I love to hear Mr. Chopras talks, but his books, at least the ones I've tried to read, are not so interesting. He tends to go off on tangents and the result is confusion. He has a couple of novels out as well. Please, don't bother with these, especially if you're accustomed to great fiction. But I shouldn't talk, off on a tangent of my own. So back to this book. I didn't become affluent, did you?

Deepak Chopra in Creating Affluence writes about life and how you get what you want. Not only hard work and focus but by applying all the spiritual principles; letting go, surrender, faith, positive thinking, meditation and prayer. Creating Affluence is a guide literally from A to Z. And "Z" stand for the Zest of life. Staying upbeat and "facing life with abandon." The best part of this book is the daily reminder that we must stay strong and positive, give back to other people, and use our talents in the best possible way.

I am in the middle of a cross-over from being a former spy and infantry officer--metrics driven--to partnering with 23 others to create the Earth Intelligence Network and empower the public with public intelligence that forces the policymakers into accountability. So I find myself in strange territory--I used to blow off all the spiritual "squishy" stuff, and now I am finding that it provides not only a bridge, but a safety network as I venture into a "leap of faith" on what might be possible.

I found the same authors DVD The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success and book by the same title, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Pocketbook Guide to Fulfilling Your Dreams (One Hour of Wisdom) to be so worthwhile that I watched and then read them in combination.

This is a gem of a book, the kind of thing that the author himself says should be read once, and then used as a daily reminder, reading several pages each day. I agree.

Most fascinating for me, as a specialist in information and intelligence, is the authors emphasis on pursuing the goddess of knowledge so as to make the goddess of wealth envious (hence attracting wealth), and also his emphasis on how the raw material of the world is non-material, everything is a hierarchy of states of information and energy, a seamless matrix of nothingness. What I used to write off as gobblygook now has meaning to me.

The author's emphasis on Failure as good finally resonates with me. I have just closed the door on fifteen years of trying to help governments get in touch with the 96% of the information they do not and cannot steal, and as I reflect back on all that leads to the founding of the Earth Intelligence Network, I see a string of failures that led to this day:

Refused an offer from Lloyd's Bank Internation to join US Marine Corps
Average infantry officer, accepted by CIA because of background
Resigned from CIA when I found the clandestine service corrupt
Resigned from the Civil Service as founder of USMC Intelligence Center when the lawyers refused to let me run another conference on Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)
Abandoned effort to help US Government specificially in achieving access to the 96%v via a Multinational Decision Support Center, when too many factors precluded engagement.

Now I am here, about to begin my true life's work as intellligence officer to the five billion poor (and to those corporations that wish to follow the green to gold path, as well as those foundations that wish to use a global impact plan to armonize their spending for poverty, disease, environmental degradation and so on).

"Failing" at infantry, spying, bureaucracy was all a prelude to my life's work--I cannot yet say it is destiny, but my published books are now starting to show a pattern, and the next three (all free online as well as offered via Amazon, now, finally, "make sense:" Collective Intelligence: Creating a Prosperous World at Peace; Peace Intelligence: Assuring a Good Life for All; and Commercial Intelligence: From Moral Green to Golden Peace.

This book, which has two sections, one offering a page (sometimes more) on 26 steps, followed by one on 25 quantities of a unified field, is real and it is not at all squishy. I'd like to see more hard-nosed CEOs and others give this book a chance.

This book is simple and could be read in a very short amount of time... that is if you choose to finish it. I did not finish it. I just could not get into it. I loved The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of Your Dreams and would recommend it to everyone. This book just fell short in my eyes.

I took a copy of this during an overseas military deployment, and in being reminded of the incredible conditions of the Endurance expedition, I found it hard to complain about some of the comparatively minor discomforts of being in the Army. This account by Worsley, the skipper of the Endurance and a lifelong friend of Shackleton, is a useful complement to other writings on the subject. The details of the Antarctic conditions, and particularly the section on the famous open-boat crossing to South Georgia Island, are described in way that no one but a participant could tell the tale. Worsley includes material about his WWI era experiences that doesn't appear in other works about the Endurance expedition. This is a recommended book for not just the Antarctic subject matter, but for its treatment of bravery, resourcefulness, survival, adventure, and leadership. This is a book that I will keep and re-read.

I wanted to know something new, beyond the shackleton's book - south, but sometimes I think Worlsley had a great imagination.

Should Be Mandatory Reading on Leadership

Amongst all the books on Shackleton's voyage, this one provides the best insight into Shackleton as a man and as a leader. Due to his sense of humility and perhaps focus on the task at hand, Shackleton's own account of the voyage tends to dwell on the daily details of the group's struggles. Worsley's account on the other hand provides great insight into group dynamics and Shackleton's skill at maintaining unity under trying conditions. Shackleton's story needed someone other than Shackleton himself to tell it, Worsley being the expeditions captain and Shackleton's right-hand man, not to mention a masterful writer, is just the person. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone studying leadership and team building.

I have read every book about Shackleton's epic voyage to Antarctica, and this book is by far the best. It is written by the captain, so it is first hand info, written from his personal diary. The details are magnificent; you are there, alternately shivering or tasting the caribou fur in your mouth. This book makes Lansing's book look like toast; and Lansing's book is good!

A Leading Promoter of Inspirational Leadership Inspires and Instructs
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-13
Author Mac Anderson is the founder of Successories, Inc., billed as "the leader in designing and marketing products for motivation and recognition." The author here combines the compelling photographs and quotations for which Successories is well known with wisdom from both his extensive business experience and his reading of other leadership gurus.

A good leader, the author says, should "walk the talk; keep it simple and keep it real; celebrate successes; know that courage matters; keep hope alive; take responsibility; develop a 'service attitude'; aim for the heart; and make a difference when wherever" possible.

"If you throw your heart over the fence, the rest will follow," the author says illustrating the virtue of Heartpower. "Don't be afraid to go out on a limb," the author says illustrating the virtue of Risk. "That's where the fruit is." "Integrity does not blow in the wind or change with the tide," the author says in promiting Integrity. "It is the inner image of our true selves."

Other virtues the author promotes are LEADERSHIP ("By the work, one knows the workman," Jean de la Fontaine said), ATTITUDE ("Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference),DISCOVERY ("Leaders are like eagles," said Henry David Thoreau. "They don't flock, you find them one at a time"), GOALS ("Dream big dreams but never forget that realistic short-term goals are the keys to your success"), KINDNESS ("The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched," Helen Keller said. "They must be felt in the heart"), OPTIMISM ("Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement," Helen Keller said), VISION ("...The music makers...the dreamers of dreams...are the movers and shakers of the world forever it seems," said Arthur O'Shaughnessy), RECHARGE ("My attitude, my energy, my levels of motivation are directly tied to exercise"), PERSEVERANCE ("Go over, go under, go around, or go through, but never give up"), VALUES ("Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least," said Goethe),CULTIVATE ("Pull the weeds. Otherwise the team, just like the garden, cannot grow," said John Murphy), TRUST ("Trust, not technology, is the issue of the decade," said Tom Peters, EXCELLENCE ("Excellence is not an act...It's a habit," said Artistotle), SERVICE ("Service is the lifeblood of any organization. Everything flows from it, and is nourished by it. Customer service is not a department...it's an attitude"), LEADERSHIP ("A leader's job is to look into the future and see the organization, not as it is, but as it should be"), QUALITY ("In the race for quality, there is no finish line,"),FOCUS ("Focus on the critical few, not the insignificant many"), FEELINGS ("You may not remember what someone says or does, but you'll never forget about how they made you feel,"), SUCCESS ("Try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value," Albert Einstein said), INTEGRITY ("Wisdom is knowing the right path to take. Integrity is taking it"), PASSION ("To love what you do and feel that it matters...How could anything be more fun," said Katherine Graham), and PURPOSE ("Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven," said Matthew in the New Testament).

Ideals the author pushes include "aim for the heart;" "develop a service attitude," "think change"; "strive for authenticity;" "take action;" "hre great people;" "expect the unexpected;" "take the inch by inch approach;" "walk a mile in their shoes;" "embrace humor, hope, and optimism;" "reward the gift of imagination;" "manage your energy;" "develop a 'refuse to lose' attitude;" "reinforce core values;" "pull the weeds (among employees);" "create an attitude of ownership;" "make good habits;" "learn from Southwest Airlines (about making customers have fun and feel respected)"; "your customers must come in second (to your employees);" "make your brand stand for something;" "focus on your priorities;" "understand the soft stuff;" "lead with values;" "lead with integrity;" "love what you do;" "make a difference."

The author has written a book to be read quickly, and a book to be reread time and again. The author has written a book to keep, and a book to give away. The author has boiled leadership down to its essence, and created a basis for future thought and research.

It seems there are an unlimited number of books on leadership, and none are either omniscent or indispensable. The author has written a good book to read at the start of leadership responsibilities, and a good book to read when one is enmeshed in leadership responsiblities. The author has made a contribution both to leadership itself, and to aiding in the communication of what leaders do from veteran leaders to newer leaders.

Woodrow Wilson famously said that the more time he had to prepare a speech, the shorter he could make it. With many years in the business of leadership instruction, the author has written a short but comprehensive outline of what leadership is all about in a manner that provokes sustained thought and provides inspiration.

This book deserves a wide audience in business, government, volunteer organization, and non-profits. Wherever leadership is needed and there is doubt as to what leadership entails, this is a book to begin the discussions and help start developing the solutions.

It is an easy read and the exercises are easy to follow. I had Laura Day's Practical Intuition (audiobook) so I am familiar with some of the concepts that she described in the book. While the teachings in the book are not entirely new concepts, they have been put together so as to be more effective because they are tied together. I am currently putting it into practice and so far, it seems to be working for me.

Must have! A guide to help manifest your innermost dreams and desires.

This book is a must have no matter what profession, period of life, stage of relationship you are in or not in. I have personally read all of Laura Day's Books and this book is the perfect book to start with.
I have also trained with her in practical intuition... and other skills and can tell you first hand that you do have the power to manifest anything you want into your life. I have many stories full of validations of her techniques.
We are blessed that Laura Day has chosen to spell out in such specific and simple detail the fact that we all have the ability to improve that which we have allowed ourselves to lose over the years as we become adults... and that is trusting our own intuitive abilities. In the Circle, she shows you just how strong the power of a single wish can be. Just how strong a manifestor you already are if you just had the proper tools to call those desires/wishes forth. Laura Day teaches these tools to you. There is no limit to what you can accomplish in your life or the extent of the happiness and love you can give and receive. You are already welcome in the circle.
I have given this book as gifts to, too many people to list here today and the changes in their lives have been amazing.

Our Passions
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-06
The author focuses on a series of universal philosophical
concepts to assist us in defining and implementing things which we value most. The process is set forth in a dozen or so steps. i.e.

o Embodiment forces us to visualize what we want.
o Awareness involves living our dream in the real world.
o Sacred status means praying for something or contemplating it.
o Synchronicity means identifying matter in relation to other things.
o Effectiveness means recording coincidences and obstacles.
o Space relates to the object in relationship to the Universe.
o Transformation relates to the energy fields surrounding the wish.
o Coherence refers to the embodiment of something.
o Right action deals with conflict resolution.
o Mastery refers to a singular goal for directing all energies.
o Intuition refers to the experiential domain.
o Healing refers to betterment and not energy channeling.
o Connectivity involves getting others to complement our energy.

Overall, the book is a good first start on running the full circle
to define our passions. For some, the book may be too theoretical
to comprehend in day-to-day application. The acquisition is worthy
for contemplative readers willing to thing carefully about the
contents. This book is not for the 60 second manager.

Since 1922, Reader's Digest has offered its readers uplifting stories and wise insights, spiced with gentle humor. In this anthology, David K. Hatch has collected some of the best of these stories and quotations, with added commentary from inspirational writer Stephen R. Covey. Their book provides numerous examples of ordinary people living principled lives. Without fanfare, quietly and nobly, these unrecognized heroes make the world a better place. They demonstrate what conviction, charity and goodness really mean. Although many of the anecdotes are saccharine and superficial, getAbstract believes that even the most exhausted workers and jaded managers will discover words of inspiration in this book.

Be forewarned: EVERYDAY GREATNESS: INSPIRATION
FOR A MEANINGFUL LIFE by Steven R. Covey; compiled by Donald K. Hatch is not a "typical" Covey book along the lines of his classic THE SEVEN HABITSOF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE.

Rather, it is a collection of short pieces that originally appeared
in READER'S DIGEST that Covey effectively brings together
with running commentary. . . the "Reflections" section after
each chapter made me do just that; i.e., think about what
life is all about . . . I found the overall effect to be quite powerful.

I also liked the "Further Insights" that provided quotes on the
topic being discussed . . . among the ones that caused me to
pause were these:

* What do we live for if not to make the world less
difficult for each other?---George Eliot;

* It is more noble to give yourself completely to one
individual than to labor diligently for the salvation
of the masses.--Dag Hammarskjold; and

* Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human
face.--Victor Hugo.

EVERYDAY GREATNESS is the type book that
you'll often want to revisit . . . it would make a great
gift for just about anybody . . . furthermore, it can also
be a source for short read-aloud stories that can
be appreciated by all ages--such as this one [from
John Louis Feliciello]:

* As a boy I often tackled a task full of enthusiasm, only to become
discouraged quickly. One bright summer day my father showed me
an experiment with a magnifying glass and a newspaper. When he
moved the glass over the paper from one place to another, nothing
happened. But when he held it motionless in one spot for a while,
focusing the sun's rays, a hole appeared.

I was fascinated, but didn't grasp the significance of the procedure.
Father explained that the same principle applied in everything we do:
That to make a success of our lives we must learn to concentrate all
our efforts on the undertaking in hand until it is finished.

Everyday Greatness: Inspiration for a Meaningful Life by Stephen R. Covey and David K. Hatch is one of those books meant to be read in small doses so that the concepts can sink in. You may not find all the sections as applicable as others, but no one is together enough to not benefit from *some* part of it...

Contents:
Searching for Meaning: Contribution; Charity; Attention
Taking Charge: Responsibility; Courage; Discipline
Starting Within: Integrity; Humility; Gratitude
Creating the Dream: Vision; Innovation; Quality
Teaming with Others: Respect; Empathy; Unity
Overcoming Adversity: Adaptability; Magnanimity; Perseverance
Blending the Pieces: Balance; Simplicity; Renewal
Afterword; Acknowledgments; Notes

Even though the book has Covey's name on it, the material isn't written by him. The bulk of the material consists of compiled stories and quotes from existing sources and historical figures. Covey adds commentary to each section and chapter in order to tie them all together into a cohesive theme. Each chapter has around three stories that illustrate the particular trait being covered. There is then a Wrap Up and Reflections section that summarizes the stories and theme, as well as questions to ask yourself in order to more deeply examine how that trait would manifest in your life. Finally, the chapter concludes with a number of quotes that stick with the theme but show slightly different facets of it. All in all, there's a lot of inspiration to be had here...

For as good as this book is, I didn't find myself putting it at the top of my priority list to read. I've had it checked out from the library for quite awhile, but there always seemed to be another book that I'd pick up over this one, rather than come back to Everyday Greatness. I'm still not quite sure why I felt that way, but it is what it is. Regardless, I did find a number of valuable insights, and if I owned the book I'd likely revisit it a number of times.

Really about the Awakened Mind Pattern
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-03
This book refers extensively to the awakened mind pattern developed by Max Cade, and he was Anna's mentor.

The AMP is based on Cade's research on EEG patterns of yogis, swamis, and healers and the discovery of common patterns for people engaged in creating, problem solving, learning, healing, memorizing and meditating.

People in that state of consciousness are using a specific combination of beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta brainwaves. If you spent decades modeling the EEG patterns of yogis, swamis, and healers, you might find common patterns for people engaged in creating, problem solving, learning, healing, memorizing and meditating.

If you were to use entrainment to create sound pulses and music to recreate those exact same EEG patterns in normal individuals, a feeling of lucid awareness, you would create something wonderful.

Dr Jeffrey Thompson has done this. For the price of an ordinary CD you can get the pioneering benefit of all this amazing technology.

According to the sleeve notes with the CD there are fifteen different layers of brainwave entrainment sounds used to create the awakened mind pattern.

This CD is very mentally stimulating, creating all sorts of mental imagery and very relaxing.

This type of CD also uses subaudible binaural beats in the soundtrack. How this works is that if a frequency of say 100 Hz goes in your left ear, and 105 Hz goes in your right ear, then both sides of your brain reconcile this by creating a third 5 Hz brainwave, which would be in the Theta range associated with creativity and a trance state. This also creates new neural pathways in the brain enabling you to access this desired state more easily in the future, and also induces synchronicity between both sides of your brain. With fifteen different levels of entrainment on this CD, you can imagine how beneficial this could be.

So, I recommend you get the CD first. In one session you can immediately reattune to the awakened mind pattern. With practice you can reach this state automatically.

Then if you find that helpful, go ahead and buy this book which has many insights on this interesting subject, and some interesting meditation techniques to use with the pattern.

Don't be put off by the title...

I'm not sure why Anna Wise gave this book its rather inappropriate title but it is very misleading. The books sounds like some sort of low-grade improvement guide meant for high-power executives searching for ways to increase their ability to outwit dumb consumers and investors; nothing could be further from the truth.

There was a lot of interest in biofeedback in the 1960's and then interest turned to more "scientific" endeavors such as genetics; we're only just beginning to realize our folly. Luckily a few researchers continued what was begun and their hard work and determination can now be seen to have a lot of value.

Wise owes a lot of her background to her mentor, Max Cade, and some rather personal problems she outlines in the book. She combines experience and theory from Eastern meditation with EEG biofeedback work, something Pelletier and others have alluded to for a while. However, Wise really puts a lot of valuable tips and information together and that is the beauty of this book.

The book outlines some basic information about brainwaves and then gets into a great overview of some typical patterns and their apparent link to various personal states. Of course there is no purely theoretical link between what EEG measures and what is happening in your head but there can be no doubt that there is a connection. And this book details some of the important connections.

There is an excellent overview of meditative "states" and their subjective "landmarks". Wise offers some great insight for people who are starting on the path to meditation and are getting stuck at certain points. This material has been available through other sources, notably from the Zen tradition, but these days it can be difficult to make sense of the multitude of books and so-called "masters". Wise's suggestions are straight-forward, simple and clear which is great.

There are guided meditations, again taken from EEG studies, that allow anyone to make his/her own tapes. The visualization exercises have been used successfully in beta-theta biofeedback studies and anyone who has participated in Qigong or Zen will recognize many common elements. But the best part of this book is the clarity and the way information is presented in a manner better suited to those of us from the scientific framework.

That's the funny thing, the information has been available for thousands of years but science is only just beginning to acknowledge it. In the book's final pages Wise details her own struggles with healing blindness and Kundalini rising; something that most Western readers would scoff at without the preceeding pages "explaining" the link to something we can relate to.

Definitely worth buying and, more importantly, using.

Awaken Your Mind

This is a book about biofeedback, but from a different perspective. Just about every other book ever published on biofeedback has a clinical, reductionist medical approach (except for Elmer Green''s books, Beyond Biofeedback and Ozawkie Book of The Dead.) Anna Wise, a regular trainer at Esalen, takes a more holistic approach based on her 25+ years of experience observing the brain wave patterns of people with awakened mind-- yogis, top executives, artists, etc.

Rather than talking about treating illness, she talks about optimizing brain function and mental states, about enhancing the contents and quality of consciousness.

She discusses how she uses the Mind Mirror, a technology originally developed by her Mentor Max Cade and engineer Geoff Blundell, to assess how our brains are operating and then, she devises strategies to get our brains working more like a person with an awakened mind.

She offers exercises and a strategies which help you learn to put your brain in better places.

If you want to see the whole picture of the biofeedback world, Anna is definitely not a part of the medical pathology mainstream and that's the way she likes it.

When she is a speaker at the EEG biofeedback conference I run, she speaks a different language, which addresses spirit and the whole person. There have been some academic researchers who were really turned off by her, at first. But after discussing her approach, in detail and not just reacting to her "soft" approach to brain technology, many have turned around, and found common ground with her.

Jim Robbins book, Symphony in the brain, is a good history of the more recent developments in higher frequency brain biofeedback, mostly focused on treatment. Evan's and Abarbanel's Quantitative EEG and EEG Biofeedback is a strictly professional text, with about 15 contributed chapters. Anna Wise's contribution to the writing on brain biofeedback provides a very nice feminine ying to the masculine yang that has predominated in the field.

Valuable Exploration of Consciousness & Brainwave Patterns

Anna Wise has produced a groundbreaking book on the topic of brainwaves and consciousness. This book examines the relationship between brainwave patterns (frequencies and amplitudes) and states of consciousness and activity. The author discusses neurofeedback techniques and various meditative exercises that can be used to develop desired brainwave patterns. Wise focuses on developing patterns she calls the "high performance mind," which include a mix of the 4 major brain wave frequency ranges. Developing the combined brainwave patterns also helps improve brain hemisphere synchronization. Wise briefly covers topics that relate more directly to metaphysics, such as kundalini, and she seems to be unclear about the full nature of the relationship between brain electrical activity and consciousness, as the brain is merely a tool for consciousness to use in interacting with physical sensory reality. Wise acknowledges that during OBEs brainwave patterns can be weak and non-informative, which shows how consciousness can be very active and dynamic without being filtered through a brain. Thus, there can never be a perfect correlation between brainwaves and consciousness, even though brainwaves usually reflect focii of consciousness and can be entrained for development of consciousness and self-regulation. If that is your interest, then this is an excellent book to gain ideas and insight from.

Complete & utter rubbish

Bearing in mind Anna Wise supposedly has many years of experience researching eeg feedback she writes a complete load of rubbish. I have never seen so many inaccuracies when it comes to talking about brainwaves and eeg. Technical inaccuracies I mean, almost as though she doesn't know what she's talking about. I run a neurofeedback centre and have a doctorate in his area and it saddens me that so much nonsense is written about brainwaves.
For a start we talk about delta, theta and so on as though they are real things when in fact they are just arbitrary ways of describing the content of the eeg waveform. Using Fourier analysis we break down the complex eeg brainwave into sinusoidal waves of certain frequencies and these frequencies we call delta, theta etc. It is therefore completely untrue to say that the brainwave 'is' theta or 'is' beta or whatever. Every brainwave can be broken down into proportionate amounts of each group, so what we should be talking about is the relative amplitude of the groups.
Now, there are numerous howlers in this book and she goes so far to say that normal waking eeg 'is' mainly beta and some people may have delta. The fact is that in any normal waking brainwave there is probably 5 times more delta amplitude than beta, so where the notion of waking eeg 'being' beta is complete nonesense and simplifies the eeg enormously. She also never even mentions gamma rhythms which are looking increasingly interesting.
Another howler says delta is associated with the unconscious. Pardon ? Show me the evidence ? Does that mean that in normal waking consciousness which is composed of 5 times the amount of delta than any other rhythm, we are actually unconscious ?
It's about time a sensible book is written about neurofeedback and brain rhythms. They are indeed important and our understanding of what is going on in the brain electric will lead to new ways of our controlling behaviour but please don't buy this book and think you are going to get anything other a load of tosh when it comes to eeg technicalities.
P.S. This goes for all Ms Wise's books relating to brainwaves or eeg or neurofeedback.

Highly recommended for anyone suffering from anxiety, depression, addiction, and/or alcoholism. Especially good for anyone lost in their heads and alienated from their bodies including experienced meditators. Good for bringing joy and mystery back into life and glimpsing God/Love from within. At least from what I've experienced so far with Meditating with the Body.

Wonderful intros and lots of meditations too.

I love the format of this program! It is excerpted from a longer, 9 CD set, Buddhist Tantra, which offers numerous lecture topics.

In Meditating with the Body, the lecture is contained on 1 CD, and it provides a comprehensive intro to meditation, along with guidelines for gaining awareness, and exploring discomfort. Then, the remaining 3 CDs include 6 guided meditations (which each have their own intros). For me, this was a real fit - small amount of lecture and numerous profound meditation practices to choose from.

This is a great introduction to Reggie Ray's bodywork techniques. I attended the first "Meditating with the Body" program taught by Reggie and I can say these practices changed my meditation and my life. I highly recommend this CD set as a place to start. If it peaks your interest you should consider attending one of Dr. Ray's retreats. Check out www.dharmaocean.org

Er, folks, there's something you should know about the author - he was exposed as a phoney combat vet in the book "Stolen Valor." Brinkley claimed to be a Marine sniper in Vietnam when he had his first "near death experience." His military records (obtained by the authors of "Stolen Valor" through the F.O.I.A.) show he drove a truck in California during his service - the guy never got anywhere near Vietnam.

If you want to take spiritual advice from a liar, hey, be my guest.

The impression I get from this book is that Brinkley is trying to cash in on the popularity of Betty Eadie's wonderful book, "Embraced by the Light." But I don't believe this guy. What lost me was his claim that the angels told him to open a chain of health spas. Uh huh.

A strange book about near-death experiences

The author of this book got struck by a lightning (in 1975) through a phone line and barely survived. He visited afterlife and he was given a life review there. It wasn't pleasant because he had been a self-centered and mean person. He had loved fighting and served in the army too, in Vietnam. In the afterlife he got to relive the pain he had caused to others. But, anyway, he came back to continue living as a totally changed man.

The first two chapters of this book I would recommend to any military professional. But as a whole this was slightly strange a book. Odd visions of future, psychic abilities... And the author's mission in life became to piece together some strange device. -And the story continues in another book...

If this book doesn't change your paradigm on life and death, you are hopelessly entrenched in a stagnant, antiquated belief system. If Dannion was accepted by the light, with his life on earth, the rest of us have nothing to worry about. His life, death, recovery and transformation makes this book hard to put down.

The one line in the book I always come back to, is when Dannion is out of his body, looking down as the EMTs are loading his lifeless physical body into the ambulance, and he is thinking, "Gee, I thought I was better looking than that!" Nice touch Dannion.

This is the book that got me started in believing that there is truly another side here. Dannion's account of his near death experience is both real, riveting, profound, insightful, descriptive, believable and astounding, all at once. This is a can't put it down read and I've recommended it countless times.

Interviews with 104 terminally ill patients result in great gifts of insight from about twenty of these people. There are some "stars" in this tome, named Gary, Kenneth, Shirley, Harriet, William S., Lucille and Christine. These few really let their light shine in reference to their faith in the one true God and Jesus Christ and love for others.

The primary insight is that these people are past any hope for a longer life and, in preparing for death, lay aside the former "important" things like money, success and material things and try to gather in the things that really do matter: a life without regrets, forgiveness, and showing kindness to others. The thing that resonated with me was the joy of reconciliation with others, especially family, and letting go of grudges and cherishing the good things that can come out of bad experiences. Sadly, there were a few people who seemed bitter and full of regret in their dying.

Unfortunately, like typical "churched" Americans, the vast majority of the dying looked forward to heaven, but showed no clear evidence of a real relationship with the God of heaven and His Son. Calvin K.'s sad testimony was "I was the Captain of my own spirituality", but, he professed no hope beyond this world despite being a minister. Many voiced the belief that they had not done anything "that bad" and didn't feel that God would hold it against them. These were countered by the few who seemed very sure of where they were headed. Most people just "hoped" they'd go to heaven and were pretty content they'd lived a good life.

Overall, the book was inspiring and motivated me to seek the good in each day, and to be kind to everyone I can be.
A kind word or even a smile to a stranger may make an eternity of difference for them.

My biggest disappointment was the fact that so many are still ignorant of the truth of the Gospel of Christ and I blame that mostly on the watered down preaching that so many put stock in rather than reading the Bible for themselves. What you "think" is the truth may not be. We will all die someday and we need to figure out where we're headed before we get there.

In a world which seems to be largely driven by avarice and strife, this book is a refreshing opportunity to examine what is transcendently important for the human experience.

The truth is; none of us get out of here alive. This superbly crafted book offers some unforced, non-didactic advice for how to really live while you have the chance.

Life is a Gift is a collection of thoughts from over 100 diverse terminal patients who were on the verge of death. If the reader will carefully examine the testimonies of these people, there is much to be learned about life...and how to get the most out of it. Read this book. You will be glad you did.

Bob and Judy Fisher interviewed 104 patients of Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN. They were a diverse group with one thing in common, "Each accepted looming death as an unavoidable fact." They each shared wisdom. The discussions range from forgiveness, family, gratitude, and appreciation for the small blessings in life.
Life Is A Gift, the title of this book says it all. Life is a gift but we do not always take time to appreciate it until it is too late. Bob and Judy Fisher write with great sensitivity and wisdom. Life Is A Gift is a book for the living; perhaps it will help us to value this gift for God.
