With out doubt one of the really inspired writings ever penned!
Og Mandino led a remarkable career after a rocky start, he writes
in a way that every generation and every level of reader can gain something from.It gives the reader a clearly defined set of principles to live by, the scrolls help to establish new habits and can forever be there for a guiding set of reference points throughout your life.I have studied many of his books and read from this for over 25 years. Thanks to my friend Dave Blanchard, President of the OG Group
I continue to learn from the scrolls that Og so beautifully provides. This book was a tremendous motivation for me to re-write my 1st book that spurred my career immensely, Lessons From Great Lives, learn to be rich in all areas of your life. I love the study of great lives and Og would be one of those indeed to learn from.It has served as a treasure for millions for more than 30 years.I couldn't recommend a book with any more passion.

I'm starting the program on Monday as advised in the book, it's exciting.

This is an intense Og Mandino book as someone said, "no punches pulled"

His other books like the greatest miracle, the gift, the 12th angel, mission:success, are all much more light hearted.

I think it may be beneficial for new Og readers to read those first to truly understand what a sweet, special man Og Mandino is. The intensity of this book is absolutley awesome for success seekers, but I would not want to turn anyone off the other heart touching stories Og has written.

He was an amazing writer and a super sweet man...and I have a plan one day to distribute "The Greatest Miracle in the World Books" to everyone I meet who is in any form of despair or encountering any challenge. It was an answer to my prayers when I read it.

So I would recommend this book to serious success seekers, just for the list at the end of his favorite off the wall success books if nothing else. And I would definatley recommend any other Og book to anybody at all, their beautiful writing.

I read this book everyday and have probably read the entire thing about 20 plus times.

Not only has it transformed the way I look at the world and myself, but it has given me a new appreciation for how amazing life can be if you are courageous enough to work on your bad habits (the main tenant of the book) and to improve your good habits.

This should not be quickly glimpsed at and tossed aside as something rudimentary and simple, but it should be taken very seriously because it can teach you lifelong lessons about values and visions that will make you a person who everyone will want to be around.

Simple...yes, profound and life-alterning...a definite yes.

I use this every morning along with another book by Joyce Meyers called "The Secret Of Speaking God's Word". It is amazing that no matter what day it is the message always seems to speak to something going on in my life during that time. It allows me to better identify certain area(s) I want to focus my prayer and meditation on. Joyce Meyers book give specific scriptures outlined by subject, "Fear, Anxeity, Depression, Hope, etc. . ."

I have purchased at least 6 copies of this book in the past three months because I have friends I knew would benefit and enjoy them as I do.

I bought all 3 books and CD's of Sara for my 4-year old daughter. Sometimes I am not sure who loves them more... :-)
We listen to it together while driving places and sometimes she just puts on her Headphones and listens alone. We also read 1-2 chapters a night and she loves the stories!!!
Although she is just 4, she is getting it- always says "remember what Sara says?" and then she quotes Sara for a specific situation.
Amazing...I wish I'd hd this when I was growing up- life would have been less of a surprise!

That is exactly what I wanted and precisely what I received! This set of CD's are a constant companion in my car. I listen to them daily. The point is to so embed the theories into our daily lives that they become second nature - and we come to the realization that most of life doesn't just *happen* to us, we have some say in what we create in our lives. While I am very much a Christian, I extract the working principles from this teaching and discard what is not in keeping with my beliefs. Work the *principles*. The main thing that audiobook teaches is what Jesus said: "If you can believe, ALL things are possible"

Most of the daily meditations can be directly linked to the Bible, and I would have hoped that there would have been Bible references beneath his meditations. Anyone can give "good" advice, but when one sees the advice hailing from the Bible, it gives the advice a lot more credibility and power, in my humble opinion. It is important to be positive, but more importantly, to know why. I have taken to writing in his book the Bible verses that I believe correspond to his meditation, what a wonderful way to start the day!

Great Ideas to Meditate On

Review Date: 2007-06-10
Thousands of studies have shown how much stress affects your emotions and health - and how reducing stress can have an incredibly powerful effect on your daily life. The mindset you set up for yourself each day can literally make you more healthy - and keep you that way.

This is where Norman Vincent Peale's book comes in. Every day it provides something for you to consider, a blurb to think about. You don't have to read the book straight through. In fact, it works better if you don't. Just keep it on your desk. Pick it up every day or so and see what it says. Think about the words. If you come across a favorite saying, post that up by your computer monitor. Each of us will find different pages which speak to us personally - which is why it's great that there are 365 of them!

For example, here's one. "For the next twenty-four hours, deliberately speak hopefully about everything, about your job, about your children's marks in school, about your health, and about your future." Isn't that an amazing thought - that it might be a challenge to be hopeful, just for 24 hours? If you were actively hopeful, what kind of beneficial ripple effects might that have on others around you? It could literally make your entire environment incrementally better.

It is tempting to want this information in calendar form, one of those page-a-day to go through. On the other hand, with that system you'd have to buy a new one each year. With this book, you can just move a bookmark through it each day, and you don't have to buy another book when the year is up.

If I have a complaint, it's that the book doesn't say it's Christian up front - but there are a fair number of God references in it. I don't mind books that promote Christianity, but they should let you know they're going to do that, rather than just having it pop up once you've already bought it.

Being that I'm often busy, I find this book refreshing, heartfelt and reassuring.

One thing that I love about Deepak's books are that he really tries to get us to get in touch with our spirit and our true inner self. I see this book as a reference to remind us about what our purpose in life really is.

Beautifully written. I highly recommend Deepak's books as a present to a family or a close friend, or just about anyone who's had it rough and needs encouragement. I truly appreciate his writing and hope everyone else will too.. Thanks Deepak!

"Through synchrodestiny, you can finally become the person the universe intended you to be--as powerful as desire, as creative as spirit. All it takes is an eagerness to join the cosmic dance, and a willingness to seek the miracles of the soul." ~ Deepak Chopra from "The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire"

In this fantastic, wisdom-packed, yet quick-read of a book, Deepak talks about a state in which we live our lives with "an appreciation of coincidences and their meanings," where we are connected with "the underlying field of infinite possibilities."

He calls this state "synchrodestiny." It's a state "in which it becomes possible to achieve the spontaneous fulfillment of every desire."

I like the sound of that! :)

The book walks us through, in the inspiring and wise style that Deepak has mastered, the ideas we need to embody in order to consistently live connected to source and allow ourselves to experience the magic of synchrodestiny.

If you're like me, I have no doubt "The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire" would be a wonderful addition to your collection.

I carry this book with me as often as I can (when I'm not hauling around books for class) and reference it often. Working toward a degree in Ecopsychology, I am certain that this book will be the main reference book for the work I will be doing with clients. Bill Plotkin clarifies the importance of rites of passage journeys, journeying into the shadow or dark side to fully realize your personal calling and the light that lives within you. This is an amazing book, very well written and is already a beloved classic for me.

Insightful and Honest

Last year I met, quite out of the blue, a gifted shamanic practitioner in my own locale who has taken me under her wing (and has not requested a single penny from me for doing so). This was a catalyst event which has prompted my own "second cocooning," a concept explained in "Soulcraft" that I now understand. So much about this book has provided me vital context for understanding my current stage of life and showed me the next couple of steps that I need to take from here.

Some might be tempted to dismiss Soulcraft as "fluffy New Age tripe," but I hope you won't make that mistake. Plotkin doesn't blow sweetness and light up anyone's butt. The journey to soul is not an easy one, and no one--no teacher, no seer, no guru--can make the journey for you. This book encourages you to do the *necessary and difficult* work of finding your own soul, your own vision, your own task--it's important not only for you, but for the way we all live on this earth. Not only that, this book gives you some real-world strategies and activities for how to actually do that.

I am reminded of Jesus saying in the gospels, "what does it profit a man to gain the world but lose his soul?" This book provides some context for understanding what's happening as you lose the world in order to gain your soul. While we ultimately make this inward and downward journey alone, on another level we're not really alone--others have gone before us (and some examples are given in the book), and the presence of Spirit is in all and around all.

My thanks are given gratefully to Bill Plotkin for birthing this book into the world.

One thing, though: I appreciated Plotkin's brief statement in the book that we should not be appropriating culturally from native peoples--but then he quoted Harley Swift Deer in the book, someone who is reputedly/reportedly a "plastic shaman." That was a disappointment, but overall the book is still worth five stars.

I read this book as part of a course in personality. This book gives you the definitions and differences between spirit and soul, and how a journey to know the soul can be a road less travelled. It is an amazing insight into the state of coming to know one's soul and the difficult road that must be taken to get there. The author also gives many examples of his participants vision quests and how they can relate to psychological issues in one's life. This book should be read by all humans. We have all lost our connection with nature and through this book we might be able to regain that relationship

THE Transcendent "Self-Help" Book-and a Sequel Available Now Too!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-22
The inhabitants of our alienated modern society--and those suffering globally from its negative influences--are desperate for meaning. Self-Help books abound beyond belief. People of all ages, especially in the workplace and corporate world, live lives of such "quiet desperation," as Thoreau wrote, that they can barely discern even the surface they're skating on, much less the depths that lay beneath. Young people worldwide fall into depression, crime, or the false promise of fundamentalism and fanaticism, sacrificing themselves for--what? Surely not our shared humanity.

Bill Plotkin's SOULCRAFT is, I believe, at last, the "definitive" self-help guide, one so profound that it has the capacity, for those open to it, to help reshape our entire vision of the world--and restore to ourselves a fulfilling home within it.

I write this as a cultural anthropologist, author and lecturer who has himself sorted his way through any number of methods to a more balanced, centered life. Plotkin draws from traditional and Jungian psychology, the deep wisdom of the natural world (one of the richest sources of meaning which we have almost succeeded in destroying), and from a wealth of knowledge about traditional cultural practices the world over that provide ancient keys to holistic living. Plotkin draws out the essence of all this and spins it into a welcoming web, each strand another guiding rope hung with tools to empower one on a perilous and promising journey to center.

Make no mistake--this book is not psycho-babble and or self-help pablum. It is not an instant solution; it is a challenging way to open yourself up to an ever-widening world through which, with courage and commitment, you will continue to journey the rest of your life.

There may be some who think the notion of "soul-crafting" is uncomfortably "New Age" (I feared so at first). If so then this is a work that synthesizes everything good and wise that emerged from the wild and ecstatic upheavals of the late `60s, filtered over decades through Plotkin's formal social-psychological training, shaped by his rigorous, wide-ranging scholarship, and brought finally to fruition through the power of his personal experience and heartfelt vision.

And now his newest book has appeared: "Nature and the Human Soul: Cultivating Wholeness and Community in a Fragmented World." I just ordered mine from Amazon and got it immediately. After what Plotkin has just given me in the earlier book, I can only imagine what this book, described as a culminating life's work, can offer me. I can't wait to read it. --Jud Newborn, Ph.D., author, "Sophie Scholl and the White Rose."

It is like listening to a bhuddist monk that has had way too much to drink. There is no logic in the progression, interjections and points seem tangential. The stories he uses as analogy are pointless, far-fetched, and nonsensical. I kept returning to the book in the hopes that it would start making sense, or even become readable, and I made a concerted effort to 'stay with it', but eventually just tossed it into the Goodwill pile, saying 'enough is enough'.

Simply Brilliant

I have read hundreds if books in a similar vein over the past few decades, thought I'd heard it all...but Guy Finley has truly surprised this jaded New Yorker with his simple yet to-the-point ways of expressing these not-so-simple truths. Love his stories, his analogies, his metaphors, so much so that I have ordered all his other books for myself and friends. What a treat, just when you think there is nothing new under the sun on this topic, Voila, it appears...why didn't I find him sooner? I would have saved lots of money on other books to say nothing of my aging eyesight!

There are only a few books that I buy anymore because of personal budget cuts and moving close to a GREAT library. I finally decided to buy this book because every time I went to the library I would check and see if it was on the shelves (and check the book out if it was). This little book has done more to free up the writer in me than anything I ever could have done on my own. I feel like this book has helped me to unlearn a lot of those cold, sterile writing techniques I learned back in high school. Now I am writing with a personality!

Julia Cameron's book is a valuable tool for anyone interested in exploring their creative potential. Her philosophies reach well past writing into expanding the real and imagined boundaries of life's routines.

"Each day, each life, is a series of choices, and as we use the lens of writing to view our lives, we see our choices."
(Julia Cameron "The Right to Write")

"The Right to Write" is briskly organized, with plenty of practical exercises designed to get thwarted creatives (Julia would argue that would include EVERYONE at some point sometime) to demystify writing, and the hyperbolic, foreboding mythology surrounding a writing life.

I was fortunate to attend one of Ms. Cameron's workshops in New York City. Her sincere desire to help writers "metabolize" experience into words on the page exemplifies her own hard-won "learned faith."
Thank you Julia.

I haven't been able to get into Julia's other books. I often feel very uncreative when I try to work through them. But I like this book as it seems to be telling me just what I need to hear right now. The chapter on Bad Writing and The Time Lie were especially helpful in getting me going. I like that the chapters are short and when I'm done I feel like writing. I don't do the activities in the book and instead go straight to the projects I'm working on.

Another good resource with similar tips and inspiration is Heather Seller's books Page by Page and Chapter by Chapter.

Julia Cameron believes that everyone is a writer. Her purpose in writing this book, therefore, is to free the writer she believes is in you. I disagree with her assumption. We are not all writers any more than we are all dentists or mathematicians. As a writer and a psychologist myself, this is an important distinction to make because this book eminently describes many of the facets of the writer's personality.

In my experience there are people who think they would like to be writers, but always have some reason why they are not; and there are others who write because they need to do it for themselves. There is something inside of them that they have to get out, and it is best expressed through writing. I believe that this is why several reviewers have felt that this book could not help them. They weren't really writers at all.

If you have the personality of a writer, then this book will tell you a great deal about yourself - your feelings, your struggles, and your thoughts. It will explain the artistic temperament to you and help you to understand your own behaviors and fears. But, if you are not an artist in general, and a writer in particular, then this book is probably not for you.

Indulge yourself

Julia Cameron's work is always engaging and this book is no exception. `The Right to Write' is written with beauty and eloquence and would make the perfect companion for any would be writer who struggles with making a start or trusting in their own abilities to bring their work to completion.

With many years as a published writer, Julia's experience and candour gives the reader insights into her own writing life that are inspiring and profound. She takes the budding writer by the hand, and through carefully selected exercises, guides her to overcome resistance and start producing results. Julia turns the experience into something to be cherished, not feared, and the results can be extremely gratifying. If you are in love with the idea of writing and desire to deepen your relationship even more, then this book is for you. Indulge yourself!
