This book is a great introduction to living a peaceful life with a quiet mind. After reading this book my interest in achieving what Chopra discusses became very strong and since then I've continued down a more spirtual path. The concepts here are super simple, yet made complicated by the extreme power of the noisy mind.

Power of now is the life changing book for many, nothing more than repeating same thing for many other. It all depends on our mental acceptance to understanding something new thought and experianceing who really we are.
This book make more sense, if you practice meditation or life circumstances force you to so low that, you give up fighting your fear, thoughts or pain body suddenly.
You can break past patterns of your life, you can see life more appreciting than what we thought, we realize we are sprititual beings experiancing human being.
If you like reading this, I also recommend "New Earth" from same author.
Some steps I felt I need to follow to be with being or now.
1) Know who are not.
2) Know your pain body (or all painful thoughts of past or future)
3) Know the difference between inner voice and you. Identify, how it's controlling you so far.
4) Know how inner voice or pain body thought keep trying to entertain you, the moment you accept it. How it vanish in thin air, when put attention or focus on it.
5) Continue practice Now by focusing on your body sensations or circumstances, instead of going with inner thought.
6) Understanding that, focus on now comes with out much thought now.
7) This is begnning of end of compulsive thinking of pain body. Attaining oneness with being, peace, stillness, joy of being.
8) Continue your practice power of now, after some time, you no longer needs to practice. You become being and live in now. N'joy the life form of you.

I thoroughly recommend this book...it explains why we humans act the way we do and it gives easy to read ideas to change old stuck patterns in order to bring total harmony and peace to your world and relationships. It explains what is happening in the world and why we are experiencing the things we are. Acceptance is the key, let go and heal your life. I am priviledged to have read this book....it is part of life's lessons.

That said, this book is really entertaining! She does a fabulous job in Italy, but Indonesia is by far the best, most moving part. A little disappointed in Bali because i wanted it to culminate with something more meaningful than her getting laid finally. Nevertheless, lovely book and charming writer. I'd love to travel with her sometime and can't wait to see how they do the movie! Enjoy!!!

This book was wonderful! As for the negative reviews it received, I think these were written by the people who didn't quite grasp the premise of the book. I felt like I was vacationing with the author, she was so descriptive with her tales of traveling to the foreign countries she wrote about. In Italy, she let you experience the food and drink through her narrative and in India, you got to experience the spiritual awakening she unravelled and then in Indonesia, (my favorite)she taught you about the politics on the country and the people and culture that she encountered. It was like being a fly on the wall in all her journeys. I definately recommend this book. It is a very spiritual, therefore "deep" book but if you are up to it, then go for it...you will only better yourself for reading it!

I wish I could have traveled the world for an entire year and pigged out on pasta to get over my divorce. Instead, I was forced to drink too much and eat a lot of chocolate and tell anyone who would listen what an a-hole my ex was.
I enjoyed reading about the food in Italy, but that was about it. I was kind of disappointed, after all the good hype about the book.

This book is good. Maybe I don't even understand how good it is. The way Taleb is writing gets to your ego; he feels so cocky. But, yes, man has a point. I started to laugh to myself and to my capabilities of "estimating" and even "thinking" while reading this book. Taleb has interesting view point to life; don't try to predict it, or forecast it, life will fool you anyway, sucker! Don't believe in your most valued economic forecasters, they don't know much, unfortunate... for them. Expose your self to "black swans", positive ones hopefully, try to make negative black swans to be gray swans for you, if it is grey one you have prepared yourself well for future. These swans are rare events in life, which take place even we would not like them to happen. Even one event can make a difference, and most likely a shocking difference.

Taleb's main point--that the world is far more random and unpredictable than almost anyone grasps--is well worth making. This, as he shows, is especially clear and crucial in human-dominated activities such as economics, politics and the social sciences.
I was particularly struck by a graph that appears three-quarters of the way through the book that shows that the ten largest one-day changes in the U.S. stock market account for half of the returns. This is a mind-blowing demonstration that anyone, including the Nobel-prize-winning economists Taleb reviles--who estimates risk under the assumption that the stock market follows the Gaussian bell-shaped curve is on extremely shaky ground.
Taleb's more general position, that in most human activities, "black swans"--events like 9/11 that are intrinsically unpredictable--make the most difference, is also an invaluable eye-opener.
After many pages of argument, I'm even willing to agree that whether we like it or not, we do live in chaotic, risky and unpredictable "Extemistan" rather than relatively tranquil "Mediocristan."
Unfortunately, the more I came to appreciate what Taleb has to say, the less I liked how he says it. He comes across as an angry, aggressive, in-your-face intellectual snob. I was tired of his tirades and gratuitous insults by page 7. They continue through to the last line of the book, where he, a "person of commerce" takes a last swipe at other persons of commerce.
Still, if you can get past his abrasive style, you can benefit, and maybe even profit from his sometimes brilliant insights.

As far as I got, it all seemed to make sense. The bell-curve IS inadequate. Ok, that's fine. And there are some great examples. There are plenty of reviews here that will give you all the goodies.
But all in all I have to say that there was a lot of clutter. If you're going to buy this book READ THE PREFACE, everything just clicks better.
Still many things seem irrelevant, or perhaps the connection was not explained enough. Lots of repetition. My overall sense is that it could have been shorter and to the point.
Needless to say, I liked as far as I got. I just felt that I had enough information and that reading the rest would just be repeating the beginning. Still, I'm happy I bought it and got as far as I did. The insight is good, and useful. So if the subject interests you, give it a try and hopefully you'll make it ot the end.

I have found Mr. Taleb's book to be a very interesting and thought provoking read. As an experienced emergency management professional and instructor, I find it calls into question the whole process of risk and hazard analysis. While the book is certainly intellectually stimulating and should cause one to be very careful with planning assumptions, I question its value in any direct application. While looking in the rear view mirror we don't know how many Black Swan's were prevented by well conducted risk and hazard analyses based on historical occurrences. As Mr. Taleb points out, history has overlooked the successful interventions and un-occurred disasters.

A very interesting concept and I believe, a very true phenomena that exists in every walk of life. As a corporate human resources director, black swans can bring disastrous results if proper planning is not in place. While most of my career has been mundane to say the least, the periods where I experienced `Extremistan' were the times when great change happened either in my career or within the organization I was employed by.
Teaching your managers and leaders about the concept of black swans will result in positive benefits for your organization that are invaluable. In fact, grasping the black swan theory may even save the organization from ultimate failure.
This may not be viewed by many as a management book. These people would be wrong. Combined with Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking and Freakonomics [Revised and Expanded]: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything a leader in the management world will be fortified with the tools needed to survive the trips to Extremistan. Michael L. Gooch, SPHR Author of Wingtips with Spurs

A new approach to dealing with depression that offers hope for those who have had little success with other therapies. What is new is the idea of combining techniques that are known to work rather than relying on single approaches. Learning to live in the moment removes many of the triggers that lead to depression. The best book I have read on this topic. I bought 5 copies. I have given away all of them to people who have expressed interest in the book. All of these people have had positive reactions to the book.

This book is very good, anyone who has suffered depression should read it. The program, if you choose to follow the program that the book outlines, is demanding, but perfectly doable - - requiring 45 minutes per day. I think it's worth it - - have just started doing the 45 minutes of meditations myself, and hope it will help.

This is simply one of the best self help books to be produced in a decade. And it's useful for nearly any form of psychological issue that you may be struggling with. What makes this book a gem is the CD which will guide you through various meditation and relaxation exercises. As a neuroscience researcher exploring the effects of meditation on the brain (see Newberg and Waldman's forthcoming book, How God Changes Your Brain: Breakthrough Findings from a Leading Neuroscientist, I am convinced that this is one of the best ways there is to substantially reduce depression, anxiety, and stress in anyone. Even if you don't read the book, listen to the CD. It will definitely change your brain, and your life.

I'd like to express my deep thanks to the author for this compassionate, insightful and very practical book.
I am using this book in conjunction with congnitive therapy for to recover from a 3+ year bout of depression and have found it very helpful. I cannot say it will be as insightful for everyone who reads it but for me I found it provided a very accurate description of what I was experiencing and has given me some very practical advice on how to climb out from a very painful mental state. I'd suggest that you use this book in connection with some actual therapy but can see how it would be useful as a stand-alone self help book if you're properly motivated.

This little book is lovely as a gift for someone, especially yourself. It contains excerpts from Jon Kabat-Zinn's masterpiece "Coming to Our Senses", a tome about mindfulness and meditation. In this video I open the book, show you the layout and read two different quotes. I've kept the video to about two minutes in length. This is a book that anyone interested in living more serenely and more alive can enjoy, whether or not you've had the pleasure of reading the main book that it was excerpted from. Highly recommended!

I keep this wonderful little book at my bedside and wouldn't think of traveling without it. The subjects (chapters) indicated in the table of contents make it easy to find concise help for issues that may cause anxiety and/or frustration in one's daily life. It's a real treasure!

I have just read 'The Power of Now', and had actually read 'Stillness Speaks' before that. I would recommend buying 'The Power of Now' first if mindfulness is fairly new to you. The Power of Now provides more of a foundation for the mind, before going beyond mind and into presence. 'Stillness Speaks', on the other hand, is condensed snippets that are like immediate portals into stillness and sanity for those who have some familiarity with mindfulness/meditation already, as I did. That said, I found 'Stillness Speaks' an immediate and refreshing facilitator of stillness/presence/being for me....and it continues to be this each time I pick it up. A homecoming to 'sanity'. It cuts through mental noisiness, reminds me of my depths and that life is here and now.
In 'Power of Now' Tolle suggests we listen with more than the mind, almost like listening with the body when we read. I instantly recognised in this description my primary mode of reading spiritual texts, and you may too; and I find Tolle's writing very nourishing when read in this subtle way. If my mind is too dominant and I'm in resistance to the moment, however, his writing appears to lack depth or interest, and the way appears barred to me! This suggests to me that his writing does indeed come from a place of being, and not from an egoic, mental level. While I'll read others for more mind-food, I'll continue to dip into Tolle for soul-food and instant peace.

At first glance "Stillness Speaks" may seem like less of a "real book" than "The Power of Now" or "A New Earth". It is smaller in size, shorter and does not have the same kind of continuity in the sense of going on an inward journey. Yet that is exactly what appeals to me about it. This is the kind of book I can place on my nightstand, open to any page, read a few ideas to ponder and put away for the night (or day).
For someone who is struggling to integrate the concepts in Tolle's other books, this one may not have much appeal. For for those who have done the inner work, who have been on the journey for a while, this book offers succulent reminders of ways to continually bring ourselves back to appreciating every moment and manifestation of life. For example, after writing the last sentence I randomly opened the book to page 72 and read, "Sometimes surrender means giving up trying to understand and becoming comfortable with not knowing." This is such a simple idea, profound and yet a tremendous challenge for most seekers.
This is not a book to read from cover to cover. It is a book to ponder a bit at a time. The ideas presented are so rich with meaning that trying to absorb it by simply reading would render the mind dull and bloated. It is a meditation tool, a garden of ideas, any one of which has the potential to expand consciousness.

Iyengar himself has disavowed this book long ago...even so, it's the single greatest reference book out there.
The first thing that will blow you away is the treatise on hatha yoga. The ease with which he describes the philosophy of yoga foreshadows his complete book on the subject. It's quite a foreshadowing!
The bulk of the book is an exhaustive detailed pictorial and written description of most practical poses (and several impractical ones).
However, I fell in love with his close to 300-week practice schedule in the back of the book. I must say that it's implausible that someone can follow it exactly and include all the poses all the time (even he says to skip the ones you can't master), it's a very keen insight into what HIS practice might have been like back when this book was published, before he started a huge yoga school.
Now he has curriculum that changes every year (to keep teacher coming back to $$$chool - smart man!). The current Iyengar school details exact angles in which to keep your body in specific poses. I love 'Light on Yoga' because it lacks that exactness, and allows you to feel the energy of poses, rather than getting stuck in anatomy of the poses.
A must read, and must re-read, and a must re-re-re-re-re-.........

Reading this book really did help me change my thoughts, and thereby my life. When my wife tells me "You are different" I guess it means that it really does work. Oh, and the changes have been in a positive direction. I look at life in a completely different way, and I am truly enjoying life today. I have also purchased many more Wayne Dyer books since reading this, and they are all wonderful!

You know, I'll admit it's fun to read, (I enjoy thought provoking anything) but at the same time you kinda wanna tear the cover off so that nobody catches you reading Wayne Dyer. Books on enlightenment are almost as socially incriminating as self-help... but we love it, don't we?
(As though some fellow wearing a grass hat 2500 years ago had some secret knowledge or insight that you need.)
However, and by contrast, to recognize that, what were pearls of wisdom for people on the other side of the planet, centuries ago, are still gems of thought for those of us here today, is certainly evidence of something. Even if it's only evidence of, "Oh, I guess that existential hole in my understanding is common to all people, throughout time!"
Anyway, Dr. Dyer is an accomplished and respected writer, and he delivers a good look at this material, and it's enjoyable to read, and ponder, and you know... one day you'll recognize that you'll always feel as you do, but that's OK, because everyone else feels that way too.
If you're at all interested in or curious about the Tao, this is an excellent book. I'm glad I bought it.

I am about half way through this book - it was a little bit of a culture shock to get into this way of thinking and acting, but I am enjoying the challenge and think that it has already got me thinking about how I deal with stress and everday events - I have been dealing with some serious medical issues, and need to reduce my stress - I believe this will help - the psychologist who recommended it to me thought very highly of it and was convinced I would benefit from it - I think I will....

I bought this book in the middle of a year-long battle with insomnia--not the typical life-changing trauma that brings many others to this book, but insomnia destroyed me both physically and emotionally. My doctor suggested anti-depressants, and a friend suggested Full Catastrophe Living.
I never touched the anti-depressants.
Jon Kabat-Zinn is the voice of calm all throughout this book, never imposing his method on you but simply making suggestions that he's seen work in his practice, both personal and professional. The first section offers mindfulness activities that you can immediately put to practice: meditation to help separate your self from your thoughts; a body scan to simultaneously connect you to and release you from every section of your body; and yoga to strengthen your muscles and flexibility, both physical and mental.
The second section shows how those methods have been proven to work, through both scientific research and anecdotal evidence. It is a section for those still reluctant to give themselves over to what they may perceive to be the "new age" or "weird" practices in the first section. If you've been practicing as suggested in the first section, the second section will verify to your head what you feel moving in your heart and body.
The third section offers a variety of lifestyle and anecdotal advice for specific ailments and disease, from insomnia to headaches to cancer. Through all this, Kabat-Zinn is at once compassionate and scientific, speaking to and reassuring all shades of his audience.
Together, these sections taught me to listen to and have faith in myself. The book showed me that mindfulness is not some new-fangled craziness but a path to peace and self-knowledge. Eventually, my sleeplessness went away, but that was more a side-effect of the practice, a natural reaction to the peace I learned from myself through this book.
