonin reuptake inhibitors like Zoloft and Prozac. He argues that it should be renamed "basal ganglia" disorder, since this is the brain center implicated (along with the thinking trail to the frontal lobe). I hope this proposal is adopted.

The author uses four criteria to establish an OCD thought, and its matching, anxiety reducing behavior, which are the obsession and the compulsion respectively. Such thoughts have four properties which can be remembered by the mnemonic 2IRU. OCD thoughts are inappropriate, intrusive, recurrent and unwanted. This is what distinguishes them from addictive thoughts.

This book unlocked for me an understanding of a multigenerational difficulty and for Dr. Osborn's many insights I am grateful.

This book is a classic educational tool for priests in confessionals and all RC teachers of religion that only HARM is done by portraying God as waiting like a Vulture to pounce on every Catholic with OCD and tell him/her that a single thought is enough to guarantee Everlasting Damnation to Hell. There is no God like that.

I love this book

You have the relationship of the family, despite all the things trying to erode them from the outside, teachers, church members, co-workers and bosses. There is their strong faith too that makes the family appealing even to non-believers like me.
There are lines in this book that made my eyes tear up. When I was mature enough to be moved by this book, the ending made me bawl my eyes out.

There were interesting twists and turns in the story. You'll never really expect the end. It will punch you in the gut.
This book is Orson Scott Card at is finest. Writing a powerful story with characters based on him and his own family. It's right there with Ender's Game and Seventh Son, two other fine books by Orson Scott Card.

its been a while since I read Enders Game, but this might be the best book of Cards that I have read

Review Date: 2008-04-15
Over the years I have read several of Cards books. When his first stories came out I thought that I would be reading every one of them because they were so great. However, over time, I started to pick up one story after another that left me totally unsatisfied. What makes me so up-beat about Lost Boys is that it is really an adult novel that works well on several levels.

First of all, the story is very complicated. Card surrounds this premise with layer upon layer of details that you just don't ordinarily find in genre writing. This got a little long winded at times and I thought that Cards foray into Mormonism, though interesting, was way to predominant. It would have been great if he had edited it down enough so that it would have meshed nicely with the computer programing, but this is just a little bit of a nit-picking exercise on my part.

Secondly, the characters are great. They are based on himself and his family, and this really adds a level of detail that is just inspiring. I could read mundane little episodes and was just sucked into passage after passage. In a lot of ways, this story is lots of small trails that barely link together. In the end they do, like in To Kill A Mocking Bird.

Two reasons for my not giving this book five stars are that the parents a more than a little blind to some goings on of the eldest child. It was frustrating for me to see that they were not asking the right questions or any questions at all. And secondly, as I said before, at times the book slows down to the point of a stall when Card goes into just a little too much detail such as with the Mormon Church.

I think that if you like Cards work, you would really enjoy this story. Well worth picking up. Especially if you are searching for genre writing that is just a little more adult and better thought out than the usual fare.

I am a Orson Scott Card fan, however this story was just pointless. Although it is well written, and the characters are interesting, the story is just a recruting story for the Mormon church. I have nothing againt the LDS cgurch, and as a matter of fact found the family in the story wonderful... ipossibly SO wonderful. A fantasy always gets along no problem family. The real plot goes nowhere slow... painfully slow. Just not interesting. Much better stories out there to devote time to.

This anthology was better than I thought it would be. The stories by L.A. Banks, J.M. Jeffries and Seressia Glass were very entertaining. However, the Natalie Dunbar story could have been better. It seemed liked it was rushed and badly edited. For some reason it just reads like chunks of this story were omitted for brevity.

Oh, Boy! What a superb collection starting with LA Banks' Heat right through to Natalie Dunbar's Out of the Dark. I just had to order this book, being a dedicated reader and addicted fan of LA Banks' Vampire Huntress books, and after hearing a lot of good reports from other readers. I was not disappointed in any way and the fact that the individual stories were connected (through both characters and the central location) added rather than detracted from my reading enjoyment. This does not feel as if you are reading four short stories by four different authors, yes you will notice a change in the writing but the continuity is there and you feel as if you are reading a single work of fiction. An excellent read that I would be happy to recommend to anyone who likes supernatural/romance reading material.

Welcome to the French Quarter Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, where werewolves, vampires, and humans drink, gamble and have a merry good time.

Heat by L.A. Banks

Werewolf Butch Maverick works for the Preternatural Authorities and his latest assignment is to hunt down the robberies that have been causing major wolf-style mayhem throughout the Midwest, before the humans decide to take matters into their own hands. Butch ends up the one place that he thought he would never return to - the French Quarter Hotel and where his old flame, Laurel, heads the Security Operations. To make matters worse, with the full moon just days away it is very difficult for Butch to concentrate on his job at hand with Laurel in full-blown heat!

With a title like Heat you can bet your bottom dollar that you are in store for some mega-hot, mind-blowing sex! Readers, I am glad to say that L.A. Banks did not disappoint in that department. Man oh man! As the investigation heats up, so does the relationship between Butch and Laurel. My mind was constantly clouded with massive desire and thrilling suspense. As a couple, and independently, Butch and Laurel are very headstrong, alpha-type characters that showcase enormous raw passion and great stamina. Ms. Banks did a wonderful job of binding a fascinating, action-packed, zealous, heart-pounding story that will instantly capture your interest within seconds of its beginning.

The Hunger Within by J.M. Jeffries

After many years of being under the care of a powerful Temple werewolf clan, Solange Warwick has decided to leave the clan's casino and branch out on her own. This was a very difficult decision for Solange; she knows that it is one that must be made because of her past. However, before she can break her ties to the clan, Solange is pulled into a dangerous undercover sting operation with the drop-dead gorgeous casino bouncer, Jarred Maitland.

Jarred Maitland is an undercover FBI agent. His current mission is to bring down the notorious Kenny Brooks. For the past fifteen years, the FBI has known that Brooks was behind at least half a dozen casino robberies; however, they had no proof and it was up to Jarred to infiltrate Brook's gang before the next big robbery.

Readers, you are about to take one red-hot journey with The Hunger Within by J.M. Jeffries. This storyline has a perfect mix of suspense, sex and adventure that is sure to get your juices flowing. From the get go, the chemistry between Solange and Jarred is smoking hot and passionate. As the story progress, the attraction between the couple becomes more pronounced and the danger that threatens them intensifies to a molting hot boiling point. There were moments where my heart was racing from the thrilling adventure and times where I was overflowing with great desire from Solange and Jarred sexual relations. This is a great story that I'm sure readers who love spicy romance and gripping suspense will find it quite enjoyable.

Double Down by Seressia Glass

With her parents about to retire from running the French Quarter Hotel and Casino, everyone is eagerly waiting to see if Simone Temple and her brother are able to handle taking over their parents' rule and keeping the hotel afloat. Simone's main task is to secure a contract with Kadim, the Great Magician, but Kadim isn't cooperating. Not about to accept his agent's refusal, Simone is determined to change Kadim's mind by any means necessary, even if it means hunting him down and meeting him face-to-face in his mysterious private domain. Upon her arrival, Simone gains more than she bargains for as she discovers that Kadim has many shocking secrets. And, if that isn't enough, a menace from Kadim's past is seeking vengeance.

Double Down is a sexy thriller that is sure to rapidly increase your body temperature. Simone is a feisty character who's intent on making Kadim see things her way, while Kadim's only goal is to prove to Simone that they belong together. As these two fascinating characters are brought together, the sparks fly and the danger escalates. Seressia Glass has crafted a lot of exhilarating suspense and spine-tingling passion within that had me totally captivated from the start to finish. The plot was tight and the couple's chemistry is wickedly lustful. Secrets and danger blend together in a completly satisfying mix in Ms. Glass's compelling tale, Double Down.

Out of the Dark by Natalie Dunbar

Kellie Monroe was only in Las Vegas to bury her beloved grandmother; however, before she could make the funeral arrangements, Kellie is shocked beyond belief when a pack of rogue werewolves steal her grandmother's body and are hunting her, seeking a valuable medallion that her grandmother left in her possession. After Kellie is violently attacked and left for dead by the band of werewolves, she awakes in the hospital to find a handsome member of the Preternatural Police Force by the name of Garen Roy in her room filled with questions and demanding that once she is released she is to remain under his protection until the bandits are caught.

Intense danger, thrilling suspense and scrumptious bed play make Out of the Dark a first-rate, exciting read. From the jump-start, Natalie Dunbar successfully intrigued me with an electrifying opening that had me firmly griping my seat as I eagerly turned page after page to discover how the story would unfold. Kellie and Garen are the perfect couple; they complimented each other very well both in and out of bed and they also showcased impulsiveness, strong-willed, determination. Readers, you are in a sweet, spicy treat with this one. This is one sexually charged, action-packed novella that is bound to leave you breathless with desire all while fulfilling your suspenseful craving.

Now you have it! Four superb, explosive werewolf tales that are sure to cause a sizzling frisson reaction. Each story was different; yet, the same as they all revolved around dangerous situations within the French Quarter Hotel and Casino. There was never one lackluster moment as all the four stories were very well written, highly entertaining and contained enough spice to satisfy any need. Run don't walk to purchase Vegas Bites, it's a fantastic anthology!

I have read a lot of vampire books in my short life and all of them have been really good. From the Sookie Stackhouse series (that is being turned into a tv series) to even an Anne Rice novel or two I have read them all (well not all really but i am darn close). This series by Mari Mancusi is a really good young adult read. I am a 17 year old girl and i can tell that this series is targeted more towards people of my age group and sex and it deffinately hit its mark. Sunny and Rayne are two very good examples of girls in this day and age. I for one don't know which one i identify with more!

Keri Arthur is a wonderful author. I started reading her books a couple of years ago. Starting with Riley Jensen and tresgressing back to others. So now, Nikki and Michael are my second choice. I can't put any of the Nikki and Michael books down. I get so wrapped up with the characters that my husband gets jealous. Keri has a way of writing that you feel you are actually watching the scenes play out in your mind. It is wonderful. Makes me feel like a child again, playing imaginary games inside and out doors. Thank you Keri for your wonderful works of art!

Book 3 of the Nikki and Michael series. This time the case Nikki deals with hits closer to home. Nikki also tells Michael that she wants to be with him, but he has to accept her as a full time partner in their cases. Great read, really keeps you hanging. There is a little bit of romance in this series, but it isn't too heavy. Book still falls under sci-fi/fanstasy.

This was my first Keri Arthur book, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. The plot was fast paced, well-crafted and believable. The romance (which was also well done and well developed) wasn't the main thrust of the book, the story was. The only problem I had with this particular book is that I didn't get a complete mental image of the three main characters, Jake, Nikki and Michael. I suspect that the problem was that I hadn't read the other books in the series published before this one. But, since I loved this one so much, I intend to not only read those books, but the rest of Ms. Arthur's books. A great read!

I first read this book when I was in middle school (well over 10 years ago), and to this day I still clearly remember it and have fond memories of it, although I've moved on to more "intellectual" (though less fun!) fare.

Without a doubt, the Casteel series is one of the best, and this book is the best book in the series. It probably doesn't hurt that I think Troy shaped my views on what an ideal boyfriend was like for the rest of my life.

It's a great book where you really, really root for Heaven and feel her pain and sadness when near the end (I don't want to spoil it.) There was a part in the book that absolutely crushed me, and even though I was pretty young at the time, I consider that to be a pretty good sign of a decent book.

This is the last book VC herself completed before her death, and the best one, in my opinion. She gave it her all and the result is a book you'll want to read over and over again. It's also a book that, if you read it only once in your life, you'll never forget it. I felt actual pain reading this very sad book.

The story picks up where "Heaven" left off. Heaven has arrived at the Boston Airport and her mother's family is there to meet her and take her back to their mansion. There she encounters secrets and oddities; she'll be forced to grow up quickly in an all-girls' school and prove her worth; she'll also discover a mysterious cottage where a dreamy artist, Troy, brings out passion in her like she's never known before. Sadly, though, this will be a short, tragic love.

There are some shockers in this book and Heaven will be forced to make some tough choices: Does she cut off the Casteel clan for good or reunite her childhood family? Does she leave Winnerrow behind or go back to it? Does she want to know the truth or live in a fantasy world? What happens to the love of her life (Troy), and with Logan? Does she make peace with Luke, or remain bitter toward him?

I agree with the person who said this series should've ended here. The books that follow in this series are inconsistent in plots and details and confuse the reader. But read "Heaven" and "Dark Angel", and you won't be disappointed.

The book Dark Angel is the sequel to V.C. Andrews book Heaven. In Dark Angel a girl named Heaven leaves her home in a poor town in the mountains of West Virginia, the Willies, to live with her grandmother in Boston. In this book Heaven is now 17 and she wants to go to college. But inorder to do that she must get her rich grandmother to like her enough in order for her to get money to go. But her plane to get the cash starts to unravel when she finds her grandmother isn't excactly someone who cares for people too much.
Well I had to read a book written by a Virginia author and I chose this one because of the great reveiws it had gotten. Mainly girls will like this book because Heaven is in a stage in her life in which all girls will have to go through.
The books plot was mostly about Heaven trying to get money for college so she can go and be the first Casteel to get into college. The descriptions of each character gave you a very clear image of each the person. Their expressions, movements, and physical features gave each charcter their own personality. The theme of the story was a rages to riches kinda of thing. Where Heaven moves from a run down shack in the Willies to a masion in the rich part of Boston. The whole story is told in Heaven's words so its her on oppinion on her new life, not a narrator's which is good. I enjoyed the book alot, every time I read a page I just wanted to see what happens in the next one.

This is a good book.

This book is called Dark Angel by V.C Andrews. The plot of the story is a girl named Heaven whose father sold her for 500 dollars and then went to her rich grandparents. The main idea of this book is to love your family even if they do not seem to love you, because you might not see them again.

An example of this would be when Heavens little brother and sister don't remember her (they were sold to another family for 500 dollars by her pa.) Another is when Heaven was going to marry Troy and could not because she finds out Troy is really her uncle.

In this book it may seem that many bad things happen, but there are also some good things, such as when Heaven arrived at her grandparents' rich house. Also, when Heaven's grandpa fixed the cabin she was born and raised in.

I would recommend this book because it is filled with mystery and secrets. It also has a lot of drama.

Best vampire story ever. Sure, some might argue that some of our blood-sucking heroine's feats are ridiculously far-fetched, but c'mon, it's fiction. I just like that the plot is really fast-paced, engaging, and has a solid foundation. Pike's interpretation of the vampire makes more sense than some other vampire characters. Plus, she could probably kick their butts. The Last Vampire rules!

The start of a great series...

Sita, the main character of the book is a 5,000-year-old vampire, who looks 20, and believes she is the last vampire. Sita goes by many names but chooses the name of Alisa Perne as she walks among the humans on Earth. She soon realizes that she is being hunted by someone who knows what she is. She thinks it might be the client of a detective she killed in self-defense. The detective had found out her secret and was a threat.

To figure out who is hunting her, she goes to high school and makes friends with the detective's shy son Ray and then falls in love with him.

She begins to think Ray is actually her old love Rama reincarnated.

Another person from her past, her old enemy Yaksha, is actually following her, trying to kill her to atone for his sins. Yaksha is her creator and the most powerful Vampire ever. Sita was led to believe that she had killed him long ago.

Then there's Seymore. Seymore is a student who wants to become a vampire, after he figures out Sita's secret.

Can Sita and Ray be together and be happy? What will happen when Sita meets up with Yaksha after all these years? Will Seymore become a vampire? Can Sita ever be free of her past? Read The Last Vampire to find out!

I especially liked...

The way Sita was made to be just a regular person with hopes and dreams and feelings just like us. Not All moody and dark like other vamp novels.

I didn't like...

There was nothing that I did not like about this book.

When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...

To write the author and tell him to make some more about this wonderful character

This Book made me feel...

Very upbeat and pumped up with adrenaline.

The author of this Book...

Christopher Pike: is one of my favorites even thought he writes books for teens I have tried to keep up with his books as an adult.

I recommend this Book because...

It is a good read with all the makings of a movie. The romance did not outwiegh the suspense and the action.

Further Comments...

I was so glad to find out that he made 5 more books in this series and the 2nd was just as good if not better than the 1st.

I read The Last Vampire series when i was 13, which i am now 22, and the story still affects me today. I have to say that this series is still a favorite of mine, and I remember that when i finished the last book I felt an emptyness for it being over, so I read it again. Sita goes through things that no vampire in any other story has gone through (I dont want to ruin it), and it is an emotional ride. Read this series and you will never forget it!

This book was really good i could hardly put it down. Sita or Alisa Perne is telling the story of her life. She also explaines her fears. When she falls in love with a boy named, Ray Riley, she finds out that he is in danger.Pat, Ray's girlfriend, is suspicious of Alisa. I could tell that Pat was very upset. I like this book because I love to read about vampires. I think others should read it. It's a good book! So drop what your doing and read it or Sita will get you! Beware of vampires.........

The Last Vampire is a good horror novel, but fails to draw you in completely. The main character, Alisa Perne, or Sita, is a stunning, petite blonde who has lived as a wandering vampire for five thousand years. It gets tiring hearing her talk about how beautiful she is, and how she knows men love to look at her body. It is also tiring as she lists endless super-human traits she owns that make her invincible. Pike seems like he just couldn't stop listing abilities. His writing is flawed in places.

What makes this story interesting is that Pike has removed the setting from Transylvania to a place no one associates with vampires - India. And he works in Krishna as a character. You know - the blue dude with the flute whom Hare Krishas worship.

I will read the rest of the series, but Pike has failed in creating a heroine that readers can relate to and root for. I get tired of all the men eating out of her hand.

I'm a middle school teacher, and several of these stories are great to teach inferencing and predicting. Some stories may not be appropriate for middle school age.

My teacher used "The World's Shortest Stories" for a lesson one day. I've never paid so much attention during one class period! I thought it was incredible the way these tiny, 55-word stories could be so little, yet have so much meaning behind them. Each story was thought provoking. Dispite their size, they all have some kind of "twist" to it. I was inspired and immediately wanted to write my own 55-word story.

If you're looking for inspiration for writing, this is for you. If you're a great writer and want to try this style of writing, you have to check it out. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Even if you don't want to write a 55-word story yourself, this book will get you thinking differently. It's almost like solving puzzles, reading these stories. Murder, Love, Horror, Suspense... that's not all the book is about. There's many more topics inside. No one story is like the other. I found this book one of the best books I've come across.

Absolutely terrible. The "authors" in this collection are amateurs who consistently fall victim to the predictable traps. These stories are filled with cliches, gimmicks and unsurprising surprise endings. Even worse, it feels as if they were all written by the same unimaginative author with a corny sense of humor. Get one of the Flash Fiction or Sudden Fiction collections instead if you're looking for something that actually has some literary value.

This book is one that I reread frequently, as the stories are indeed the perfect length. Broken into categories, the stories cover the range of plot possibilities and human emotions, and are perfect for the shorter-attention span of modern readers. Fifty-five fiction even accepts submissions from regular authors. Try writing one yourself today!

As with any collection of short stories, there are good ones and there are bad ones. Given the incredibly difficult nature of these stories (55 words), the balance is tipped toward the bad. I'd say that 10% of the stories are awful, 70% are completely forgettable, 10% are good but utterly predictable, and 10% are truly worth reading.

In the case of the bad ones, I think it's often that the author tried too hard for the surprise twist and either ruined a great idea or ended up spelling out too much to the reader. The good stories don't explain everything, rather, they leave it up to the imagination and intelligence of the reader to understand the implications. I think a lot of writers do not give readers enough credit, and to be sure they get the point across they over-explain and beat the idea into the ground - ruining the story. The good ones are subtle and leave you with that, "Oh? OH!" feeling.

The few that are really good in this book are definitely worth reading, just be prepared to wade through a whole lot that are not. On the up side, they won't take you long, being as short as they are.

If the previous volume contributed to the backbone of the story, this one came down packed with action. After being separated from the rest of their army, Guts and Casca have to face a large group of enemies by themselves in one of the best fights so far. Besides that, the war against Chuda intensifies, and the Hawks accept to go on a suicide mission.

One aspect that made this volume really special for me is that Casca opens up to Guts and we get to understand why she worships Griffith so much, as well as how much Griffith's dream matters to him and the things he is willing to give up for it. Now it is also easier to understand how Guts joining the band affected Casca's life and the reasons behind her resentment.

I mentioned in my review of the previous volume that I thought that there were some philosophical elements introduced in the plot, and the trend continues here. There are a couple of discussions about dreams and honor that provide the story with a depth not commonly observed in the genre. There is also a big surprise. Did you ever imagine that you would see Guts make a joke? WOW! That was certainly a first, and it caught me so off guard that I could not contain a loud chuckle. I hope you enjoy this installment as much as I did!

Our hero has been dragged along by fate and has lived in the shadow of Griffith's dream. Through his pleasing interlude with Caska and a very drawn out sword battle, he becomes his own man. In this story of dreams, I can see this will be a major plot point.

The story is building nicely toward the Hawks victory and undoubted crushing by the demon's fate.

Awesome!!!!
It's really completely different from the anime, the manga let's you explore the charaters in a way you just can't during the anime. I am a huge fan of the cartoon, so the comics make me enjoy what I know about the characters already.

Berserk, in the previous volume, lost a lot of momentum during the "political intrigue" part of the story. It just didn't seem like the same old Berserk I had come to know and love, especially after getting five volumes of almost constant battling and bloodshed with only enough story to reveal character motivation. Luckily, though, by the end of the last volume, I knew that this volume and the ones following would be exciting (especially since I've seen the anime), and the slow, action-driven story is about to get deep and dark, as it was in the beginning volumes.

In volume seven, Guts and Casca finally come to an understanding with each other, and Guts gains a title that will follow him on the battlefield and make him both feared and hated. Also, a little of Casca's history with the Band of the Hawk, as well as some of Griffith's darker side, is revealed. By the end, the Band of the Hawk are on the war path once again, but this time it's against an opponent that may not be beatable.

Through the first seven volumes of the Berserk manga, I only found an issue with only two of them. One was more of a moral issue than anything else, and the other was simply that I was bored with the happenings and the plot-advancement. Now that things are back to norm for the manga, I don't expect many more disappointments, and I can, in fact, guarantee that Berserk will only get better from here on out, especially since the end of the Guts's history is near and his constant battle against demons and monsters in his present life is about to continue. So, if you liked the anime or have started reading the manga, then now is not to time to drop out of it; Berserk still is one of the better manga on the market today, and I highly recommend it to adult readers.
