It is nice to read about people who want to lead a healthier lifestyle and are committed to work on improving their body, their eating habits, and their exercise routine. It's also nice to read about their struggles, roadblocks, etc. and that the ultimate goal takes patience, change, and courage.

With out doubt one of the really inspired writings ever penned!
Og Mandino led a remarkable career after a rocky start, he writes
in a way that every generation and every level of reader can gain something from.It gives the reader a clearly defined set of principles to live by, the scrolls help to establish new habits and can forever be there for a guiding set of reference points throughout your life.I have studied many of his books and read from this for over 25 years. Thanks to my friend Dave Blanchard, President of the OG Group
I continue to learn from the scrolls that Og so beautifully provides. This book was a tremendous motivation for me to re-write my 1st book that spurred my career immensely, Lessons From Great Lives, learn to be rich in all areas of your life. I love the study of great lives and Og would be one of those indeed to learn from.It has served as a treasure for millions for more than 30 years.I couldn't recommend a book with any more passion.

I'm starting the program on Monday as advised in the book, it's exciting.

This is an intense Og Mandino book as someone said, "no punches pulled"

His other books like the greatest miracle, the gift, the 12th angel, mission:success, are all much more light hearted.

I think it may be beneficial for new Og readers to read those first to truly understand what a sweet, special man Og Mandino is. The intensity of this book is absolutley awesome for success seekers, but I would not want to turn anyone off the other heart touching stories Og has written.

He was an amazing writer and a super sweet man...and I have a plan one day to distribute "The Greatest Miracle in the World Books" to everyone I meet who is in any form of despair or encountering any challenge. It was an answer to my prayers when I read it.

So I would recommend this book to serious success seekers, just for the list at the end of his favorite off the wall success books if nothing else. And I would definatley recommend any other Og book to anybody at all, their beautiful writing.

I read this book everyday and have probably read the entire thing about 20 plus times.

Not only has it transformed the way I look at the world and myself, but it has given me a new appreciation for how amazing life can be if you are courageous enough to work on your bad habits (the main tenant of the book) and to improve your good habits.

This should not be quickly glimpsed at and tossed aside as something rudimentary and simple, but it should be taken very seriously because it can teach you lifelong lessons about values and visions that will make you a person who everyone will want to be around.

Simple...yes, profound and life-alterning...a definite yes.

I picked this book up after leafing through it a bit, and what I found intrigued me to buy it. It's an interesting journey through life and growth, offering insight along the way. "The Laws of Spirit" can be read quickly, but should be savored for its rich content. Our life is always open to transformation, and only we have the power to fully direct that transformation. All life is a journey, and this books helps lay it out in simple terms to achieve balance in life. Elaine Williams

I came across this little book completely by accident (fate?) in a bookcase/library of about 800 books while renting a house for a few weeks scouting locations for my company. I was at a very low point in my life and this book taught me a new way of looking at almost every detail. This particular Dan Millman book shows you how we make life so much more difficult than it has to be. I have purchased and given away almost 40 copies of this book to friends, family, and sometimes to people I have just met or barely know that seem lost or overwhelmed with life. Suggestion: Find a spot that is special to you to sit back and absorb this book...it's an easy "short read" and I hope it speaks to you as it has to me and many others.

This CD fills the very essence of my soul! As a Franciscan religious I appreciate the beauty and splendor of all of God's creation! John O'Donahue has captured the essence of the Franciscan Spirit! St. Francis called everything by the intimate name of "brother" and "sister"! As St. Francis says, "Put on new glasses" "adjust your focus" and you will see beauty all around you." With St. Francis we can all say "My God and My All"! Thank you and God bless you, Sister Rose Therese Di Gregorio OSF.

Love of the Beautiful; God; and the Passing of John O'Donohue
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-25
I discovered John O'Donohue this past year (see my review "Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom") and have been working ever since to bring him to San Francisco's East Bay to speak and conduct a retreat. Unfortunately, as I was putting pen to paper to write my review of "The Invisible Embrace - Beauty," I learned he died in his sleep, January 3, 2008, on vacation near Avignon. He was just 53. O'Donohue was an original thinker, a gifted writer, and a philosopher that fully understood the human condition and emphasized the triumphal power of divine love.

"Beauty" outlines another encounter with the divine. The majesty of beauty is its gracious wholesomeness. The Beautiful unifies feeling, thought, and dream. The book "endeavors to mirror this one-ment." This acquaintance coaxes the soul to the land of wonder where the journey becomes a bright path between source and horizon, awakening and surrender.

O'Donohue begins "Beauty" with the the call of beauty; where it dwells; its music; its color; and the joy of its shapes. He then explores imagination (beauty's entrance), attraction (the eros of beauty), and the beauty of the flaw. He concludes with beauty's relationship to death and God.

"When we lose sight of beauty our struggle becomes tired and functional. When we expect and engage the Beautiful, a new fluency is set free within us and between us. The heart becomes rekindled and our lives brighten with unexpected courage."

The "cry of our times" is to awaken beauty as we feel most alive in the presence of beauty for it meets the needs of our soul. And once awakened, there is a great sense of homecoming as beauty is God. Love of the beautiful is a secret and sacred passion of all as it is embedded in our search for God.

O'Donohue has written another "Beautiful" book that will serve as a reference guide for years to come.

For those who want to learn more about John O'Donohue and his literary contribution, I have included a number internet posts made on the event of his death:

* I too was touched so deeply by John O'Donohue - by his writings which my wife shared with me a few years ago.
* I'm very saddened by the passing of John O' Donohue. Though I never had the privilege of meeting him I felt I knew him through his work. He was truly a beacon of light and love. God bless him on his eternal journey.
* I am so saddened by John O'Donohue's passing. For over eleven years I have absorbed his books which have made me understand and appreciate my Celtic-Catholic roots. Slan agus beannacht leat.
* He was a breath of fresh air and sunshine enfolding wonderful wit and wisdom with a passion for the Eternal.
* When I read Anam Chara, I was stunned by how much I was moved by his words and ideas. It was at once comforting and thought provoking. I am so very grateful that John shared himself with the world.
* John constantly called us to awaken to the great mystery of which we are apart and to become more and more aware of the intimacy we share with all...I am deeply grateful to him for the way in which he affirmed the deep longing with the past, present and future. May we honour him by living our own individual lives as authentically as he lived his.
* I have often turned to his writing and recordings for solace and guidance through some difficult times in the last few years and had hoped to go on retreat with him in Connamara this May.
* When I heard the news of O'Donohue's death, I cried. His books, especially "Anam Cara" and "Eternal Echoes," were personal favorites. His knowledge of Gaelic and rural Ireland, combined with his philosophical training, gave his writings a special beauty. His poetic perception and spiritual wisdom made his writings a wonder of insightfulness.
* John O'Donohue's brilliant and beautiful wordcraft has touched my heart and helped bring about great peace and growth in my life over the last decade. May his legacy of beauty and courage reach far into the future and bless many generations to come.
* He brings, and will continue to spread through his writings, a timely, universally spiritual message of interconnectedness and common humanity to a troubled world.
* His Anam Cara Celtic Wisdom returned me to that world within that opens us to the universe.

John O'Donohue's beautiful voice brings alive the poetry of his words to open, soften, delight, inspire listeners to a deeper sence of the Mystery, God which is all around us expressed in everyday life through the infinate sources of Beauty. His book is equally wonderful, hearing his Irish voice is like adding music.

The very sad news is that there will be no more books by John O'Donohue because of his untimely death in January. The blessing is that we have a treasury of wisdom and elegance in his published writings and various recordings. We can still listen to his Irish lilt and laugh at his humor; we can still read his prose and poetry suffused with wisdom and caring. Beauty is a book which reminds us how we should look at the world around us, expectantly looking for signs of beauty to counter the other signs of neglect, pain, violence, dis-harmony. He takes us beneath the surface, urging us to troll the depths of our souls to find our beauty. Every sentence will call you to ponder more deeply and invite you to look anew at life.

Used this book as a filler to get free shipping. I'm not sure why the the product details the book is indicated as having 256 pages. It has about 30 . It is essentially what should be a free handout. It is also very dated seeming like it was written in the 50's. Just read a couple of the reviews and you have all the information contained withing the book.

This little book can travel with you as a reminder of how to keep the right frame of mind regarding what you want in life and specifically how to get it.
Three steps are provided:
1.) write it down exactly as you desire. One of my favorite books on that is Write It Down, Make It Happen: Knowing What You Want And Getting It In it,stories are told of people who wrote down what they desired and now are examples of people prospering while living their dreams like Suze Orman, Jim Carey and others.
2.) Think about your desire as though it's already a reality. Creative Visualization: Use the Power of Your Imagination to Create What You Want in Your Life (Gawain, Shakti), Law of Attraction: The Science of Attracting More of What You Want and Less of What You Don't and The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham Law of Attraction, and Joe Vitale's The Attractor Factor: 5 Easy Steps for Creating Wealth (or Anything Else) from the Inside Out all encourage the same. The book New Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz tells how coaches encouraged their athletes in the Olympics to see themselves performing their feat in state of perfection based upon the idea that your mind does not know the difference between a real and vividly imagined experience.
3.) Don't talk about what you want to anyone.Talking disperses the energy of that which you want and shows a lack of faith that it is already on it's way to you.
It Works is simply a reminder of what all the other books have said in more length. Get it and give it to others to remind them and we can re-read it to remind ourselves that LIFE WORKS if we apply the spiritual laws that govern the UNIVERSE. Enjoy!
Blessings,
Joan Maresh Hansen

Working since 1926!

Review Date: 2008-04-19
The Little Book, as we call it, has been passed down in our family since its publication by DeVorss in 1926. The edition you can get here at Amazon looks like the original. Yes, it's quaint, and the language is of another time. My mom's sister gave her a copy, and my mom gave me a photo copy of her book, sans cover, when I went to college. (Because we couldn't find the cover, we couldn't find the book publisher.) In the early days of Amazon I found the original publication and I've been buying them by the tens ever since. (If you're a few bucks short of the free shipping purchase amount, just throw a few of these onto your order!) I've given nearly everyone I know a copy. We occasionally share our "list" stories, and everyone who's bothered to make a list has some excellent stories. Most of us made our lists, stashed them away, and several years later found the lists and discovered that most of the items on the list had come true! (I still haven't piloted the Goodyear Blimp, but I did go to film school, ride my bike across country, and buy a sailboat.)

Going back to the basics laid out in this little book is a good antidote to the expensive, expansive, process-oriented, trick-filled self help books that have surfaced lately in the wake of The Secret. I have been enjoying all these new books myself, but my little three dollar booklet is still my favorite. It's pocket-sized and thin and I have one in my day planner. It's a fast read and easy to do, and it does work. Reading it takes fifteen minutes, tops. Make your list on whatever is handy, with a bowling alley pencil, and take about ten minutes. There. Your life is better already.

One thing that most people either forget or have trouble with is that embryonic ideas need to be kept hidden. When you make your list, do as my nephew did while writing his on a paper napkin at a restaurant - cover it up with your hand as you write, chortling about your fabulous future. Don't worry. You can tell what you wrote down later, when you tell your "list story" too.

Your reading this because the teacher has presented himself to you. You asked and the next step is up to you. I have found that the idea has come to my mind and then the information is presented to me. This is confirmation of it's truth and the next step in my learning. As I advance my ideas change and become more refined. We are evolving physicaly and mentally but the choice is yours. Open your mind up to the possibilities and see what can happen.

I listen to this CD at least once a week, especially when old issues come up. It's always astounding to me how the media and even friends and family can perpetuate the Fear Factor, but like Louise would probably say, When an issue arises, it's there to be released. Thought is power and we can create a safe place in the world by changing our thoughts (which then change our actions). We can create our world. We are safe, secure and protected by love at all times. I am 20 years old now and I still remember when I got this book and read it for the first time. It made science so cool and was a great way to show kids how science can be cool. I actually just found this book in a big stack and decided to look it up on Amazon. GREAT to hear they still sell it. I recommend this book to every kid!

Loved this book as a child.

Like another reviewer, I recently found this on my shelf and was curious to see whether it was in print. I'm 22 now and must've been around 8 when I got it.

I'm in University now, studying software engineering, and I have to say that this book really spurred my interest in science. It comes with so many cool things, a magnet, agar, diffraction grating, and a fresnel lens.

Highly recommend this to parents, aunts, and uncles looking for an awesome gift for a youngster in the family. The kid won't be disappointed once they get into it after expecting an action figure or video game.

I have a feeling that most of you contemplating buying this book are replacing an ancient or lost copy of it and know exactly what you're getting, in which case you won't be disappointed. Over the years the title has become somewhat misleading and should now read, "How to Draw Comic the way Marvel did it from the late 70s to the late 80s using the tools available at that time" or perhaps more marketably: "How to Draw Marvel-style Retro Comics."

Stylistically, I wish this book would recirculate around the Marvel offices to remind creators what their comics are supposed to be like. It is far from cutting edge or eye opening, however. At the time of its publication I think it was extremely innovative and captured an innovative style. But styles have life cycles...

Having said all that, I love this book, although I suspect that a big part of that is because of my nostalgic feelings for it.

This is sort of a classical text, focused on covering the various aspects of drawing comics.

Though drawing comics involves a lot about learning to draw, I would think that an ability to draw whether inherent or acquired would be a necessary starting point to effectively use this book. On the contrary one might as well get started here and then hone the necessary drawing skills.

As in any specific form of art, such as Illustration, Fine art, Animation art, Commercial art etc, Comics art has its own set of skills that need to be honed.

This is a book written by Stan lee and John Buscema, one a great story teller and the other a fine artist. It does cover several aspects of the trade.

As the title suggests the genre is more towards the 'Action' side, as opposed to a style such as Disney, Asterix or that of Herge's Tintin.

A significant amount of the book focuses on the figure and its action, which is so vital to this type of comics, and these are real gems. The quick setup of a pose, the dynamism needed for convincing action, the looseness of the approach, and then the focus on the form, the details of the figure the head and so on are very effectively presented.

the other important ingredients of composition, perspective, foreshortening are covered in detail.

There are of course couple chapters that deal with comic book covers, and the all important comics inking.

Though obviously this was written in a pre-digital period, all the information can be readily applied to today's all-digital comics creation.

Coming from successful practicing veterans, the entire book is packed with practical information.

It's old, but the concepts are timeless

I bought this for my 11 year old son for his birthday. He's been trying to draw superheroes lately. When I began flipping through it, I recognized many of the images. I then remembered I had this book when I was a boy. I checked the original publish date and found it to be 1978. Yep, this was it. It's a very good book for those who need some structure with regards to their pencil drawing. The concepts of human form, perspective, dimension etc. are easy to understand with many, many examples. Step by step instructions make it easy. Even those with limited artistic abilities will be able to draw well using this book. I recommend it highly!

Some of you folks writing reviews are, like me, graphic designers. And, yes, I too have owned this wonderful book. I even laughed at the publication date at the top of the page because mine is from 1978!

Lee and Buscema are two of the foundation blocks of Marvel Comics and I wouldn't expect anything less from this wonderful work. If you are a beginning or almost intermediate comic book artist, I can't think of a better place to start than this book. I still refer to it, sometimes, for reference tips.

I won't bore you with a diatribe of what can be learned here... just buy the book. I think you'll be surprised that, in 30 years, you'll still own your dog-eared, yellowed, frayed-out copy. I've still got mine.

Oh, and when you're done with it, do yourself a favor and take a look at some Burne Hogarth books.

Enjoy!

How to draw comics the Marvel way is good but old!

How to draw comics the Marvel Way is a good book but it's very old information. I think that Marvel comics and the comic book industry has changed since this book was published in 1978 and 1984. Don't get me wrong! I like this How to draw comics the Marvel Way! book written by Stan Lee with artwork by John Buseama, but the books information is too old. I think comic book artists today use better materials besides paint brushes and india ink. You buy Markers with india ink in them at an artsupply store. there are other things in this book that do not appy to comic books in 2008 as well. If your a begining artist, I will recommend this book but It's not for advance artist. B+
