The Secret is intriguing and gives anyone with need of money, hope or health, a lot of hope. It is hard to believe, however, that one can get whatever one wants just by thinking about it or asking for it.

The main thing is that a group of people devised a well packaged scheme with a well known "secret" to make people believe they will get rich to get rich, themselves. The question is whether one should be a party to this kind of activity, and every buyer is. The claims at their site are utterly outrageous - Plato and Beethoven got where they were after finding the "Secret" - and should be really shut down by an outpouring of qualifiers. They should not be rewarded but rather shamed.

Not especially new information but certainly interesting...

While this information wasn't especially new, it was a great reminder. I run decluttering and time management workshops for a living for Inspired Honey (inspiredhoney.com) and so I like to have a break once in a while give my mind a tune-up (like my car). While this information is certainly not new. See the book You Can Heal Your Life written decades before or even lots of ideas from proverbs in The Bible), it is still interesting information. If it gets people analysing their thoughts more and being more in control of their choices - I'm all for it!

There's only one secret to this book . . .

I saw this book last night and picked it up. I had seen it in stores on the best seller racks, and it had a catchy cover. At first I thought it was some kind of story until I opened it up. After I read the first page I realized it wasn't, but being bored I read on. The first chapter is quite interesting. But as I kept reading the book, I honestly felt like I was reading the same page over and over and over again. This has to be the most redundant book I have ever read. The only thing I have gotten from this book, is to sell the idea that hard work and dedication never got anyone anywhere. Telling people that their bad spending and eating habbits aren't cause for them being broke or overweight. I simply finished the book because it was quite funny. This book takes the idea of staying positive with everything in your life, having hope and a motivation to reach your goals, and makes a total mockery of great scientist and inventors. Everything great that has been done was created by trial and error, not because some mysterious "universal mind" or genie wanted them to have it. If you purchased this book, the only real secret is that you have wasted twenty-five dollars.

I read this book at just the right time - I was in the crucial "needing to test my product on real people" (but not really wanting to) phase, and this book made me buckle down and focus on how important it was to talk with, poll, and listen to your potential customers. i.e. being "tuned in."

The process outlined in the book is somewhat simple, and is likely stuff we've all heard before, but it's presented in a way that makes you realize exactly how important it is to really tune into your customer base - whether you have a company, are a musician, pastor, leader, or just want to market yourself better!

Get Tuned In or You will be turned out

Interruption marketing (most mass media advertising) is becoming more expensive and reaching fewer people that care. And if you compound the problem by creating a product that you are trying to sell rather than creating one that is "Tuned In" to your market, you have compounded the problem.

When creating a product or service, most businesses make these common mistakes: They assume that the company insiders know more than the buyers about what the buyers want/need. They based their market research on their current customer base - thus eliminating a much larger potnetial market share of potential customers. And they try to create a need - the tell their customers what to buy rather than providing what the customers want.

To be successful in today's highly competitve marketplace, you need a breakthrough product that resonates with your customers so that they immediately understand the benefit to them and are eager to buy the product. This only happens if you are totally Tuned In to the customer's wants/needs.

"The Tuned In company constantly listens to, observes and understands the problems the buyers are willing to pay money to solve." for the most part, Tuned In companies ignore the competition - listening instead to the customers.

Too many companies get caught up in their own egos. They think they know what the customer wants. Most innovation-driven companies listen only to themselves - they obsess about who will get credit for the next innovation or the most unique invention. And all too often the newest innovation does not solve a problem for the customer, so they simply do not care.

If you are going to be successful, your product or service must resonate with your target market. And resonators are in the market - not in your head. A product or service that resonates with the market will sell itself. You do not need to push the product. Customers will seek out your product or service.

One of the most powerful (but probably difficult concepts to come to grips with) statements is "Your opinion, although interesting, is irrelevant." The only thing that matters is the buyer's opinion.

There are six steps to becoming a Tuned In company.

Step one - Find unresolved problems.

Step two - Understand the buyer persona. Who is the buyer, what are their problems, what moves them to take action.

Step three - Quantify the impact. You must determine that the problem you are solving is urgent, pervasive and the buyer is willing to spend money to solve the problem.

Step four - Create a breakthrough experience - the most successful companies understand that the customer buys a total experience - one that resonates.

Step five - Articulate a powerful idea. Your message must focus on the problem it is solving and must be immediately understood by the buyer.

Step six - Establish authentic Connections - you must understand and focus on the buyer. The buyer must feel like you really understand and care about them and their problems.

It is no longer possible to push product by using mass advertising. Buyers are more concerned about their problems and getting them solved. They no longer wait for a solution to come to them. They are actively looking for solutions to their problems. If you are going to be successful, you must understand their problems and be Tuned In to the buyer.

The book is well written and give plenty of examples of Tuned In companies such as: Zipcar, iPod, National Community Church and the new Dutch Boy paint containers.

It is very important to understand that to be successful today that you must take a different approach than has worked in the past. Buyers have many more choices. Markets are fragmented. And interruption marketing no longer has the impact it once did. You cannot focus on your product. You must focus on the problems your product solves for the buyer.

It is easy to believe that being Tuned In does not apply to your business. It is also very easy to fail. This is a very important concept and a very easy to understand gateway to what it takes to market successfully in a world that changed the way buyers respond.

You don't have to get Tuned In, but if you don't the chances are very high you will be tuned out by your cusomters.

Excellent introduction/summary for Pragmatic Marketing Principles

I've been through the seminars on Practical Product Management delivered through the authors' firm (Pragmatic Marketing). As a CTO it was an eye-opener to see an approach to Product Management that meshed with the concepts of Agile Development in the software field. The two disciplines work well together to create software products that resonate with customers.

This book is not so much breaking new ground, but distilling years of learning into a simple introductory form for folks who might be interested in moving from an inside-out/command-and-control view of the market. It makes a strong empirical business case for doing things differently.

Highly recommended if you're starting a business, launching a new business unit or product line, or simple want to spark growth in existing efforts. You might even learn which existing efforts are not tuned-in and pull back on their funding so you can invest in products and services that the market wants.

3 stars for the content, 5 stars for the examples; 3.5 stars altogether

Remove the examples from the book, and you have for the most part a collection of already known high level concepts without much depth. Granted, marketing does not have to be complicated and it should not be, but creating innovative products requires more than concepts. For example, the first step in the authors' Tuned-in "process" is "Find unresolved problems". OK, good point, but I knew that and you probably did know that too! How do I do it? The authors's advice: "ask the customers"! But I knew that too. Tell me more. "Ask your non-customers". Wow,I would never have thought of that. Tell me more. "Go to trade shows" say the authors. I knew that too. Tell me more. "Ask open questions", "Keep an open mind", etc. say the authors. At the end of this chapter and of most chapters, I fell frustrated of not learning approaches or tips I have not heard about before and of not learning more how to do it.

At the end of Chapter 4, I was going to drop the book, but the examples kept me going. There are at least 50 examples of Tuned-in companies from Disneyland to the Maganavox remote control that locates itself to the ubiquitous iPod. These examples are interesting by themselves. They are spread through the book to illustrate each step and to validate the entire tuned-in "process".

I keep putting process in between quotes because what the authors present is not really a process. It is more a framework. In addition, it seems that not one of the examples was actually the result of applying the authors' framework under their guidance. So the whole edifice is an after-the-fact analysis of successful innovations that serves to justify the author's framework. I would have liked to see at least one example of a product that the authors actually helped develop.

The book itself is an example of the framework the authors propose, and in particular of "Step 5: Articulate Powerful Ideas". This chapter develops the idea of establishing "memorable concepts that speak to the problems the customers have". The authors here eat their own dog food, and it is clear that they spent time thinking about how they should name that book and what memorable concepts they should articulate it in. "Tuned-in" is a sgood and simple concept that is repeated over and over throughout the book so that it sticks in your mind. There is an other one that is used over and over; it is "resonators" to designate successful products that resonate with customers.

In summary, the value of this book is probably in this Chapter 5. At least it is for me. We typically underestimate that the least number of words a concept can be described in, the more powerful it is. "Tuned in" is a useful concept to keep in mind to designate that idea that we need to be "tuned in" to the market and the customer. But you will need many other books and workshops to know how to do it. But, that's what the authors' core business is: delivering seminars! No doubt that they will have demand.

This book spells out in incredible detail the processes of the mind and how it effects the results of our current life as we know it. I must commend them on the thorough explanation, though felt it could be summarised in a chapter. If it was purely about the mind then so be it, however I did struggle to get through this part, a little brainy so to speak. From there the wisdom John and Murray inpart on the virtues of setting up a successful business, along with amazing scenarios to demonstrate how to do it, is priceless. Clearly one of the most powerful business building books I have ever read. Jason McDonald www.hwwaustralia.com.au

A WAKE UP CALL FOR AMERICAN CITIZENS

Review Date: 2008-07-22
Using real life examples, Don Corace reveals how ordinary Americans are being terrorized, robbed, and in some cases even forced into bankruptcy by government officials and judges who have lost all respect for the ideals of freedom envisioned by America's Founding Fathers.

Corace provides an easy-to-read overview of the legal cases and political influences which have fostered the dramatic erosion of property rights in America - which continues today at a rapid pace.

Government Pirates should be required reading for every citizen and elected official in America.

I strongly encourage anyone who believes in the American ideal of freedom and the American Dream of property ownership to purchase and read the shocking property rights abuse cases profiled in Don Corace's new book.

Anyone who reads Government Pirates will be jolted into a new level of awareness of the dramatic increase in regulatory power held by local, state and federal government agencies.

The type of abuse of power profiled in Government Pirates isn't supposed to happen in America, but it is happening every day to land owners across the country.

As Don Corace points out, if Americans do not wake up and begin taking action to reverse these disturbing regulatory trends, we will find ourselves waking up at a point in American history where land owners no longer possess the legal standing or economic ability to fight back when government elites decide that seizing or restricting the use of privately-owned property will benefit "the common good" or win the favor of a special interest group.

As the leader of one of the nation's largest state-level property rights organizations, it is my hope that after reading Government Pirates, freedom-loving citizens across the nation will be inspired to seize this opportunity in time to unite in a collective effort to restore sanity to American government regulation.

Why do you need this power in the first place? Here is a quote from 7 Habits, "Standing near the graves of famous people, we understand all the silly wars in which they fought."

I will not be surprised if this book is used as a required reading in terrorist camps to show the "real Americans". Clearly, it is against democracy, Christianity, and all other values.

Read 7 Habits by Covey instead.

Many people have found books like these, essentially "how to manipulate people," to be useful in achieving certain goals. However, in my experiences, people that succeed through these techniques almost always seem to grow a void within themselves. One might be able to convince others to the point of submission, but are they really happy? Books like these do not offer advice on life balance and personal relationships. Do people really like you? What do others really think of you and your ideas?

Another point to think about, to take from Stephen Covey: How many on their deathbeds wished they'd spent more time at the office? Even Maslow at the end of his life put the happiness and fulfillment and contributions of his posterity (self-transcendence) at the top of his famous "hierarchy." What kind of overall life balance will manipulation techniques bring you?

Take into consideration another alternative: Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This book gives ideas on how to look at the world and yourself, and gives basis for a lifelong challenge in personal change. Practicing these habits can give you the "manipulation" you want through building genuine relationships all while being able to sleep at night knowing that you have real friends, self worth, and above all, a positive life balance.

Ten years ago I was introduced to Abraham and their teachings in great detail. So, I went into reading this book with a lot of familiarity with the teachings that it describes. Still, I wanted something that would give me a quick refresher and would give me tools to get myself on a more positive train of thought. This book does that. You literally can read it in one day...though I think I took two. Then I sat down and did the written exercises and I felt a whole lot better...like a new person. Unfortunately, the challenge I am dealing with is one that takes time to resolve. I wish the book offered more tools for re-energizing the work that I did initially. I do keep reading my Desire Statement over and over. But just doing that doesn't have the same magic as when you first work through the exercises. Still and all, I think this is a terrific book! Really easy to read and to the point.

It's funny how easy it is to overlook the basics, even if you've studied the Law of Attraction and related principles of manifestation for years. This Law of Attraction book reminded me to review those fundamentals to make sure I've mastered tje,.

And Michael J. Losier's book is above all practical, which is my kind of book. He offers a minimum of background and theory.

To be nitpicky, I think there's not quite enough there. He references the early 20th century Law of Attraction works, but he curiously does not mention that the concepts of vibration are thousands of years old, dating back to ancient Egypt and Greece.

But what's great about the book is the step by step process he offers to make the Law of Attraction really work. For example, his suggestions for altering words and affirmations so that they ring true and create positive feelings is very insightful.

The book also includes worksheets to help sort out desires and to allow them to manifest. I'm still working through the "allowing statement," which are supposed to eliminate doubt. And I find that section a bit vague.

What I like most about Losier is that he's been working with the Law of Attraction for many many years -- long before "The Secret" hit the shelves behind its huge marketing engine (clue: Oprah).

Micheal's the real deal and that comes across in his writing. I'm always wary of the slick and polished works on subjects like these that really aim to sell much more expensive backend products. This book doesn't do that. It's a real "how to" book and I appreciate that.

Hey, who would have given the Rolling Stones credit for singing about the Law of Attraction!

I am a big believer that Spiritual books have to have practical application or they are worthless. The Law of Attraction has been around in different forms longer than the author acknowledges in his "Brief History of the Law of Attraction", but in any form it is good to know.

The good news is the author makes it easy to understand and simple to apply to everyday life. He makes it clear that you need to change your perspective to change your vibration. The bad news is that if you think you're going to be able to win the lottery or get every materialistic item on your "desire" list, you are sorely mistaken.

To find out why it won't work in those situations, you need to dig deeper, because there is more to this than what's in the book. For those that want to move forward in their Spiritual advancement, that is the next step

If you are a practitioner seeking insightful wisdom from a Supreme Court Justice to improve your advocacy skills, this book is not for you. Those who have taken a basic legal writing and/or moot court course will not find any new information here. Essentially, the authors have compiled highlights from a legal writing textbook, added a few quotes from famous judges and a few examples from their own experience, and billed this as a book of wisdom. It appears that most of the book was written by co-author Bryan Garner, drawing on the material from his past publications on the same subject, with Justice Scalia merely placing his name on the cover in order to sell more copies. This is evident by comparing the writing styles of the co-authors when they disagree at a few points in the book. Garner's entries read like the rest of the book; Justice Scalia's entries read like one of his court opinions. Overall, if you are a practitioner, you likely already have a legal writing book stashed away in a box from law school that will serve you just as well.

Legal education does not end with the finishing of your law degree.
The challange begins when you prepare your first brief and stand before the Judge to argue your first case. If you are not prepared well and are not confident to appear before the Judge your mind may become blank. The Skill of Advocacy is acquired slowly as time goes by and you become confident day by day. A good command over the language of the Court is a must. Absolutely essential are also the General Principals of Argumentation as lucidly described by the Hon'ble Antonin Scalia & Mr. Garner in their wonderful book on advocacy popularly known as "The Art of Persuading Judges".

Sometimes it's easy to lose sight of common sense, and many of the things Mr. Garner and Justice Scalia point out as being helpful and persuasive are common sense. The book is organized nicely into small bits that make it an easy read. I'd recommend this to any attorney, or even to anyone who simply wants to be more persuasive in writing or speaking.

Nothing like reading thoughts from the country's greatest legal mind of this century...Antonin Scalia is amazing.

As a plaintiff's lawyer who also does appeal work, this book was very interesting but little is memorable after a few days. I'm glad I signed it out from the library instead of buying it. It's just a repete of basic (naive) advocacy principles. The image is that your judge will really conscientiuosly read things and be careful to rule properly. The book is very well-edited--so you won't read much of substance that is realistic or cynical--like about judicial intellectual dishonesty. Scalia gives no insight on how to get an honest opinion from an appellate court--how to keep appeals judges from ignoring things in the record (or making up things) just so they can come up with a very good-appearing opinion that is wrong because it has result-oriented oddities that only the parties' lawyers know about. Summary judgment (and more recently dismissal for failure to state a claim) have become procedural easy-outs that have created widespread dishonesty by judges who want to get rid of cases (usually because they are infatuated with defense counsel). Often defense counsel succeeds only because they loudly and assertively repeat their propaganda--and judges (or their staff) go right along (letting perception become reality). Also, de novo judicial review is in reality deferential to the trial judge (with unwillingness to reverse--finding any way possible (dishonest) to affirm).

There were some very good points--like not being lured into making concessions during oral argument. There might be one detail that prevents the judges from (honestly) ruling a certain way--so you could get a question that so temptingly and nicely tries to get you to agree with an innocuous point, etc. There is a great example of how the judges will write about such a concession in their opinion. Another good point is Scalia's belief that whatever doesn't help your case hurts it (i.e., don't fill your briefs, etc. with unhelpful things).

There could have been some mention of realities like that most judges and staff never in their lives had to prosecute a civil case (or never have had a burden of proof in their lives) or never had to deal with defense counsel in a contentious manner (e.g., trying to get discovery through a motion to compel)--and how to work with that in the justice system (those judges and staff).

I also didn't like Justice Scalia's pompous "dissents" on some points by Bryan Garner. They stand out in hindsight as ugly parts. It appears that Bryan Garner did the heavy lifting in writing the book.

I read this book, the original, I studied it in 1970, and it changed my life! I learned to know what I want in life and take charge of it while being a caring person for all around me. It is also about getting along with people. I did not use it for financial goals but rather for personal-achieving goals; and it worked! It's very detailed and structured so it helped me step through the process for the rest of my life. It is not vague at all.Think and Grow Rich: The Landmark Bestseller--Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century

The book title tells that it is about making money getting rich. that's true it covers a lot of topics on making money. But it reveals far more than how to get rich. That's why it becomes a great classic.

This book teaches practical ways to success in all aspects of life. Through this book you can find many timeless wisdom and useful tips on how to train your mind toward success. Beyond making money, detailed tips can be found on how to start business, get a job, succeed in career, gain leadership skills, improve relationships, manage people/assets, stay healthy, etc.

It is one of a few books worth reading over and over. I also got the MP3 audio book to play on my half-hour commute.

This review is is relation to the condition of the actual book.
Very poor quality copy of the book. The pages are all unequal and jaggered. It is practically falling apart at the seams.

I'm usually concerned about purchasing items on line, especially books. I can honestly say that this experience was worth it. I would recommend this seller to anyone interested in purchasing good quality books at extremely reasonable prices.

This book is an absolute must for law students or anyone engaging in the process of legal research and writing. I am first year law student and this book is my go-to for any question I have about the research process. This book was recommended for my course, but not required. So many law students only buy the required books. Some feel the supplemental material is just a waste of money. Don't make that mistake with this book, you can use it throughout your career.

Terrible textbook

I'm a paralegal student at a California State University and we used this textbook for our legal research class. This book provided virtually *no* actual information as to *how* to conduct legal research. It provided knowledge of the theory of research, and had an acceptable explanation of primary/secondary and mandatory/persuasive authority, but that's about it.

The only reason why I came out of that class with any understanding of legal research was going to the local law library and having the librarians help me through it (and they were incredibly patient, helpful, and understanding).

If you are in a class that uses this textbook, God help you. You will benefit far more by speaking to other students who might know about research, or just going into a law library and asking for help there.

I've used this book for the past few months and have been pleasantly surprised by how well it is organized, and how easy it is to understand. The author writes in a clear, straightforward manner and covers all of the pertinant topics.
