I ordered one of these books for each one of adult kids, neither of which is what would be called 'religious', but both of which appreciate this book. It quotes verses from the King James Version translation. There's quite a bit from the book of Proverbs. Everyone has things they have to deal with and work through in this live; and this is a nice, uplifting little book that could help.
I'm in agreement with some of the other reviewers that it would be good to drag out your Bible and read the verses in context. Merely picking out a verse or two from the Bible and basing your entire belief system on those really isn't going to cut it.

I bought this on a recommendation and have used the cards to inspire my entire family to be more artistic. We have used some of the suggestions - such as the saran wrap models - and done them as family projects. It has really been a great experience for the kids and I. Highly recommend this product.

I bought this book about six months ago and I still find myself going back to it for inspiration. It is not a step by step "how to" book for people who want to walk away with a specific finished product...It is meant to give the reader a starting place, a catalyst for your own creative process. I am not sure what the previous reviewer was expecting from this book...it was obviously not her style, but this book is never "whiny" or "sappy" and what constitutes a great artist is obviously subjective...As artists and human beings, I think we are all "teetering on an edge" from time to time, and that is why I have an art journal. It is a safe place to explore things that are going on in my life. I am a huge fan of Randi's work and her style is very honest and raw. As an avid art journaler and a collector of many mixed media art books, this is one that has me going back to it again and again. That is the sign of a great book.

This is a great set of inspirational items. I love the stories that come on the cards and the journal is beautiful and inspirational too. Many fun and interesting ideas that I can't wait to try. This set was purchased for our 11-year-old son to use for art projects with homeschooling. I think the cards and journal will provide great starting points for him to do projects with.

Thanks, Randi!!

If what you want is a guide to walk you, step-by-step, through the process of creating an art journal, something which will provide you with in-depth instruction on specific media techniques, this is not going to be your best choice...but if what you're after is something to kick-start you creatively, you may find "Wide Open" exactly wht you've been looking for.

Maybe this is for you, maybe not!

As a mixed media artist, I was curious as to what else could possibly be written or shown about journaling that hasn't already been published. I found the box on the shelf of a Half Price store so I bought it at the bargain price. If anything, I thought the packaging was well designed and I could alter the box myself and use it for my own deck. The enclosed journal is a handy compact booklet that can be used to hold notes and ideas as well. As far as the cards, themselves, some ideas are better than others depending on where you are starting from and if you want to be "edgy". I'm open to all kind of things but I'm not into using my body as a journaling tool ~ something about wrapping yourself in plastic wrap and packing tape. She mentions that journaling is best done in a book instead of loose pages and yet all the cards are reprints of her journal pages and they come as "loose pages". Her words exactly: "Loose pages can be shuffled, tossed, crumbled...it's hard for them to represent some thing substantial." Most of this stuff could have been written about and shared if the artist chose to blog about it but then again there's no profit to be made from that. I don't want to sound totally negative because I am totally in favor of self expression and journaling. So if it gets people to start something and move on with it, fine. Me, I've been journaling all along and nothing in this book will change what I already do. The best book anyone one of us can find about Art Journaling is the one we create ourselves.

My sister and I love the "Get Fuzzy" cartoon. Each year I buy a calendar for my sister and myself. I can't wait until the start of each new month to see what cartoon comes up. The cartoons are great and there is plenty of space in each day block to write upcoming appointments or notes to myself of things I need to do. Mine is in the kitchen and I look at it as I grab my first cup of coffee. It's a great way to start the day...with a laugh.

When I first picked up the book I figured that I would thumb through it, read the sections that appealed to me, and forget the rest. I started at the beginning and read it all the way through. The stories were captivating and the ingredient information was especially helpful. The premise of the book is new and refreshing. This book made me feel more optimistic and motivated about myself and my direction in life. It is wonderful to acknowledge how we are all beautiful in our own way.

In a field so top-heavy with wannabe gurus, spiritual advisors, people who 'know' what others ought to do with their spiritual lives and precisely how they should do it, Raymon Grace is a breath of fresh air.

He's an humble, unassuming man who knows his role and does his best to pass on his quiet wisdom without spamming, chest pounding proclamations and pronouncements, New Age evangelism.

I recommend Raymon, his books, his approach to metaphysics, his work of any kind to readers, wonderers, wanderers, and all others who don't believe they yet know everything there is to learn about the workings of the self, the Universe, the position of humanity in the overall scheme of things.

We could all learn much from Raymon Grace, and we'd all be doing ourselves a great favor by doing so.

Just Do It!

Review Date: 2008-01-06
The purpose of this book is to encourage you to use your mind power essentially by intending the outcome you desire to experience. The style of the book is conversational, dynamic, open ended, which makes it particularly refreshing. You are encouraged to experiment and explore.
The author provides numerous examples from his experience and from experiences of other people of using the power of intent for healing, changing financial situation, removing obstacles and transforming the energy whether in people, places or situations, increasing energy, and much more.

I have been likewise using and experimenting with mind power all my life, and some of techniques I used are similar to the author's, some are different, but I have totally enjoyed reading this book because in the author's desire to experiment with just about anything, I feel I have found a kindred spirit. The only way to learn, to develop proficiency in using mind power, regardless of the tools and techniques used, is by doing it - by doing something and discovering what happens. The author repeats it over and over throughout the book and I totally agree with it.

At the end of the book, the author has added - in the Appendix - Dick Sutphen's talk "The Battle for Your Mind" which revolves around different brainwashing techniques. The talk starts well delineating the elements of brainwashing as used by different organizations and institutions and then it goes into describing few techniques related to persuasion and influence (there are many, many more) and the article with this talk begins to sound paranoid because the moment you dare to relax your mind, someone will mess up with it. He mentions in one breath that the spiritual purpose of a human being is finding True Self, but at the same time sounds terrified of the idea of stilling the mind so that this True Self can emerge into his conscious awareness. Until he is willing to still his mind, he will be forever seeking and never finding, because the True Self is experienced beyond the thoughts, beyond the mind. What Dick Sutphen didn't seem to realize at the time he made that talk is that we are always influencing each other with our thoughts, words and behavior and that the way of choosing your life and exercising your freedom begins with choosing your thoughts and living consciously. Unless you choose your thoughts for yourself, someone else will do it for you.

There is a little bit more to miracles than merely intending them - and that is an awareness that we are immersed in an ocean of intelligent energy, of Spirit, or whatever you like to call it, and not only immersed by also made out of and that everything else is made out of this intelligent energy - and when we use intent we are consciously working with this intelligent energy. The greater awareness you have of this ocean of boundless energy and the greater friendship, the more intimate relationship you have with it by communing with it daily, the more you can do with it.

"Life is a creative experience," begins author Kent Nerburn in his slim little volume of basic truths on which to build a life of value for oneself and others. They are, as the title states, basic and simple truths, but it is these simple truths that have been lost in the muddle and busyness and confusion of modern life marked by an embarrassment at claiming a value system. Nerburn continues in explanation of why we must reconnect to these simple truths: "We are shaping ourselves at every moment by every decision we make."

And so we are. A moment taken to consider carefully the meanings and values of topics Nerburn has chosen here are moments well spent. To ponder these truths and to absorb them clears the path ahead and moves us forward with peace and conviction.

Short chapters illustrate in clean prose the values of education and learning ("without knowledge I could not play the violin. Without wisdom, I could not play the music"); work ("we are what we do, and the more we do it, the more we become it"); money ("be a giver and a sharer... in some unexpected and unforeseeable fashion, all else will take care of itself"); possessions ("possessions are as likely to make you unhappy as they are to make you happy, because they define the limits of your life and keep you from the freedom of choice that comes with traveling light"); giving ("you have the power to create joy and happiness by your simplest gestures of caring and compassion"); travel ("if we don't offer ourselves to the unknown, our senses dull. Our world becomes small and we lose our sense of wonder"); loneliness and solitude (the first is a void, the second a sense of self-fulfillment); love ("treat what love brings you with kindness"); marriage ("if you believe in your heart that you have found someone with whom you are able to grow, if you have sufficient faith that you can resist the endless attraction of the road not taken and the partner not chosen, if you have the strength to embrace the cycles and seasons that your love will experience..."); parenthood ("in the bondage to a child you will find a freedom you never imagined, but neither should you seek parenthood as a way to fill an emptiness in your life. A child will hold a mirror to your life..."); strength ("true strength does not require an adversary and does not see itself as noble or heroic. It simply does what it must without praise or need of recognition... strength based in love is strength people crave"); tragedy and suffering ("they are the fire that burns you pure"); the spiritual journey ("spiritual understanding never becomes deep unless you subject yourself to the spiritual discipline of practicing your belief"); elders ("they were you and you will be them"); death ("it brings us to a judgment, so it is ours to control by the kind of life we live"); and concludes with an epilogue on embracing the mystery.

"If we have played our part well - offering love where it was needed, strength and caring where it was lacking; if we have tended the earth and its creatures with a sense of humble stewardship - we will have done enough."

Simple, yes, and shining with a timeless truth.

Not often among writers do you discover anything of these valued SIMPLE TRUTHS, "In honored memory of one's Father!" My first reading came from my good-reader Friend's excerpt of Kent's neat Chapter entitled, "The Spiritual Journey."

Kent's thoroughly organized headings, uniquely begin in Learning and Education, On Work, On Money, On Possessions, On Giving, On Travel, On Loneliness & Solitude, On Love/Marriage, Parenthood, with short but potent chapters, On Strength, On Tragedy and next Suffering! I am enamored with his depth of understanding of that spiritual "tradition that seems to give voice to the music of your Spirit...(to often being) afraid to follow!"

After this shortest of his diamond-emerald Jewels, all coming from four unique perspectives, I am more than ever an admiror! After three reviews I am finally into the midst of NEITHER WOLF Nor DOG. It promises to be his education and first-hand report of dealing with his own people, in the person of his Elder, Dan asking for help in writing a book of Native American Wisdom! How to have a relationship with your most important partner!
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-20
This is a simple, well written book that explores "Being the Person You Want to Find" rather than finding a specific person to fill your holes. In other words, it's primarily about your relationship with the most important life partner you will ever have... YOURSELF.

If you think about it, you are your only 100% GUARANTEED life partner. This book is about looking at your beliefs, behavioral patterns and conditioning in a curious, gentle and open way toward the goal of having a comfortable relationship with yourself. The unspoken corallary to this might be and thereby... avoid projecting your stuff on to others and get involved with the wrong people unconsciously.

This book is indirectly about relationships because by being the person we want to find, we are most likely to attract healthy people who will treat us as we treat ourselves. This book also helps us to look at our conditioning as a whole, which serves our relationship goals by making our unconscious conditioning more conscious.

I have read a number of Cheri Huber's books and have found them to be easy to read, very practical and entertaining. She does not overwhelm the reader with detail, but she provides a lot of useful and practical tools for those brave enough to do deep inquiry. She focuses more on lived experience in the moment than in-depth discussion of theory.

All of Cheri Huber's books emphasize the importance of being compassionate with yourself, looking inward and accepting whatever the present moment brings. I would say that she emphasizes that HOW you do something is at least as important as WHAT you are doing. She also stresses the importance of a daily meditation practice in most of her books, without being preachy about it. This is good advice for most of us in the West where many of us don't slow down enough to look inward.

I'm really glad to see that Cheri Huber made it as an author. I saw her speak in person and found her to be a very warm, sensitive and caring human being. I also felt she was underrated as an author at the time, but since then she has become quite popular. I often recommend her books to people because they have such broad appeal and written from a deep place of compassion and love.

More than a relationship book

Very insightful and also very short -- which makes it easy to review and refresh your memory and adjust your habits. While it is useful at improving relationships, its usefulness goes far beyond that. It helps guide a readers in adjusting their lives life to be more in accordance with who they "really" are; that is, it helps people disarm their various fears, anxieties, or defense mechanisms and live more authentically and rewardingly.

In an Amazon review of "Get out of Your Mind & into Your Life," I suggested Huber's book as a companion. I guess I should also do the reverse and recommend that book as a companion to this book.

I also recommend Lorne Ladner's "The Lost Art of Compassion," which blends Western and Buddhist psychology in very insightful ways.

I have found these three books personally very useful.
