INSPIRING & THOUGHT-PROVOKING!

Shirley Maclaine's willingness to risk ridicule with her candor is to be commended. She powerfully states what many people fear to speak of. This book inspired me and in fact, if the title had not been taken, may very well have been the title for "Blessings In The Mire." Because she is such a celebrity figure, Maclaine risked more than an average joe. By expressing her beliefs, she opened herself up to the skeptics, the critics, the hecklers. If for nothing else, Ms. Maclaine should be commended for her candor and bavery, but with this statement aside, the book stands on its own for being extremely thought provoking, for creating dialog between believers and skeptics, and for being an extremely well written volume. KUDOS to to Shirley Maclaine for her skill and talent as a proficient author. She is NOT "just another pretty face."

Shirley supplies her fans with the usual information one expects to find in a Hollywood tell-it-all book and so much more. Now you'll find out not only who's slept with whom but who they slept with in previous incarnations!
Yes is was Shirley MacLaine, well-known Hollywood actress, dancer and last surviving member of the infamous "Rat-Pack" who almost single-handedly brought "New Age Spirituality" into the American mainstream with her '83 autobiographical best-seller `Out on a Limb'. This easy to read and highly entertaining 380 page book is a veritable everything you ever wanted to know about the New Age compendium that brought the concept of channeling and reincarnation into mainstream consciousness in unprecedented fashion.
Shirley's revolutionary book came along when the time was ripe for an alternative approach to the divine. A large portion of the population had given up on the Sunday go to church ritual to hear about how the experience of God had touched the lives of people in the remote past. They hungered for something more recent, more accessible and most of all more experiential. Ms. MacLaine provided just that, a contemporary spiritual quest encompassing a myriad of belief systems and personal encounters with living, illumined teachers dispensing wisdom. All this blended with numerous, always eerie and invigorating synchronistic occurrences (meaningful coincidence) that so enthrall us made `Out on a Limb' a sure hit with the public-at-large.
Unthinkable as it may seem, her simplistic, naïve understanding of spirituality has now become the norm for many, especially within the Hollywood elite and has caused a paradigm shift in modern day society that is still evolving. I'm not sure whether the positive brought about by this new mindset outweighs the negative backwash of spurious information and shallow thinking brought about by this book, but it is change nonetheless.
Whether you agree with Shirley or not is not the point. She stands alone as an agent of change, new age guru, spiritual guide, cultural phenomenon and a sociological event that cannot be denied no matter how many people sit back and laugh at her beliefs. Many years from now long after you and I are gone this book will still be read and recognized as an important milestone in the history of the `New Age' movement. Ah..., the power of Hollywood stardom.

I thought this book was amazing when it first came out, when I was literally a teenager and first starting to think about life and what it all meant. I believe I have re-read this book over the years at least 6 times, and I always get something from it. For some reason this book is like an old friend I go back to again and again. I also loved the movie, love the ideas it presents, the way you watch Shirley struggle - as we all do (I am now 42, and can really relate to where she was at that time) - with relationships, friendships, family, and the search for spirituality and meaning in this life. I thought her love affair with Gerry was touching, how there was such a connection that she couldn't understand for a long time (though I am a little judgmental when it comes to affairs with married men, so I wasn't so comfortable about that part). We've all been drawn toward someone or repelled from someone so strongly and had trouble shaking the feeling, so it was interesting to see that it all may be about far more than what is happening on the surface. The movie was sweet, and sad, and funny, and touching, and really humanized celebrity in a way that brought home that we're all just people struggling to find our way. I've read nearly all of her books, with The Camino being the last. For some reason that was just too "out there" for me. A really good follow-up was It's All in the Playing, documenting Shirley's experience while filming the movie. It also discussed John Heard, "David" in the movie, who is such a tremendous actor. He wasn't much of a believer in the subject matter when approached to do the movie, and it was very interesting to read the behind-the-scenes of it all. So I would recommend this book whole-heartedly. Interesting and thought-provoking, both.

Here is this book in a nutshell: Shirley Maclaine, one-time Hollywood A-lister, finds herself in her early forties (during the mid-1970's) and as many people do upon reaching this hypothetical mid-point in life, Shirley Maclaine feels an inner motivation to seek out answers to humanity's heftiest questions. Does life have meaning? What happens when we die? Has she been on the right path? Is there a God? Is there anything beyond or outside the visible world? While all these are normal, natural, respectable inquiries that anyone with any substance surely makes at some point, the unfortunate fact is Maclaine asked these questions in the time and place she did---California in the '70's---and like the proverbial P.T. Barnum maxim about a you-know-what and his money, this financially-secure starlet soon fell into the clutches of a number of cons and frauds and fake "channelers" who filled her head with non-sense, even as they emptied her bank account. Toss into this retro-New Age tale a trek into the wilds of Peru, some asides about UFO's, an affair with a married British MP (later revealed to be a disguise for Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Palma) a friendship with what was surely an emotionally-scarred young man whose mental issues Maclaine confused with "depth" and you got it all. Maclaine is perhaps to be commended for her courage in presenting her experiences and newfound convictions before the public, and for clinging to her beliefs while being made fun of by those who do not hail the legitimacy of spirit channelers who charge mega-bucks for their services, but what it all comes down to is this: she asked good questions and got (expensive) bad answers in return.

Most of us have always felt that there must be some power behind our prayers for the sick and the ill - now in Dossey's wonderful little book you can affirm that belief. This is a great book to gift someone whio is experiencing health issues or whose loved ones are.
I personally believe in the power of prayers and have written about the healings that have come to me in my life over the many decades. In my book "A Spiritual Warrior's Journey" I have several chapters devoted to that power. It is real! Yet, it is an energy that for some that remains untapped and unused.
This book is a great red but a much better result would be to put his inspirational advice into practice. Thank God for his book! it will heal bodies and save souls!

This is a book that should be on every healer's shelf. There is constantly new information now on this subject, and I was greatly moved with Dr. Snow's new book The Power of Divine: A Healer's Guide and the new information there, but that is to be expected as we move forward in our awareness between the power of prayer and how spirituality affects our bodies, both emotionally and physically. Mankind is taking great, wonderful strides forward right now, and not a moment too soon! Read this book and start a collection that leads you to insight and wisdom.

Larry Dossey has thought deeply about the mind/body relationship, nature of consciousness and the power of prayer. In this book, he highlights evidence for the power of prayer, but in general he backs up his assertions with facts appropriate to the area of inquiry. On the other hand, he is also open to other ways of validating truth claims than the scientific method. For example, it would be difficult to study love or consciousness using a microscope, but I don't think many people would argue that these things exist.
In general, I like all of Larry Dossey's stuff and this is one of his very popular books. It's a relatively short read and not a bad place to start. I also think his books on hearing are very encouraging, enthusiastic and written in the spirit of a true healer. His presence in medicine as a physician is a blessing. I hope many more books will come from his pen, here are a few more you may want to try:
Reinventing Medicine: Beyond Mind-Body to a New Era of Healing, Healing Beyond the Body: Medicine and the Infinite Reach of the Mind and Be Careful What You Pray For...You Just Might Get It.

I, like many people, started praying when I was old enough to talk. I vividly remember my favorite Aunt teaching me the "now I lay me down to sleep" prayer when I was about 3 or 4 - and I said this prayer every night before bed until I was old enough to come up with my own.
Although I prayed every night, I never really thought about whether or not my prayers would be answered - I guess I just assumed they would be. That was until I became an adult, and began to realize that some were not being answered at all. Of course, I realized afterwords that the "unanswered prayer" is sometimes a blessing in and of itself!
This book helps explain why some prayers are answered and others are not, and shows through scientific evidence that there is in fact power in prayer. This is an amazing breakthrough, as we are now facing a time when prayer is being banned in all of our schools - and yet it's being shown that prayer can be an amazingly wonderful & powerful force.
This book also raises some of the issues that may await our physicians now that it has been shown that prayer can in fact help to heal the sick. Will there be malpractice law suites if a dr. chooses not to pray for his/her patients? Will people who don't want to be prayed for sue their doctors who have prayed for their health? These are quite scarey questions!
Also, what about the people who choose prayer INSTEAD of western medicine? Are they really making the right choice? According to Dr. Dossey, the best route to take when faced with medical crises is to use all that is available to us - western medicine, alternative medicine, AND prayer - no one of these is mutually exclusive.
The most important finding though, in my opinion, is that prayer has been found to be equally effective regardless of one's religious beliefs. Although this finding has upset fundamentalists, I think it's a step in the direction of tolerance towards those who espouse beliefs that are different than our own. In this respect, as well as other's, this book has the potential to "change the world"...
I would recommend this book to everyone in the health profession, those suffering ill health, and anyone who is just plain interested in the power of prayer. The scientific evidence is out, and it appears that prayer has an amazing power - why not utilize this power to help yourself and your fellow man?

You could say that Margot has one foot in the area of beaded jewelry and her other foot into mixed-media style crafting. Margot Potter's Impatient Beader books are all about beading fun and reflect her wide variety of interests. A QVC jewelry line spokesperson, her obvious joy in creation extends to her chapter headings: "All Hail the Bead Queen," "Wild Women," and "Brave New Girls." She gives a quick and thorough step-by-step guide on techniques at the outset which includes how to attach a crimp tube, open and close a jump ring, turn a loop in a head pin, how to use a wire guardian, and make a wrapped loop. These instructions are followed by numerous, whimsical projects, none of which will tax the novice beader.

The 1st edition of Impatient Beader is one of my favorite book in beading. The 2nd edition is even better! Margot Potter is absolutely creative in combining materials and creating outstanding projects. With her, beads are not only apply as jewellry and accesories. More than that, you can use beads in creating t'shirts, pins and other crafty projects. However I find the 2nd edition is more to advance level. For beginners, before you jump impatiently to this book, I suggest you to start with the 1st book.

Bio-engineering builds intricate structures based on nature's properties, using 'wet' self-assembly techniques of nature - and this new science is explored rarely for general audiences, making THE GECKO'S FOOT: BIO-INSPIRATION-ENGINEERING NEW MATERIALS FROM NATURE a winning discussion. From the origins of Velcro in the notorious spiny cocklebur to how self-cleaning leaves fostered self-cleaning surface inventions, THE GECKO'S FOOT draws direct links between bioresearch and consumer interests.

Be aware that this was originally published in Britain, and few, if any, of the "Britishisms" are Americanised (or is that Americanized?). An example is the British "tip": this should have been changed to "garbage dump" for the American edition.
Interesting topic.

This book is about bio-inspiration for human technology. It is a very interesting subject, but I had some problems with the execution. For example, the chapters seemed to jump arounds a bit, I didn't get a sense of "flow" from chapter to chapter. There were also some factual errors, the most noticable to me being that "helicopters don't fly in the grand canyon". Since I have done so on a tour, I know this statement to be false. Additionally, the author doesn't go very deeply into the science behind the topics he covers. I suppose he may have just been trying to keep it simple, but anyone buying this book is probably a science nerd, and a little more technical information would be welcome.
Fairly unique topic, Well-told

In one of the few books ("Pulse" is another good choice) that focus on bio-inspired processes and products, Forbes explains some interesting applications inspired by lotus, desert beetles, spider silk, and a whole bunch of other examples from Nature. Each chapter focuses on one specific product or theme and hence is fairly independent of the other chapters and can be essentially read in any specific order. The discussion does sometimes may get too technical for a non-science background reader, especially some of the diagrams. However, the discussion in itself is very clear and the reader obtains a good sense of appreciation of the products being envisaged from a particular "inspiration". Excellent information. A must read.

This book offers lessons to be learned - many more than the promised nine - to anyone traveling a path to spiritual well being. Whether those lessons are truly "life altering" will depend on the reader's path and how long they've traveled, but even the most road weary will find something of use in this unassuming primer.
The nine lessons touted in the title are simple concepts, attributable to many major religions, but most recently aggregated under the umbrella of the "new age" movement. In the book's introduction, Everything Old is "New Age" Again, author Kala Ambrose tells readers it's not her intention to teach them anything new but to remind them what's been taught for years and what they already know on a soul level. The lesson's that follow - universal magic, thought creation and manifestation, oneness, the soul beyond the self, existing in the now, and absence of evil - aren't groundbreaking, but instead deliver a certain type of clarity that's usually attained by being deftly reminded of something you already knew.
Those exploring what's commonly referred to as new age thought - which Ambrose calls esoteric teachings and points out are actually very old - for the first time will find "Nine Life Altering Lessons" an easy, accessible entry into alternative belief. The simplicity of the structure, the language and the teachings themselves are easy to read and understand. Those already familiar with the basic concepts might find this a useful book to help remind them of truths that are easily forgotten in modern society. Either group can glean insight from Ambrose's words, either by reading the book end-to-end or in random bursts.
The guide, however, isn't without its drawbacks, one of which is Ambrose's constant reminders that, as a newcomer to this school of thought or a "Neophyte," as she calls it, the reader cannot possibly hope to obtain the full benefit of the teachings. Those reminders, coupled with equally plentiful caveats that the full-strength versions of the lessons can't be committed to paper, might leave the readers - especially those doubtful at the outset -- feeling as if excuses are being made should they fail to actualize the teachings in their own life.
Not that Ambrose is wrong to note that salvation - despite the overblown life-altering promise of the title - cannot be found in a book. Always, she makes it clear that she's written the guide as an entry into spiritual exploration and not complete encapsulation of what needs to be known. So even when that cautionary language verges on condescension, those searching for meaning could do worse than to pick up "Nine Life Altering Lessons." If nothing else, they will alter their outlook on ideology.

I was familiar with Kala as a very talented interviewer and teacher, and I have long been aware of mystery schools--though not seen it recently spoken of in popular reading. Still, when I picked up "9 Life Altering Secrets" I was rather surprised by the volume of information introduced/reintroduced in this small book.
For the neophyte, the path is aptly opened; for anyone 'long on the road', the new perspectives or reminders are equally beneficial. Kala's book is so packed with information that one must 'sit with' that it took me quite some time to savor.
One of Kala's insights that I most enjoyed, was the perspective that we are surrounded by the energies that we put forth in our thinking. If we cultivate this surrounding field with negativity, that is what we breath in--perpetuating our negative experience of the world.
"9 Life Altering Secrets" has many more gifts to offer.
I am thankful to Kala for bringing these schools of spiritual introspection back to the forefront...and for sharing from her own learning and insight.

9 Life Lessons by Kala Ambrose
This book explains about esoteric teachings and clarifies that the teachings are available to everyone, but especially those with an open mind and heart. There are many "pearls of wisdom" as the author mentioned, throughout the book that enlighten the reader and help to reveal the mysteries of the universe. I was very curious to find out what mystery schools were and also learned that I was a Neophyte, or a student who has just become aware that they may be more than what they previously considered themselves to be. The book is a pleasure to read, with beautiful language and a deep sense of calm and peace. A favorite quote of mine: "Some call me a teacher. I like to say I do not teach, rather I help souls remember who they are."

This book is an introduction to the willing student who is truly open-minded and interested in learning to connect to the magical energies that surrounds us. Kala Ambrose explains, in nine easy steps, this spiritually rewarding process:
From Lesson 1, where she explains that we are here to learn and grow, and that which we haven't learned we repeat until we have fully experienced the lesson; To Lesson 9, in which she sums up her teachings by allowing the student to become aware that "all is revealed in the journey, not in the destination."
Her tender thoughts and words of wisdom go beyond the traditions of reaching the mind and extend to the deeper subconscious where the soul rests.

Where do I start? How about, from the bottom of my heart thank you Kala! I finished this book a while ago now and it has had, and continues to have, deep and profound implications for me. I was going to write this when the positive changes started to peter out or stop but they just keep on coming. What did I learn? In short, I discovered self-love. And it is truly transformational. Without love you feel like a hungry ghost, I've been searching (and discovering) for such a long time without any, or very little, permanent change. I would discover something, that good feeling would be fleeting, or I would know the information I'm learning is truly wise, however, like a ghost it would just pass through me. Love has the most potent seed of, dare I say it, life-altering power imaginable, and it is this book that gave me the breakthrough I really needed. To those who can relate to these words I can't recommend this book enough.

This is the perfect "starter set" for Stuie's works. It consists of three of his prior "thin" books (Miracles, Life Was Never Meant To Be a Struggle, Silent Power). Very good/inexpensive set to get a feel for Stuart and his style. Highly recommended. From here you might consider reading "Weight Loss for the Mind", then "Infinite Self". But wherever your path leads, the key is to follow it.
Great bundle of books all in one.

You will certainly enjoy these really great books and you will also be glad you got them.. .. I got some great new insights, and along with that there is allot of good common sense stuff, but It's great to see commonsense affirmed and also reading and focusing on positive messages while we are bombarded with nativity all around us that lower our energy.. It's refreshing to get a good dose of this stuff...
